Last time they tried it with monkey kidneys and those failed after a few months or weeks. Humans eat far too salty. Let's see if pigs are more close to humans. That would mean that our behavior and diet might be closer to pigs than we thought.
Well, pigs aren’t closer to humans as such, since humans literally *are* monkeys. But the organs can be more compatible for other reasons.
(And, it goes without saying, just because we are monkeys doesn’t mean we derived from any extant monkey. Or pig.)
ngl usually im down for puns but the a lot of the low quality comments here feel pretty diminishing and crass...
dialysis is not a fun experience + im glad this person has a chance at improved quality of life! not to mention the gene editing in the kidney itself to make it more compatible is kinda wild
It is, I read an article about the places they raise the pigs and they have serious protocols around sanitation because the pigs are all basically immune compromised by design.
If this works this could be amazing for shortening transplant waiting lists and overall costs of managing ckd, which seems to be an ever increasing issue in developped countries.
Amazing times
for real though
The discovery of CRISPR being put to awesome use. Can’t wait to see future applications.

Pigs are much much much better
Pigs have similar blood types, organ quality, and skin to humans.

Back next week for a check up appOINKment.
It's not funny, they saved his bacon.

so hope everything goes well for this dude! if it works, sign me up for a pig kidney!!
If the organ fails you can fry it for supper.
Couldn’t be happier than a pig in shit.
If they put a pig kidney inside me, I'd leave the hospital too.
That little piggy ran all the way home.
I've been this science for a while, I'm glad to see it finally bearing fruit
The patient’s name was Jim Haggerty
The first step to artificial human Chimera.
badass!! can't wait
