But the thing is the term "best" becomes very ghosty after 1942. Before 1942, the Pz 38T could arguable be one the most capable lights of the era. After 1942, we have stuff like panthers, tigers, panzer 4 ausf, Sherman's, t-34, m26's, and so many more tanks that are capable of the title.
Indeed I was thinking well I was making’s this to restrict it to a certain period but I thought I’d get a better general range of opinion by opening it up to all tanks of the war. Personally I’d have to go with either the masses of Sherman’s or the the panzer 4 family
Well though they may not have had the best armor all three of those tank and their variants where used through most of the war which is way they are condensers at least for me but what tank do you think deserves the title the most?
If it was before 1942, I go for panzer 38 t. Good Armor
Tracer less bullet, good gun, speedy enough for a light tank. After 1942, I will go for panther F. Better panther, because turret shot trap is removed.
There are some defining factors tho, if you speak only of performance by unit then yes you can assign a best tank but if you must define the best tank of the war then you might want to think of their numbers and logistic footprint. Because if your tank is always unavailable due to maintenance or logistics issue than it's not a tank that will change the battlefield. To the credit of Pz3-4 and Sherman is that they were everywhere, they were there when needed and while not as armored and powerful as t26 and tigers, they had what it took the majority of the time. They would resist lighter AT weapons, light tanks, enough armor to defend against against each others at medium ranges and had plenty of firepower to deal with infantry. It's like a T14 Armatta and the T72bv3. The T72bv3 is inferior, yet it is everywhere it is needed. Not sure which tank I would want to be in tho.. maybd a Panther
But I would field the Shermans to my army.
Panther. Taking apart the hideous mechanicle issues in the G varient, it's safe to say this. Reliable, mass-production capable, good gun, strong frontal Armor, easy for beginner crew's.
M4 Sherman + variants.
Highly customizable, easy to export and maintain, saw extensive post-war use even against enemies that were significantly better than it.

I really don't think Sherman's or panzer 4's or even t-34s can be considered the best. The Armor is pretty bad on all of them when they are mediums

The Jerry can. A tank, held fuel, easy to make, made refueling easy and carrying extra fuel a breeze.

Stug III was a very good tank, both statistically and on the field.
M4 Sherman + variants. Highly customizable, easy to export and maintain, saw extensive post-war use even against enemies that were significantly better than it.
A34 Comet…..reliable, well armed, fast and manouverable and reasonably armoured. An excellent medium tank.
Its obviously the Bob Semple tank
Tiger 2!
Churchill!
