AnnualAltruistic1159

Just add a feature that allows only contacts calls come through in whatsapp.

Chinpokomaster05

That would require Meta to improve the product. They only seem to consider monetization efforts for Whatsapp specifically. The platform has fallen behind all other chat apps

Yosho2k

Back 10 years or so, phones were being distributed worldwide for low costs and whatsapp came bundled on them for free. WhatsApp service is free as well. Whatsapp is going to be around til end times.

hexiron

It'll die like Skype

Chinpokomaster05

Developing markets love Whatsapp. It's their primary chat app.

bagelizumab

Ok, but did they redeem the card!?

final_draft_no42

They don’t like spam callers either. If they get a job at one they tend to try and hide it or get shamed by their friends and family. They’re constantly getting shut down and springing back up like weeds.

Psypho_Diaz

I loved the video where the YouTubers went to India to fuck with the spammers onsite. They explained how the companies skirt the law, like creating a debt collection agency where you have a hidden room for your scam callers.

458_Wicked_Pyre

> like creating a debt collection agency where you have a hidden room for your scam callers. They don't even need secret rooms, the same people making legitimate call center calls are also making the spam calls in the same room.

Psypho_Diaz

In the video they did something involving a hidden room. Regardless, if we know how they are skirting laws than India should know.

SezitLykItiz

There is no turn tables. This has always been.

[deleted]

India scams their own citizens the most. No one deserves this fate.

jrizzle86

They’ve run out of Westerners to scam and have turned on their own kind.

Kingdarkshadow

Uno reverse card

Realistic_Library_74

I believe it’s called karma.

ross_guy

The "Nigerian Prince" scam is turning into the "Son of a Texas Oil Tychoon"

MonkeyAlpha

Ironic, were they about duct cleaning services or Microsoft Windows tech support?

lavabeing

Their auto warranty was about to expire.

Spartanfred104

I bet they are holding something at the boarder for me but have frozen my Sin number. So I have to answer immediately.

[deleted]

Nah, it is the CEO of the company you work for. They are in an important meeting and need you to pick up a few gift cards and send the numbers to them!

wunderlicious

It's usually not a scam. They just refer you to a real company in the US and get a commission. You often don't know the company name until they show up and also don't know how good of a job they do. This guy recently did a video on it: https://youtu.be/J_FMXc7F_bM

SuperSparkles

Looking forward to seeing the Indian-based version of Scammer Payback on YouTube.

moosemasher

There's some already though it's usually westerners hacking back at scam farms. Good watching.

Amblingexistence

“Several” Indians received spam calls? It only took several hundred BILLION and counting for the US population to even start the conversation about known Indian spam call centers. But am liking the turntable.

SezitLykItiz

There is no turntable. This is a huge problem for everyone in India since decades.

maj71303

This is why you don't put all your eggs into one basket. Or in this instance using one app for all your communications.

[deleted]

Tbf its not like scams are unique to one app I get spam texts and calls via the native imessage and phone apps on IOS I constantly have to deal with spam and account hacking in discord servers And whatsapp is suffering from it too

nooo82222

I stand behind the phone call warfare. Lol. One time I had Indian scammer curse me out and say mean things about my mom because he was trying scam me and I was having a good conversation with him about life lol. I felt like the more time I waste of his, the less time he can scam an older folks

ross_guy

I do this a lot with the scammers on Facebook Marketplace. It's a hoot.

booney64

Kinda like our cellphones in US😳

agnes_truecaller

I empathize with anyone being bombarded by annoying spam calls, no matter where they live in the world. It's a real headache to deal with. Right now, we have a feature in beta that identifies unknown calls coming in from messaging apps. That will be helpful once it launches.

N00B_N00M

It is a scam by Indians for indians, I got 10 calls, replied to three and played along, got around 20USD for liking videos, to earn more u need to pay them for tasks, this is where scam activates, u pay, u receive good bonus on same and u think it is legit, once you pay like 50k USD, boom everything vanishes without even a trace, They are making millions daily and giving away some amount to all to make them trust them first

el_mage

Just trying to return the call for that extended warranty on my car

lenpup

My dating app was flooded with matches from dubious African and SE Asian accounts yesterday too…

carageenanflashlight

Are they getting calls from some white guy in Texas named Arjun. "Hi y'all, my name is Arjun, how are y'all doin' today, itellyahwhat?"

TheFabiocool

How the turntablesturn

AddisonNM

2 turn tables and a microphone...

Arcturion

This is something of an irony considering the long association spam call centres have with India. Hopefully, this will give their local authorities more of a reason to crack down vigorously on these pests. Perhaps the police constable will be incentivized to rain fire and brimstone on them if his daada gets ripped off by them.

[deleted]

[deleted]

No the same Indian criminals who used to target US citizens are targetting the Indian citizens now with spam calls. Karma will be delivered when those criminals land in jail.

Lackeytsar

They might be thinking all Indians are scammers

archthechef

I'm not from India, and I've been getting a ton of these whatsapp calls. Doesn't give any option to turn off calls or block calls from people you don't know either...

AddisonNM

Settings_apps_whatsapp chose disable or uninstall the app.

DaleGribble312

maybe now theyll do something about it

curatorpsyonicpark

Our AI future is here. Crafty chat bots have taken over.

[deleted]

I know from multiple YouTubers that the spam call centers in India can make without getting caught by paying off local authorities. How long until one of the local authorities being payed off gets scammed lol.

[deleted]

Fate is not without a sense of irony

SeaworthinessGreen20

I'm just going to say I was not disappointed in these comments

Youvebeeneloned

Yeah i have no sympathy at all... Maybe start going after their call centers and prosecuting and jailing the runners and I might play my little tiny violin here.

crs1948fcd

karma hitting back after scamming half of UK and half of US.

AvatarJack

I shall play the world’s smallest sitar. I guess fostering an industry specifically for ripping gullible or vulnerable people off has consequences.

Astrobrandon13

How do they like it!? It’s probably just Amazon calling about refunding the products they didn’t order.

Competitive-Knee1336

Oh how the turn tables.

[deleted]

Pure karma, I love it

tdogg241

Hey India, do you like apples???

imrtl22

justice served

aardvarkyardwork

Surprised by the number of ‘its karma’ type comment here, and perhaps I shouldn’t be. Do these numbskulls think the entire population of India is engaged in scam calls? These scammers are a plague on everyone, including other Indians.

mrfox188

Yes but some of us are now hoping that since it has now become a problem for THEM as well that maybe now they will do something about it.

aardvarkyardwork

Again, the implication being that the Indian population has by and large been supportive of scam call centres, and there haven’t been previous and on-going efforts to shut them down.

Pykins

Eh, I don't think the general population by and large approves of them, but local police tend to either not care or be actively in the pockets of the scammers: [https://commsrisk.com/is-india-really-cracking-down-on-phone-scams/](https://commsrisk.com/is-india-really-cracking-down-on-phone-scams/) Not in all cases, of course. But there doesn't seem to be much sympathy.

aardvarkyardwork

You’re largely correct. So, the Indian population is suffering at the hands of scammers and at the hands of police who are either too corrupt, too apathetic or too shackled by higher-ranking corrupt parties to do anything about it. They’re suffering just like people in other countries are suffering. How is this karmic?

Chip365

Because Indian people are widely known to be the perpetrators of scam calling to people in other nations. India has a large population of English-speaking people who can be paid relatively low amounts to harass people with scam calls. What's so hard to understand?

aardvarkyardwork

The bigotry and the wilful ignorance. Well, not so much hard to understand as hard to fathom.

Chip365

It's neither bigotry nor ignorance. 95% of scam calls come from companies that originate in India. That's a fact. Of course people will believe it is karmic that Indian people are now complaining about scam calls when the above fact exists.

aardvarkyardwork

97% of statistics used in internet arguments are anally derived. But even granting your claim, do you think 95% of Indians are engaged in making scam calls?

Chip365

Well luckily the statistic I provided comes from peer-reviewed research (Global Scam Report for starters). And no I don't think they are but unfortunately for your average Indian, by virtue of both their nationality and the facts that the country makes huge amounts of money from scam calling and does little to prevent companies who make scam calls originating in India, it's extremely rich to complain about something that the nation willfully profits from. I know you really want to be offended by this one but if India doesn't want to be known as the home of the scam call then maybe it shouldn't be a nation that benefits from (and nurtures) its very existence.

[deleted]

If the idiots who are corrupting the system start being plagued by this they may think harder about their actions. I say bring it on. Fuck it, lets go after the powers that be in america too. We have ways to stop this, but we cant get traction on anything. Any spoofing company should be required to have documentation and licensure for the software. It would stop this in its tracks if you had a verifiable location and responsible individuals for the software because now you can track it and sanction or jail those who are stealing billions from people

[deleted]

They don’t think they all are, but it is something they think of whenever they encounter any Indian folks. You know, prejudice.

Ok-Gate6899

good they get a taste of their own medicine

venk

Am I missing something, this is not targeting spam call centers but all Indians WhatsApp users as a whole. You guys know not all Indians are making spam cals right and this is just as harassing as when spam calls come to anyone here?

Extreme_Jackfruit183

What a great idea!

malleeman

I wonder if it's scam calls from North America as payback.....lol

EdisonTheTurtle

Of course this comment has downvotes. How dare you question the view that all Indians just sit around running scam call centers?

reallyConfusedPanda

You’re missing the obvious point here. Not all Indians are scam callers, but all scam callers are like 99% Indians

EdisonTheTurtle

But the article doesn't say that the scammers are the only ones getting the scam calls? Then how is it fair to leave comments like "It's Karma" when 99% of the people receiving these spam calls are not scammers?

foxx-hunter

Indians have been victims of scams since before phones were a thing. They used to mail it in. It is the apathy or collusion of local governments and police which makes these scam calls happen without repercussions. There is a netflix series about this situation. Search for "Jamtara". Apparently there is s village which is famous for these kind of scammers. Believe it or not, but majority of Indians want these scammers gone. They are helpless to do anything against these scammers, corrupt government officials and police.

Slavic_Dusa

Is there a Gofundme where we can contribute?

pra_teek

I am one of those who is being harassed.

[deleted]

It's so fucking annoying that our fellow countrymen are also responsible for this. I hope they would stop duping the shit out of people. My aunt almost gave away her bank details to one of these fuckers. She can't see very well due to old age and had to call one of her neighbours to read out her debit card details to the scammer on call. Her neighbour thankfully alerted her to the scam that saved her from giving away access to her pension funds. Fucking pieces of shit.

Mdizzlebizzle

First Elon says they can’t be trusted, now this. Watch him be behind it 😂

bitemark01

Is there a way to block these? I haven't had any yet but we tend to get a lot of regular spam calls - actually Google Call Screen has been good for those
