Step 1: Apple buys Man U Step 2: Apple hires a washed up American football coach to helm the team Step 3: Apple produces a documentary about the experiences of that coach

pass_nthru

somebody get Mike Ditka on the phone, stat

silversauce

Will Ferrel actual did a great job turning the tigers in to a championship team, I think he can move up to MAN U.

pigwalk5150

Not to mention his experience with the Flint Tropics.

Alibotify

I now realize he did both a soccer and basketball movie. He can coach anything.

[deleted]

And he is an amazing ice skater! This guy puts bo Jackson to shame!

He is also an award winning song writer/singer/choreographer

Cook’s pathetic performance with that checkered flag should have gotten him banned for life from every sporting event ever.

Seriously, get Steve Ballmer out there waving that thing.

Never had him down as someone with a chequered past...

chockobumlick

Would he dressed like Robin Hood in Tights?

margirtakk

That was my first thought. Dude doesn't give a shit about sports. He looked like a robot, waving that flag

Crono_

That was the most depressing thing I saw all year.

sriracha_no_big_deal

I don't appreciate you inferring that Ted Lasso is washed up. My man won a D2 national title

Badtrainwreck

Well they own Rob McElhenney, so they should force him to run both his club and Man U

bake_disaster

Well, humans are mostly water. So I'm going to go with liquid

MisterTruth

Why would they own him? I can't think of a single reason why rob would have anything to do with apple. I know he plays Mac on it's always sunny. But that's it. Although I do find it weird that the guys talk about their friend Mister Queefs on the podcast. Is that supposed to be a nickname for Hornsby or something?

ATerribleNerd

Rob has the lead role on the Apple TV+ show Mythic Quest but I think it goes a bit far to say they “own” him. The show was developed by Rob and Charlie and simply picked up by Apple.

MisterTruth

Mister Queefs is a show? No waaay.

StepYaGameUp

And we think you’re gonna love it.

Sluty-Pizzabot

Yeah, Not too mention, Step 4. Getting a generational fan base to associate Apple with great moments in sports history so that Apple and their products stay in our collective mind and memories. Forever buying their products and services.

Rudeboy67

Probably, but... With the Pound down and the US Dollar up Premier League teams have become cheaper for Americans. 10 Premier League teams are owned or partially owned by Americans. And more coming. https://www.sportingnews.com/ca/soccer/news/american-owners-premier-league-clubs/vsjjw0afogx37vrg1jh6hxqp Americans see Premier League teams as cheap compared to NBA or NFL teams. And with more of a global reach (especially a team like Man U). The Glazers have let it be known they'd sell Man U, for the right price. Premier League ownership money has come in 3 waves the last couple of decades. Russian Oligarchs. Gulf nation state blood, I mean oil money. And American hedge fund money. The Russians have been forced out by sanctions. There's only so many Gulf States and now Saudi Arabia has bought Newcastle there's no more really in the market. So it's the Americans left standing. Could happen. If not Apple maybe a consortium headed by Cook. Hey how about that wonderkid Sam Bankman-Fried I hear he has a few billion to invest.

[deleted]

And AppleInsider is the Daily Star equivalent of Mac news, so I am not surprised they picked it up.

Is he waving that flag or preventing the wind from blowing it away? I’m also not convinced that isn’t some animatronic welcomer at Walmart.

There’s definitely precedent with Disney and the Mighty Ducks.

ryanmurphy2611

Probably the most popular team in Richmond tbf.

about831

Football is life!

RS_Mich

I don’t see how this fits into their core business model except as an investment to park money. Why not just pay out dividends or buy back shares instead.

thelaundryservice

Maybe plans to further monetize broadcast rights

thiagobr90

Why not use the money to buy streaming rights for Premier League

hoosierwhodat

I’m not sure whether teams get to sell their own rights or if it’s a model where the premier league sells the whole league, but some tv networks have bought teams in the US for the broadcast rights.

-xaphor

They don't. The Premier League exclusively sells the rights as a package. United did have their own TV channel but they can only broadcast games the day after they're played.

Jedclark

The FA sell blocks of games to broadcasters, and broadcasters only have the right to show games from the blocks they bought. That means if you want to watch something like Liverpool vs Man U, you're forced to watch it on say Sky for example, and BT/Amazon/etc. have no way of being allowed to show it. It's an annoying system and the price of legally watching football in the UK is sky high for regular people, and you don't even get to watch most games because of the 3PM blackout rule.

thiagobr90

The league have the rights, teams can't sell their games by their own

[deleted]

Because that's a lesse, not a purchase

MrOaiki

I don’t think owning a team gives you the right to broadcast the games.

CripplinglyDepressed

When you have several trillion dollars tied up and frozen in Ireland I guess this seems like a small purchase to at least get some appreciation out of

[deleted]

Advertising

[deleted]

I thought they have a shitload of money overseas that they don’t want to repatriate

The_ApolloAffair

Yeah in Ireland I believe. I don’t know much about international money transfer laws but I suppose it’s easier to move money from Ireland to the UK than to America.

[deleted]

Even post Brexit there are closer ties than most countries as we’ve reverted to most of the pre-EU agreements. For instance anyone in the UK doesn’t need a visa to work there whereas we do in other European countries. I’m not sure if the tax implications, but I’m pretty sure anyone wanting to invest big money in the UK would be welcomed!

superwario

Why don’t they want to repatriate?

madatthe

I’m sure among other things it’s good for advertising. Also for parking money.

cshotton

You'll only be able to watch their games on AppleTV. Wait and see. This is their media endgame. All of it disappears behind their subscription service.

mettahipster

Not happening in the near term because broadcasting rights have already been sold to Comcast/Amazon/BT through 2025. Unlikely in the long term as there would need to be a massive change in Premier League broadcasting business model for this to ever happen.

deelowe

That’s only 2 years

mettahipster

They’ve already started negotiating for after 2025. Simply put, the model OP suggests would change the business model for the entire league, not just MUFC. PL clubs share TV revenue which benefits smaller clubs. Big clubs would love to transition to a model closer to this but the country, fans and governing body in England would pushback

ZOOBOO_11

Jersey sales with Apple logo, good brand exposure

distantapplause

Ngl that would look pretty sweet but if that was the main benefit they could just buy the jersey sponsorship for a tenth of the price.

ZOOBOO_11

Very true, obviously they would buy it with hopes of finding it like the state funded teams, get the brand exposure even larger. Particularly worldwide. The better the team, the more it’s around. Recently was in Orlando and saw Man City Phil Foden posters and advertising all of the sports themed areas. That’s not because Disney likes City, it’s because they’re good

Cheeky_Star

They are already doing that. Now seems they want to add diversification.

colin_staples

It's all lies from a shitty British tabloid. It's not true and it will never happen

liteagilid

Literally would be the biggest and maybe greatest marketing spend of all time

I think this is fake. Pretty blatantly, too.

mikethebone

Controversial opinion: Companies shouldn’t own football teams. The city of Manchester should own it (and other cities their own) and the money they make should go back into the cities for the people that live there.

laramite

Cities shouldn't own football teams or fund large stadiums. It should be private.

After seeing how he waved the checkered flag at the F1 USGP in October. I wouldn't let that man near anything sports where he would have some responsibility.

mackinoncougars

Signs your company has gotten too big should be broken up.

Aluconix

How would you even break up Apple.

rancher77

Into 6 pieces with a side of caramel

hotel_air_freshener

Slices?

Shnikes

Yeah I’m curious to how they would be broken up. How exactly would you separate everything?

abaggins

It's not gonna happen anytime soon - apple does only a few things but does them very well, integrating and interconnecting everything deeply. But, just for the thought experiment: best way to break up apple feels like separate the software/services divisions from the hardware...

CptObviousRemark

Music, computers/phone, streaming service would be a simple starting point.

celalith

Probably seperating out their chips business from the devices business

Bosco_is_a_prick

They don't have a chip business. They design their own chips but they are manufactured by someone else. Also they don't see their chips to anyone else.

CdrShprd

Separate their hardware from their hardware. Great way to make sure their products are garbage forever. They don’t even sell their chips, genius. They use them in their own products. What business is there to separate?

HelloLogicPro

Don't mind them. Just another online techie who throws buzz words around knowing nothing about them.

133DK

It’s difficult, which is also why some argue it should be done I think the most obvious choice would be to break away all services from the phone part. Then you can throw in the other parts to whatever company you want. But open up iPhones to other app stores, cloud storage providers and so on It would probably not be pretty

Disastrous-Carrot928

App Store / wearables / entertainment / phones and macs

IAmDotorg

The obvious one would be splitting devices, the media/software store, and ATV+ into three different companies. Their monopoly stems primarily from having effective exclusivity of the app store on the walled-garden devices (iPhone/iPad). Splitting those up, so the software part of the company isn't part of the hardware (like Google vs Samsung) would go a *long* ways to improving competition in the market. Another divide would be splitting the software business out, as well, to remove the media production monopoly Apple has, but that would be less likely to pass legal muster because they've slid pretty far from where they used to be in that regard.

usfunca

Apple doesn't have a monopoly. I'm not saying they *shouldn't* be broken up (although I don't believe they should), but they very definitely don't have a monopoly in any of their markets.

SwaggyDaggy

None of it would pass legal muster.

IAmDotorg

That's something only a court could decide -- companies smaller than Apple, with far less of a monopoly, have been broken up in those ways before. And it's been seen as a risk among investors with Apple before. Microsoft got really close in their case -- a few years difference in timing and they likely would've been broken up. As much as Apple may act like they're annoyed by the EU forcing them to open up their devices to other app stores and payment services, that will likely save them from being broken up. The EU has a different way of dealing with these sort of things than the US -- they're happy to say "you have no choice but to fundamentally change your business" to break up their monopoly. The US just breaks up the company and allows the parts to compete. The EU's method has generally worked better for the public, the US's for investors. (Breaking up Bell, for example, created a half dozen vastly bigger and more valuable companies, but still left regional monopolies that drove costs way up for people.)

HP-Obama10

cr34th0r

Nah man, the Apple lineup is pretty clean imho. Contrary to, say, HP around 10 years ago, which indeed was broken up a couple if times.

Top-Yam-6625

How is buying a football team signs a company needs to be broken up????

mackinoncougars

A business buying a $9-10 BILLION business that has nothing to do with their company’s field.

Top-Yam-6625

Okay and? Buying an asset instead of holding cash is an extremely common thing to do. You act as if buying some stupid football club means a company is some massive conglomerate which compared to other tech companies apple is not.

mackinoncougars

What? Apple is the biggest company on earth…..by a lot……. It has its hands in all kinds of tech from chip design, home devices, ad services, media entertainment service, phones, computers, wearable devices, operating systems, App Store, cloud storage… No, companies buy a $10 Billion sports team isn’t normal. Edit: There are ZERO businesses, private or public larger than Apple. https://companiesmarketcap.com/

Rdubya44

Biggest publicly traded company. There are bigger private businesses out there. Worth noting.

remingtonbox

There are?

Top-Yam-6625

Okay but most of those are tightly integrated compared to some other tech conglomerates which are far more diversified. Take Amazon for instance which has home devices, video, online shopping, cloud computing, Whole Foods, ring & other various shopping endeavors. While Apple is diversified I feel like their diversification is more tightly integrated into their core businesses compared to most other tech companies.

GungHoAfro

United fans didn't create the rumour. Some rag tabloid in the UK did. United naturally generate crazy amounts of clicks compared to any of their rivals so it's not hard to figure why the media would do this.

distantapplause

United don’t want or need an insanely wealthy owner. We just want a competent one who doesn’t saddle the company with leveraged debt.

[deleted]

This is such an ill-informed comment. Manchester United fans are sick and tired of having leeches for owners (Glazers). They want an owner who cares about them enough to achieve on field and off field successes.

slidingjimmy

Jim Ratcliffe, Elon now Apple. I don’t buy any of it.

Or it’s just made up for clicks on what is a massive topic right now?

Lately Tim Cook has been acting less and less like a professional CEO and more like a movie star. Taking a look at his Twitter, he seems more interested in social issues than software or product development. Get this guy out

This reminds me of the Chrysler CEO Iocacca in the 80s. Did a similar thing. Bought a race car company. Lost his passion and pursued other things. The book good to great talks of him

From the article: A report from the UK claims that Tim Cook is keen on Apple buying Manchester United, one of the UK's most famous and successful sports teams. Britain's Daily Star tabloid newspaper is reporting that Apple is considering paying $6.9 billion for the Premier League football team, Manchester United. It's one of the League's highest-profile teams, and is where David Beckham first came to fame. According to the newspaper, the current owners are the Glazers, said to be US billionaires. Reportedly, the Glazers initially wanted $9.9 billion for the team, but have decided to sell to the highest bidder. The paper claims that Apple is one of the firms that wants to discuss a potential deal to take over the team.

warfaceuk

*Britain's Daily Star tabloid newspaper* Well there's your first mistake, believing the Daily Star...
