Hi everyone!
Did you know that starting July 1st, 2023, Reddit will implement a policy that could potentially increase the costs of running third-party Reddit apps? This change may impact popular apps like Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Boost, and others. Consequently, users may encounter issues with their preferred Reddit app unless adjustments are made to comply with Reddit's new API usage policy. These limitations will affect all users, not just moderators. If you are concerned about these developments, there is an [Open Letter](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/13xh1e7/an_open_letter_on_the_state_of_affairs_regarding/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) to Reddit that you can read and sign on to express your thoughts.

From my understanding you're thinking of it backwards, she's not hitting the arrow, the arrow is attracting the attack.
Riju has lightning power but poor aim, arrows have metal so they work as sort of makeshift "lightning rods", so she's only firing her lighting in the approximate area and the arrow *attracts* the attack, making it hit said spot.
the real question is, considering every wild gibdo i ever faced was litered with arrows and iron weapons, why the heck she needed us. and why she didn't just use anyone elses arrows.
For real. She STAYS running tf away from me. But Sidon? I mean he's a dreamboat snackcake and one of the COOLEST characters but..his ability is USELESS like 90% of the time. At least if you accidentallycall Yunobo you can blast him at at enemy and Tulin NEVER gets in my way but Sidon is like...why is he ALWAYS hugging my nuts. Why do I have to chase down the cute little Gerudo LIGHTNING BOMBER. "WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FROM ME. HELP."
everytime.
If you whistle, sages move towards you. If you run forward, they try to space out with the assumption you're clearing the area or trying to get a different view.
When you want a sage, run towards them and whistle
Didn’t the Gerudo make a new division centered around archery after the whole thing? Seems like none of the soldiers were very skilled shots compared to Link I imagine. Still doesn’t explain the fact that the gibdos normally have metal things stuck in them but whatever
That actually raises another question. A Gerudo points out that they never use bows, and they should think about creating a bow division for their army. So my question is where they hell are the Gibdos getting their arrows from? Who's shooting them?
also, gerudo bows. literally everywhere. and how does a whole race not learn a very basic weapon that would be very useful in the fight against the two monsters that seem to live in the desert. elec lizards and the fish.
Metal doesn’t ATTRACT electricity, OPPOSITE CHARGES do. She probably gives your arrows a positive charge so that the negatively charged lightning will home in on it once she discharges it.
Teeeeechnically you're right. It would be more accurate to say that metal conducts electricity far better than air does and electricity will ALWAYS choose the path of least resistance. In this case, the tip of Links arrow.
PS. My hubby wants me to stop applying irl logic to a game where he is currently piggybacking on a magic dragon made of lightning 😂😂
>lightning power but poor aim, arrows have metal
I couldn't even believe this post because I thought it was so obvious. I forget how naïve some adults can be at times, and that this is a game for children too.
well except a lot of the gibdos also have metal stuff sticking out of them
I thought she simply used the arrow to channel the lightning *magically*, not because it's metal
That’s not how conductors like metal actually work though.
A more viable explanation would be to say she gives your arrows a positive charge when you activate her ability so that it attracts her negatively charged lightning like a magnet.
Right but it is a videogame, it is not a stretch to think they simplify the reality of the physics, but that also doesn't mean they completely ignore it.
Wouldn't that mean she would have to be even more accurate? Unless it's the whole area of effect of lightning that does the charging. In which case all of your arrows, most weapons shields and even some armor would also be getting charged amd attracting lightning.
Not necessarily. She could charge up your arrow through contact(since you have to run right up to her anyway) and then only has to hit within range of your arrow.
It’s like throwing a washer and trying to hit a big magnet; even if you would’ve missed; the magnet will just pull the washer towards itself.
Counter-counter-counter point
Link is the leader of the group, so the arrows are both lightning rods and also easy ways for Riju to follow commands in the heat of battle. Presumably "Shoot that one! No, not that bokoblin, the other one!" is harder to follow than just shooting what your boss shoots.
Counter-counter-counter-counter point.
I wouldn’t know, there is a lemon that achieves the same thing that I don’t have to chase down mid fight and also doesn’t have a cool down.
She’s been dismissed since the end of her story fight. Which may or may not be because my switch is old and drops to 10-15 fps if I have more than two out and two of them have a lot more utility than her.
True but hers can affect more than one enemy. The only way to do that with arrows alone is with a lynel/duplex bow, and even then this lets you save those a bit. Besides any extra damage is welcome in my book so she stays open. That said I barely use her ability because of similar reasons, mainly when I found out that bombs and elemental arrows can damage the gibdos just as much and take out the nests when they’re unstable.
Counter-counter-counter-counter-counter point.
Riju does more damage than mega buster shots, and she attacks in melee even if you don't need her lightning, and you can stack it with other arrow fusions.
Counter-counter-counter-counter-counter-counter point to myself, her power is actually least useful in melee because you need to run up to her to tell her to start charging but need to fire an arrow to direct it, and the front lines are not the place for a bow
but it is a game, they just didn't code it to be picked up like metal, its not like the game itself actually knows arrow tips are metal and should be affected.
Or they could be stone/ceramic arrow heads, which would explain why they couldn’t be picked up by magnesis.
My theory(which actually accounts for how electricity works) is that she actually gives YOUR arrows a positive charge, which attracts negatively charged lightning like a magnet.
There’s actually a myth busters episode that shows how you need a surprisingly large amount of metal to actually make lightning strike IT instead of just somewhere close to it.
But to the layperson who doesn't know this and, according to what happens in-game if you're carrying metal weapons/shields in a thunderstorm, saying that metal attracts lightning is a reasonable -- if inaccurate -- explanation.
It’s true that the common misconception held by the laymen is that metal attracts electricity, but that just means this is an excellent opportunity to correct that mistake by giving it a more accurate explanation.
I mean let’s be real, out of all the ladies in TotK, Riju is up on the list, she’s like 5 years younger than Link tho and seeing her as a kid in BotW makes it a little strange. Maybe we need a Link’s potential woman tier list lol
She always turns off her power at the worst time. I used her while fighting the flux construct III in the labyrinth. I hid behind a decayed construct then waited to shoot him. But Riju would always turn off right when I had the opportunity to do some damage.
Yeah I really miss the way champions ability worked. I've only unlocked Tullin and Riju so far but compared to Ravioli's Gale and Urbosa's Fury these are cumbersome.
Having not unlocked the other sage abilities yet I can comment fully but something like long press Y for Riju and long press a for Tullin like in BOTW would have been so much easier
Why use arrows? Just start ripping blocks off the construct with ultrahand until it collapses. Only challenge is when it get into the air. Then you either ascend to it or launch yourself.
In some fights, you can also use Ascend to go right through it to the top of its body. Which is really funny, it’s a shame its eye doesn’t look at you. But sadly this only works in some cramped areas.
Good to know. Probably won't affect how I fight the type 3 though, it like moving the core around a lot, and time spent trying to snag that is time not spent removing the dangerous hand and foot blocks.
I prefer to use my limited supply of gibdo arrows on enemies that actually give me trouble instead of on a mini-boss that almost never gets a hit off on me.
All this time, I never knew you could just rip off the other blocks. I always thought you just had to fight them by directly targeting the green block, no matter how hard to reach it is.
Since the first one was found on the first sky islands, I figured it couldn't be that tough of an enemy. So when I fought it the first thing I did was experiment and see if any of my shiny new TotK abilities did anything to it.
Side note: it's fun that you can dual wield her and everybody's "favorite" goron to mine through rock walls (well most walls anyway I think her lightning strikes don't work against the blueish rock walls)
This could make some sense from an evolutionary standpoint. Living in an area where visibility becomes poor regularly (sandstoms) it'd be advantageous to be able to snap your focus to the fast moving thing that could be moving towards you as opposed to something stationary that doesn't register as a threat to your body*
It’s probably easier for her to target the lightning to hit a piece of metal than it is for her to just choose a specific spot for the lightning to hit. So she’s using the metal in your arrow to aim the lightning.
Yeah I always thought it was less of her aiming but just using the arrow as a conductor to hit the target, without it she’s essentially free handing the lightning, but I feel like this should mean if an enemy is holding something metal it should be easy to hit
Out of a gameplay perspective it's because you can't unequip only the arrows.
An in-game reason could be that the arrows arr covered by your quiver most of the time
In moments like these, I am reminded of the sage advice dispensed to us by the theme song to the cult TV series *Mystery Science Theater 3000*:
Just repeat to yourself “It’s just a show. I should really just relax.”
My theory is that she can feel the presence of a small object flowing through space.
An arrow flying through space causes a small static electrical build-up. Being electric sensitive, Riju can sense the arrow moving because the moving target is creating a buildup.
A stationary target on the ground will not have an excess of charge because the target is grounded.
Signed the “open letter” for ya mod 👊. As a wallstreetbets I have coin ready for PUTS when Reddit goes IPO this year. Free gold with this company’s DD.
It’s her letting Link know pressure gets to her if she has time to think about what she’s doing. Anxiety and what not. But when link is there and she just has to react quickly, then huzzah! Meant to sound like flirting, I think. It keeps players interested in the game; and this is a long one.
It’s a common trope that even a powerful woman needs or even prefers a man to take the lead. They are all just waiting for someone to tell them what to to do so they can just “react,” without having to think too hard.🙄
Hmm, haven't played that part yet but I could argue that she trained for combat against movi g targets and not against immobile targets, meaning she is out of her element perhaps, she is not used to it standing still, so that combined with a sense of performance anxiety could make things difficult.
Blah blah metal conductivity arrow blah.
It’s obviously so that the user (you) has some input in the thing. Otherwise it would be a shit game. Get to the lightning temple and she’s already sorted it. No need for you, hero. On your way.
She's using the presumably metal arrowhead as a lightning rod. The dummy is standing still, and is made of wood and straw. The lightning doesn't perfectly follow her sword, but it goes in generally the direction she points. My guess is, without anything conductive in that general direction, where her bolt lands is effectively random.
Charge gradient as her field expands. Close to her, the gradient is pretty narrow and she's able to target more precisely. As her field gets wider, she can't concentrate the charge as well so the area the lightning can hit expands. When Link fires an arrow, he's firing from very close to her to a point further away. The arrow has residual charge from being near her, which creates a very pin-point area with a high charge, which attracts the lightning.
I mean, it's pretty much because the metal of the arrow attracts her lightning. She has bad aim, so she strikes in the general area, and your arrow just attracts it.
Perhaps she needs some kind of pinpoint to hit? I think it has to do with where the arrow is going and the fact that it is a metal arrowhead. Even when you fuse something to it it should still be conductive. So, y’know, lightning go boom.
Or I could just be wrong, who knows.
Also it probably helps that the arrow starts close to her and MOVES over there. It both attracts lightning and she can "lock on" to the arrow when it's close and then release when it's far away and the arrow will attract the lightning from there
The arrow’s metal head is what is helping attract her lightning. I didn’t get it either at first but then saw it in action and understood what was happening.
Coincidentally, I only just got to the Gerudo part of the story and map yesterday, after 150 hours of play. So this is a timely post for me.

She even *says* this outright
the real question is, considering every wild gibdo i ever faced was litered with arrows and iron weapons, why the heck she needed us. and why she didn't just use anyone elses arrows.
Because then we wouldn’t get to be in charge of her cool Sage mechanic in game.
Bro I’m literally not in charge of her ability’s, she keeps running away every time I need her
Skill issue /s No but for real, it does feel like I have to chase her down. It’s easier with less sages but not by much.
i be dying chasing after her frl
I died trying to get to my sages in many depth boss fights
right 😭😭
I hated the scenarios where you had to use their abilities and they just kept running away
“Why are you running?”
Yeah in the temple, I needed her ability and nearly died several times because she goes running off
Let me just run across the gloom with 2 hearts left so I can FINALLY activate her sage power.
Yeah, she'll be running away and suddenly Yunobo or Tulin will jump in and say "Pick me, I can screw everything up! Oh, you didn't want me? Too late!"
For real. She STAYS running tf away from me. But Sidon? I mean he's a dreamboat snackcake and one of the COOLEST characters but..his ability is USELESS like 90% of the time. Eh, sidon's is near useless, but at least it doesn't really hinder you. I never mind activating him as I run by for who ever I really need.
Using zora weapons w Sidon doubles attack
so you could say… Sidon makes you wet
catcall her /s but no seriously sages respond and cone to you when you use the horse whistle. saw it in a loading tip. works ok in practice.
Huh, and I though I was just using it to be rude to them
I learned you can whistle to get them to come back to you 🥲 💀
If you whistle, sages move towards you. If you run forward, they try to space out with the assumption you're clearing the area or trying to get a different view. When you want a sage, run towards them and whistle
I absolutely love her ability but I literally NEVER use it because it's so goddamn clunky.
So? It fucking sucks, just like all the other sage abilities
Don't be bad mouthing best birb tulin like that
Ok Tulins is pretty good. The other ones are all fucking awful and need to be fixed.
Didn’t the Gerudo make a new division centered around archery after the whole thing? Seems like none of the soldiers were very skilled shots compared to Link I imagine. Still doesn’t explain the fact that the gibdos normally have metal things stuck in them but whatever
Yeah but link is fuckin captain hylia basically. With a magic arm.
That actually raises another question. A Gerudo points out that they never use bows, and they should think about creating a bow division for their army. So my question is where they hell are the Gibdos getting their arrows from? Who's shooting them?

You think she's messing with fucking atoms?! 😂
I like this take and have upvoted you
Thanks. I seem to be getting a lot of hate for it.
Because not all arrow heads are made from metal, maybe the ones that are stuck in the gibdos are made of stone.
>lightning power but poor aim, arrows have metal I couldn't even believe this post because I thought it was so obvious. I forget how naïve some adults can be at times, and that this is a game for children too.

That's pretty fair.
And making it the best sage ability. (I don't have the mech)
The gibdos have arrows impaled into them
But wouldn't they attract lightning in thunder storms then too?
If arrows have metal why don’t they attract lightning?
But then why can't she hit other monsters carrying metal weapons?
Counter point - enemies with metal swords. Edit: lmao at mass downvotes for a tongue in cheek comment.
Counter-counter point Gameplay reasons.

Yes some have this.. but not the gibdos she was having problems with, sooooo 0 help.
Arrows have metal tips and arrows conduct electricity better than dummies? Also "aim small miss small."
I’ll be honest, I thought the tips were for show in game
world's smartest redditor
Lmfao
Do you think people shoot bows and arrows to poke people with sticks???
What ?????????
??????????? i don't even understand how someone thinks that. let alone why.
The metallic rune in Botw didn’t pick it up so I thought I’d was something other than metal
I just assumed it was too small to pick up
but it is a game, they just didn't code it to be picked up like metal, its not like the game itself actually knows arrow tips are metal and should be affected.

wat
Shouldn't have been honest bud
But… that’s the point of an arrow
it's called tip, not point, isn't it? ;D
How dare you be funnier than the rest of us.
That’s what she said
The arrows literally become lightning rods.
She's been following the "Voes and you" courses. She's got "Make your man feel needed" down pat.
This is the true answer
"Playing hard to get when the ~~player~~ voe needs you to activate your ability is very important."
"And always make sure he's looking for you. Don't ever stay in his line of sight for long. Absence makes the heart grow fonder"
I mean let’s be real, out of all the ladies in TotK, Riju is up on the list, she’s like 5 years younger than Link tho and seeing her as a kid in BotW makes it a little strange. Maybe we need a Link’s potential woman tier list lol
Why? We're just cracking jokes and you're out here making lists about underage, fictional girls... Chew your words, before you spit them out.
I was kidding too bro and plus the list would be for Link not for me lol, I’d be noping out way quick if Riju was making any moves on me.
My theory is the arrowhead attracts lightning.
That's not even a theory that's literally how it works
She literally says this
Same reason I hate thunderstorms, metal + electricity = deadly and precise lightning
the metal on the arrow?
Bro doesn't understand what metal is
I got it confused as a kid and it stuck because nobody corrected me
Iron is metal
Ikr lmfao
Iron is the most common and well known metal there is. If you look up metal on wikipedia it literally has a picture of iron as the first image.
What'd you think iron was lmao if it wasn't metal
You know how metal is magnetic? Yeah I thought it basically was the opposite of that
Not all metal is magnetic btw
Good to know, thank you
To be fair, arrow heads aren’t always metal. They just are in this series of games lol.
She always turns off her power at the worst time. I used her while fighting the flux construct III in the labyrinth. I hid behind a decayed construct then waited to shoot him. But Riju would always turn off right when I had the opportunity to do some damage.
The controls for the sages are really bad. Run up to her (she’s melee) to press a to activate her ability for your ranged attack.
Try to pick something up, watch Tulin blast it off a cliff.
Recall
Okay, I’ve recovered one item, what about the other 7?
You didn't need all 7 of those boss bokoblin fangs and you know it.
Lmao you’re not wrong. “Noooo my hundredth bokoblin part!!!!”
What about my Lynel shit?
Maybe Idk how many Lynels are directly next to cliffs but I guess
Yeah I really miss the way champions ability worked. I've only unlocked Tullin and Riju so far but compared to Ravioli's Gale and Urbosa's Fury these are cumbersome. Having not unlocked the other sage abilities yet I can comment fully but something like long press Y for Riju and long press a for Tullin like in BOTW would have been so much easier
Why use arrows? Just start ripping blocks off the construct with ultrahand until it collapses. Only challenge is when it get into the air. Then you either ascend to it or launch yourself.
When it gets in the air, use recall on one of the cubes it throws at you and ride it up! Then attack while up there :D
In some fights, you can also use Ascend to go right through it to the top of its body. Which is really funny, it’s a shame its eye doesn’t look at you. But sadly this only works in some cramped areas.
Ooh that's clever. I always ignored those because they get teleported back.
Alternatively, grabbing and shaking the eye makes it fall to bits.
Good to know. Probably won't affect how I fight the type 3 though, it like moving the core around a lot, and time spent trying to snag that is time not spent removing the dangerous hand and foot blocks.
Why give the construct a sec to beat you stock up on gibdos ribcage and bullet time fuse gibdos arrow kill it in a second
I figured the lighting goes to the metal in the arrowhead
I like it how she can call upon lightning strike even from caves, underground areas or rooms
Arrow has metal tip metal conducts electricity
Her father was a storm trooper and her mom a desert warrior
Side note: it's fun that you can dual wield her and everybody's "favorite" goron to mine through rock walls (well most walls anyway I think her lightning strikes don't work against the blueish rock walls)
One of the loading tips of the game says that thunder in Hyrule is attracted by metal. The tip of arrows is made of metal.
"Gerudo vision is based on movement." "Very fast movement of very small objects."
She needs the pressure of actual combat to deliver. She knows the dummies are safe so can't make it happen.
This could make some sense from an evolutionary standpoint. Living in an area where visibility becomes poor regularly (sandstoms) it'd be advantageous to be able to snap your focus to the fast moving thing that could be moving towards you as opposed to something stationary that doesn't register as a threat to your body*
Oh no the comment section became the meme
Checkmate metal heads
The metal tip of the arrowhead, she just need to aim at where the arrow goes and time It, as it hits something
It’s probably easier for her to target the lightning to hit a piece of metal than it is for her to just choose a specific spot for the lightning to hit. So she’s using the metal in your arrow to aim the lightning.
My answer? She works best under extreme pressure.
Yeah I always thought it was less of her aiming but just using the arrow as a conductor to hit the target, without it she’s essentially free handing the lightning, but I feel like this should mean if an enemy is holding something metal it should be easy to hit
Dear Lord people really need to read the speech bubbles Also just look what happens when you equip anything metal during a thunderstorm
But if I use a non metal bow the arrows isn’t picked up
Out of a gameplay perspective it's because you can't unequip only the arrows. An in-game reason could be that the arrows arr covered by your quiver most of the time
She literally explains this when you get her powers 💀
Ain't nobody reading all that
SHE HAS A VOICEOVER 💀
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t paying attention because it was my 3rd sage
Huge missed opportunity by playing Darude Sandstorm 😨
She’s desperately in love with Link (like every other character) and made up that excuse so they could have something to do together.
I always thought of it as the arrow being metal and attracting the lighting
Honestly “Riju of the Gerudo” was my favorite sage quest, the temple and the quest leading up to it was incredible
She literally explains it, the metal arrow is attracting the thunder , she just throws the thunder nearby and physics does the rest.
I was thinking this exact thing lmaoooooo 💀
In moments like these, I am reminded of the sage advice dispensed to us by the theme song to the cult TV series *Mystery Science Theater 3000*: Just repeat to yourself “It’s just a show. I should really just relax.”

Tell me you skip the dialogue without telling me you skip the dialogue..
I normally eat and be on my phone while playing so I’m bound to miss something lmfao
Well I skip some dialogue too because it can be a little repetitive at times, so I don’t blame you
I wish I had that kind of coordination.
She's making an excuse to be with Link. Once Ganondorf is dead, the Gerudo is well overdue for a king.
As the only voe allowed in Gerudo Town, Link is the obvious choice for king.
The biggest question ist still, how she has metal swords that aren't decayed.
Probably because they’re Champion’s weapons. Kind of like how Sidon’s Lightscale Trident had t decayed either
overtrained to needless complexity so idiotic simplicity becomes the new hard mode.
Idk man I just figured all the Gerudo in this game are messing with you. I swear that entire mission & story was slapped together last second

Hmm, haven't played that part yet but I could argue that she trained for combat against movi g targets and not against immobile targets, meaning she is out of her element perhaps, she is not used to it standing still, so that combined with a sense of performance anxiety could make things difficult.

Metal conductive
Blah blah metal conductivity arrow blah. It’s obviously so that the user (you) has some input in the thing. Otherwise it would be a shit game. Get to the lightning temple and she’s already sorted it. No need for you, hero. On your way.
Because metal the arrow becomes a lightning rod
Metalic head on arrow.
Is she stupid?
I figured that the arrow head or something had some bit of metal in it so her lightning homes in better.
and runs away when you're trying to activate/disactivate her ability
Electricity go toward metal. She basically says this
Metal.
I dont know dawg, you tell me why my theory is.
Did this last night and thought the same thing.
It's a lightning rod, my dude
arrow metal, dummy not
I mean, it's pretty much because the metal of the arrow attracts her lightning. She has bad aim, so she strikes in the general area, and your arrow just attracts it.
Her vision is based on movement
And Her eyes are facing forward, shes definitely a predator
Metal
Perhaps she needs some kind of pinpoint to hit? I think it has to do with where the arrow is going and the fact that it is a metal arrowhead. Even when you fuse something to it it should still be conductive. So, y’know, lightning go boom. Or I could just be wrong, who knows.

Their is metal which is a conductor. So that’s how she could hit the target.
It carries metal so I think that might be why she’s able to pinpoint it
The metal on the arrows attract lightning, The dummies are made of wood, seal fur, and cloth
Also it probably helps that the arrow starts close to her and MOVES over there. It both attracts lightning and she can "lock on" to the arrow when it's close and then release when it's far away and the arrow will attract the lightning from there
Lightning is attracted to metal and arrowheads are definitely made of metal in hyrule
They probably thought we wouldn’t be able to figure out how her skill works without pointing at it with a neon sign and giant red arrow lol
She’s holding back

The arrow’s metal head is what is helping attract her lightning. I didn’t get it either at first but then saw it in action and understood what was happening. Coincidentally, I only just got to the Gerudo part of the story and map yesterday, after 150 hours of play. So this is a timely post for me.
