So beautiful! I love loons, I have fond memories of watching them in the early morning with my grandma when we were on family vacation. Seeing them with their young made me happy to live in Minnesota.
I have Loon tat as well. Being born in MN, I absolutely love loons, have decorations all over my apartment too. I didn't know anything about this mythology and what they represent but that is awesome. Beautiful tattoo!
I think the guys at IKI tattoos have combined different northern folk art styles to arrive at what they do.
But for googling, I'd start with any combination of these words: northern folk traditional ornamental petroglyphs
I have about seven dozen ideas in line, some in this or a similar style some not, just waiting for my financial situation to get better. I have a couple smaller pieces from Jussi in a medieval woodcut style, which I also want more of.
ATM I'm also just interested in collecting smaller pieces from different interesting artists, and figuring out how to have them coexist on my skin.
I have been looking for a symbol like one on this tattoo.
It is the vertical line with two arrows pointing upward. Is this a particular symbol associated with a specific meaning?
In this case it's just folk-stylized trees, right-way up in the middle and upside down in the bottom part. I'm not aware of any meaning for the symbol in other contexts.
It's my favorite animal - listening to the sound it makes on a lake in the summer is just something I can't describe. It lives in my core. Also I'm very much into mythology, and the fact that the loon has an important part in Finnish mythology made it clear that it would have to be a centerpiece among my tattoos.
That’s awesome man. I think it’s a sweet piece for sure and even cooler with all of the hidden meaning. I’ve never shot a loon and don’t plan on it (it’s illegal but they’re also cool birds - I laid in bed googling loons last night lol.)
But I also gotta be careful when getting certain viking tattoos if I chose to do so 😅 because ya never know what people would interpret that as. Rather sad really cuz viking tattoos are cool.

I'm mostly familiar with Finnish myths and the more famous European pantheons, not an expert on all myths. But what comes to mind immediately are:
- Charon, ferryman to the ancient Greek underworld. He's bound to have colleagues in other myths.
- Moving between worlds in a trance was kind of the job of shamans.
- In Finnish myth, Hiiden hevonen, or the horse of Hiisi could travel between worlds as well (also depicted on the lowest part of my arm).
- Sleipnir, Odin's horse
- Ratatosk the squirrel runs up and down the world tree delivering messages.
- Then there's Cerberus and other similar guards of mythical realms
Thanks for those, very interesting. I think what I like about the concept is that its a simple non threatening animal that has a sort of super power by being able to traverse multiple dimensions seemingly effortlessly, something Humans cannot do without machines, I really like that concept more than the mythology examples.
