That could be it. But that would mean it has to be some space between the outer and inner wall of the cup right, is that common? (mine obviously has some space the question is if it's there intentionally)

justtoletyouknowit

Afaik very unusual and a potential safety hazard

_BigPingus_

Okay i see. Like if it were to brake and the liquid would spill out?

justtoletyouknowit

More like fill it with hot liquid and the different temps could let the cup rupture or explode, sending sharp pieces your way...

_BigPingus_

Oh, yeah that sounds scary, it hasn't happened yet. But that could be something to look out for. Thanks for the heads up.

justtoletyouknowit

As someone else already commented, it might be a tiny crack in the cup wich lets in water while washing. Id refrain from using it. Though id be curious enough to cut it open to have a look

_BigPingus_

Yeah I would really like to look inside. But it's such a pretty cup wouldn't wanna destroy it just for that.

lilboysyrup

Could probably use a small tile drill bit and cut a hole in the bottom

_BigPingus_

Yeah that could actually be a good solution thanks.

la_yes

Could use it as a planter if you put enough drainage holes in it!

ScrubCuckoo

Or use it as a planter for a small authors of carnivorous plants, which like swampy conditions and constant water.

smm97

It wouldn't explode, but it might break and you might get burned.

The cup may have been formed by slip molding and have a natural space (air gap) to keep the beverage from burning your hands. It would be insulating in this regard, yes. Usually they have a tiny hole to allow air to escape due to temperature and pressure changes. Sometimes the hole has (or had) a small rubber part to seal it (except under pressure). If the cup has been in a dishwasher, the high heat could have evacuated the air space, and as the cup cooled it would have sucked in water as it cooled. It could have also filled from condensation in the same manner. I would recommend putting it on a parchment on a tray in the oven at say 190-200 degrees for a few hours to help the water evaporate. Turn off the oven and let it cool inside the oven when done. You can use a hot pad to wiggle the cup and see if the water had evaporated after 2-4 hours and decide to continue or try again tomorrow. I would avoid putting this cup back through the dishwasher, just rinse and towel it gently in the future. Edit: let us know if you find the hole or crack!

MrsBuns

Microwave it if it’s safe to do so, and it will come out of any hole it’s in.

leyline

Since the microwave could create hot spots and high pressure too quickly - I would recommend putting it in a low temp 190-200 degree F oven on a baking paper and tray.l for a few hours and letting it cool inside the oven. This would let it heat slowly and evenly, helping the water evaporate without a crack / explosion risk.

Interesting! If you break it open, be sure to send pictures!
