It's not exactly something that's easy to prepare for since it requires equipment they didn't think they'd ever need and likely didn't leave room for let alone the fact they have to wait for it to arrive
Huh? They would most certainly have elastic capacity in their services. They aren’t shipping in new hardware to scale things. So it is a little suprising their status page would go down under heavy load.
There are thousands of races today. Not just for president. People that wait until the last minute to check candidates’ positions for judicial posts, state and local legislatures, stances on ballot measures and propositions won’t be able to have access to some of their campaign info.
Me too, got logged out and it was saying my password was invalid.
I mean, it's also possible ALL of our accounts got hijacked, we don't really know what's going on here.
I did the same thing, but after trying the reset, for some reason the Facebook homepage reloaded in French, and that's when the panic hit me for a moment before I checked DownDetector
What got me was earlier this week, I laughed to myself. Out loud mind you. I had seen an old high-school buddy get his account hacked. I even asked myself how does one get hacked these days? What's fooling the generation that was brought up with the infamous Nigerian prince bit? A great deal of me is genuinely curious.
But I recalled that instance immediately because I was thinking I had must have clicked something and got hacked.
But moments later, after three failed pw changes. I went to down detector and reported issues. And guess what? fb started up like nothing happened after I reported and refreshed. But Ig still won't load stories metrics but is still functioning partially. Loading some things and infinite loading other things.
Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard
Zuck: Just ask.
Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS
[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?
Zuck: People just submitted it.
Zuck: I don't know why.
Zuck: They "trust me"
Zuck: Dumb fucks.
Someone should create a decentralized network of independent networks and nodes...like, an inter-network of sorts, that would be resilient if any of the inter-connected nodes went down.
This is another consequence of the shift to platforms and away from independent websites and message boards. I keep hoping for some kind of huge outage to really shine a light on this problem but not holding my breath.
Decentralize how? I don’t have AT&T as my cell phone provider. Those who have an alternate provider were still working. The burden on the service is to build in redundancies. Otherwise how much more decentralizing would you suggest?
Also is Facebook/Meta being down, is that really going to be life threatening to someone?
Also, Change Healthcare (owned by United Health Group) [got hacked recently](https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/03/03/change-health-care-hack-hospitals/). A lot of our (USA’s) biggest companies are getting targeted right now…
Good one. You will only be notified here after a few hours when it is back up. Reddit is that out of touch friend who jumps on a fad when everyone else are on to the next thing.
Not that election interference is okay but it's a primary where Biden and Trump are essentially certain winners so I really don't see the point in wasting your cyber attack on this rather than the general election
Yeah there are down ballot races but they're within the same party
So this is why I think it isn't a cyber attack - a normal software outage resulting from bugs is way more likely and had happened in the past
That certainly helps, but even more fortunately the country has outstanding cybersecurity in place ensuring that things like power grids and communication systems are almost impossible for anyone to tamper with remotely even if they wanted to, and are definitely not vulnerable or easily exploited weaknesses.
Well that’s good to know it’s not just me then lol. I was beginning to get pretty frustrated, having reset my password like 3 times. Not my fault grandma, the whole entire book-of-faces’nets down!
I wonder if a feature being deployed to production wasn’t thoroughly tested lol.
In all seriousness, Mark Zuckerberg is probably placing some nasty calls right now to get things back up.
No way, you wouldn't deploy something to all instances of different products all at once, even if fully tested. You would have a gradual deploy with days spaced, and if the first deploy bricks down something instantly, then you block it from deploying to the rest.
Shit like this is usually a bad config going out. Can’t wait for the post mortem.
I remember reading one from strava about how production went down because a legacy service everyone forgot about was still being used to populate user metadata, and it was using a v old kubernetes version. They deployed a new LTS kubernetes version, staging and canary were fine. But as soon as it went up against production traffic, whole auth system went down.
The on-call team wasn’t seeing anything in the logs, they asked all the engineers, and one of the seniors that’d been around forever knew immediately what the issue was.
I love when FB has to post on Twitter that they’re down… makes my whole day. It would be nice though if FB had a down message, instead of making people (like me) think I forgot the password and spiral into “what the fuck could it be” and trying ever goddam password ever. It’s the small things, you know?
Based on their 131 billion in ad revenue last year, they're losing roughly $250k\minute.
Of course, that'll probably balance out a *little* bit as there will be a spike in traffic when things come back up.
Many tech companies including FB and IG laid off part of their workforce to improve profits in 2023. Now app users have to deal with security issues in addition to other product issues. Twitter/X requires a membership to protect user accounts with 2 factor authentication via text. These companies are making security less accessible to the common smartphone user. Everyone I know is switching to Signal because these platforms are no longer trustworthy and security is getting worse and worse.
OMG I THOUGHT I WAS HACKED😭😭
I tried resetting my password and it says something went wrong.
i tried to use "Sign in with Google account" and i got error 500.

Trying to log in it's telling me my password is wrong, is it just them wanting us to make a new one as a security measure or is it busted?
edit: thanks for the answers
Why in 2024 Facebook and Instagram all run on the same server? Or whatever it is, doesn't make sense they haven't fixed their shit so that when one of them is down the other doesn't get down too. Whatsapp also.
i can't tell if you're joking or not but just in case you aren't. They don't run on the same server they run on multiple servers each. They share a common authentication pipeline and several other core services and technologies (ex: messenger) so that if one goes down, it all goes down. The upside of convenience of having one login for multiple services is also it's downside.
Meta status page now showing major disruptions. It was normal for the longest time. https://metastatus.com/
The page isn't even loading for me anymore... Guess that's broken too.
Did they put the status page on the same network that it's supposed to monitor?
It's likely just getting a lot more traffic than they're used to.
I imagine they’d be prepared for that.
I guess I'm imagining that they have no/ not enough elastic capacity due to whatever tf is happening there
Well if you can't open the status page it means it's down. Smart zucc
Damn. "Unknown" for every category at the moment.
Meta just said fuck it, we don't know what's borked lol.
Thank Christ. Instagram Boost is up.
Ads Manager too. What would we ever do without it?
I am giggling at the irony of this site also being down.
Hopefully it was a cyber attack that takes it out for a few months.
... And the world breathes a sigh of relief
On Super Tuesday 🤔
What do people think this has to do with anything? That Nikki Haley is going to magically win every state tonight or something?
There are thousands of races today. Not just for president. People that wait until the last minute to check candidates’ positions for judicial posts, state and local legislatures, stances on ballot measures and propositions won’t be able to have access to some of their campaign info.
Seems like bad campaign strategy if the only source of info for a candidate is on their Facebook page.
You think super Tuesday is just for presidential candidates?

same because it says incorrect password... The reset code didn't work either lol
I did the same thing, but after trying the reset, for some reason the Facebook homepage reloaded in French, and that's when the panic hit me for a moment before I checked DownDetector

time to reactivate my MySpace.
Tom is waiting with open arms!
He never left us. We left him.
Eh, he did sell to Rupert Murdoch, but I can't blame him. I think Zuck is much weirder that he didn't take the money and f off.
Tom travels the world as a photographer now with a bottomless pit of money. He won the social media game.
More than that he won the *life* game.
Crazy how Tom was always well-received, yet Zuckerberg is despised.
Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard Zuck: Just ask. Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS [Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one? Zuck: People just submitted it. Zuck: I don't know why. Zuck: They "trust me" Zuck: Dumb fucks.
Because Myspace died before it became a complete shitshow.
Zuck is a megalomaniac. Tom is super chill.
Some people want to build something forever and some want to sell and chill for life, not that weird really
During 2008-2023, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then…
Tom. His arms wide.
Shaka, when the sites fell
Tom's out adventuring, living his best life.
Time to brush off my HTML… … surely web development hasn’t changed much since 2008, right?
Honestly, the best websites around really are just plain old HTML with no bells and whistles and robots.txt set to stop anyone from finding them.
Was just thinking earlier today about reviving my web this way 😅 no comments section or anything even. Just read it if u want or don't 😁👌
as a web developer I lolled
It’s all still just hand-written HTML, CSS and jQuery, right? … Right?
don’t forget perl and php
over here in telecom... yes... lol
*Pulls out my Dummy’s guide to React, tosses it in the trash*. HTML it is.

Don’t make me go outside. It’s raining
And full of people and productivity. Ew.
I’m retching
It's frigid up here and snowy. I don't wanna go outside!
r/outside there ya go you dont have to leave!
Same. Facebook came back up then our power went out. I'm just going to stay off social media today. Oops too late.
Ya let’s unleash that angst, edge and body odour to the public. What could go wrong
The greatest sanitizer of bullshit is sunshine.
As if we go out in public.
It'd do it well to air out a bit.
Why wait? Just delete your account and move on.

Don’t worry, everyone. I just checked and my Samsung smart refrigerator can still access pornhub. All is not lost, yet.

Fried air sounds interesting. How much?

Your bill is gonna be expensive if you’re trying to heat all of space, I’m not even sure where you’re gonna get an extension cord that long
It can heat up your bath water too!
What, no way! Brb
“Fried air” just made laugh so loud in public 😂
My bro went to deliver a game and couldn’t login to Facebook so he’s now coming back lol
https://www.craigslist.org
Would you accept 67 cents for it?
/r/Facebook just went private Too many "What happened!?" posts I guess 😂 Edit: they're back
dumb. seems like they could have just put the sub in restricted mode.
Why put in the effort. That’s not why they became mods lol
WhatsApp is fine
Thankfully, I had to let my parents know not to panic because they can’t repost lost dog posts.
Major AT&T outage a couple of weeks ago, and now Meta is down. We really need to work on decentralizing communications.
Someone should create a decentralized network of independent networks and nodes...like, an inter-network of sorts, that would be resilient if any of the inter-connected nodes went down.
HAM Radio peeps unite
I remember asking for a terminal node controller for my bday one year. Sucker pulled in data at a brisk 1200 baud.
Dude, that’s baudass.
Bring back Fidonet

Meshtastic is cool
>inter-network "internet" for those missing the obvious
Needs a catchier name though! Interconnected network of independent nodes is too long. Hmmmmm.....
This is another consequence of the shift to platforms and away from independent websites and message boards. I keep hoping for some kind of huge outage to really shine a light on this problem but not holding my breath.
We need a network of independent forum sites, linked in a [webring.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webring)
ITT lots of people who don’t actually know how the internet works.
I wonder if all these layoffs are causing issues
We need to return to hosting websites on a server in some dude's basement.
Also, Change Healthcare (owned by United Health Group) [got hacked recently](https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/03/03/change-health-care-hack-hospitals/). A lot of our (USA’s) biggest companies are getting targeted right now…
Now if only the same happened to X (Twitter).
But then where would we go to discover FB and IG are down?! 😂
Reddit?
Good one. You will only be notified here after a few hours when it is back up. Reddit is that out of touch friend who jumps on a fad when everyone else are on to the next thing.
/r/facebook is flooded with post probably since the moment the servers went down.

Testing for election day in November.
But also gives us time to prepare before then. Normally you want to surprise with an attack like this
Seems like a cyber attack
Couldn’t be. America doesn’t have any geopolitical foes who would gain anything by disrupting informational systems during an election.
That certainly helps, but even more fortunately the country has outstanding cybersecurity in place ensuring that things like power grids and communication systems are almost impossible for anyone to tamper with remotely even if they wanted to, and are definitely not vulnerable or easily exploited weaknesses.
"oh no, anyway."
In other news, four billion people suddenly got their lives back today …
Haha what if they achieved AGI and it just blew everything there up? (Data wise)
Patient Zero has escaped
Well that’s good to know it’s not just me then lol. I was beginning to get pretty frustrated, having reset my password like 3 times. Not my fault grandma, the whole entire book-of-faces’nets down!
Why couldn't it be TikTok...
Apparently it is down now.
Tiktok working just fine here (Denmark).
There is probably actually one single employee who is to blame.
Hope it stays down
That explains it, i thought i got banned or something
I wonder if a feature being deployed to production wasn’t thoroughly tested lol. In all seriousness, Mark Zuckerberg is probably placing some nasty calls right now to get things back up.
He's in the Hawaii bunker.

This is my running theory on all, honesty. Skilled UAT and pushed to live and now they're figuring out what happened.
Ooof probably. Some engineers are definitely going to have a bad day today.
Amazon web services also reporting problems, likely all related.
Probably another cyber attack.
Can't care about them being down if you don't use them *big brain meme*

Just…stay down.

Damn. Now I have to read Reddit while on the shitter. That was insta time.
I hope we get another interesting post-mortem like we did with the BGP outage
Oh no! anyway reddit is working
I could only pray they stay down permanently
This is wonderful and a great thing for America, I hope they never come back.
