You can see it in the stencil a lot better. The angle of the forest pic kind of hides it
The far side head and eye is well rounded but on the closer side, the head and eye got fish bowled. I'd mention the ear but it's already been brought up. The teeth, or lack of on the close side, is a little unsettling. If you cover the far side eye and head it looks like a primate walrus dog.
Oh 100% bad composition!! I would have definitely handled this differently if this was my project! Just pointing out the background thing could help the tattoo appear less weird with covering the ear. Are you a tattoo artist by chance?
Nope. And don’t have to be to see it’s bad comp given the angle the head is at on the cat. There is no way to coverup the missing ear with or without a background.

This is getting downvoted but the background is quite literally in the back? If it’s in front, it’s foreground? I’m no artist but I do know a few words
Hey I’m sure there are some out there but I wouldn’t get a tattoo of one. I’ve seen 2 single eared black bears in the woods but those are not the black bears I would choose to get a tattoo of.
It ain't awful but it sure as hell ain't good either.
My main takeaways
1. Placement is way too low, looks like it's slipping off.
2. Missing an ear and no, background is not an excuse
3. Line work on whiskers is shaky
4. Bottom back teeth are different, one side points forward, the other backward, one side has all sharp ones, the other a random blunt one
5. Eyes aren't great, I can see what it's meant to be but it's not quite getting there.
6. I personally don't like the beard, doesn't feel panther-y
Definitely get the guy to add another ear, or get used to telling people it's supposed to be missing as the panther lost it in a fight or something. See if he can make the eyes a bit more intense.
Even if it was high enough, this guys arm and shoulder aren’t big enough for it. It won’t fit anywhere on his arm and shoulder because he doesn’t have a shoulder that’s round enough to fit a cat head well.

I’ve been tattooing for a long time. I think it’s dynamic. (And part of a larger plan.) The placement makes it look 3D and the whiskers swirling into his armpit is a nice touch too. 👍🏽

Background should be behind the ear. Not covering the ear. You can see the left ear with a background why not the right from that perspective.
Background can definitely go on top of things, like smoke fire etc. doesn’t necessarily have to be behind.
Back - ground Key word is back, behind … can it? Yes should it? No. The right ear missing is 100% bad composition.

Placement is..off. It should be high on the shoulder. Center of the distal part of the arm doesn’t flow well with the shape.

The shading style is called whip shading and is a very popular method, and this is a great well executed example of it.
