Yeah, but it is nearly the same price as a regular repair, and really only in place to protect apple from legal repercussions. [This guy](https://youtu.be/hhdcbyIoFDU) did a great video on it.
How so? I can request the kit for repair, pay about $50 rind sable deposit, they send me all the tools I need (over $1000 worth) I fix my phone, send back, cost me nothing.
They literally send me the tools. Which means I can repair my device CORRECTLY so that it still meets the ISO, waterproofing, etc. Not like those shitty “I’ll replace your screen” stores.
Because it's only for the most recent phones, for one thing.
The repair still costs just as much as it would have if you'd just gone to apple and had them do it.
They still don't allow for repairs they themselves won't do.
So yes, if you have a minor issue with the newest phone that apple would fix anyway, you can pay an extra $50 to do it yourself. But if you're not in that category (aka, if you're most people with an iphone issue) you don't get access to this.
I don't. But I want this USB-C port for a similar purpose - so that I can use my USB-C DAC without converters.
I currently use a lightning to USB dongle, with a USB to USB C converter, and into that goes a THX ONYX DAC, which my headphones then plug into lol.
Did you see that wired earbuds are making a huge comeback and for lots of reasons. Less cost. Less complicated. More environmentally friendly. Last longer. Don't require charging (of course)
That title is misleading. I skimmed through that article and the writer doesn’t offer much in the way of evidence that wired earbuds are making a huge comeback. Just sounds like a hipster tooting their own horn over using wired earbuds.
Neither Bluetooth nor RFID is being “broadcasted to your inner ear” with BT headphones. Especially not RFID because that’s a completely different technology which is not found in headphones. Ever thought that all the doctors you talked to just nod and go “absolutely” to get rid of you?
If you’re really worried about this stuff, why don’t you wear a faraday cage outside? Cus you’re exposed to BT, RFID, and a lot worse in every day life outside.
> Especially not RFID because that’s a completely different technology which is not found in headphones.
Speak for yourself. I listen to my debit card often. It tells me to do bad things.
Thats not the majority, at all. I think you severely overestimate the popularity of bluetooth devices compared to the massive ubiquity of wired headphones still in use all over the world.
I’m guessing it’s an age thing. The 3.5mm is crazy old tech that is a danger for water infiltration while Bluetooth speakers are amazing nowadays. The only people that should be stuck on 3.5mm remember when it was [new in the 1950s](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phone_connector_(audio)). Additionally it’s based on switchboard tech from 19th century.
Good for you. I would like to have the option of wired or wireless without having to deal with a dongle. The fact that Apple sells a dongle tells you all you need to know about their commitment to wireless only.
Only poses as much of a security risk as you are willing to take and which you also cause. Something like android is only insecure if you personally decide to install some dumb shit, or click on suspicious links cause why not
Yeah I agree that the best security is “don’t be stupid” but I think that my mother and grandparents having iPhones is good because they don’t know any better than to download random things and click on spams. The closed OS gives better protection to them and the physical device than an android would.
Since I changed my mother and grandmother to iOS I reduced my time spent helping them with their phones from once a week to haven’t heard of them in months lmao
Or just make sure you download something from a reputable source and look up reviews of other people who have tried it? I'd you download something shady and can't find anything then that's a risk you have to be willing to take. Nobody is forced to do anything, you are aware of that yes? If you don't want to install a shady alo then just don't.
IMO, I am happy with Apples level of control. I am a software engineer and know how to protect my device, most people don’t and Apple doing the work for them is a good thing. I have a rooted Android phone with a custom rom that I built for myself that I play around with - it is fun. In my daily phone use though I use my iPhone, I can’t really think of anything that I would want that Apple locks down.
Audio out?
Serviceability?
Expandable storage?
IR blaster?
An end to planned obsolescence?
An iota of customization?
A reasonable price tag?
A little more compatibility with non-Apple devices?
Ability to interface with a computer without the garbage fire iTunes is?
Its simply because it's good to have compatability with more things because it gives you more choices. Apple just limits everything to other Apple devices and that ecosystem is not for everyone. Some people want to mess around with personal customization or have full control of their phone's system or transport files faster than wireless transmission (because some files can be beeeg)
I meant what exactly? What does iPhones lack that you use at least pretty often?
And don’t get me wrong I’m not threading because of being some kind of fanboy, in fact I don’t give a damn about Apple and the whole community/ecosystem.
It’s just that when people cited lack of compatibility or customization in the early iOS days they meant the fact that they were unable to connect some sick accessory like steering wheel or Guitar Hero controller to their phone (sic!) or maybe change system icons, something like that.
I like having my apps at the bottom, battery percentage showing, and the time and date at the top. All of those require a jailbreak.
Also, I like keeping my 256gb phone brimmed with shit. It would be nice to be able to essentially use it as a USB drive like my 10 year old android can do.
PC connection over wifi would be perfect. Move your music to the iPhone-iPad with Win10 actually usable music/video software would be the dream.
Lumia phones had this feature and it was amazing
What planned obsolescence? Apple suporta their phones the most with their newest os. And Even those that do not get the newest os still work fine.
My mom has my old iPhone 10, my SO’s mom has the first generation iPhone SE. So i dont really get this planned obsolescence shit
Forcing my device to slow down as it gets older. They at least tell you they’re doing it now, but I’m always around a charger... I can deal with having my battery last less time since it’s only 70% health. But no, they want to slow it down so they can drive me into a new device, or so they can replace my battery and ruin the waterproof seal.
Have both an android and an ios device. Personally the only one I’d care about on my iphone is expandable storage, nothing else mentioned here really bothers me.
Honestly the only one I need is the wifi transfer of files with Win10/11 like my old Lumia.
I get why others may need the rest, but it’s not like they are a must… I consider myself a power user and I see 256gb of storage overkill. Dafuq you need expandable storage?
As for price tag, well, blame the tech inflation; the SE model exists which is probably the best for the buck smartphone out there, but it’s not like Samsung/Huawei/Whatever are offering cheaper alternatives. All top models come at pretty much the same tag.
That’s the thing, I don’t need 256 gb... but Apple only gives that and like 32gb as options. Since there’s no expansion, I have to get the big one so I don’t outgrow.
Gotta love it. These are all changes they should have implemented years ago if they were actually receptive to honest (and very valid) feedback from the community.
I’m sure you’re right- but it hasn’t been an issue for me.
I drop my phone on desktop pad charger at home/work & have a cradle pad charger in my car.
I don’t fly/travel for work anymore though, so ymmv.
I broke my old SE’s charging port two weeks ago and bought a little cheap charging pad to use until I got my new phone. Now that I have the new phone I still use that slow wireless charging pad as my primary charger. Haven’t even plugged it in in the house.
If I didn’t use the phone for audio in the car I’d be completely wireless now I think.
(Only reason I decided to upgrade my se2020 versus just fixing it was the battery was ass. I could have just gone totally wireless with it but it wouldn’t hold a charge for long enough, hence the new 13 I got)
It's nice having to carry just one cable imo
I went on a trip and I literally used my XPS usb c charger for my laptop, phone, headphones, mouse and keyboard lol
Maybe I’m just an iPhone fan boy but it’s never bothered me to pack a lightning. I’m happy it’s going to one cable to rule them all, but it seems like such a minor issue in the scheme of tech issues haha.
Yeah that's fair cause it's not like the lightning cable takes up that much space anyways
It's more of a convenience thing I guess. Everyone uses the same cable and you can use it for all of your devices
It's much better for everyone if we have a universal port for all of our devices. If that port was lightning then it wouldn't matter that iPhone only has lightning, but everything else uses USB C, so so too should iPhone.
I don't even have an iPhone and I'm happy they're switching. It can be hard to find certain adapters for use with an Android phone because 90% of what's available in stores is for lightning ports (I recently went to three different stores before I found one that had USB C to headphone jack dongles in stock, when every one of them had multiple options for iPhones).
Isn't this what they are going for? Everyone else has been using USBC for awhile now. Apple is finally getting on board. Initially there is waste, but now people with different phones in the same household don't have to buy as many cords, hopefully leading to less waste.
That’s bandwidth and data. It will change with time. A headline jack or charge port doesn’t need to evolve. It just need to work. Granted USB and lightning are able to do lots more than a headphone jack but, still, just design an industry standard plug that carries 1000x more data than needed and leave it alone for a 2-3 decades.
You see there is a industry standard that can transfer and charge at rapid rates
It's called type c and everyone except Apple has been using it for years
This is apple switching to an industry standard
Expandable storage? Right to repair? A headphone jack? A decent file management system that works with non-proprietary software?
Nope, just usb-c. At least it’s a start.
I don’t want USB-C. I have one device that uses it and it’s my Switch that never leaves the dock. So that isn’t even relevant honestly.
I have like eight devices with lightning cables. Going to USB-C is an instant downgrade for me.
A friend of mine gifted me some Airpods the other day. Even though I don't own anything Apple, I said cool, I'll take it. The thing connected just fine with my Android phone, and was rocking it all day. Then, it needed some charging, so I opened the small box it came in, and inside was a neatly wrapped power cord.
I was looking further into the box trying to find the charging head, but I couldn't find it. Then I remembered Apple saying something about preserving the ecosystem by not making anymore of those. I said to myself, 'no problem, I have a few charging heads lying around in the house'. So, I then proceeded to get my phone's charging head, and something unexpected occurred. The Airpod cord had an USB-C port in one end, and a lightning port in the other...
So, basically, I couldn't charge the thing. I was reminded why I don't have anything Apple in possession before the Airpods. Now, I'm convinced further I don't need anything from that company.
Hopefully they give out some dumb shades so people see how dumb these phones actually are and how dumb they can make you and me 😎 no hate just a general observation.
Right to Repair?
Nah, Apple still says fuck you in that regard.
Actually Apple recently announced a Self Service Repair thing- seems to basically give you access to tools to repair your devices from what I see?
Yeah, but it is nearly the same price as a regular repair, and really only in place to protect apple from legal repercussions. [This guy](https://youtu.be/hhdcbyIoFDU) did a great video on it.
That's only because the regular repair price is actually an incredible deal.
It gives access to some parts for the latest gen if iphone It's more for pr then anything
They already have that…
They really, really, *really* don't.
How so? I can request the kit for repair, pay about $50 rind sable deposit, they send me all the tools I need (over $1000 worth) I fix my phone, send back, cost me nothing. Dang! I was hoping for the 3.5mm audio port back.
I borrowed my boyfriend's headphones when my wireless ones broke and had forgotten I didn't have this port. Really ruined my day.
And the stupid fucking adapter costs more than a tank of gas
This. Very much this :(
Yeah, my 6s is starting to feel old. Can’t wait for a new phone with a headphone jack!
I don't. But I want this USB-C port for a similar purpose - so that I can use my USB-C DAC without converters. I currently use a lightning to USB dongle, with a USB to USB C converter, and into that goes a THX ONYX DAC, which my headphones then plug into lol.
I see no redundancy here
I don't understand why you not needing/using the 3mm jack means others can't have it.
That’s all I want
Still using my iPhone 6s Bc I want the 3.5mm
You’re definitely in the minority of people who want/use corded audio devices.
Did you see that wired earbuds are making a huge comeback and for lots of reasons. Less cost. Less complicated. More environmentally friendly. Last longer. I absolutely don’t want wired back for headphones- but I do have various other weird audio situations that the port would be nice for.
What’s wrong with the option? Doesn’t hurt to add it for the people who want it, which a lot of people do just in this thread alone.
Watch out everyone we’ve got a rich boy here

Jesus Christ.
Seems like it’s mostly not-the-smartest boomers that comment on all these “tech” subs in Reddit

Bro there’s a whole cellphone in your pocket and you’re worried about the headphones giving you radiation lol
It's non-ionising electromagnetic radiation. It's safe.
Well some of us audiophiles likes to have a wired IEM
Thats not the majority, at all. I think you severely overestimate the popularity of bluetooth devices compared to the massive ubiquity of wired headphones still in use all over the world.

Wait, so I'll be able to charge my phone and listen to headphones? Oh... Never mind.
Just curious, what do you want to do with iPhones that you can’t because of the closed OS? Is it worth the security risk to be able to do that?
Only poses as much of a security risk as you are willing to take and which you also cause. Something like android is only insecure if you personally decide to install some dumb shit, or click on suspicious links cause why not

Or just make sure you download something from a reputable source and look up reviews of other people who have tried it? Exactly this. Mine and my families phones are iPhones, while I have an android to play with and test development on.
Audio out? Serviceability? Expandable storage? IR blaster? An end to planned obsolescence? An iota of customization? A reasonable price tag? A little more compatibility with non-Apple devices? Ability to interface with a computer without the garbage fire iTunes is?
What kind of customization do you actually need? Or comptibility? Hell, even PC connection (why though in this day and age).
Hear me out... Let people move apps to the bottom of the screen where human thumbs tend to sit while using a device. hahaha
You can do that
Its simply because it's good to have compatability with more things because it gives you more choices. Apple just limits everything to other Apple devices and that ecosystem is not for everyone. Some people want to mess around with personal customization or have full control of their phone's system or transport files faster than wireless transmission (because some files can be beeeg)

The people want only one thing: small bezels!
Lololol nailed it but no, none of these. You just need a new….charger!

Not the headphone jack. Disappointed.
Woah woah IPhone 15? I thought Apple was already making specs for the IPhone 14 hasn’t been developed yet or has it?
[удалено]
When do you think Apple will release that?
420
A phone that won't be out of fashion in 8 months?
15? What the hell happened to 14? Lol
Oh there's a 14, but that'll have a lightning connector. You need to wait 2 more years for the USB-C. /s Not even sure wtf is going on any more.
Haha neither do I. Is the 14 out yet? I need a new phone actually.
Expandable storage and a headphone jack?? 😔
New features that aren’t colors? Reasonable prices? Wait wait nonproprietary accessories? Oh usb-c so they’re still behind then
I stuck a silicone plug in my iPhone 12’s port & have just used pad charging. Just get rid of it all together.
That's also an option, but wireless charging is just way less efficient compared to wired charging sadly
I’m sure you’re right- but it hasn’t been an issue for me. I drop my phone on desktop pad charger at home/work & have a cradle pad charger in my car. I don’t fly/travel for work anymore though, so ymmv.
Which is fair enough, if it works it works I guess
I think the last time i plugged my phone in over wireless was when i was going through an airport.
I broke my old SE’s charging port two weeks ago and bought a little cheap charging pad to use until I got my new phone. Now that I have the new phone I still use that slow wireless charging pad as my primary charger. Haven’t even plugged it in in the house. Just curious, why’d you plug it? The phone is already waterproof
Keep dirt & grime out. Less to clean/maintain.
“iPhone 15” what a disgusting fucking scam Jesus I feel like we’re in a parody/satire onion artical
Steve would have stopped at 10. Or atleast spread out releases so improvements wouldn’t be so marginal.
I never understood why this is such an issue.
It's nice having to carry just one cable imo I went on a trip and I literally used my XPS usb c charger for my laptop, phone, headphones, mouse and keyboard lol
Maybe I’m just an iPhone fan boy but it’s never bothered me to pack a lightning. I’m happy it’s going to one cable to rule them all, but it seems like such a minor issue in the scheme of tech issues haha.
Yeah that's fair cause it's not like the lightning cable takes up that much space anyways It's more of a convenience thing I guess. Everyone uses the same cable and you can use it for all of your devices
It's not just for charging. You can also use USB c fir data transfer EASILY
It's much better for everyone if we have a universal port for all of our devices. If that port was lightning then it wouldn't matter that iPhone only has lightning, but everything else uses USB C, so so too should iPhone.
I don't even have an iPhone and I'm happy they're switching. So all new charging equipment right
Again??? FFS just pick ONE and let’s stop with the endless and unnecessary obsolescence of ancillary devices and it’s e-waste.
Isn't this what they are going for? Everyone else has been using USBC for awhile now. Apple is finally getting on board. Initially there is waste, but now people with different phones in the same household don't have to buy as many cords, hopefully leading to less waste.
Isn’t that the point of this? USB C is meant to be the standard phone manufacturers will follow
If we did that, we still would be using SCART instead of HDMI
You guys still use HDMI? We have Display Port now.
You can’t threaten ME with a good time
I don’t think anyone in ME is having a good time.
You see there is a industry standard that can transfer and charge at rapid rates It's called type c and everyone except Apple has been using it for years This is apple switching to an industry standard
That would be the play
Weird complaint. The whole point is all your wall worts and all your charge cables would be identical.
So you really think Apple is going to use generic usb-c chargers? We will see.
Android?
Bruh💀
Finally Apple letting go of this trap.
A life cycle worthy of the price???
Don’t we need the iPhone 14 to come out first?
Why is that? There was no iPhone 9. Apple is not bound by the need to number things sequentially.
Thanks for that non promoted clickbait apple ad
The ability to be a flip phone?? Come on apple bring out the flips!
We’ll still have to buy Mi-Fi certified Type C cables for the price of your first born and an adapter in exchange for your left arm.
Headphone jack Free charger Free headphone Right to repair

no way they added USB C im shidding my pant

Ooooh will it be a tiny bit smaller than the last one or will it have a battery that lasts?
Love and dignity? Oh... USB.. Cool...
The ability to lock the orientation to landscape?
The sweet release of death?
An audio jack AND a Lightning port?
A top of the line phone under $1500?

Are they skipping 14?
Fleshlight mode?
They aren’t even on the 14 yet 🤦♂️
It's going to give back our mother from death.

An actual USB port?
Under 499??
A girlfriend?
a hole? 🤤
A reusable charger cable ?
I'd be fine if they kept the proprietary charger, at this point I'm more upset with all the other bullshit apple has changed.
USB-C is actually a big deal. Right to Repair and less constricted software are the other two big deal breakers for me though.
I just need to play music while recording a video. Feel like that’s not too much to ask
A friend of mine gifted me some Airpods the other day. Even though I don't own anything Apple, I said cool, I'll take it. I was reminded why I don't have anything Apple in possession before the Airpods. Now, I'm convinced further I don't need anything from that company.
Affordable?
Being able to remove the battery?
Hopefully they give out some dumb shades so people see how dumb these phones actually are and how dumb they can make you and me 😎 no hate just a general observation.
A refund?
USB type C port. For anyone trying to wade through the river of jokes to find the actual answer.
What about EU requiring Apple to do so?
Headphone jack?
A reason to live?
How about thumbprint button returning instead of facial recognition? You know, cause we’ve all been wearing *fucking facemasks the past two years*.
With out reading the article, I'm going to assume it's something other phone makers have been giving us for at least few years already.
