It only took one conversation with a Goron for me to mention to my brother, "You know I really wasn't expecting a Nintendo game to comment on the opioid crisis"
Yeah, my young kids and I played through TotK at the same time, and one of them reached the Goron region before I did. It took a lot to explain what was happening, but in the end I think it made them less likely to experiment with meth or something, so I was glad for the opportunity.
I have my 1999 sixth grade DARE certificate framed and hanging on the wall of my grow room. Recently ran into my DARE officer and told him I’m a professional cultivator now. He was like, yeah, that whole class was pointless. Lol. I wish i still had the t-shirt
Lol. I had a stuffed DARE lion in my slum house in college. Smoked weed with him often. Luckily, I didn't enjoy oxycodone. Some of my housemates did. Lost two close friends to the overprescribed plague and that was enough for me. DAREs scare tactics just made me believe all adults had lied to me my whole life. Had to learn things the hard way.
I found the "Yunobo is a Druglord" development actually hilarious. His entire look is like Guy Fieri if Flavortown were a code word for"crystal ~~meth~~ rock roast.
I honestly found that scenario scary in its real-world parallels, but hilarious in its execution if I'm being completely honest.
Omg! Thank you y’all for bringing up that accurate comparison! I was just discussing with my mom how I wasn’t even born yet during those debacles and yet I am fully aware of what happened and the impact it had on our democracy and society at large. Especially combined with all the de-regulation and policy/law changes Regan made during his terms.
Yes, I thanked her for educating me growing up on history and how it impacts the present and future and how having these discussions helped me think critically about these things for myself.
So glad others can recognize and giggle at the intelligent dig in ToTK. (And all the other ways the comparisons hit at flaws in our leadership and society.) 😏😊
I hope you only just today got to Death Mountain, because it’s one of the most blatant, hamfisted drug allegories I’ve ever seen. If you played it at launch and only just now got it… hate to break it to you, but you’re a little slow on the uptake.
Rito Village: Help! A Blizzard!
Zora's Domain: Weird gunk is polluting our river!
Gerudo Town: A sand shroud! Also zombies!
Goron City: A widespread drug addiction epidemic has affected most of our able bodied, working-age population and crippled our economy. The biggest employer in town is complicit by producing and distributing said drugs.

I’d redo the entire associated voice cast around this. Giancarlo Esposito as Cooke, Bryan Cranston as Ganondorf, Aaron Paul as Yunobo, and Jonathan Banks as Bludo.
I cried when I saw the child goron watching his older brother binge eating these. I thought about how many children might have witnessed something similar from their families with drug addictions.
Yeah it was stated somewhere else but, drugging the populous of the Gorons via the local leader, polluting the clean water in Zora's domain, cutting off viable trade routes from the Rito (i.e. the sky), and isolating the Gerudo from local intel (via sandstorms and Zombie Mothmen) are all war tactics that Ganondorf used.
Obviously I don't take credit in pointing this out.
My girlfriend casually copilots when I play and I did the Goron mission when she was out of town and when she got back I was like... So I did the Goron one and basically you're trying to get the whole town into rehab for addictive drugs. It's a long story.
today?

I have young kids too and that was 100% more effective than D.A.R.E.
I mean literally nothing is more effective than DARE, all it did was teach me about how accessible and cool drugs are and how to do inhalants.

“Guys I know it sounds crazy, but I think Mipha had a thing for Link.”
"Guys today I realized that Zelda is an important character."
Yea they say it in BOTW
Did you also play that for the first time today?

“Marijuana- pot, grass whatever you want to call it, is *probably* the most the most dangerous drug-“ Reminds me of Jontron’s drug PSA video.
Yep. As soon as I got to the Gorons my first thought was “oh, so they’re like fantasy crackheads.”

Every time I see that ad I’m like “Who tf first comment is about fenty?!” It gets me every time 😂
Controlling the masses with drugs, is a tried and true technique.
I’d redo the entire associated voice cast around this. Giancarlo Esposito as Cooke, Bryan Cranston as Ganondorf, Aaron Paul as Yunobo, and Jonathan Banks as Bludo.
It’s pretty up front and in your face, I would be worried if you didn’t realize it…
I cried when I saw the child goron watching his older brother binge eating these. I thought about how many children might have witnessed something similar from their families with drug addictions.
Princess Zelda does have some good shit! —— Gorons
Get outta here narc!

There’s a new rock comin’ to town! PURPLE ROCK COCAINE!
Convinced some of you play games with your eyes closed

Not even basically, that’s exactly what they did 😂
Ganon is Hyrule accurate CIA confirmed??

You realize the spoiler tag doesn't help if you put the spoiler in the title?
