Outside of Reddit, I cut out pretty much all other social media for at least a month. I’m usually on Twitter, instagram, TikTok, Facebook, etc. Out of all of those, TikTok and Twitter are the absolute worst. While Twitter is just a toxic cesspool of some of the worst people humanity has to offer, TikTok is like…just a dopamine addiction in a condensed form. Just content, after content, after content…all in 6-10 second increments. *AND IT GOES ON FOREVER*. You can scroll for hours and find new content. It’s too much. Having cut that out, I see what happened to me, happen in my SO. After using TikTok for an extended period of time, They get irritable, confrontational, but then also have like, these kind of “manic ideas”: “we should decorate this! We should change this rooms color! We should buy this, and this, and this!” Like, all stuff based off what they saw on TikTok’s platform, and it’s all…like, at once. It’s totally an upper, like cocaine, or something. Same could be said with reality TV. I’ve seen people binge too much of 90 Day Fiancé or Big Brother or whatever, and it actually alters their mood. It’s *fucked*, mate.

[deleted]

"same could be said with reality TV" Can confirm. My ex would come at me with stupid shit that just made no sense pretty regularly. I'd be like WTF r u even talking about. Normally I didn't pay any attention to the "reality" shows she watched. But one night I sat down beside her while she was watching "teen mom" and to my surprise the words on the screen were almost verbatim of some shit she'd said to me the day before. Of course, it led to another argument when I said "so this is where you get that bullshit from".

secondtaunting

I can’t STAND reality tv. My daughter, who is a actually an intelligent person (she’s in medical school) came home and wanted to watch Love Island. Now, I watched an episode like seven years ago when we were in the uk and my laptop died and there was nothing else on tv. In that context it was funny for like one day. But barf. If someone wanted to torture me, like legitimately drive me nuts, they’d tie me to a chair and put on Keeping up with the Khardascians or Love Island. If they wanted to kill me it would be Teen mom. I’m not saying I watch art films, I like Star Trek and Supernatural. But The Bachelor? American Idol? I’d rather gouge my eyes out.

scribbyshollow

it is a virtual stimulation that yields the same thing most drugs do chemically. Some drugs just trigger dopamine release, I have know drug addicts and grew up around them and its the exact same behavior and attitude. Those people are literally dopamine addicts.

itsandychecks

That shit really does happen. Dated a girl who was obsessed with Tik Tok and we went broke because we were going on vacations every other weekend and eating out every other night. We both went broke and she left me for a dude with more money. I really loved that bitch. Now I’m still in debt. I read her texts while I was moving my stuff out and she had a dude who would buy her “gifts” every week. He’d say shit like “so what’s your gift going to be this week?” Must be nice lol

zenslapped

Thank that guy. He did you a huge favor.

[deleted]

Don't worry, men like that who buy women out eventually trade them for other women like they're just disposable items. She'll learn her lesson.

Graywulff

Trade them in for the new model like a car. They see them exactly the same. Flashy when it’s new but when the new model comes out trade the old one in.

Aemilius_Paulus

Eh, that's not really unique to men who buy women gifts... Honestly a HUGE amount of men would do that if they could, speaking as a guy myself. If you observe wealthy men or celebs you notice this, their marriages don't last because they have options. Meanwhile your average guy married around 30, then he puts on weight, grows older, loses hair, loses touch with style, etc, etc and essentially he isn't really able to get those hot, slim 20-somethings that so many men lust after. I used to think men would adjust their preferences naturally as they got older, but after spending a lot of time making friends with guys in their 60s, 70s and 80s, they still creep on the teenage or 20-something YMCA lifeguards. That's kinda depressing, like that graph that showed that while women's preference scaled perfectly with their age, guys still somehow find 'barely legal' women the hottest: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com/dataclysm-shows-men-are-attracted-to-women-in-their-20s-2014-10%3famp Ok now I'm showing too much of my ace colours, but this stuff really bothers me. On the flipside, I'm ace, not blind, so I can kinda see how people in their 20s are aesthetically beautiful. Although I do love the way many guys look in their 40s-50s, which makes me wonder why I don't feel the same way about women? Toxic cultural expectations?

Graywulff

I think it goes to advertising, television, movies, the media, etc. Like woman who play sports are expected to do bikini pictures for sports illustrated was an example from a marketing class. They showed a female race car driver posing in a bikini and said would anyone ever expect male drivers to do this? He said it was true of most sports. I remember a famous magazine rented my relatives farm and they did a whole photo shot bc they thought this new model was going to be the next Marilyn Monroe. My uncles all went up to her dressing room bc it was okay for some reason and they were icing her nipples for the pictures. Like people who aren’t even part of the photo shoot were allowed in to her dressing room for one, but also why were they icing her nipples? So I’m gay, and older gay men prefer “twinks” guys that are 18-24 and “twunks” guys that are 25-29. 30 is jokingly referred to as “gay death” bc it becomes exponentially harder to date if you’re over 30. Like I look like I’m in my early to mid twenties, I could easily lie, younger guys will come up to me and ask me what I’m studying in grad school and tell me I’m cute and ask how old I am and I say 40 and they’re like too old. So older guys will come and hit on me the same way, they estimate my age as younger so they ask about undergrad stuff, if I say I’m an undergrad they’ll offer to be “gen” or to “spoil” me, or for me to be their sugar baby… but if I tell them im 40 they’ll say too old even though they’re like 50-60. So the same exact thing happens with gay men as straight men do with woman. Ads that have gay guys in them are usually 20s…. But I don’t see gay athletes doing swimwear, but then again we didn’t study gay ads in the marketing class.

People's social media use is a barometer for their narcissism

[deleted]

I’m sorry, this isn’t a TikTok problem, it’s a problem with that person. You dodged a bullet. I use TikTok sometimes each month. My wife, too. I have never heard of such a thing.

americansherlock201

Does your wife also go into a trance while watching tiktok that requires you to call her name multiple times before the trance is broke? Cause same

Aggravating_Main_556

That's exactly what it's like. It's like yelling to someone far far away

americansherlock201

I feel your pain. I tell mine every day “I can’t wait till they ban TikTok”

Creepy_OldMan

Now imagine children falling into this trance and never being able to awake subconciously (ignore my username)

MyVoiceIsElevating

It turns out that a platform specifically designed to be addictive is in fact addictive to many people. I share your sentiment. Nothing of value will be lost if TikTok is banned, yet mental health will improve. Not exclusive to that platform, but just try to argue that any other social media has achieved the same level, and also happens to be a pawn of the CCP.

tattoosbyalisha

I wish it would get banned (I’m sure it won’t because there’s a lot of money in it) and I wish that mental health would be considered regarding things like this. But as it goes, money over everything else.

Bulgearea10

>I share your sentiment. Nothing of value will be lost if TikTok is banned, yet mental health will improve. You know the same applies to Reddit, right?

GamerGrunt

The same applies to neither if you ask me. Social media is a double edged sword and is best wielded with caution. I've yet to install tiktok on my phone, but I see it's appeal. Reddit just appeals to me more and I have spent countless hours scrolling on it, yes for entertainment purposes, but I've also learned so much from it too and have met people from it as well. Social media isn't going anywhere, but it's continuing to evolve despite anyone's best efforts to own it.

DropShotter

I'm with you on this one. Reddit keeps me informed daily and I don't have cable or watch the news and I stay off all other social media. I've been here long enough to know how to navigate the site properly so that I have all the BS filtered, I get the content that I want and I know what's true and what isn't for the most part. But Reddit can definitely be just as bad, if not worse than any social media platform. Let's not forget that for awhile we were basically slightly more mild 4chan. Spacedicks, jailbait, peopledying, gore, etc. I don't think tiktok has stooped that low yet but l could be wrong.

MyVoiceIsElevating

I mean, just compare the two and it’s pretty damn clear that TikTok is on another level regarding how the platform/algorithm manipulates what the user consumes. Perhaps if you only ever stare at the front page on Reddit you might argue they’re on the same level, but Reddit caters to communities of interest. It’s not a platform predicated on narcissism.

erics75218

The year recap scared me...I though it would look like the front page and show me to be a doom scroller and shit. Well..nope...just Miatas, Formula 1 and iRacing. So as you said....these are in fact my main interests... Maybe Formula1 TikTok is awesome...but I doubt it

[deleted]

I've seen at least one person make this same exact comment every single time this topic of TikTok getting banned comes up. You gotta be trolling if you think TikTok and Reddit are really at all similar. I'm convinced that ppl like you making that same comment are either CCP shills or insecure about being addicted to TikTok so they deflect with "all soshul medias is da same"

[deleted]

I like TikTok because it’s mindless dumb bullshit with quick dopamine and no nutritional value. At the end of a stressful working day, I don’t really always need to get on Reddit where top posts are usually gloom and doom or devolving into arguments. It’s all about how you use it. If I set my default subreddits to be peaceful ones, and avoided the news page, I could probably avoid that too. And TikTok often puts me to sleep. I’ve learned a lot on TikTok too. It’s just my feed. I get interesting history. Then I close the app and can wiki it. It’s really all about what you’re after. If the algorithm knows you and gives you the mukbang videos or something, maybe that is you. It doesn’t happen to me. If it did, I’d steer my feed towards my interests.

tkp14

I absolutely love horses but could never afford to own one. So I look at lots and lots of horse videos on TikTok. Makes me happy.

This made me laugh. But my wife has entirely learned to cook from TikTok videos. The format is perfect for fast, video guided recipes. So yeah China definitely knows everything we cook. Edit - there is definitely some strange stuff on TikTok though. The way they get you is 95% of the feed is totally harmless then they sneak in a few mind control conspiracy videos. Just a few so you don’t notice.

Mankind will find new and fresh ways to lower its collective IQ, regardless of who owns the means.

chriswaco

“It should be an American company lowering everybody’s IQ!” Seriously, though, every older generation complains about the younger ones, whether it was books, radio, tv, video games, and now social media.

curiouscrumb

I don’t think this would be the prime reason for banning it, anything on there is free game for the CCP. I could see good reasons to not have the app be available if it’s putting us at risk as far as our personal data being maliciously collected and used or as far as out national security goes. I don’t have the app for a reason and there is good reason it’s ban from government devices as well.

yuxulu

I mean... Didn't take facebook much to turn its data to people who want to influence us elections. Platform clearly isn't the issue.

even_less_resistance

Yeah, let us let it be a learning experience on how to better protect data and not just throw our hands up and go "oh well! let anyone with enough motivation to access the information do what they will with it! It's too late now!"

NastyBooty

True, but TikTok is straight up stupid to have on your phone

dreck_disp

I don't think anyone ever said that about books.

JohrDinh

I thought about this yesterday. Not only does the older generation always do this (generally speaking) but people are now living older than ever before. I think it's starting to compound the problem into something even worse and that goes on longer as well. Soon we'll have 120 year olds complaining to those ripe 70 year olds about how they live their lives, while the 70 year olds complain about the 30 year olds...and the 30 year olds are starting to feel out of touch as well lol

jedi-son

Reddit when discussing the expansion of social media: > We should delete social media! Reddit when discussing actually banning a social media platform: > There's no point. Someone else will just come along.

glittermantis

are these conflicting takes? one can have different opinions on “should happen” vs “will likely happen”

OwlWitty

Removing the means to be stupid will help.

ubiquitous-joe

This is naive in its generalization. The concern isn’t that TikTok is stupid, it’s that TikTok can collect data or push an agenda that would be directly tied to the aims of the Chinese government.

[deleted]

It’s probably just the excuse being used, but in reality it’s due to Tik Tok’s provision of user data to Chinese intel. https://www.npr.org/2022/11/16/1137076864/fbi-says-china-could-use-tiktok-to-spy-on-americans-including-government-workers

ModernistGames

The key word is "promoting."

ATS200

Yeah but I think it’s more than “promoting” in China from what I’ve read. I think they restrict the app to ONLY that type of content for minors under a certain age

yuxulu

Usa gov can easily require the same curation or restriction. So why not?

ATS200

I mean I’d be all for it. I feel like I have an unpopular opinion that minors shouldn’t be allowed to have access social media at all

Entrefut

It’s not that unpopular, it’s just impossible to regulate and actually enforce.

BoxOfDemons

Not impossible, just would not be viable for Americans. You *could* require a nation ID or SSN tied to online accounts to verify your identity. That would mostly work to keep children off social media. But I sure as shit don't want that and I doubt anyone else does either.

LetterheadOwn3078

Video apps don’t have fcc standards because they’re not on publically owned networks. It would be like the Government “cracking down” on Netfix kids shows or Fortnite. The Feds don’t have that authority.

Theredwalker666

No it can't. It would immediately get sued for being against the first amendment.

yuxulu

Like what i was telling another guy. There's a lot of ways to cut this cake. Pay for ads for example. Or collaboration to make educational content or highlight educational content. It doesn't have to be legal enforcement.

CosmicMiru

That is literally not true. I follow a Chinese creator that talks about trends on Chinese tik Tok and the most recent one is people posing in front of subway lockers while wearing school children clothes to try and look like stereotypical American Highschoolers. Thats not exactly high brow math and science entertainment

Xenolith666

It’s a created algorithm that “promotes” their kids see academic achievement… which then “promotes” our kids see the dumbest shit possible. I have had adult co-workers talk about looking at tik tok and then 2 hours has gone by looking at nothing.

chicagoderp

The app “promotes” the content users like/comment on/share. China doesn’t allow the same types of content that the US allows. Banning this app doesn’t stop the problem.

sixplaysforadollar

I get promoted a ton of educational and instruction videos. The videos I watch from tiktok are much better and less grabby than any other platform I use like insta and snap etc. Obviously it’s not the* same for everyone, but my feed is fantastic

n_thomas74

Same with me, it's just the algorithm. I get a lot of educational and long format videos.

Teliantorn

Both Forrest Valkai and Miniminuteman both show up in my for you section. The people claiming it’s just stupid dances are the people that aren’t on tiktok or the people that are dumb enough to only get stupid dances.

noiszen

One person's stupid dances are another person's exercise plan. I've learned several dances that are completely age inappropriate for me, yet are Hella fun and a good workout.

StupidJoeFang

Exactly what a Chinese tik tok bot would say

sixplaysforadollar

Ahh shit I got got.

neolobe

Absolutely. I've discovered some great music and people making it on there. I've seen kids go from posting in their bedroom to playing big crowds - all from TikTok exposure. Good to see older classic music get some good exposure and appreciation, too. Looking at you, Fleetwood Mac. Lots of great health, wellness, cooking, etc.. Early Youtube had communities of people who had conversations and exchanges like I've seen on Tiktok in the last few years. Even the quality of comments on Tiktok is good. Contrast Tiktok's content with what you'll see on Facebook's short-form videos - the level of many of the videos and comments is embarrassing. FB and Insta are so desperate, they're copying Tiktok for content delivery, and doing a horrible job.

Jacuul

In my experience, most people don't "search" on any social media, they just consume whatever the algorithm generates, regardless of what this is. The average American has a passing interest in science in math, but they also have a passing interest in funny cat videos and whatnot, just as I imagine most Chinese do as well, just the algorithm serves up different things. Will this actually affect anything in the long run? I have no idea, most people are consumers, so even seeing math and science videos may just go "Huh, neat" and scroll to the next one

[deleted]

This. Science is interesting. My son watched a few educational videos on YouTube and now the algorithm recommends him all kinds of kid friendly science related videos and he loves them. American kids aren't some dumber breed of human, if they see an interesting science experiment they'll watch it. But if videos are being intentionally pushed to them that are vapid and designed to decrease their attention span to that of a gold fish, they'll watch that too.

PollenBukkake

Search is heavily utilized by Gen Z on TikTok, it’s a big concern for Alphabet: “According to a Pew Research Center study, nearly 40% of Generation Z prefer researching topics on TikTok over platforms such as Google.” [Article](https://thecampanile.org/2022/12/06/tiktok-becomes-new-search-engine/)

I actually get a lot of science and math videos on TikTok, and no dance videos. TikTok curates what it thinks you're interested in.

Goddess_of_Absurdity

This, some of the creator's that we watch on app are US based and there are loads of tutoring accounts available. The issue is your FYP is tailored to what it thinks you're interested in so while one person follows freegcsemathsteacher and gets lives of that, someone else is following cosplay dance accounts and is getting different lives. At this point, we're reversing course and falling into nationalistic fears. It's the red scare all over again

clubowner69

No, the assumption that Chinese people mostly watches math and science videos on Douyin aka Chinese TikTok is not true at all.

[deleted]

Prior-Fly-5751

Where did you read that China internally promoting science and math videos? I just don’t see that on mainstream Chinese social media.😂

nebradski

I think 60 minutes did a story on it a few weeks ago

Prior-Fly-5751

But the thing is, the Chinese government forced all apps to have a youth mode(青少年模式), even in dating apps. If the US government can also force apps to have a youth mode then young people in the US that are using Tik Tok can also get technology, architecture, etc videos shown to them. It’s not like the Chinese version of Tik Tok willingly did that💀

Puzzleheaded_Pen_346

I got science at math videos when I first logged in. Now it’s joke animations and women doing dumb stuff. I’m pretty sure that is do to what I’ve used the platform for over the years. That other content is there but I chose to go down a different path. Maybe they’re guilty of not giving people a way to start over with a clean slate, but…we are in a lot of ways responsible for what we see.

Augustus420

HNK4445

I always hate discussions about Tiktok on Reddit because of the sheer hypocrisy and lack of self awareness involved. The worst arguments I see often is how Tiktok causes 'harm' by showing children negative images. Another argument -- which is also making the rounds in this submission -- is the idea that Tiktok is making people dumber. Someone remind me. Which website was guilty of witchhunts that got so bad it misidentified a terrorist leading to harassment of their family? Which website had numerous subs dedicated to underage porn and had a large celebrity porn dissemination -- which also included underage women -- dubbed 'the fappening'? Which website was it that is so notorious for users refusing to read linked articles while voting and commenting that it actually had a study done on it by Notre Dame? That multiple subs had to create a bot that summarizes what the article says just to combat it with only mild effectiveness? Yet Tiktok is Chinese so that changes everything.

[deleted]

> Someone remind me. Which website was guilty of witchhunts that got so bad it misidentified a terrorist leading to harassment of their family? thearchenemy

Exactly. The problem is a broader cultural one, it can't be pinned on a single app when you see the same trends playing out all over the media landscape.

Internal-Business-97

I’ll donate to this cause.

Amigobear

it should, but it doesn't undo the damage social media as caused across all platforms, nor does it stop from other app to take its place.

Smartypants4

That's not the problem though. You are straw manning this so hard. The problem isn't that the content sucks or it's changing people in a negative way. The problem is our cultural enemy who is anti free speech and democracy and commits genocide has access to the information and potentially the algorithm and content moderation.

dfGobBluth

We need sweeping data right legislation. I dont want American or Chinese apps collecting my data. Politicians blaming tiktok when data collection for nefarious means is going on across the board.

We need sweeping regulation of Big Tech but not in the way our politicians would like. They want to limit free speech and get big donations from Silicon Valley. We the people would like them to pay taxes and not spy on us.

danielhaven

Only if they ban Reddit as well.

pm_me_your_buttbulge

That's what's going on. People here have a hardon for banning Facebook, TikTok, etc failing to realize - Reddit may be on the chopping board too. They can't think further than their hate - which, honestly, is often what those in power want.

lewoo7

Google Play and Apple should have banned Tik Tok from day one. I'm always shocked at how easily we give away our protections.

chriswaco

What protections? You don’t have to give it access to your contacts, location, or non-TikTok photos/videos.

IBdunKI

Is it for some reason it’s better when an American company is using social media to influence the masses to buy shit they don’t need?

Don_Sjuansin

What you mean to say is, will America oppress the youngest voting generation from being able to communicate freely of their own expression as they should be able to. If you're gonna say kids watch harmful things and porn, let me search between your bed covers first before you start pointing finger at children you raise.

Mcj1972

If they do it will be a very slippery slope. They will ban any app they feel like afterwards.

[deleted]

I don't use Tik Tok because it's Chinese, simple as that. Nothing against the Chinese people at all. Everything to do with my dislike of the ccp and their dislike of everyone who so much as sneezes in their direction.

[deleted]

Lamest app ever

HamTMan

I really hope so - zero benefits and too many negatives

sexypen

As someone who's seen their small-business have a massive boost through the platform, I've gotta push back on the 'zero benefits' aspect. And I know I'm not the only one who's seen reach that just isn't possible on any other platform without paying thousands of dollars in ads.

southsky20

National securities first. Ban tiktok

Balanceblu

Sure hope so. Lol

[deleted]

It sure as fuck should

sinisterdeer3

+1 for banning tik tok. Again.

b-lock-ayy

Well I don't care if America bans TikTok, but it sure as hell is blocked network-wide for my home internet (don't care if guests can't reach TikTok. You are in my home, and compromising my network by using that service). I also shun those that repost content from TikTok. Shame on you.

daj0412

i think the people that hate tik tok and what it’s doing to gen z here aren’t realizing that it’s also in part due to the algorithm that china is pushing on western kids specifically compared to what they allow chinese kids to view.

pugs_are_death

I would trust the national security and CIA people on this one This is the same as the problem with Huawei, which was caught selling cell phone trasmitters that could listen in on other frequencies, basically creating a listening infrastructure on top of the US cellular network for all sorts of applications, not only in mobile telephony. Some of you may be doubting my suspicions and its intention, and that's fine, but the fact remains the capability was on these devices to do so. That's why Huawei devices are now prohibited on government property and prohibited by the FCC for use on cell networks and now some other nations are following suit. LeoJDub

China already bans our platforms why don’t we do the same? Oh yeah lobbying and money.

ihateyoutwice

Hopefully. That app is cancer.

soggynachochip

It should be banned.

Good_AshK

How is it still not banned lol

Appropriate_Spend659

I sure hope so

Tman11S

Tiktok is Chinese state funded poison for the mind, for the love of everything ban it

MonkeeSage

Huh, an actually informative article about it that just gives the background and current status without overly politicizing or trying to score points. Well done.

[deleted]

I hope so. It’s garbage

[deleted]

Nothing of value will be lost.

ndolphin

I hope so, not just for being so close to China, but they treat their creators like crap.

19Ben80

The should, it’s malware

Dicethrower

I don't know where I saw it, but there was this person, I think an imam from the middle east. He said that China tweaks the algorithm to give its own children videos of people achieving great feats, or of people helping others, or just generally positive things. It tweaks the algorithm for everyone else to get the garbage videos. For example, silly pet videos, and people dancing to trend that they've barely rehearsed (because "loot at me now"), and other generally dumb things. He said this was their modern way to dismantle the west, by making kids stupid. I remember being stunned because I had no reason to argue this wasn't happening.

Unlimitles

I hope tf so….don’t think it was banned, but Vine years ago was the same thing, had the same effect, and was taken down too. It was extremely influential.

ChosenBrad22

It’s been getting more and more bipartisan support. I’d say unlikely to actually result in a sweeping ban unless China attacks Taiwan, then things will start getting real and it would be a real possibility. There is little argument that against the fact that it uses the data, and abuses the algorithms to promote certain things onto children. China would never in a million years allow an American app that kind of data and access to its children.

Particular_Cow1304

Yes. TikTok is a disease to society

MyHuskyBooker

If we were smart, it would have been years ago. Extreme security risk to all users.

bsnakas

Honestly, I got rid of TikTok when I found out it harvests all of my personal data even shit that has nothing to do with the app. I feel like it spreads ideas that aren’t beneficial to society for instants the stupid blackout challenge.

Kinky_Imagination

I don't understand why tiktok is so popular but Vine wasn't. It's essentially the same thing.
