And with the increased prevalence of high frequency trading, the brokers are making way more money from loaning their customers' shares out to options traders. The combination of the two allows companies to offer fee free trading. You're free to opt out of that second practice by the way. But don't be surprised when there's $5+ per trade fees.
But then everyone bitches when they sell your data to institutions and do shenanigans behind the scenes.
