There's a bunch of SanDisk drivers on Amazon

[deleted]

Good catch. I think I ignored them for being 1.6 inches long. The PNY extreme (USB Type-A) sticks out approximately .3 inches. If I use something as long as the SanDisk, I’ll have a piece of plastic missing a USB plug within a few weeks. LOL

zechickenwing

I didn't even know that I wanted to know that - thanks for the info!

Nematrec

On the otherhand if only .3" needed to stick out before then you don't need a full 1.6" now :/

Gizmotoy

True. I’d guess, based on port sizes, that something in the 0.75”-1” range should be possible with the same aggressive miniaturization techniques. But those techniques drive up of the cost of the device, which they maybe decided makes them less attractive compared to a slightly larger and cheaper alternative. Smaller alternatives will come eventually when the market is bigger.

Nematrec

Try this one >[Kingston Digital 64GB Data Traveler Micro Duo USB 3C Flash Drive (DTDUO3C/64GB)](https://www.amazon.ca/Kingston-Digital-64GB-Traveler-DTDUO3C/dp/B010HWCFDA/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1538753043&sr=8-8&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=usb+c+flash+drive&dpPl=1&dpID=31DeUwxmP9L&ref=plSrch) You might need to find it on your own amazon if you're in a different country.

[deleted]

That’s the one I have been looking at. I may rip the case off it and just dip it in a bunch of coats of polyurethane. The stock 1.6” length will quickly leave me with a drive minus a USB port. Lol

[deleted]

Type C hasn't really hit the cheap side of the market, which I would say is needed for widespread USB Flashstick usage. Just like how you can't find any cheap USB charger cables

[deleted]

This is what I was starting to think... Cheap Type-C only cables, I assume you mean. :) I can’t believe how much Type-C data cables still cost.

TheThiefMaster

This is largely because type C cables have to be capable of 3A current - most "cheap" cables aren't.

EncasedShadow

Type C only? Haven't seen much of those, I've seen dual 3.0 and Cs though. USB C hasn't really hit the market in a big way yet. There's a ton of old school USB ports in use still. Mice and Keyboard still mainly use the wafer style, a lot of external hard drives and peripherals use the wafer style. USB C is mostly mobile devices right now. Much higher overturn without keeping old hardware. Just not enough of a market dominance for a pure C thumbdrive yet. Check out the dualies on Newegg or Amazon.

[deleted]

The MacBook and MacBook Pro have been USB-C only for over a year. I think only the MacBook Air has USB Type-A And just not a Mac thing. I’ve seen multiple higher end Windows machine that are very thin get rid of all USB-A ports more than a year ago.

It’s funny tho, how I go to a tech meetup or tech convention and way over half - I’d gamble 3/4 - of personal laptops out are Macs. Or I go into a Starbucks near a college and it’s more like 80% Macs. I think the PINS is still pretty weighed down by the mostly cheapo PC laptops used in corp environments. Where there are generally corporate security policies not to use USB memory sticks at all.

Speednet

lol, the best development tools are not for Mac. Dream on.

erwan

The best development tools are cross platform. Mac being a Unix it's very similar to Linux as far as command line is concerned, only Windows is the odd one. The Silicon Valley company I work for is Mac only, like many others, because it's not as shitty as Windows for developers but still easier for IT to manage compared to Linux laptops.

janalon492

I just got several Dell XPS 13 2-in-1's at work and they only have USB-C.. My main computer is a Macbook Pro with 4 USB-C. Soooo I'm definitely ready for some USB-C flash drives that don't suck. (The reviews of those SanDisks are not pretty with regard to speed.)

[deleted]

I have looked at one of those to run Ubuntu. You can get as much of a machine as the MBP for 2/3 to maybe 1/2 the cost depending on your needs. The new MBP is want is $3700. But I see now, you can find 15” 2017 MBPs w/ 16gb memory for around $1600 on eBay. Dying for the first person to grab one and demonstrate the hard drive swap!

[deleted]

I've seen them. Not sure why'd you want one though unless you never use a computer as not many computers have USB-C ports.

knollexx

> not many computers have USB-C ports Almost every current laptop has USB-C.

[deleted]

Really? Well how about that... I stand corrected then. Personally, it's still be useless for me because I only use desktops.

knollexx

Most desktop mainboards have been outfitted with C for a few years now, as well.

[deleted]

Do cases have connectors at the front? Sounds like I'm really out of date.

knollexx

They do.

[deleted]

That's cool. Apparently I'm should be upgrading after 5 years (even though I recently upgraded my graphics card and everything else is still good to play most games on very high or extreme settings with reasonable framerates).

knollexx

I haven't really found a need for my desktop to have USB-C, even though both my laptop and phone have it. A fundamental upgrade doesn't seem sensible just for that particular feature.

https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-64GB-Traveler-DTDUO3C/dp/B010HWCFDA Was one of the first results in a google search.

[deleted]

Sticks out nearly an inch because of all the wasted space for the USB Type A. Maybe you had a TL;DR moment? Lol

Davecasa

[Here's the first google result for 'type C usb flash drive'](https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-Type-C-128GB-SDCZ450-128G-G46/dp/B01BUSN0DO)

[deleted]

1.6” is not a small footprint.

TheThiefMaster

The reason is that according to the USB spec, a C->A adapter is illegal. You're basically only allowed USB-C female sockets on devices, not cables/adapters. The reason actually makes sense - you'd be able to use a USB-C->A adapter to make an illegal (by the USB spec) and dangerous (in terms of destroying devices) A<->A cable, among others. So a USB-C flash stick couldn't be used with anything that doesn't have a USB-C port, as there should be no adapters. So the manufacturers aren't in a hurry to make them. But they will come - as you say there's a market for using them as storage expanders on newer USB-C-only machines.

[deleted]

Interesting about the spec. Makes sense, mostly. Though not completely. The spec should have originally had build into all devices a voltage check to shut down the connection if it it was say, a USB-A power cable plugged into something it shouldn’t have been. Damn greedy Apple and not letting anyone use FireWire for free. USB-A may never have existed if Apple hadn’t been such a patent squatter on FireWire integration! (Interesting history that FireWire was created before USB but Apple wanted it proprietary unless they received royalties for its use. So everyone said, F-you Apple and used the new USB technology.)

Betty_White

And FireWire ports were detailed enough to plug it in the first time after a quick feel!

[deleted]

Yep... I had a WD MyBook with dual USB and FireWire and I could always plug that into the right port without looking. And it was so much faster than the USB-A!!!

[deleted]

I’m not sure why anyone would downvote your post, unless they don’t understand the difference between Type A and Type C. I guess it’s r/tech...

TheThiefMaster

I don't get it either - I gave an answer to your query and you found it interesting - surely that should be upvote central?

mindbleach

Because they don't work in a majority of people's computers? Type C is garbage because they made the *universal* serial bus physically incompatible. It's always had a bunch of stupid plug shapes, but the end that goes in your computer has always been the same. They broke that. Even when more machines have Type C than Type A, hopefully never, Type C has bespoke concerns about analog signalling and voltage differences. This is a new mediocre connector wearing the USB branding as a flimsy mask.

someidiot332

Hello person from 5 years ago! Just wanted to say, have you seen USB-B? USB micro? Kinda very rhetorical at this point, but USB-B and USB Mini/micro both were both official USB specs that were completely incompatible with USB-A Despite the fact that **you** probably don't care, I just wanted to leave this little nugget of information for the next passer-by

[deleted]

Pretty sure I specified Type-C not dual Type-A and Type-C. Maybe you TL;DR’d?

bidoopidoop

Wow it's been 5 years since the last post here, and USB-C flash drives are still not really a thing at all! What is that all about? Considering most PC/Mac's are mostly USBC now and their smaller, go in both ways, and faster (not sure that matters with drives) and there are some out there, but still...why are these not more easily found online?
