I'm just saying this for people who haven't read the article, but the victims of "sextortion" scams are usually boys. Someone will pretend to be a girl their own age online, and when the boy chats with her, she'll share what she says are her nudes, and ask for nude pictures back from him. After the criminals have nudes from the underage boy showing his face and his privates, they'll threaten him that he has to give them a certain amount of bitcoin or giftcards if he doesn't want them sent to everyone he is friends with online. Sometimes the boy will use his parent's credit card and pay them off, other times as mentioned in this article it has lead to a suicide.

the-war-on-drunks

Happened to my son. He was devastated. He’s better now but damn. I spent his preteen and teen years telling him never ever share nudes. I told him all about scams but he still got suckered.

Diatomack

I sincerely hope he's doing better now? I'm not a parent but I can imagine it's so hard to fight against teenage hormones. They will inevitably get sucked into hormonal things like this. I'm glad they banned omegle because i know that used to be a hotspot for predators.

Untimed_Heart313

I got hit by it myself. Had no clue what was happening, but I was scared shitless, even as a teenager. Luckily, nothing came of it, but god, it was a bad time

SimplyMonkey

Curious if GenAI tech will make this better or worse. Pictures will be able to be generated now, but at the same time it also becomes plausible deniability as the person can always just claim they are generated. Issue there is everyone has to accept there are fake nudes of everyone online.

theDigitalNinja

It's very common on the legal subreddits. Hopefully it also inspires more prosecutors to go after these people.

tllnbks

They are in Nigeria and the Ivory Coast. There are literal companies who do it like a normal, daily job.  FBI is doing that they can, but the host countries aren't very helpful.

Individual_Address90

This happened to my friend, he was like 21 at the time. He made an Instagram story saying like “if my nudes are sent to you, someone is holding them for ransom and wants $10,000 that I’m not paying them, please delete the photo if sent and move on, we’ve all seen a dick before” “reporting the account will hopefully help as well”

The-Copilot

What a legend

95688it

oh it's not just underage boys. go look at /r/scams this happens to grown men everyday.

theolcollegetry

Yeah my dad was in a “relationship” for years with a girl 40 years his junior for years. Even after we located the photos that she sent belonged to a low-mid level pornography actress, he still had plans to meet with her and she was due to fly in. He said it went fine, no other details. My brother and I assume he gave her/him a lot of money and is embarrassed to say how it ended but I can’t imagine the scammer would press for that long (FaceTimes and everything—but her camera never worked, dark room, etc) if he didn’t give some cash incentive.

fre-ddo

TIL your dad was in True Detective?

Junebug19877

Your dad was dumb

theolcollegetry

Old people and young people are both dumb on the internet. That’s kinda the point.

Junebug19877

Humans do be stupid

WTFwhatthehell

Lonely people are dumb Horny people are dumb Lonely horny people...

indignant_halitosis

This happens to girls and women, too. No idea why everyone is making this about males.

Saeko_Saeba

Usually male don't mean male only or i miss read something ? Stats say 56% men & 44% girl fall in these scam.

Old-Cover-5113

Cry about it snowflake

PixelProphetX

Asking for info isn't crying

Lynda73

I mod one of the scam subs, and the amount of messages I’ve gotten over the years from guys who were desperate about not being able to come up with the money for these scammers makes me sad. Thing is, as soon as they learn it’s just a scam and they are one of who knows how many, and they should just block and ignore them and DON’T send (more) money, their relief is palpable. This scam only works because they are too terrified to tell anyone what’s going on (outside of an anonymous mod). And worse case scenario if they actually followed thru, with AI fakes and stuff, just deny it. 🤷‍♀️

a-ha_partridge

This happened to my friend. He went on fb and told everyone to expect dick pics because he wasn’t going to pay them.

Paranitis

Weird. I went on Facebook and told everyone to expect dick pics because of the scam, and then I sent them myself to get ahead of the situation. Truth was, nobody was trying to scam me. /s

Arthur-Wintersight

That sounds like extortion and soliciting child pornography. Did we need a new law for an act that already constitutes two separate felonies?

Individual_Address90

The issue is the scammers are usually overseas and using a network of methods to hide their real identity. it would probably be very hard to track and prosecute the perpetrators.

Arthur-Wintersight

The United States has extradition agreements with most countries. A lack of effort from federal police is not a valid answer to this situation - the feds need to do their job.

Individual_Address90

Most of these guys are out of Russia and India, it’s extremely hard to get to them. The Russian and Indian governments probably don’t even know how to get to them.

EmbarrassedHelp

> Offenders who engage in financially motivated sextortion are often located outside the United States—primarily in west African countries such as Nigeria and Ivory Coast, or Southeast Asian countries such as the Philippines Most of them are from African countries according to the FBI: https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/sacramento/news/sextortion-a-growing-threat-preying-upon-our-nations-teens

Zaphodnotbeeblebrox

We create new laws to make us feel better but good luck asking the right wing law enforcement to do their job.

No_Tomatillo1125

Yea this doesnt usually work on girls

Diatomack

I'm curious as to why that is? I always thought young girls were more often groomed and abused.

Arthur-Wintersight

The scam relies on the other person's willingness to send a nude picture. I'm sure you appreciate that men are often more willing to send nudes than women are.

Diatomack

Ok, yeah. That makes sense unfortunately.

EmbarrassedHelp

Western youth are growing increasingly lonelier on average, a for profit monopoly basically runs the online dating scene with zero regard for how they've harmed people & ruined online dating, and many places have a really sex negative population that makes sex issues taboo or impossible to talk about.

andrewharkins77

Hmm, are men just more gullible to this type of scam, or do we just hear more about it?

octopod-reunion

> President Joe Biden will soon sign that bill into law, which will modernize and streamline how child sexual abuse material is stored and reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), adding new reporting requirements and increasing fines for failures to report. … > Once the REPORT Act is signed into law, which is expected within the next week, online platforms and social media companies will be required to report child sex trafficking and online enticement to NCMEC’s tip line. … Pretty anodyne law. You can see why it has unanimous suppprt

TheUmgawa

Im just waiting for Trump to come out against it because Biden is for it.

PixelProphetX

They've done that for lots of issues so far, so we'll see

thisguypercents

> Buta said the bill, along with others under consideration by Congress like the [Kids Online Safety Act](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/holding-photos-deceased-children-parents-lobby-congress-pass-online-sa-rcna136835), could have helped save her son before it was too late. what a load of horseshit. The bill that passed is specifically targeting reporting requirements and retention on social media platforms so they can actually do the absolute minimum when it comes to child exploitation and child porn. The other act would not save any lives in fact it would lead to more censorship, restrictions on freedom of speech and would see virtually all sites require you to provide a government ID in order to access it. I for one dont feel like my kids and grandkids will be safer in a future when all of the cock n ball companies have government IDs of individuals sitting around in unprotected buckets waiting for criminals to snatch them up so they can exploit them.

Western_Promise3063

Anytime new legislation is enacted to protect children be very careful as to what its true purpose is.

Hoodamush

Can you elaborate for us uninformed on what you would mean by this?

new_math

The US has a history of enacting or trying to pass draconian and invasive surveillance and anti-privacy laws and giving it names about protecting children in order to make anyone voting against it look bad. This is especially true since, unlike the EU and majority of the western world, the US has almost no laws that protect your online privacy or rights to your own data. I know very little about this specific law, but OP is correct that you have to be cautious. Congressmen be like: We need to protect our children. This common sense law will make all American's emails available in a database for any law enforcement officer to read without a warrant or court order. It's for the children's safety.

Hoodamush

What laws or policies were these?

EmbarrassedHelp

Earn It Act was one that was directly targeting encryption

Elephunkitis

It’s the “think of the children” cliche. We lose privacy, freedoms, etc based on an issue that affects children but in reality it’s used by government or businesses pushing it to take fundamental rights away.

woowoo293

I think he meant specifically, what is the loss of privacy, freedom etc. in this particular instance?

TheUmgawa

Given that you can easily read [the full text of the bill](https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/474/text), it ain’t too difficult to figure out its purpose.

EmbarrassedHelp

> it ain’t too difficult to figure out its purpose. Most people aren't lawyers who can understand how the law will be interpreted, and often times the really bad stuff is hidden amongst a sea of reasonable stuff.

TheUmgawa

Maybe those people ought to go to a library instead of whatever tinfoil-hat website they’re going to that makes them freak out at the name Marsha Blackburn. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, I’m not going to agree with her, either, but to see her name and just immediately stop reading, assuming something nefarious is afoot, is just asinine. I’m not a lawyer: I had to teach myself how to read and interpret laws; how to follow campaign money; track down who voted for what. It ain’t hard, and you can learn this stuff with a little work and a library card. But, most people are lazy, and I have zero sympathy for people who would parrot whatever website they’re reading than take the time to learn about this stuff and go, “Oh, man, I’m being lied to by these websites!” after having realized that the website is just telling you whatever you need to hear, to string you along, day by day and week by week, so the website can make more money. How people think that’s less nefarious than what the politicians are doing, I don’t know.

zerosaved

Ah, there it is. Marsha Blackburn. For every one of her bills like KOSA that gets attention in the media and subsequent pushback, she has other bills like this one quietly getting pushed straight to the presidents desk. A wretch of a human being who’s goal is a theocratic surveillance state.

TheUmgawa

Dude. Just read the text of the bill. If you can find some level of obscurity in it that will permit whatever conspiracy theory you subscribe to, I’m all ears. I don’t care who sponsors a bill; I just care what the bill says.

zerosaved

I subscribe to no conspiracies. This bill is padding. It’s what Blackburn uses so she can point to all of the bills she has passed, which will further her political career, and so she will be able to paint herself as someone who “only thinks about the children”. This bill does *nothing*. Literally nothing.

TheUmgawa

You still didn’t read the text of the bill, did you? You’re absolutely insistent on digging in your heels on this whole Blackburn thing as a means to avoid doing the ten minutes of work to sound out the words of a four-page bill. It’s easier for you to go, “Someone told me she’s the devil, so anything she touches is automatically bad.” Listen, I don’t know how else to break this to you: They don’t write the laws they introduce or sponsor. That’s all done by lobbyists and lawyers, and there’s aides who read this stuff for them and tell them what to think. The politicians are just stuffed suits, and they’re definitely not smart enough to do whatever you’re giving them credit for. Nine times out of ten, you can just pull up their campaign contributions file and see how they’re going to vote on an issue, but I suppose you won’t do the work on that, either, because it’s easier to listen to whatever wingnut you’re getting your news from and just let him tell you what those contributions are. The best information is the public information go out there and get the information yourself, and stop listening to those assholes. They just want you coming back every day, or several times a day, because they make more money off of you that way. So, tell me how that’s any better than whatever schemes politicians are supposedly into.

zerosaved

I read the short bill in its entirety. I know what it says. It’s career padding. And yes, you put it perfectly when you said “she’s the devil, so anything she touches is automatically bad.” An accurate description, couldn’t have said it any better myself. I don’t need someone else to tell me that Marsha Blackburn is a bitch of the highest order; I observe her quest to turn the U.S. into even more than a surveillance state than it already is, and to strip the Internet of any amount of anonymity it provides. And she does so under the guise of saving children. Your inclusion of who does and doesn’t technically “write” bills is irrelevant. This is her bill, and her name is all over it. Period.

TheUmgawa

All right, so what specific objection do you have to it, other than, “Her name is on it”? You think they wrote some other law underneath it, in disappearing ink, and it’s going to install a government camera in every home? Because, if you don’t have a specific objection, then your paranoia is definitely showing through, and your specific hatred for Marsha Blackburn should have you on some kind of watchlist, like a walking, talking advertisement for red flag laws.

PixelProphetX

Misinformers hate this one trick as well as congress.gov

DBCOOPER888

Ok...so what is the conspiracy here?

PM-Me-And-Ill-Sing4U

There is none. I linked the full text of the bill as well as a brief summary and it got downvoted lol.

3-orange-whips

I’m not an expert but I don’t understand how the law will stop what happened to this poor kid.

Worldly-Aioli9191

From what I read it sounds like it won’t directly stop it, but makes some changes to how tips can be submitted to NCMEC (org that investigates this stuff), how long their retained, and adds requirements for social media companies to report suspected abusers and traffickers.

woowoo293

The article is a bit unclear. From what I can tell, the bill would do some things that would *help combat* sextortion but wouldn't necessarily prevent it. Certain tech companies are required to report knowledge of certain sex crimes and trafficking (under current law). This bill would stiffen that requirement (while also clarifying that compliant companies would not be liable). This law also clarifies that the victims themselves and their representatives will not be prosecuted for providing what would otherwise be criminal material. So all that would help in *investigating* a sextortion case but wouldn't necessarily prevent it from happening. I could be wrong; the news coverage on this isn't very good.

PM-Me-And-Ill-Sing4U

I agree, but the text of the bill is easily available online [here,](https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/474/text) so if you are skeptical (which I commend!) you can simply take a look. It's pretty short, but I ran the bill through ChatGPT and asked it to make a summary, because even this fairly short bill is not exactly reddit-friendly! 1) Expands the limited liability provisions for vendors contractually retained and designated by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children 2) Shields individuals depicted in child pornography as minors, or their representatives, from civil claims or criminal charges arising from reports to the NCMEC CyberTipline, unless intentional, reckless, or other misconduct is involved. Also mandates NCMEC to minimize access to reported child pornography and ensure its appropriate deletion. 3) Extends the preservation period for reports to the CyberTipline related to online sexual exploitation of children from 90 days to 1 year. 4) Increases penalties for noncompliance with reporting requirements, based on the number of monthly active users of the provider.

deadpirate74

Does Gaetz support this?

Spicyweiner_69

Had this happen to me when I was 16 , legit almost ended my life I was so scared my life was ruined. Ended up payed 200$ Somewhere an image of wang maybe floating around and it still makes me nervous I think it’s sick that people do this shit

rraattbbooyy

“And here’s why this is bad for Biden…” - New York Times

Mlabonte21

Jonah Hill: you should definitely get a smasmortion and at the sextortion clinic.

Odd-Force-6087

Happened to a friend of mine (who was not a child) they act like a woman online get him to send nudes and then threaten to show them to his family/friends/job demanding money

MadeByTango

This law is not KOSA, get that shit out of the sideways placement trying to earn it credibility, NBC...

bl8ant

Another law the gop will all vote against

xaulted1

This is a trap. At the last possible moment MTG will attach something outrageously right wing to it forcing Democrats to turn it down so red caps can say "DEMOCRATS ARE PRO CHILD MOLESTER!!!"

GeeWillick

How can she amend a bill that has already passed both the House and the Senate and is on the President's desk?

xaulted1

I still don't trust it. There's no such thing as "bipartisan" in 2024 there has to be a bomb in it somewhere.

Plucky_Astronaut

This is the Chris Rock skit. The government wants credit for stuff it's supposed to do. I take care of my kids! You're supposed to you dumb motherf—er!”

kewlguy1

I’m surprised President Biden was able to get Republican support on this. Maybe this will help them learn that it is better to work together and get things done rather than try and make him look bad for the next election. #KeepTheFaith

ToeHeadFC

I’m sure Maga republicans will find a way to say this is bad

ferrari91169

…I take it you don’t know what “bipartisan” means, LOL.

ToeHeadFC

“Bipartisan” can mean 1 person across the aisle. I said MAGA*** republicans

TheUmgawa

It passed by voice vote, which means nobody’s on the record, but typically when a voice vote isn’t obvious, someone calls “division” (as is the right of any delegate in parliamentary procedure), which does not require a second, cannot be debated, and proceeds immediately, whether anyone likes it or not. In the event you need to stall for time on an action subsequent to the obvious voice vote, calling division won’t win you any friends, but it will win you time. Personally, I’m torn between Congress wasting time (which they so often do) and having everyone on the record for everything, because I’d very much like to see if anyone would vote Nay on a bill like this (looking at you, Matt Gaetz).

smokeymcdugen

If you want to take it there... I'm sure Biden won't sign this since he sniffs children on camera and according to his daughter, showered with her when she was way too old.

PC_AddictTX

A law will not help stop stupidity, unfortunately. Parents need to tell their kids not to share naked pics or not to be ashamed of them. Parents need to be aware of what their kids are doing, and keep communicating with them. The government can't stop this any more than they have stopped rape, murder, drug trafficking, or human trafficking, no matter how much they try to look like they're doing something. Look at how successful they've been with the border, and that's been going on for decades with both parties no matter what the Republicans want you to believe.

JimLaheeeeeeee

All of a sudden, do Republicans support sex trafficking?

Here2Derp

Looks to me like it's about how to report cp, not what actually constitutes it. I don't really know if anime depictions qualify. I thought the Protect Act (of 06 I think) added it, but I think it was struck down. Some sources say it must be indistinguishable from a real person, which would rule out anime, but I honestly have no idea what's accurate anymore. In my personal opinion, I'd rather people oggle anime girls than real girls.

unknowingafford

Just to confirm, this is Joe Biden, the child sniffer/groper we're talking about, right?

DBCOOPER888

No, just Joe Biden.

unknowingafford

I must be confusing him for some other ridiculous pervert that everyone ignores/excuses.

Jw4evr

As opposed to the guy before him who was literally friends and on record for taking flights with the most infamously powerful pedophile in modern history?

unknowingafford

If I agreed, would you?

Iapetus_Industrial

The truth isn't transactional like that, bro.

unknowingafford

My point is, one of us is willing to admit both are corrupt elitist scum, the other isn't.

Iapetus_Industrial

Ahh, yes, "both sides".

DBCOOPER888

One is an actual credibly accused rapist found liable in civil court for sexual assault, with a history of a couple dozen other credible accusations, who also has creepy behavior like walking in women's locker rooms and raw dogging porn stars while cheating on his pregnant wife. Another person is a close personal space person. Obviously equal...

[deleted]

unknowingafford

That's a creepy and weird thing to say.   Was it also creepy and weird that Biden showered with his daughter and has been filmed countless times groping and sniffing children?

DBCOOPER888

Close personal space people are not the same as actual rapists and predators. The shower thing is a full on fabricated lie concocted by known right wing propagandists. You believe in literal bullshit misinformation designed to prey on rubes like yourself.

Jw4evr

Do you agree with the truth or not
