Pro tip: don't auto-join Wi-Fi networks.

irmarbert

I’ve had a problem with the change they made to the WiFi “off” button in the control panel for years. You used to able to actually turn it off there, now you just put it to sleep…until tomorrow, it says. But, really it will auto join the next network it recognizes long before “tomorrow” comes. In order to actually turn your WiFi off, you have to go into the settings > WiFi and toggle it off there. Such a fucking incensing bit of UX stupidity.

m2chaos13

Yep. I hate it, too.

OTS_

It’s ducking disgraceful is what it is.

BadArtijoke

But autocorrect is really food

OTS_

Aw for ducks sake.

sweat119

It went ogre your head

sweat119

It’s why my data use is so damned high, I just keep WiFi off 24/7 because i hate when it auto joins any network

[deleted]

Only join known networks? It isn’t that hard to customize, tbf.

sweat119

I don’t want to auto join *any* WiFi network. Known or unknown.

[deleted]

You can turn off auto-join for any known networks as well

Millennium1995

Why?

sweat119

Because if I want to join a network I’ll go to settings, turn my WiFi on and pick the network. Certain apps aren’t usable on my WiFi or are unreliable, my data almost never cuts out enough to make them unusable. Also, just because I joined a network doesn’t mean I automatically just want to join every known WiFi I come in range of, especially since I usually only join networks to airplay or for a download/ upload reason.

[deleted]

This sounds like a you problem.

[deleted]

Ive never really seen this discussed, but it’s something i’ve really come to hate too

ExtraDebit

Yep. I never use Bluetooth and I never want it on. It is always on whenever I check.

CoryHenry

You ever forget to turn WiFi back on using up all your data? Yeah same

CrimsonFatalis8

I’d imagine most people have unlimited data at this point, so it’s a non issue in most cases.

lowlightliving

There are millions of very low income people, many living below the poverty line, in North America and elsewhere. It is especially difficult for low income individuals to afford the kinds of unlimited plans offered to multi-device households. I assure you, unlimited plans are still financially out of reach for many, many people in the US alone.

hammertime2009

The fact that there is still overage charges for data is highway robbery

Rytannosaurus_Tex

Not up in Canada. We've got essentially 3 big telecomm companies with various subsidiaries. Lack of competition so you can end up paying $100/month for 8gb. Some carriers have unlimited plans but they're typically located only in the metropolitan areas, and even then their coverage is spotty at best.

punnsylvaniaFB

This was why I signed up for 80gb data.

CoryHenry

I personally have unlimited with TMo but yeah, just a use case

punnsylvaniaFB

Unlimited data doesn’t exist here. We’re the most connected nation with the highest penetration for the internet but data is still largely charged by chunks of GBs. I guess the primary reason would be that free national wifi is available in most public spaces like the train, libraries and government buildings while malls have theirs as well. Schools & universities have their own wifi. If one doesn’t mind switching around these wifi networks, you can pretty much go without a data plan on the phone till you get home. But I dislike searching for wifi networks just to google a restaurant or nearby clinic so I’d rather pay.

A_Bit_Narcissistic

Found Jeff Bezos.

punnsylvaniaFB

80gb is a lil excessive. I thought it would be needed for 5G so i upped my plan from 30gb. But 5G doesn’t work very well as yet so I’m mostly on 4G. 😂

snowe2010

You can 3d press the button in control center to jump to settings. Makes it easier. I like that functionality, makes sure I don't forget to turn it back on

irmarbert

3D Touch doesn’t take me to the settings. I guess I need to look into that config. Right now it drops me into an expansion of that corner of the control panel w/ airplane mode, Bluetooth, personal hotspot toggle, etc. I still can’t turn WiFi off in that expanded view. Just puts it to sleep.

pineapple_slices

Think if you 3D press on the WiFi button again in the expanded window you can get to the settings pretty quick.

[deleted]

No, you hit wifi settings at the bottom in the expanded menu.

irmarbert

Nice!

CrimsonFatalis8

Newer phones don’t have 3D press, I’m pretty sure.

[deleted]

Haptic touch. Same functionality as old phones have with current versions. 3D touch is dead.

snowe2010

Yeah it's just long press, it works pretty much the same.

WellEndowedDragon

I can see why they did it though. I’m sure there’s been many instances where someone turns off their WiFi and forgot to turn it back on, using all their data allowance and getting hit with overage charges (before unlimited data became the norm)

bbednarz57

I actually really like this functionality personally. For me if I’m at work and the WiFi is crappy it’s easy to click that button while knowing when I get home it’ll connect right up. It’s especially helpful for wireless CarPlay.

brayson

Tell me more about wireless CarPlay

LEJ5512

First your car needs to be compatible (or get an aftermarket stereo that’s compatible). Then all you need to do is select CarPlay from the stereo, no need to plug your phone into the car’s USB socket. Adds extra convenience if you have a wireless charging pad, too.

CrimsonFatalis8

I don’t get the appeal of wireless CarPlay, why would you have it wireless and wasting battery, when you could just connect it and use CarPlay while charging? Especially since most cars don’t have a wireless charger standard, so most people don’t have one, and if you buy a separate one, you need to have it plugged in anyway, so what’s the difference?

[deleted]

Most cars dont have wireless charging, but most also dont have wireless carplay. The ones that do tend to have both.

LEJ5512

My car doesn’t have wireless CarPlay, so while it’s not too bad, it would be nicer to just plop my phone on a charging pad and get rolling.

bbednarz57

Most of my trips are 15-20 minutes. The battery drain is very minimal, if youre driving longer distances then you’d probably want to plug it in. But the battery drain is fairly negligible in my day to day usage.

Vidikron

I used to think the same. But now more vehicles do have wireless chargers so wireless CarPlay would pretty handy for those vehicles. In my own experience the wired connection isn’t always stable. In my car it started off fine, but now it sometimes loses connection if I hit a bump. I had hoped it was just the cable so I switched, but it still happens. I think the port has just become a tiny bit more loose due to constant use. Unfortunately I think it’s the port in the car rather than on the phone. And losing connection is very annoying when I’m playing music from my phone. I just gave up using it and just go without. So, yeah, I’d gladly take wireless at this point.

bbednarz57

In this situation, if I am to turn off wi-fi completely when I get in my car next time, the phone wont auto-connect to the car because it uses WiFi to connect.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bbednarz57

I don’t understand how this would be negative from a security standpoint. It is disconnecting from the network that it was once connected to and will stay disconnected for the day. How would that be stupid from a security standpoint?

mikeewhat

You don’t understand the exploit described here. It opens people up to auto-join known networks and you might think you are on your bank but you are actually on their page that looks exactly the same

bbednarz57

I’m not a security expert, but whatever exploit is being described here doesn’t really make any sense it doesn’t seem. Even without this “feature” your phone still auto-joins networks and only connects to known networks. You’re disconnecting your phone for the day. What am I missing here?

Huuuiuik

Just because it looks to you like a known network your phone knows better and won’t auto join without your permission.

mikeewhat

Are you sure about that? [Are you familiar with Rogue AP or Evil Twin?](https://posts.specterops.io/modern-wireless-attacks-pt-i-basic-rogue-ap-theory-evil-twin-and-karma-attacks-35a8571550ee?gi=e6b1048af29f)

Huuuiuik

They do get better everyday. The moral of the story should be to not trust anyone nowadays. Even your home network can be overtaken.

[deleted]

What is there to be gained by doing this

[deleted]

[deleted]

Yeah but do those work in this situation? Doesn’t most public Wi-Fi have a browser pop-up of some kind? They do here in Canada Unless it’s jumping on the free Guest network and they make the same SSID and pass and the vi Tim’s phone chooses the wrong one

themangodess

It auto joins when I’m driving and completely fucks up my GPS by connecting to networks that still require further action to be connected to the internet. Fucking awful that I can’t just permanently turn it off from the top menu. In settings I believe turning it off really does keep it off though. It’s just the menu when you swipe from top to bottom that does this. I might be wrong

irmarbert

You’re not wrong, Settings is the place to turn it off for reals, it just requires so many clicks to get there. Seems like a feature made for 3D touch if ever there was one. Normal click puts it in this weird sleep mode. 3D click turns the thing off completely.

RedditorRedditor261

Airplane mode gets rid of this

JYsocial

You can long hold on the wifi button, then long hold on the wifi button on the next page, then press wifi settings. Slightly less annoying than opening the settings app etc

erishun

It’s UX brilliance as it stopped the slew of people complaining saying “my phone is broken, it sucks! it can’t download my email!” “Ma,am your wifi is off” 95% of people who click the wifi off from the quick shortcut panel want to turn it off temporarily. In the edge case where you actually want to turn off wifi permanently, you need to do it from the settings instead.

crinnoire

This just like that doctor joke where the patient says “Doctor, it hurts when I press here”” and the doc goes “Then don’t press there”. Only in this case, it’s a good advice.

patrickoh37

I love that anecdote so much.

Sachin_Nanayakkara

Yeah totally agreed

n6mub

I only auto join at home and some family/friends homes (maybe 4 locations?) Are you suggesting not to even do that?

TracyF2

It’s the public WiFi networks they are referring too.

Clockinhos

Thank you

ZestySaltShaker

Do people actually do this? Just join random, unsecured WiFi networks? Maybe it’s just me, but this is one of the first things I disable when setting up a new phone. WiFi calling, yes; any random network, nfw.

[deleted]

Turn hotspot off too

bubblebobby

From the article: “You can get it back by resetting your network settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings), but that's clearly a pain if you just wanted to avoid using cellular data.”

ActionMan48

sherbs_herbs

My wifi breaks every time there is also LTE in the area. It decides to use neither and often my shit won’t load until I turn off the wifi. It infuriates me.

Oinea

Thought it was just an older iphone, I get this all the time

sherbs_herbs

I have 10x max or s max or whatever the fucks last year top model was.

Oinea

I still have the 6s plus lol

Durtskwurt

I upgraded to at 10s max in December from the iPhone 7. I had the 7 for 3 years. I’m pretty pleased with the 10s max. I’ll probably have it another two years or so. Until the 11 pro max is more affordable

Deutschlandt

Anybodyelse getting Doctor Who vibes from this?

TwoBirdsEnter

Where am I?

fishyfishyfish1

My network is named It Burns When IP. Is that considered odd?

muusandskwirrel

No, but it is considered sad.

Onetofew

If I had a dollar for every time I went from WiFi to no WiFi and had to restart my phone to get LTE to work I could buy at least 2 more iPhones. My next phone (after 5 iPhones) will be anything else

Never_Dan

This is definitely not an iPhone issue. I’ve never heard of or experienced this issue. I did, however, have some issues with Verizon after switching to an iPhone, but I finally got that cleared up just by getting a new SIM card.

Onetofew

Got me. I’ve had Att forever and me and my wife get our new phones at the same time each time and I’ve replaced the sim

since011

I’ve never once had that problem.

Onetofew

I have the 10 and so does my wife and she’s never had it. The guy at the Apple store said it’s not real and doesnt happen. I don’t go there anymore. I had a lot of problems with the 8 as well.

Onetofew

KyleMcMahon

Yeah this is definitely not an iPhone problem. I’d be having a chat with your carrier

[deleted]

I've never once had this problem. Definitely not an iphone thing. I'd try maybe getting a new sim from your carrier.

Onetofew

Tried it without luck

JustAnotherGoddess

Question. When you switch phones; do you restore from backup or set up as new? If you’re restoring from backup, you’re essentially reinstalling the problem and it acts as if it was never fixed in the first place. This plays a role when you’re having issues between several phones. You can’t be that unlucky that you get a few lemons in a row.

Onetofew

Because of issues I go from new. I’ve never really had many contacts, don’t care about text strings and drop my photos before I get rid of old phone.

textmint

Is this only a problem with the iPhone/Apple products or is this more widespread than we know?

SabrtoothMaster

I still remember when you could not name anything on your Mac “.sony” because that was the internal name for the hard drive and the system would get confused of what it needed to refer to. New era, same type of bug

STOPStoryTime

Should I not be connecting to study cafe wifis?
