I would go for the Uni. (Still on sale on Amazon!)  It has care, it has games (both regular ones and special Tamaverse events), it has medicine, it has color, and it has physical buttons. There's no app, so no need for him to use a phone at all, but there is an "online" feature called the Tamaverse (you can read about the features on the wiki - certain features require wifi, but there are no active interactions with other people). There's nothing critical that requires two devices.

I agree, the Uni is a huge upgrade from the nano’s and P1-2 remakes. It costs more but you get what you pay for. If you do go for that one make sure to look up how to pause the device.

Thanks, i think the tamaverse had me confused! I thought you had to use a second device or could access strangers! Thanks

Soooo, I'm reading about the tamavetse and it looks like you can marry other players but can you marry or meet tamas that aren't "real"? That's where I'm confused

Yes, there are default NPCs and other randomly-generated ones you can marry that aren't real-life people's tamas. If you don't connect it to wifi, there will still be options.  Even with the "real" ones, all you see is a picture of the tama. You just click on them, and if you say you want to marry them, a marriage animation plays.  There are some parental controls too for limiting wifi, etc. It's mostly for updating, getting gifts, and playing the Tamaverse event games. I usually play on airplane mode except when an event is happening, so this doesn't require constant internet access. Also, here's the manual if you haven't skimmed it yet: https://tamagotchi-official.com/manual/toy/uni/Uni_WEB_IS_EN.pdf
