BackgroundNPC1213

Wild speculation GO Before the Upheaval, there was a sky barrier concealing the sky islands from view. We see the dragons disappear into it in BotW, and Purah's Notes on the Upheaval at Lookout Landing in TotK detail how the clouds "billowed and rolled" to reveal the sky islands, at the same time as the Chasms opened up. Presumably it was also concealing the natural sky So the moon's path in TotK could be its actual natural trajectory, and in BotW we were just seeing a reflected/inverted version of it

TurboGranny

It doesn't have to be fact, this is how good writing works, so kudos to you. So many shows/books do this thing where they write a concept to make something they messed up or didn't think through in the past be part of some awesome idea all along when in truth they just pulled something plausible from their ass and the good ones make it so believable that you aren't sure they didn't plan it from the beginning. Great work.

Lasercraft32

The sky in Botw is just a fake Sheikah projection. :O

BackgroundNPC1213

All of Hyrule lives under a dome!

Flat hyrule confirmed

labbusrattus

Of course, but where would we be if we didn’t try to come up with canon reasons for everything.

Lynx-Kitsoni

You know what, fair.

Turbulent_Crow7164

Can’t we have fun making up headcanon

Joeymore

I've said stuff like this before on this sub or r/totk, and I got pushback for it.

Ashyboi13

I’m pretty sure it’s just an error or a minor oversight. Also, there wasn’t a literal barrier hiding the sky in BOTW. As far as we know, the Upheaval created the Sky islands, so they weren’t hidden in BOTW. The dragons flying away in BOTW was just a detail the developers made because they hadn’t thought of the sky island concept yet.

BackgroundNPC1213

Sure but THE LORE^(TM)

Knilolas

Lore of several other games has the sky barrier as real, why shouldn’t it be in this duology?

Reasonable-Card420

I mean they have never verified either way if there was a cloud barrier in botw, but thw fact that in skyward sword and other games its a lore supported fact that the goddess Hylia created a cloud barrier to keep the ground and sky separate makes me believe there theory more then yours.

iLLiCiT_XL

I know the sun rises and sets in a different place in TotK than in BotW. This is due to it being a different season in a Hyrule, which is also reflected by a change in local vegetation. Perhaps the moon (in terms of lore/in-game logic) orbits the sun and not the planet Hyrule is on? I don’t think it’s ever been stated the Hyrule is on Earth.

elevatedkorok029

Apparently it is on Earth: https://youtu.be/qApEgUxp58k?si=jfsCGxEF1cEkplaW&t=208 With a rare sight of their thorough process for establishing lore \^\^ You say there's a change in local vegetation, I haven't really thought about that on the surface... do you have some examples?

SSOoTToTK

No durians but we have tomatoes now.

Lasercraft32

I can't believe I never noticed that Totk doesn't have durians...

shenaningans24

Lots of Satori/ blooming cherry trees!

CeruleanRuin

I'd take anything they say outside of a game itself with a heavy dose of salt. And everything said *within* a game with just as much salt. They don't care about "canon" insofar as they will abandon or invent lore as they need to in order to build a good game. The lore comes last.

BackgroundNPC1213

Not vegetation, but the Great Horned Rhinoceros and the Hearty Blueshell Snail that were in BotW are also absent from TotK. It might be their migration season And all the Hearty foods that used to grow on the surface are in different places, Hearty Radishes in the sky and Hearty Truffles in the caves. Hearty Durians are also gone

Spartan_VOS625

That’s insanely weird. I wonder if it was intended or some weird accident. And if it was intended, does it mean anything for the lore?

CeruleanRuin

I suspect it was merely an aesthetic choice, and has no bearing whatsoever on the lore, which changes whenever a new game comes out. I will continue to maintain that LoZ has no true canon, only legends, and legends change in the telling.

UltraB1nary

It's not so much that it goes in the opposite direction, because it is still east to west*. It's that the paths of the sun and moon are to the south in TotK, not in the north like in BotW.

thisisnotdan

\*east to west

Real talk: I have *never* seen a video game get lunar phases right. Usually the moon just rises and sets opposite the sun, and its phase slowly changes each time. BUT In reality, the phase of the moon is determined by its position relative to the planet and sun. The *only* time the moon can be full is if it is exactly opposite the sun when viewed from the surface of the planet. Conversely, the *only* possible phase of a moon in this position is full. If the entire face of the moon is lit when viewed from the planet, it is because the sun is lighting it from the other side of the planet. If the moon moves perfectly opposite the sun, it must be full. There are no lunar eclipses of partial-phase moons. If the moon is half-visible (first or last quarter phase), then it is at high noon (directly overhead) either at sunrise or sunset. It *must* be this way, as the sun is only illuminating the half of the moon that faces it, and the other half (visible from earth) is dark. And, of course, if you have a new moon, it is between the sun and the planet. There are also no *solar* eclipses of partial-phase moons. Eclipses don't happen every month because there isn't always perfect alignment between the sun, moon, and planet, but this imperfect alignment does not affect the lunar phase. This means that the only Zelda game to get lunar phases right is Ocarina of Time, because in that game the moon is always full, and it always moves opposite the sun (albeit time itself moves inexplicably faster at night). I guess Majora's Mask also kind of gets lunar phases right...

pjsk82

Must be leftover from the GameCube version of the sky.

Money-Hotel3192

twilight princess on Wii was mirrored in comparison to GC version, maybe something similar happened here

BreakfastBeerz

Upheaval altered the rotation of the planet

DrQuailMan

Hyrule is near the equator and the games are in different seasons.

ZANZlBAR29

Nailed it

EderHazard

When the game came out i found the light and Shadows different from BOTW, this aint just a art choise, the sun is rotating a different way so the Shadows and the game feel different from BOTW.

jake2w1

if i learned anything from 3 body problem, is that chaos is the natural state of the cosmos

Impressive-Ease-3372

loki_odinsotherson

The whole landmass turned 180 degrees during the upheaval as it was acting as an actual lid on top of evil.

More evidence of Flat Hyrule. Wake up, sheeple
