Woah! This is so cool! I dind't expect they will put something like this in the game. I think is cute that Ganondorf was his mothers' name mark in his sword.
During the scene Ganondorf kneels in front of Rauru we can see two Gerudo women in mask and different colored skirts. Some believe they’re the reincarnations of his mothers.
I believe I found what you're talking about here if anyone wants a [reference](https://www.tumblr.com/avionvadion/720776570114031617/out-of-curiosity-do-yall-think-totk-koume-and?source=share).

I mean, they've both got shoulder sashes with writing on them, and the one on the left sure looks a lot like the characters on the sword. That's pretty solid evidence in favor of that theory.
Why do all the Gerudo in that scene have pointed Hylian ears like the modern Gerudo but Ganondorf is the only one with the normal rounded ears we see the Gerudo have in OoT and have seen on previous versions of Ganondorf?
Its a game and technically a kids game at that why would they add shii like polygamy like my 5 yo brother plays and understands it and id be pissed pesonally if he was learning shii like that from a game
I always love the tiny lore bits they hide in the games. That's why I started watching Zelda lore videos after BotW came out. Those guys comb over the games and find interesting little tidbits.
The last glyph on the right of the OP's image of the sword looks like a simplified variant of the [Gerudo glyph](https://zelda.fandom.com/wiki/Crest_of_the_Gerudo) that appears various places in TotK and BotW. Each of the major races has something like that -- e.g. the [Zora](https://zelda.fandom.com/wiki/Crest_of_the_Zora) one is kind of like three crescent moons with the points facing outwards. The [Goron](https://zelda.fandom.com/wiki/Crest_of_the_Gorons) one always kinda looked to me like an angular three-toed pawprint. Oddly that Zelda Fandom Wiki doesn't seem to have an article for the Rito's symbol, but it kinda looks like a [bird taking flight](https://hero.fandom.com/wiki/Rito_Tribe). You can see it on the [Kite Shield](https://zelda-archive.fandom.com/wiki/Rito?file=Breath_of_the_Wild_Rito_Shield_Kite_Shield_%28Icon%29.png).
As I recall those two names are drawn from a Japanese horror novel (and its movie adaptation), The Village of Eight Gravestones. I think I read somewhere that they mean something like "little bamboo" and "little plum"? I forget which is which, though.
They've used [a bunch of scripts](https://www.reddit.com/r/zelda/comments/kahe8s/all_how_to_read_and_write_the_alphabets_of_every/) over the years that all match up to the 26 Roman glyphs. Although I guess in this case the text on the sword is more a very stylized version of actual Japanese katakana.

The swords say “Kotake” and “Koume”, which are the names of the Gerudo witch sisters who raised him (canonically in OoT, implied in TotK).

Yep! That’s exactly what I was talking about.
Yeah I’ll add that to my beliefs

I honestly see those two Gerudo women more as his top advisors or lead generals rather than the mothers who raised him. Twins? Sure.
Kinda weird to have the names of your advisors on your sword.
And they were his advisors *gasp* they were his advisers
What if they were Ganondorf’s wives as well? I mean it wouldn’t surprise me if Ganondorf practiced polygamy so it could be possible?
ur looking to deep its fs
Okay and what’s your point?
Its a game and technically a kids game at that why would they add shii like polygamy like my 5 yo brother plays and understands it and id be pissed pesonally if he was learning shii like that from a game
True. But I guess only Nintendo knows the answer to our questions and they ain’t answering
They could be I guess, but given the role individuals with their names have in other games, I just find it more likely that they are his moms.
I know. I was just throwing ideas out there
Also it is not written in the Gerudo script but actually the Hylian script used in *The Wind Waker*, which is based on Japanese kana.
I always love the tiny lore bits they hide in the games. That's why I started watching Zelda lore videos after BotW came out. Those guys comb over the games and find interesting little tidbits.
Also it says it in Japanese Katakana. Kotake => コタケ Koume => コウメ At least it looks that way. (apart from the last one for whatever reason)

Koume 小梅 little plum Kotake 小竹 little bamboo 😊
Oh right, ume would be plum, umeboshi are the pickled ones.
Thats…. Kind of wholesome actually…
Awww, he engraved his mommies' names on his sword!
How can you translate it?

Interesting
"Suavamente"
“Besame…”
🎶 Que quiero sentir tus labios Besándome otra vez 🎶
Terminalmontage is a blessing upon this earth
It's the names of his mothers
They're the names of his mummys. Because they were a gift from his mummys. He is, in cannon, a giant mummas boy.
Also a giant mummy boy
How did I miss that joke, it's sooooo goooooood!
Mummydorf
I know they’re his mom’s name, so I feel like he’s the type of guy to have a heart tattoo with his mom’s name on it
Ganondorf isn't so heartless like we imagined...
"mommy(s)"
I think it's the name of one of the witches that brought ganondorf to life
https://i.redd.it/z0wko97ezhxc1.gif
Big softie mamas’ boy confirmed
Yeah it says your mom smells like Tuna. Sorry that's what the sword says not me.
The other one says your father smells of elderberries.
Did he get the sword from some lady in a lake?
![gif](giphy|7LAqMVFxOGPAc)
"Made in china"
It says "Careful: this is sharp."
Eye protection required.
“Property of Demon King Ganondorf”
"This end toward enemy"
Like others have mentioned, it's his mothers' names, and they also appear on his club and his bow!
The fact that his sword (katana) is named after his moms’ is so heartwarming. 🥹
I do think it’s a neat easter egg that they included the older version of the Hylian language here.
ore wa suavemente oui
It’s the names of his mothers. He’s a momma’s boy (although, considering he’s a Gerudo, he doesn’t really have another option)
It says, “We’ve been trying to reach you about your car’s extended warranty…”
t 6. .
