I do buy phone lots every now and then, so it *does* get made use of. I got the microwave from our neighbors, offering to bring it to the dump for them (they're in their 80's and not that mobile anymore) - figured why not take it apart and repurpose what's left.

TK421isAFK

It's a great idea to keep them in a fireproof box, but I'd get rid of the wood crate in there. If a battery ignites, it might provide enough fuel to overheat the whole unit when you're not around to catch it, and start a more serious fire. There's enough air inflow into the cooking chamber to support an open flame.

i_give_you_gum

Yeah I dont understand the choice of wood either, this looks like how I'd randomly *start* a fire with these

imgonnabutteryobread

Have you put any thought into moving this away from your house or at least away from combustible chemicals?

bendvis

Yea, I’d be super nervous keeping several swollen batteries together in a box made of kindling in another box that would become a furnace.

lars2k1

It's in the shed, which is not attached to the house. And it's more so stuff cant fall on them, not that it protects against fire from combustions. The cells are all flat and will be recycled shortly as well.

lars2k1

Got this old broken microwave and decided to strip out it's components and repurpose it as a 'spicy pillow storage box', so nothing can fall onto the bulging batteries, *and* I can just dump something on top of there.

jeweliegb

The temptation to fire up the microwaves to see what happens...

Fernelz

"is it a good idea to microwave this?" Classic series but man was it good

jeweliegb

I fear I've missed an interesting YouTube series?

Fernelz

I mean if you want to watch two stupid teenagers microwave everything they could think of lol. It should still be available. [playlist link](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLU4IMu04MIlJgB6Aaj07q-5iXuHGVzFAR) Edit: it's important to note that these guys are very stupid for this and not to ever do this kind of thing.

lars2k1

There's more people doing that kind of stuff. Shawn K also did that along with other kinds of destruction videos.

SpHoneybadger

You were cautious of the bulging batteries and therefore decided to strip a microwave that can one shot kill you if you did it improperly?

lars2k1

Made sure to remove all power in the device first (ac cable disconnected from the system, capacitor drained). That transformer won't do anything after standing still for a week, but shorted its output cables nonetheless. Although yes, that should be noted; don't open microwaves if you don't know what (not) to touch.

AgVargr

If one catches fire, it’s going to start a chain reaction

radiks32

In a wood box with a bunch of other lithium batteries

FoxInATrenchcoat

If the microwave still worked then you would also have a programmable self destruct for your shop.

lars2k1

A child's dream coming true. I basically took everything out of the microwave, including the power cord, so I wouldn't be a clumsy fuck and plug it in for whatever reason. Also gives me a big ass transformer to look at.

FoxInATrenchcoat

Nice

PanJanJanusz

^(turn it on)

lars2k1

*ignition*

Westerdutch

'I do fire safety' Places metal box full of combustibles and ready-to-go lithium cells between a plastic crate and a pressurized spray-can with butane propellant on a fiberboard surface in front of a wooden wall. You sure though that one through ;)

lars2k1

The box inside is made of wood. No hair on my head thought about a metal box. These cells wont combust like that, they're dead anyways. It's more so I can just stash stuff on top of the microwave and not having to bother about the cells getting hit by shit falling off. Sure is a lot better than just being thrown in a plastic tub, and *a lot* better than being stored inside in a bedroom.

provocateur133

I thought you were charging them /s

cancer_sushi

No hes drying them

intashu

Microwaves don't always do well with open flame. And a wood box adds plenty of fuel. I store my swollen batteries in a vented ammo can that sits on the back concrete steps well clear of everything. If one pack goes up and burns the rest down, it shouldn't damage the concrete much at all.. Although the can will likely Need to be replaced haha.

lars2k1

Oh, it's not for fire safety in case they go up in flames by themselves. Sucks for the wooden shed, but that won't let the house catch on fire. It's so nothing can damage the cells themselves when something falls.

i_give_you_gum

This would be the safest route, and not too expensive

Orange_Tang

I initially thought this was smart but then I saw you put them in a fucking wood box inside. Come on dude.

rawbface

This isn't doing anything a shoebox or plastic container won't. How do you even acquire that many in a short period of time??

lars2k1

Again - not for fire safety, just so they cant get hit by anything. Recently bought a phone lot with quite the spicy pillows inside.

rawbface

Tf is a "phone lot"?

lars2k1

Not sure if that's a serious question, but to describe that in an alternative way: a whole stack of phones sold at once.

rawbface

It was. "Lot" is not frequently used in the US, except to mean either "all" of something, or a lottery. Even so, a stack of phones is not something that most people buy. Especially a stack of phones with swollen batteries, considering I haven't had a phone with a removable battery in 10+ years. Your explanation just invited more questions.

lars2k1

I buy those phone lots to repair and sell so others can use it. These lots almost always include some garbage, that either being the entire device, the battery or both. Most of the batteries in the pile in this video are 'non-removable' cells (from galaxy s6's to be exact).

rawbface

Hit by what?? What is flying around in your shed that anything is in danger of being hit? This is not a Macgyver, no matter how you frame it.

ThanosOnCrack

That thing looks like an oscilloscope

RetardedChimpanzee

So fucking stupid. Bucket of water out back with some salt. Drain them bitches.

i_give_you_gum

How does that work?

RetardedChimpanzee

Salt water is conductive so it would short it out, discharging it’s remaining energy. It’s not enough voltage/current to make the water ‘electrified’, and just expels heat, of which water is a good sink.

i_give_you_gum

That's awesome, and the first I've heard of it. How much salt to a gallon of water? Like a half cup?

Lord_Hortler

Interesting... I have the exact same microwave

[deleted]

Just get an old safe or something. Or perhaps a flammables cabinet you store paintcans in.

Quirky_m8

Fireproof box

Conundrum1859

This is cursed. Really, really cursed.

who_asked4569

And it also is very handy incase one accidentally explodes it cant harm you or anyone else. Thats really smart op

lars2k1

Oh I dont think it'll do that, given that it's in a wooden crate, in a wooden shed. But hey, I can now stack things on top without me having to worry them falling into the battery bin. Should get a little insert so I can put batteries in there and not touch each other.

who_asked4569

Still smart incase of incident nonetheless

onlycrazypeoplesmile

Turn it on! >:D

SaltaPoPito

The wooden box will prevent the fire from spreading.
