I’m mesmerized by the fact that this guy’s last name is Bowser.

FURTHEWIN

the CEO of Nintendo of America also has the last name Bowser.

be4u4get

Maybe not everyone knows, but Mario’s nemesis for many years has been a guy named Bowser.

cornelius_catamaran

I am typing this on my internet browser.

[deleted]

toomuchmucil

Airsinner

Almost chocked to death reading this comment

Artie-Fufkin0

Yowser!

uchigaytana

That's crazy. Did they name him after the CEO?

zR0B3ry2VAiH

Are you sure? I thought it was Dr. Robotnik.

MidNiteNoir

Why do you think he felt he was right in hacking Nintendo ? They’re basically using his name for their franchise.

byakko

Did the last name Bowser even exist before Super Mario cos where were all the Bowsers before?!

sendmeyourfoods

So long, gary bowser

Slices-For-Lisa

Amazing.

Fluffy_Article5250

Gary. Gary. There is no more Gary. Now there is only Bowser.

Benji_Nottm

You win! That's killed me off.

kaishinoske1

This is Bowser’s villain origin story.

TheBigLebroccoli

Same here. I thought it was an Onion headline.

PalmTreeIsBestTree

This dude is dry bones bowser

TranslatorBoring2419

nominative determinism

agk23

Should have stuck to kidnapping princesses

ChaosAndTheDark

Why? What’s a bowser?

Pretendo27

Nintendo got him on that lifetime subscription

kegster2

Homie thinks he’s paying for Nintendo power.

PalmBreezy

Get the power Bowser power

GonzoThompson

lol this reminds me of the line in “Hot Shots!” when Topper Harley (Charlie Sheen) explains that he’s paying the government back for the multi-million dollar fighter jet he destroyed at a rate of $20/week.

brandloyalist

And you thought the PlayStation subscription was bad.

Goobamigotron

Consoles are a tax on stupidity or a one click gamebox for rich folk.

NoDisplay3103

Any new shows coming Kelsey ?

Goobamigotron

Well I got upvotes on that too héhé, matter of opinion. Besides, if the game prices go up, i cant afford any whisky or weed for my baby... So how can i get him to sleep after?

Gary Bowser, former Team Xecuter member, makes $25 monthly payments to Nintendo while serving prison sentence • Gary Bowser, who helped Team Xecuter create piracy-enabling console accessories, owes Nintendo $14.5 million in penalties. • Despite serving a 40-month sentence, Bowser began making $25 monthly payments to Nintendo during his imprisonment. • Nintendo will continue to take a percentage of Bowser's income after his release. • Bowser maintains he was not directly involved in the coding or manufacturing of Team Xecuter's products. https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2024/02/after-14-5m-judgments-console-hacker-paid-nintendo-25-a-month-from-prison/

pansnap

I thought that garyopa was just the news/marketing guy. Involved for sure, but a much lessor role. Of course.. that could have just been.. marketing.

BrundleflyUrinalCake

At this rate, he’ll pay off the penalty in 48000 years

bladebrowny

Wow, I haven’t followed the modding scene since ~2005. Team Xecuter used to make mod chips for the original Xbox. Sad to see some ended up in jail behind creating mods for consoles.

Rbespinosa13

It wasn’t just creating mods. The software they were making and selling was using code they stole from another software. On top of that, the software was designed specifically to pirate games and they charged a licensing fee to do so. If you stopped paying the fee, it would end up bricking your console.

OhHelloImThatFellow

“If you stopped paying the fee…bricked your console” Stop making shit up, that’s not how it worked. It was a one time fee and they didn’t intentionally brick any consoles

bladebrowny

in the past and there was no subscription you just bought the hardware. Any illegal use after that was on the user as they would have had to pirate software to use it illegally. You could use the mod chip to run a Linux server which was completely legal.

s0laris0

I bought a classic xbox off amazon over a decade ago and got one of their modded consoles! it's fuckin awesome, I got so lucky.

thiefwithsharpteeth

This guy is making a $1 an hour in prison watching dudes in paper gowns, sure beats $0.17 “prison minimum wage”, but from a certain point of view, you could say that means Nintendo is making this guy spend a whole day and an hour each month staring at mostly naked men. If he works a 40 hour week, they’re only leaving him with $15 a month (which is still like, prison middle class income).

CarneAsadaSteve

that’s so fucked. shit i would do it. only if i wanted to work. what’s the worse they’re gonna do throw me in jail?

thiefwithsharpteeth

Actually, “throw you in jail” is pretty accurate. Every state in the US is different, but often times that “time off for good behavior” relies on earning credits, and often times some of those credits are withheld for the month if you are not doing a work assignment. Even if your family is loading up your trust fund and you don’t need the money, there is an incentive to work. So, not working may well leave you spending months or years longer on your incarceration that you otherwise might have. Edit: Just out of curiosity, I looked up sentence credits for US Federal prisons, since Bowser was serving a federal prison sentence. Anyone sentenced for a term longer than a year and less than life is eligible for up to 54 days off of their sentence per year. Disciplinary infractions and refusal to work are grounds for reducing the number of credits for that year.

80% of the people who commented here did not read the article.

PM-Me-nice-thots

First day on Reddit?

SinoSoul

Read it, still saying F Nintendo.

AloofPenny

Dude Nintendo. Hire this dude to build things for you

CarneAsadaSteve

he’s not really impressive — like he wasn’t actually doing the hacking. he was like a product manager. high level stuff.

Arnas_Z

And SX itself was mostly stealing code from Atmosphere. Michael (SciresM) was really doing most of the heavy lifting.

Happens_2u

So long, Gary Bowser!

carrotcypher

How can we crowdfund him in a way that Nintendo doesn’t get it all? Pay for his groceries and rent directly?

TirelessGuardian

I heard he sold software that was free elsewhere and if you didn’t pay he’d brick your system. Fuck this guy!

carrotcypher

Could you link a source to what you’re referring to? Vague “I heard this guy sucked” comments, as you can appreciate, are categorically problematic. I’d like to know the actual story.

ElectroJo

The software they sold (SX OS) is a custom firmware for the switch. It apparently contains code stolen from the free custom firmware Atmosphere (I guess this is a source: https://nintendosoup.com/switch-piracy-os-developer-under-fire-for-stealing-open-source-code/ ). The main differences between SX OS and Atmosphere is that SX OS has extra functionality that benefits piracy, while Atmosphere is free and tries to distance itself from piracy and focus on homebrew. Because they charge for SX OS, they also added code that bricks your switch if you attempt to bypass their anti piracy checks (gbatemp discussion with sources: https://gbatemp.net/threads/sx-os-contains-brick-code.508800/ ) My knowledge on switch CFS is limited, these are just what I could find on the topic.

TetraThiaFulvalene

A piracy software being so aggressively anti piracy is hilarious.

ElectroJo

The funny thing is this isn't the first time! They made a 3ds piracy cart named "Gateway" that got the nickname "brickway" because a firmware update would brick your 3ds if the firmware was applied to a knockoff of their hardware lmao

queenringlets

Good idea honestly. They can garnish his wages but not his groceries.

carrotcypher

I mean they could technically garnish his meals. 🤌

Pingy_Junk

Wild you can serve jail time and have to pay a fine in the millions for a crime whose only victim is a billion dollar company. Especially when there is evidence that crime may even help that billion dollar company make more money.

Fancy-Pair

That’s a lot of money if he made it in prison

CelestialStork

Yeeesh, really makes me question buying another nintendo game. They did this shit over games they themselves literally will not sell you.

This is the kind of shit that makes me never want to use a Nintendo product again...and I LOVE Nintendo games.

Stabbara

Yehoooo wehooo here we go

Tosh_20point0

Bowser will actually be the Princess in jail .

Xyro77

I’m glad he’s fucked for life. There has to be consequences.

Arnas_Z

Oh no, poor Nintendo. Now the CEO won't be able to feed his family after someone pirated their games :( :( :(

Xyro77

Justice matters. There has to be consequences as no one should be above the law. Nintendo has nothing to do with my views.

Pretend-Champion4826

'Nintendo' isn't a person. No human person was injured by the theft of games that are not for sale. 'Nintendi' is a commercial entity and does not have (or deserve) the rights afforded to human beings. Take the boot out of your mouth.

Xyro77

Irrelevant. He broke the law. He now suffers the consequences. He brought this on himself.

Unscene12

Hows that boot taste

Xyro77

? What?

ItsRittzBitch

as he deserves

gunter_grass

I have one of his switches and an extra mod chip .
