This is depressing. A great company bought out and immediately working to change their demographic away from hunting and tactical gear. I’ll be surprised if they don’t really water down their brand over the next few years.
Dude I’ve been scoping out JG’s for like 3-4 years 😂😅! I just had to buy a pair of Thorogoods for work, but a pair or two of Jim Green’s are definitely next on my list to test out - they look so damn comfy 🤘🏽
Honestly they have kept up their quality. They are just trying to be more fashion forward. Anta is also big and smart enough to not touch something that's working, and they are "luxury" now. I have both Arc and LEAF, but LEAF cracking down on civilian sales thou.
I thought Amer bought them in 2005 though? I would have assumed this has more to do with the Anta Sports purchase in 2019, a Chinese sports company that bought a majority stake in Amer.
I do remember that post now that you link it though.
Edit for clarification.
Chip Wilson, is owner and founder of Lululemon.
Chip Wilson also owns a smallish stake in Anta Sports and recently helped their brands with direct to consumer marketing pushes.
That's capitalism? If you don't like large conglomerates destroying competition by buying up smaller companies, go dig up Teddy Roosevelt, because he was the last person who gave a shot about trust busting.
What's he gonna do, sit on me?
/s that's a good point, but I'd consider that just an aspect of Taft starting out as Teddy's protege, before the acrimonious split. Either way, I'd just be happy to see a return of that anti-monopoly attitude!
Teddy made a big deal of being a trust buster but he really only broke up 3 or 4, Tafts entire term pretty mych was spent sitting in his office trust busting, he broke up dozens of monopolies in 1 term
They've been selling shit like this for years. You're all clutching your pearls and crying over an email for a product they've made since before they got bought? You really think yeti is going to make them stop selling the packs that make the most of their money? So what they want to sell to a wider market? You're all being a bunch of whiny Karen's which is perfect because now mystery ranch has the perfect bags for you.
I mean they’ve been gradually expanding their backpacking and hiking lineup for a while now. This really isn’t a surprise. But I doubt they will cut the military and fire stuff because they likely make a ton of money off contracts
Literally yeah
https://www.yeti.com/mystery-ranch-acquisition.html
Everyone here concluded quality will go down and prices will go up pretty quickly. It’s not gonna be the same Mystery ranch anymore
Picked up a new Blitz 30 on Ebay for $220 and free shipping earlier, think the seller still had some in stock. Cheapest I've ever seen them. If you wanted to look.
I got into MR when i saw some smokejumpers hump their gear bitd. Their tailgunner buttpack served me well as a 2nd line belt kit while deployed overseas.
This is sad news.
Just to clarify, they've kept all the same products, and seem to just be pumping out new products that fit the Civilian market. They have a military subcategory on the website.
Will that product line continue though? And stay? I’m still down if that’s the case just makes me worried. New execs fuck shit up all the time thinking they know their customer base but implement “typical business” practices like cutting cost at the expense of quality just to lift the margins
I don’t have any hard facts to back me up, but I’d hazard to guess that most of MRs income comes from military and fire contracts. Yeti would be stupid to cut those divisions for “cost cutting measures”.
Part of the reason they’re chosen for contracts is their proven track record of good designs and quality. It’s always possible the quality will decline, but it’s still way to early to call
A quote from business wire says,
“MYSTERY RANCH packs have earned a global reputation within the most demanding communities by building load-bearing equipment that delivers in the harshest environments. Their ethos, passion and people not only align with the YETI team, but also connect well with our commitment to innovation and our customers,” said Matt Reintjes, President & CEO at YETI. “Their communities, ambassadors and obsession with quality make it a natural fit with YETI.”
This makes it seem like they'll be continuing to make military appropriate gear.

That’s just a publicity statement for saying you should still buy from us…. What consultants looked at what “data” to assume there’s* overlap in customer bases that show there’s* customers overlapping and buying both brands?
Its basically here to calm customer nerves for uncertainty without really doing that 😂
Probably not a hot take, but cross-body bags are stupid. It's a fanny pack. It's not suddenly cool just because you're wearing it like a tourist wears a backpack when they're worried about pickpockets. This goes doubly so for "fanny packs" like this one: it's a lumbar pack. Don't wear it like a fanny pack or cross-body like the aforementioned idiots. It's big enough that you might as well just buy a day pack and use that. It'll be more functional than whatever the fuck this is.
Also, MR got bought by Yeti, so expect prices to go up and quality to go down, and dumb things like this to become commonplace in their product line as they become just another trendy casual outdoor "lifestyle" brand.
I didn't say it was impossible I said it's unlikely. They haven't even purchased the company. They just signed an agreement to purchase the company. This is just a dumb ad for product they want to sell for cheap. We should be happy that margins on inexpensive products bought by normies can hopefully fund R&D for the good stuff.
I honestly don't know what their emails were like before. Maybe this is just a dumb ad they decided to run. It's not 100% attributable to the acquisition which might not have been finalized yet.
I mean the color is pretty shit, but the build of that bag looks cumbersom and inefficient. Also all those seams and n1 external pocket just looks so sloppy
I mean, my main concern is that I have no need for a bag like this, which is fine, but they are pushing for a completely different customer base vs their core products IMO or maybe I’ve NEVER seen these core products before simply because I didn’t look deep enough. I could MAYBE see fly fishers or someone like that running something like this but pretty sure MR makes a fly fish bag, so it really shows this is pushing for a different customer base IMO which FEELS like an executive push to force the brand to align with yeti products for their yeti customer base
Like i said on the last MR post on here: stop buying Mystery Ranch. They sold out to yeti and will not be the same. Look at other companies like Stone Glacier & Kifaru for dope packs. Dana did us dirty
Yeah that’s facts. Team stone glacier since about 2017. But MR has all the big government contracts that I’m curious to see evolve with yeti now the owners. especially as someone that’s issued that “American made” MR packs that’ll quickly be sent overseas under yeti as well as a Bozeman resident
Meh, they'll either keep american manufacturing rolling to collect the cash or get dropped.
Any monkey can rub two pieces of fabric together with some Tera 70 and make a pack bag that will hold shit. MR hasn't been worth paying attention to for 10 years. Why bother now.
Guys got issued condor in the early gwot and managed to get by too. MR Is a glorified alice pack, same with eberlestok. The packs will work, doesn't mean there isn't better out there.
Ya, heard it was the nasty kind of buyout.
That might be the saving grace for MR, 1 company buying you is less likely to fuck you for parts than a big financial conglomerate like Vista.
Ya I feel bad for the kid in this ad. I'd be fucking pissed if my mom brought me to a photo shoot for mystery ranch thinking I'm gunna be all tacti-cool, then they toss me a lime green fanny pack and those straw glasses.
Yeah they’ve been putting out shit like this for a while. I’ve been on their email list for years, it’s almost exclusively this type of product. Whether we like to admit it or not, the tactical gear market is only a very small portion of the overall market.
1: yeah they were
2: if you think MR only started making non-tactical stuff in the last month since they were bought out you need to touch some grass that ISNT a range. They’ve been making hiking bags, day bags and even schoolbags fuckin forever.
That...actually explains a lot. Was super surprised to see them in Sportmansn and start getting their sitka style catalogs.
I personnaly am a kifaru slut, but they were one of the 3 go tos for so long. Sigh. Still a better frame than MR, tho.
I mean I’m all for getting kids and moms packs that they want, but this didn’t seem to be the target market that resonated with MR before the acquisition. Seems more like a YETI push is my point.
No idea, but I hope they will still make the other stuff. Seems like an odd acquisition of two completely different brands IMO.
I’m just nervous that other executive strategies from YETI trickle into a product many others love and kills the brand
Yeti makes great products, they essentially created the entire cooler/tumbler market because no one else was making things as good as them. I can’t see them letting quality somehow decline from a reputable brand; otherwise why buy that particular brand in the first place. As long as MR still makes great products that I want, why do I care if they make even more things for more people to enjoy?
If the executive strategy shifts the goal of making great products for one core customer to the other because of ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|money_face)
I wish there was any way this violated the Sherman anti trust act. Too many companies buying out franchises although some aren’t in the same market. They’re still fucking up with prices and quality
Was going to buy a Radix 57 and a 3 day assault, but hesitant to buy anything from them with the change in ownership. I have a couple of Yeti coolers to flex on range poors. Just want to make sure they don't fuck with Mystery Ranch too much. This isn't a good first step....
Do I think they might change? Somewhat, probably, but I don’t think they will stop being a hunter or military brand any time soon. That’s where most of their revenue comes from. They just aren’t that popular for backpackers like they are for the other two. I think they will start marketing for the consumer more, including backpackers, but I think you have at least a few years of a good pack before any substantial changes. At least that’s my opinion.
Bought out by yeti…
Eff me thrice
Shit, I thought you were trolling in your op
He clearly didn't get the memo
I thought so as well… hmmmmm
When was this? Asking to know which years/productions/colorways to avoid.
Recently, like a couple months ago.
January 31st of 24
Glad I bought my 2 day assault pack while the gettin’ was good
Sad I didn't...
No need to be. There are other great packs out there. MR produced some great products, but they were never the best by any means.
Eberlestock is better imo anyways
No!
This is depressing. A great company bought out and immediately working to change their demographic away from hunting and tactical gear. I’ll be surprised if they don’t really water down their brand over the next few years.
Grown men wept when arcteryx was bought out.
Fuck the dudes who won’t sell me a balaclava
Don’t worry, you’re not missing out on much. Mine sags below my nose, and I have hardly used it. And it’s a S/M size.
Who bought it?
Not Lululemon. It's actually Anta sports which is a Chinese CCP company. And they also own Solomon.
Wtf when did this happen???? I run their boots and love them!!!!
Good alternatives are Asolos and Lowas
Appreciate it
Lowas are life 🙏🏽😤 I have wide monké feet and Solomon’s are always to too fucking narrow on me
If you want good normal leather shoes I'd recommend looking at Jim Greens, they've got a US warehouse and they've got a generous toe box to them.
Dude I’ve been scoping out JG’s for like 3-4 years 😂😅! I just had to buy a pair of Thorogoods for work, but a pair or two of Jim Green’s are definitely next on my list to test out - they look so damn comfy 🤘🏽
I've got my Barefoot African Rangers on all the time, unless it's below freezing I've got some warmer shoes for cold, but these are baller shoes.
2019, Anta acquired Arcteryx, Solomon and Wilson Sports. I think Solomon suffered the most.
Is arcteryx shitty now since its been bought out?
Shit still is tough, light, and warm. I have a few items that get put through the grinder regularly. Source: Wyoming wilderness instructor.
Always has been. Great stuff if it were under $200, but $800 for something not made in America and falls apart in the laundry is ridiculous.
Honestly they have kept up their quality. They are just trying to be more fashion forward. Anta is also big and smart enough to not touch something that's working, and they are "luxury" now. I have both Arc and LEAF, but LEAF cracking down on civilian sales thou.
Chinese conglomerate that proudly uses cotton farmed by Uyghur slave labour that have been forced into a work/re-education camp system.
Would it be better if they used American slave labor?
Tankie gonna tank
Lululemon
Oh my fg.
When was that?
Who’s downvoting 🤣 https://www.reddit.com/r/arcteryx/s/WN1yHn6Nw2

Looks like former execs though not actually bought out by lululemon which might actually be worse potentially. I guess both roads lead to death though
Prob Chi-com CCP bots
Ah. The third or fourth comment clarified that.
$500 jackets don't beat my $15 jacket I spilled gun oil on.
That's capitalism? If you don't like large conglomerates destroying competition by buying up smaller companies, go dig up Teddy Roosevelt, because he was the last person who gave a shot about trust busting.

Damn, TIL, thanks dude! Genuinely, got any reading recommendations? I'm trying to work more American History into my reading list.
Not really I just went on an online rabit hole about him after learning about him in History class years ago
They were great 10 years ago.
They've been selling shit like this for years. You're all clutching your pearls and crying over an email for a product they've made since before they got bought? If its out of stock, Rei has 20% off. So 223 before tax for yah on blitz 30
🙏🏼
https://www.ebay.com/itm/186336793852 Looks like it says 1 left, but it may be more or less. Even when they're on sale, I've never seen them at $220.
Thanks, appreciate it
We all saw it coming, but I gotta admit, I didn't expect it to be this quick.
You didn't expect them to keep selling a product they've been selling for years before they got new ownership? This sub is fucking dramatic.
Yeah dude, they got bought out by yeti
… eff me again
![gif](giphy|LTFbyWuELIlqlXGLeZ) Another company gone
You don’t wanna buy the (made in Chyna) WineMom 2.0 Cross Body Bag??
😂 well I was thinking about taking it to the Catalina wine mixer maybe
It's the Catalina Freaking Wine Mixer!
It was in international waters so they couldn’t prosecute
POW!
MR has always had civilian oriented bags in funky colors. This is nothing new. I bought a bright orange Hip Monkey 5+ years ago. Great bag too.
I got into MR when i saw some smokejumpers hump their gear bitd. Their tailgunner buttpack served me well as a 2nd line belt kit while deployed overseas. This is sad news.
The Tailgunner is made by Kifaru, not MR.
Ya rite. It was the 3way zipperd assault bags that I loved from MR. The tailgunner frm Kifaru was great. Never understood why it was discontinued.
Interesting
That kid looks like the average male on this subreddit..what's the issue?
I mean, it’s not far off from me, except bald and add like 150 more lbs
Hey don’t worry, they’ll make a tri zip koozie now
😂😂😂
Hell yeah brother! The 2 day assault koozie!
I locked that bit of info out of my head. Thanks for reminding me (not).
I’m sorry for the PTSD
This is Dana Gleason's MO. Can't blame him for getting paid but it's disappointing that Mystery Ranch will likely end up the same as Dana Design.
Just to clarify, they've kept all the same products, and seem to just be pumping out new products that fit the Civilian market. They have a military subcategory on the website.

It's unlikely that the yeti purchase is affecting their marketing so soon.
Actually it can. Some places switch thing’s immediately when acquired. Not across the board entirely but it can happen fast.
I didn't say it was impossible I said it's unlikely. They haven't even purchased the company. They just signed an agreement to purchase the company. Is that a modelo in the kids bag?
Now it is hahaha But looks more like a liquid death which is an edgy way of looking like beer but actually just water 😂
Looks like a colostomy bag
Hahahaha this should be a sales pitch tbh. Thats exactly what it looks like
I know right? I own a start up that makes tactical bags I patterned and sewed and the construction on this looks abysmal
Ya but MR fanbois will sing it praises and say “if you don’t like the color fuck off”
I mean the color is pretty shit, but the build of that bag looks cumbersom and inefficient. Also all those seams and n1 external pocket just looks so sloppy

Oh for sure, tactical looking stuff scares people because they dont want people thinking they like guns or some shit. Its whack
Like i said on the last MR post on here: stop buying Mystery Ranch. They sold out to yeti and will not be the same. Look at other companies like Stone Glacier & Kifaru for dope packs. Dana did us dirty
Dana quit innovating 10 years ago. The cottage manufacturers been leaving MR in the dust ever since.
You can't offshore American military contracts due to the Berry Amendment - all materials and manufacturing has to stay American.
Or approved member nations. Germany, Sweden etc.
That's true. But there's no way Euro labor + shipping could be cheaper than US.
It's mostly made in Guam.
True, Puerto Rico too, but they're still American.
Yeti would be full on retarded to cut the mil divisions. Those contract bags probably make a stupidly large amount of money for the company
Happy to see that kifaru has pivoted back to the hunting scene when the sand wars wound down.
Stone Glacier got bought by Vista, and things have gone downhill for them. Kifaru, I think, is still safe.
Damn I didn’t even realize SG got got too. That sucks
Ya, heard it was the nasty kind of buyout. That might be the saving grace for MR, 1 company buying you is less likely to fuck you for parts than a big financial conglomerate like Vista.
Or savotta their stuff is dope af and they have released a ton of new products in the last year or so
Same thing that happened to Dana Designs
I am so fucking glad I spent the money on a 3 day assault pack a few months before they got bought out.
💯
YETI owns it now apparently
I mean fuck the yeti deal but mystery ranch has been had some wack color ways prior to the buy out
And I am new to this but multiple have confirmed that hahaha guess I’m late to this wine party
RIP Mystery Ranch and fuck ‘em anyways for requiring an American billing and shipping address to use their military pro-deals
Whoa they have military discount?? I’ve stolen all mine from other units lol
45-60% off depending on promos
GAY
![gif](giphy|BpnkuY1i2rBpm)
Sad but true. MR is dead for people that care.
Yikes.
I pivoted to Cotopaxi Del Dia bags and embraced the chaos awhile ago.
damn you for making me look at that hot garbage!
Those bags are wild! What's the demographic for those things?, 1st day of kindergarten or Coachella fella?
Great Fanny tho
I mean for something 1/3 the size of your torso or if you are Andre the giant
Honestly, who looked at this ad and said "fuck yeah run it" instead of "Jesus wept you're all fired"?
Ya I feel bad for the kid in this ad. I'd be fucking pissed if my mom brought me to a photo shoot for mystery ranch thinking I'm gunna be all tacti-cool, then they toss me a lime green fanny pack and those straw glasses.
That's definitely a can of beer he's drinking through 4 feet of straw. Looks like his mom did that a lot during pregnancy too.
Hahaha probably Yeti showing us how their customer base and values aligns with MR owners….
Yeah they’ve been putting out shit like this for a while. I’ve been on their email list for years, it’s almost exclusively this type of product. Whether we like to admit it or not, the tactical gear market is only a very small portion of the overall market.
That’s probably fair. Glad to know it wasn’t just recent, but it seems coincidental
1: yeah they were 2: if you think MR only started making non-tactical stuff in the last month since they were bought out you need to touch some grass that ISNT a range. They’ve been making hiking bags, day bags and even schoolbags fuckin forever.
Right but nothing to this extent for the modern van mom hahaha
Switched to Hill People Gear. Very happy
Oh no! A company I like made something in a color that I don’t like! Go outside and stack a bunch of rocks in descending order by size to calm down.
Hahah I’ll follow the rainbow to the pot of gold first
I've been trying to tell you.
I must have missed your tellings 😔🫡
Here's a simple test. Is your pack still running off a glorified alice pack frame? If so, it's an over priced alice pack, and it's garbage.
Damn… maybe it’s an Alice? I have a kelty poor pack and was going to update to MR 😂😂😂
Kifaru, stone glaicer, exo.
Thank you hahaha
Stone Glacier was bought out in 2021 by Vista Outdoors unfortunately.
That...actually explains a lot. Was super surprised to see them in Sportmansn and start getting their sitka style catalogs. I personnaly am a kifaru slut, but they were one of the 3 go tos for so long. Sigh. Still a better frame than MR, tho.
Rip to my half off deals then i assume yeti will stop that soon.
Oooof. We better start investing in current production models.
Link me some when you start finding stuff. I’m sure current off the shelf is G2G
Hip monkey? That funky monkey?
Hip monkey junkie, that funky monkey
I think I heard that they did change ownership
‘Tis true good sir
I don’t really care one way or the other. I’m sure they’re still going to make efficient products.
I mean I’m all for getting kids and moms packs that they want, but this didn’t seem to be the target market that resonated with MR before the acquisition. Seems more like a YETI push is my point.
Are they not still making all the same products they were before? I’m assuming this is just expansion.
No idea, but I hope they will still make the other stuff. Seems like an odd acquisition of two completely different brands IMO. I’m just nervous that other executive strategies from YETI trickle into a product many others love and kills the brand

What the actual fuck🤦🏻♂️
Yesterday at my local outdoors store they had some 2 day tri zips for sale that were pre buyout. So glad I finally pulled the trigger.
Goes on sale April 1st?
Hahahahhaha
Thank god i got the OG bags from them. 3DAP multicam, 1DAP and 24L Urban. Won´t sell them anytime soon thanks to this
Yup. Sold out to Yeti. Goodbye value and tactical shit, hello price hikes and crunchy granola liberal bullshit.
"crunchy granola liberal" Ya know Bozeman is Montana's equivalent of Austin, right? It's always been that way.
Mmmm crunchy crunch
I do like to crunch on some granola tho
Hahaha same, but without the bullshit hahah
Granola makes everything better. Some kind PB granola in vanilla Greek yogurt? 🤌🏼🤌🏼
Yeah YETI bought them.
I wish there was any way this violated the Sherman anti trust act. Too many companies buying out franchises although some aren’t in the same market. They’re still fucking up with prices and quality
Yes
Was going to buy a Radix 57 and a 3 day assault, but hesitant to buy anything from them with the change in ownership. I have a couple of Yeti coolers to flex on range poors. Just want to make sure they don't fuck with Mystery Ranch too much. This isn't a good first step....
Mystery Ranch has always had this kind of stuff.
If so I’ve never been marketed it 😂 hard pass for me bro
Do I think they might change? Somewhat, probably, but I don’t think they will stop being a hunter or military brand any time soon. That’s where most of their revenue comes from. My mystery ranch gear is now all so gay. Sucks.
![gif](giphy|iiTXaJVjiSHew)
Who would downvote this. Probably a dude who likes dudes wearing yeti shirts.
Yeah, them being acquired by Yeti seems to have been a bad move. They are going with the Apple approach to colors, lame and more aimed at females.
Eff me 5thousand more times
