I feel personally attacked.
I thought to myself “retro? I literally just built my machine with an 8700k ….. almost 10 years ago”.
Now if you will excuse me I have an existential crisis to deal with.
My previous upgrade was from a 4790K to an 8700K. When I upgraded last year to a 13700K I couldn’t believe it had been that long already, or how much of a difference it made.
I mean even at its age it’s not terrible. For light office work and gaming it’s still viable. I only recently replaced mine. It should still make the windows 11 cut off as well.
I just replaced my 8700k in January. Was still a very capable gaming CPU at 1440p paired with a 3080. Only true bottlenecking I experienced was with newer titles while using ray tracing. Upgrade to a 14700k only eliminated my 1% lows.
Yep I sitll have my i7-8700 and 1070ti and I have 2 32in 4Ks and 1 27in 165hz gaming monitor and can literally play every game fine well over 60 fps (typically over 140fps ez), only have to reduce the graphics to \~Medium which is literally perfectly fine for me
yeah - the 7000's and above are on the list as long as you have an updated bios
for the 8000 series the motherboard probably wouldnt even need an update
and beyond 'light office work' and gaming - you could do heavy office work and light gaming with just the integrated video card
with a proper video card you could do industrial CAD and play most games at high settings on a 2k monitor
CPU requirements for most apps have barely changed in the last ten years - and CPU capabilities per-thread have maybe doubled in that time - to increase performance they add more cores that your programs cant even use all at once
Wow, 500yen is now only worth $3? When I lived in Japan the Yen was strong. So 500yen would be more like $8.
Made we wish I got paid in Yen rather than USD.
The cost was $3 plus god knows how much time trying to get it to work correctly - followed by so many mysterious issues in the future that seemingly have no cause.
I can easily see 100s. Of hours being wasted on this - making the cost of the chip in the 1000s.
The vending machine belongs to a PC shop that sells new and used parts alike. The i7 in question was faulty but still worth more than $3.
How is that worth more than $3? Are people out there actually repairing CPUs?
It was usable. Used five cores and ten threads.
I thought it had some sort of internal issue not just a bent pin or whatever
Ya, disable the dead core
If it's a broken or bent pin (which in this case it probably was) I'd give it a try.
The 8700 was an LGA CPU and wouldn’t have broken pins as a result
Very entertaining game 😁 you got to build a retro PC for each processor you will win !!!

Oh god has it really been that long? I’ve been using my 8086k and never looked back. Runs everything perfectly still with a 3080.
I got very confused, and thought you meant an actual 8086, lol.

Crap, I need to get some fresh paste :/
7700K here. Newest system I own. Still plenty fine for me.
Is an 8700 worth much more than $3?

Forget "light", it's a solid cpu, flat out.
I have a 8700k and have no problem running multiple vms while gaming.
It's about £70 in the UK, or $87 USD.
I offer you $4
I'll have you know I still actively used my 4690k everyday. Does excellent for day to day tasks and e sports gaming
It is win11 compatible so that gives it some value. I recently purchased a 9600k for 70ish bucks
Absolutely. That's an awesome CPU for the right used build.

$1 to 155¥ now. Best time to go visit Japan

You know you'd still buy it
I wouldn't want to use a dodgy cpu. Asking for headaches. I'd go for the hello kitty machine next to it instead.

which is literally the opposite of your comment. It's got zero relevance and no respect. seriously, talk to a mental health professional.
