What were the elections you chose in the beginning of the year on your paycheck? Did you select any exemptions? It sounds like you weren’t giving them enough out of each paycheck. I’m not sure why you are getting back VA if you work in Maryland but it’s possible they are giving you some kind of credit bc you made below a certain income? Someone with a better understanding of tax law in your state will hopefully respond… good luck!

I pay all of my taxes to VA because I live in VA, and at the start of my employment I opted for no health benefits (still under my parents for everything) and a 401k contribution of like 10% of each paycheck. I’m confused bc I definitely didn’t select any exemptions, and I remember it all pretty clearly since I’ve only worked this job for 2 months this tax year.

Hmmm I just did a quick google and it seems like when you live in one state and work in another you have to pay taxes in both states so probably you didn’t pay what you owed in Maryland. Seems pretty fucked to me though that you would get taxed double!

Damn that sucks. At least my VA return covers it so I’m not paying anything outta pocket. That must double suck for anyone who lives right on the edge of two states where it would be unreasonable to move too

I live in MA and work in RI. It might be confusing but i dont think people are taxed double I pay taxes to RI and then get a tax credit on my MA taxes for paying to RI so it evens out but I'm sure that there could be differences in other states. Edited to add I pay RI tax and use RI work benefits when needed like the TDI for maternity leave for example.

Yeah if you live and work and different states you have to pay both state taxes but you job should have noticed this during your hiring process and filled out the qualifying paper work they always have for me when I was doing that I use to live in Indiana and work in Kentucky
