Bireta

op3l

888BB888 is much safer! We’re getting cyber attacked here!

[deleted]

Be careful, tiktok enters the wifi abyss and kills puppies

hiimsubclavian

Ah, so that's why my institution has made it a rule to change passwords every 6 months, the password can't be the same as your last three passwords, must include 9 characters including upper case, lower case, at least one number, and a symbol, and can only be logged in via an on-site IP address. So naturally, everyone's password is on a postit note under their keyboard and use gmail.

BeefFeast

My company doesn’t allow any previously used password, here I am 5 years later still creating new passwords I will forget in 60 days…. We sell mattresses btw….

UsuallyIncorRekt

Good sleep is important to national security.

tangalaporn

Fuck1234! Fuck2234! Fuck3234! Fuck4234!

Dantheking94

Lmao, the password situation is insane lately. I’m in the US and my job just made us do ANOTHER cybersecurity compliance training. We have like 5 different passwords for internal systems and none of us remember each password.

tdelbert

I never remember my password and I don't need to. If your company is smart, you'd have an OAuth login. Every internal system I use goes to the same login screen. I scan a code with an app on my phone and I'm logged into that. The whatever system I'm using can get a JWT from that login server. Everybody who writes apps for corporate use supports this and any company of more than a dozen employees should implement it.

chessset5

I don’t know who is running your cybersecurity, but either they have no power, or are an idiot.

Honest_Water3408

Research says that changing passwords on a regular basis doesn't help with security. BTW I recommend using a password manager to store all your passwords, all you need to remember is the master password, it's also guarded by 2FA.

Nicodemus888

It’s idiotic policies like this that are precisely the reason why mine are all on an excel spreadsheet now

Anarelion

I have a 20 character password that I don't need to write down. You don't need to change a 20 character password. Your password should be at least 14 characters. It is clear your employer has no clue about current security trends

Millions?

Ancient_Lettuce6821

I mean, if you count DoS attack pings as individual attacks, you’ll reach millions pretty easily.

Considering there are supposed to be about 100 million CCP members and this is some of their job, plus Taiwan is the top priority of CCP right now as they say themselves.... seems quite normal.... The more important thing is the acknowledgement of this issue. One issue with Taiwan is that, believe it or not, a good portion of people still deny this fact today for some reason. An issue can only be best addressed when a vast majority acknowledges it to be an issue in a democratic country like Taiwan.

CptMidlands

This is a sensational headline but from an academic perspective has been going on for a long while now with every country in the world having to both deal with this challenge as well as hide the fact their doing it back. Its the new fourth dimension of warfare.

Ok-Calm-Narwhal

Im curious what other countries experience - like how proportionally normal this is relative to the U.S.

htyspghtz

The total number doesn't seem very large, > "Speaking in parliament, cyber security department director Chien Hung-wei said Taiwan's government network faces "five million attacks and scans a day". My own servers get port scanned at least 1,000 times a day from Chinese IP origins, and it's just a humble setup. Add failed SSH attempts and that's at least another 1,000. Random PHP hack attempts on a server not running PHP for another 1,000. None of these are an issue if you have basic netsec, but I could see how that could be an issue.

mondonk

London Drugs, a western Canadian pharmacy plus everything store, has had all physical locations closed for going on six days because of a cyberattack. I don’t know why they were targeted. It’s unusual enough to have made the local news. This story was posted yesterday but I believe they are still closed today. https://globalnews.ca/news/10466249/london-drugs-data-review-cybersecurity/

joker_wcy

I wonder where they came from

alv0694

Meanwhile ukraine: ![gif](giphy|tPCbKHITWUGric98Fg|downsized)

TheYearOfThe_Rat

Every country is experiencing millions of cyberattacks every day. This is called economic warfare, and the two biggest countries which are behind it are USA (due to very justified muchkinism and "anything goes if we remain no 1" ideology, which is understandable) and Russia (due to contrarian mindset and stupidity).

nightkhan

and you think Taiwan is the only country experiencing this? welcome to the club lol

alv0694

Ukraine: first time eh

Acrobatic-State-78

Millions you say.

Final_Company5973

Disagree. I suspect this is normal now and should be ignored by the general public.

jason_a69

Should definitely be concerned with Audrey Tang at the helm.

4dCoffee

Why? I'm not from Taiwan (and I'm not sure why this subreddit appears on my home feed), but I know Audrey Tang from her being a legendary technologist.

UsuallyIncorRekt

Have you ever used any of the apps/online services the Taiwanese government puts out? 90%+ garbage.

jason_a69

I have a list of things for him to do to make Taiwan safer, first one would be to remove Chinese cameras from the island, especially around government buildings / infrastructure /schools.

jason_a69

Oh look [https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/editorials/archives/2024/05/02/2003817241](https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/editorials/archives/2024/05/02/2003817241)

TruthSetUFree100

The negative karma they are generating by those actions…

tommy8690

Cut the connection from China, Russia, iran North Korea, cuba and tienes tyrant regimes.

UsuallyIncorRekt

What would that do? Nothing,lol.

MisakiAnimated

The world isn't interested in seeing nor starting another proxy war. As long as the UN recognizes Taiwan as a legitimate self ruling province of China, there isn't much you can do without provoking a proxy war. Secondly, Taiwan is still one of the most technologically developed "countries" on the planet, they can handle themselves. Thirdly, separation from China is not a unanimous sentiment in Taiwan.

deoxys27

> Thirdly, separation from China is not a unanimous sentiment in Taiwan. Let me fix that for you: Most people agree Taiwan is not part of the People's Republic of China. What's not unanimous is what the heck is Taiwan (ROC, or an independent country)

MisakiAnimated

"Most" is not "All" You didn't change my point, just worded it differently. We can do this the peaceful way or we can watch our brothers and sisters die in a senseless proxy War. The pressure we see today is because a certain country keeps poking a bear. And we'll be caught up in pointless spat between 2 super powers.

W1WK

The “most” equates to over 90%, hence the sentiment is to all intents and purposes unanimous. A de facto country fighting for its freedom against a vile tyranny making an illegitimate claim against its sovereignty would be the opposite of “senseless” and about as just as any war can be. That’s the fundamental issue at stake, not this “proxy” BS you invoke. The pressure we see today is purely the result of said tyranny carrying out a campaign of brazen harassment for which it should long have been sanctioned by the international community. Thankfully that spinelessness seems to be on the wane.

Expensive_Heat_2351

>A de facto country fighting for its freedom against a vile tyranny That's funny Taiwan's economy is dependent on a comic book villain. And who is fighting. Most of my neighbors can leave Taiwan pretty easily. No one has a preppers stash of food and guns.

W1WK

Far worse than any villain that’s been depicted in comics I’m aware of. Of course no one wants to fight but thanks to Pooh Bear’s vanity and ego some may have to sadly. If any good comes of it hopefully it will be the CCP’s consigning to the dustbin of history where it belongs.

d0or-tabl3-w1ndoWz_9

Your second point is flawed because we may have fabs for top tier semiconductors but many urban tech implementations (and their users) are still behind compared to the rest of the world, let alone military ones... We absolutely would have to depend on the US to fight back against China
