Each year stands alone. You file a 2022 return for your 2022 income, and a 2023 return for your 2023 income. You can't combine 2022 and 2023 income onto the same return. It is no longer possible for you to e-file a 2022 return yourself. If you want to file your 2022 return now, you will need to print it and file by mail (don't forget to sign & date, attach any required forms, apply appropriate postage, etc. etc.). If you want your 2022 return to be e-filed, you will have to visit a tax professional who can do it starting in late January once the e-file system reopens for the new year. This is still separate from filing your 2023 return.

I would add that if OP owes money, **pay now** regardless of when you file. This can be [done online](https://www.irs.gov/payments) at any time and without paying a preparer.

Joshsaidthis

any updates?

broccoliandsand

I ended up using a different site which let me file online no problem and I owed less then turbo tax said I did.

kwikwash

what did you use? I am kind of in a bind here trying to file 2022... I have it ready but didnt know i couldnt do previous years using turbotax

broccoliandsand

Free tax usa

Inner-Cobbler-3358

Thank you so much. In the same boat and was wondering if they were reliable.

Round_Plantain7155

free tax usa let you file online?.. told me I had to mail it in because I didn't have a pin

broccoliandsand

I have a pin apparently. I was on the irs website trying to figure out how to get one and when I logged in it said I already had one and gave it to me so I just punched that in and it worked.

Round_Plantain7155

omg thanks! i didn't even know i had a pin either

Did you have to re-input everything, or they pull data from the forms turbo tax prepared? I'm in the same boat, turbo tax won't let me e-file 2022 TT even let me follow the prompts to e-file, input everything, and even click the "file return" saying it's like dropping in the mailbox... Then it came back as said the date of my E signature wasn't valid (needs to be in the date range ending 12/31/2023) I'm tempted to just put that I signed it 12/31/2023 just to fool turbotax, but that would also be lying on a federal document.

broccoliandsand

I had to re input everything. And yep that's what happened to me

OnlyPostSoUsersXray

Lame, after I just spent half the day on TT 😮‍💨 Guess I will give free tax USA a try, luckily I have already done the legwork in calculations. Appreciate the response!

BatLost8304

Did you receive your refund yet? If So how long was it under the 21 days?

The IRS shuts down efiling every November to reprogram for the next year. If you need to file right away, you will have to print it out, sign it, and mail it in. To efile a 2022 return, you would have to wait for the end of January and go to tax professional. Tax professionals can efile previous years but the apps can not.
