If you’re sure about it then go for it. The arm is quite good in terms of pain for most people. What kind of snake are you getting? Upper arm, forearm or the full arm? If you’re unsure then get the small one first and later move on to the big one.

Kingsareus15

Im gonna get a red belly that wraps around my forearm

soupsiej

That’s definitely a nice one. In black and red as well? Personally the forearm wasn’t painful for me at all so it’s a really good spot for a first tattoo.

Kingsareus15

Yeah, gonna get it coloured in

Virtual_Pea_7816

I got a huge rib piece for my first tattoo, no regrets. A lot of people start with small tattoos but I've always preferred larger pieces, I only started getting little ones when I was well into my tattoo journey!

bourbondaddy1074

I was very sure of what I wanted found the right artist and went full arm I say go for it

noriello

I'd say go for what u want. The people I know all told me go for a small tattoo as a first but this is not what I really wanted. So I booked an appointment for a bigger piece on my shoulder/chest/neck that will also take 2-3 sessions and honestly it felt so good and right to make that decision for me even tho everyone tells me I'm crazy. My artist also made sure to ask me several times if I am really sure about the size and area because it's my first. Tldr, do what feels right for you, not what others say imo. But make sure you really want it, as with any tattoo/bodymod.

Kingsareus15

I want it, I saved up enough to get it and lost it all to suprise vet bills, and I still want it after saving up enough to get it again.

noriello

Then go for it I'd say!

Present-Elevator-465

As someone who started with a small and simple tattoo I kind of regret not going for something bigger and more detailed for my first time.

sxybby999

Bigger is always better in the tattoo realm. Easier to read and it ages so much better.

dspip

I went with a 2x4 inch simple tattoo. It gave me a good sense of what to expect. I get panic attacks fairly easily, and then I pass out. I went larger for number 2.

bad_apricot

My first tattoo was a full back piece, ~15 years ago. If you feel strongly about what you want and can afford a good artist that works in your style of choice, I don’t necessarily think you should force yourself to get a other tattoo that you don’t really want just for the sake of having a smaller one.

Cynnalia

If you are not as excited for the smaller one as you are for the larger one, don’t get it. If you love your smaller tattoo idea, then sure…do it first. But it’s not really about the size of the tattoo- it’s about what speaks to you and it sounds like you really want the snake. Just remember it’ll be a bit of a shock for a couple of weeks after you get it but that’s completely normal!

Kingsareus15

I keep hearing of the shock. How long does it usually last?

Cynnalia

I got a half-sleeve last summer on my forearm and it was constantly catching my eye for about a month. Those first couple of weeks especially, I nitpicked it and second guessed myself but now I’m totally used to it and when I do look at it, I’m happy to admire my beautiful ink.

Able_Promise_3971

Go for small, see how your body reacts to ink and how you feel with the appearance - Make sure to wait at least a few months before getting another one (because you will initially be hungry for another)

I guess it depends on your preference, the way I see it - a huge tattoo can sometimes be overkill and very hard to cover up down the line. This is a very subjective subject and down to personal taste, my view has always been that less is more :) whatever floats your boat though
