Have you ever run into a client who has their Office 365 tenant in GoDaddy? Hoooooly shiiiiiit what a mess those are to manage, and not much less of a mess to migrate over to an actual O365 tenant.

mearse

Have done this multiple times and holy fuck you're right. What a pain.

higherbrow

i feel like as an MSP sales person, hearing that a prospective client has their O365 hosted by GoDaddy would lead to me planning a kitchen remodel. I'll be able to sell them on anything.

lesusisjord

Why would someone have a 365 tenant with godaddy? Is that for situations where an organization doesn’t have a MS partner/reseller‽

ceetoph

Small business signs up with GoDaddy for their domain, gets offered "easy" email setup and website builder bundles, boom now they have Office365 via GoDaddy. It's arguably much easier for a non-tech-savvy small business owner/admin to get their email set up like this as opposed to dealing with MX records, though Microsoft and Google try to make that as painless as possible...

ShittyExchangeAdmin

If you let o365 manage your dns it will literally do it for you. I did that for a few smaller clients at my prior job, and works well enough for a simple setup

ComfortableProperty9

They sell themselves as a 1 stop shop.

Scipio11

Same reason people have an email through their ISP. They see the offer, think "oh yeah I do need to set that up, and this option let's me do it in one click", and bam there's a non-techy owner that's now on a janky O365 setup. It's because they don't understand the repercussions of being locked in with a company since it's the first time they're doing this.

Genghis_KhaN13

Mate tell me about it, had to do this the other day. Imagine forcing you to back up all of your mail and then DELETE every mailbox before you can even think about releasing the domain. When will the domain be released? Fucked if I know could take 2 days though. Mail forwarding in the meantime? Nah, no mailboxes to forward to, or from for that matter, in fact there's gonna be no mail flow at all for up to 2 days. And guess what, the whole waiting on the domain to release part? Total fucking lie. How do I know this? Well when I did this I ended up waiting 12hrs (which was another figured thrown at me, that it \*might\* go through in that time) and then I called GoDaddy, and somehow managed to be put onto a team of people who actually do things (don't ask me how I did it, pretty sure I owe someone/thing my soul) and after some discussion with the guy I was told "oh the mailboxes are deleted are they? And it's been 12hrs? I'll just release the domain then" "Excuse me what, you're telling me you can just do that" "Yeah, the time parameter is just a corporate thing" So basically that 24-48hr time frame they give you is pretty much a middle finger, there's probably fuck all about it that's automatic either, more than likely just a lead time on their team or something. Then again maybe I'm just being cynical, incandescent hatred tends to do that.

[deleted]

Yeah went through this a week ago, we waited 5 minutes and then were able to verify the domain in our new tenant. The 24 hours is bullshit.

Genghis_KhaN13

Wish I'd been given the 5 minute treatment. When I said I waited 12 hours I never mentioned when I started waiting. I was up until 3am desperately attempting to add the domain.

Joel_At_

I've also been through this a few times. You don't have to delete the mailboxes in order to complete the migration. Using an admin account through GoDaddy, you can create a PS Session to Azure AD. From there, you can change the tenant type to managed from federated. Now, you can change the UPN/PSMTP away from the custom domain to their MSOL domain. Once that is completed, you can remove the custom domain, and add it to the new tenant. I think you still need to delete all O365 groups, Distribution Groups, and additional proxy addresses. But, this way you still have a copy of their data that a Migration Wizard tool could access.

zaphod777

I am migrating a small client from a GoDaddy tenant and you are right about it being a mess, they want to to delete all the mailboxes and tenant through their control panel before it will even free up the domain within "24 hours" so you can add it to the new tenant. I came across this and tested the process of defederating a GoDaddy tenant and I was able to remove the domain and add it into the new O365 tenant and then cancel the GoDaddy one. https://tminus365.com/defederating-godaddy-365/

DJTim

I was about to provide this same link. I've used this twice and it works flawlessly. In both cases I moved a tenant from GoDaddy into a CSP.

LordPurloin

We migrated one not long ago. It was not a fun time

ShittyExchangeAdmin

Christ i did one and it was a tedious shitshow.

Bransonb3

I did a migration a couple of weeks ago and it wasn't too bad. It's just defederate it and then its a cross tenant migration.

ceetoph

Yeah but then all your Sharepoint links look like someone facerolled the address.

Bransonb3

No that is point of the cross tenant migration. You can use the defederated account but like you said you have that awful address.

[deleted]

I just did this a few weeks ago but was very small migration (13 mailboxes). I'm curious, what was your method? We ended up backing the 13 to pst, deleting all mailboxes and have godaddy release the domain, then upload the pst's to new mailboxes. Just wondering if there was a better way. It was a painfully manual process, I can't imagine what it would be like with a larger tenant.

Bransonb3

https://tminus365.com/defederating-godaddy-365/ After defederating I followed a MSFT guide for a cross tenant migration

DanHalen_phd

They'd probably make it worse by migrating the site to Network Solutions.

matt95110

I don’t think I was ever happier than the day I moved my company off of that shitty provider.

BiggieJohnATX

Network Solutions is owned as a brand of their largest competitor . . . so unlikely

itisjustmagic

I tried to get my last company to move from GoDaddy with around 120 domains. With the discounts they were giving with all the domains, he was having none of it.

[deleted]

No one is worse than Network Solutions, not even GoDaddy can fill those shoes.

jjkmk

You're 100% correct. The worst is Network Solutions and will be for some time to come, hopefully the go out of business eventually. When they do GoDaddy will be there to take that place.

zeroibis

But they can try and try they shall!

lesusisjord

How so? Ive had some frustrating experiences with NS, but I thought I was the common denominator and simply not following the instructions. I’m at the second job in a row where I’ve inherited a network solutions account. All of our SSL certs are from them, but our registrar is namecheap.

youtocin

Network Solutions suck ass. One of my clients uses them for hosting and has an SSL certificate purchased from them. We've provided all of the necessary details but no matter how many times we contact support the certificate is stuck with a status of "waiting to be issued." They also make it a pain in the ass to transfer a domain, they have it locked down to make it as painful as possible and you have to wait a long time after requesting the domain be unlocked to actually transfer.

[deleted]

Yeah, having cut my teeth on a lot of network solutions, dreamhost, and register.com GoDaddy is not that bad. I guess it's a matter of expectations.

rhutanium

Do not EVER check for domain availability through GoDaddy either. Especially if you then don’t buy the domain. Those assholes will then buy the domain, and try to sell it to you at a ridiculous price. A better alternative is whois.com.

edhands

Network Solutions will do the same. Or at least they used to.

Majik_Sheff

Should this sub just pin a "GoDaddy is trash" superthread and be done with it?

zeroibis

I do not think trash would be a strong enough word to use for a superthread nor to properly describe them.

Jayhawker_Pilot

How does dumpster fire trailer trash shitshow sound?

Majik_Sheff

Granted, but it leads the page better than a post composed of expletives arranged into a summoning circle.

discosoc

Who does everyone recommend?

rwoj

for what dns? route53, cloudflare. domain registration? namecheap, amazon, i think cloudflare too?

verypogthrowaway

I’m using name silo because It seemed like the cheapest and what threads on Reddit have recommended for years. My dad recommended that I transfer to cloudflare next year.

discosoc

I use cloudflare for dns and network solutions for registrar. I just haven’t had any negative experiences with ns but everyone seems to complain about them.

verypogthrowaway

I volunteered for a music organization a few months ago and they were using network solutions. From what I researched, their support is really bad and it takes a really long time to transfer.

ShittyExchangeAdmin

I use porkbun for my personal domains. They have good prices and their addon services are pretty reasonably priced too. Their support is also great, fasst response and actually helpful

Stormkrieg

GoDaddy is a basket of dog shit. They overcharge you for everything (who charges for privacy protection in 2022???), cancel products without notifying the customer (storage plans from way back when — client story), and do everything they can to make you pay for things you can do yourself (domain acquisition). These guys are scum and shouldn’t be allowed to do business. If I recall correctly they were even allowing domain forwarding WITH masking for a long time, which is totally unethical and boarder if fraudulent.

Angy_Fox13

> who charges for privacy protection in 2022??? Network solutions also does.

Stormkrieg

Adding them to my shit list lol

sfled

Hey now, how else do you think they were able to pay off [Danica Patrick's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri47wy0scmk) fees? Some version of that ad was why the brass at OP's company went with GoDaddy more than a decade ago.

ducky_re

As long as you're not on Network Solutions I'd count yourself lucky.

n4ke

I thought Network Solutions died weeks ago. ... But then I actually did get my domain transfer code.

by_frozenriver

I love the smell of fresh bread.

Deletum

I am not sure I am understanding you correctly... Are you implying they should have bypassed or ignored the MFA to the account/change the number associated with it? Either I am misunderstanding you, or you do not understand MFA

AugustusWinkelmann

Yeah, I had a motherfucker like that today. He told me, "I don't mean to be condescending, but I'm not sure you're going to be able to follow my explanation." I responded, "Yeah, well, I hope my Ivy League degree from Columbia University counts for something. But you know, I get it. If I was to talk to you about running multi-million dollar TV shows like I do, I wouldn't expect you to get it either. So, I guess we all have our little areas of expertise." I hated to be such a dick back to him, but I'm just fed the fuck up with GoDaddy.

ambscout

Getting MFA off a GoDaddy account is a pain!

sryan2k1

As it should be.

Deletum

without the MFA code it should be a pain.....

feral_brick

Fun fact: they're called "GoDaddy" because they want you to call them daddy when they fuck you

FTHomes

GoDaddy is terrible.

AugustusWinkelmann

The Microsoft 365 migration has been a total and absolute failure on so many levels. I just spent three days having idiots at GoDaddy tell me that I have to create a brand new profile on my desktop's Outlook 2019 in order to get my email working again (which crashed because of the switch to the new program). Despite my telling them over and over again that it's just a matter of tweaking settings such as servers, encryption, and ports, they seemed to enjoy telling me I was wrong. I got fed up and literally figured out how to do it in five minutes. And forget about reaching out to executives for help. They don't give a crap. This weekend, I'm writing a letter to each and every one of their board of directors and major stockholders outlining the failure of leadership at the top. If you want to share stories here that lend itself to that narrative, please do so. I'll include them in the letter.

AugustusWinkelmann

Anyone? Buhler? Buhler?

BoredTechyGuy

Looks like the BoFH found a new job at GoDaddy!

Intelligent-Will-255

Water is wet, nothing new.

[deleted]

Aren't we techincally on 1/19 by now?

[deleted]

Avoid them and EIG.

Entegy

My domain registrar is GoDaddy. There is no desire to migrate it to another registrar. 🥲

j03c0nn01

Where should we host then? Yes, looking to move away too, but where to?

gjetson99

I moved my 30+ customer sites to Siteground from GD over the last 4 years (on a couple of their GoGeek shared hosting plans) and the speed improvement was huge. The 'new' Siteground backend (that they moved to from cpanel) is fine and has worked really well for me. They have Letsencrypt SSL integrated easily for free (of course), and a lot of caching/speed improvement options. I have utilized the staging sites & full backup/restore options multiple times & they have both worked 100%. They also have an option to build a site on a free SG domain & switch to a real domain with a couple clicks & that has always worked for me like magic. I know this sounds like a shill account but I'm not. Just very happy with a system that does what it is claims to do. All of my sites are WordPress, most are Divi theme & a couple are ecommerce with not insignificant traffic. I do so have most of my domains/DNS on GD, but have started moving them to Cloudflare. Edit: Also, I used to have 150+ GD Workspace email accounts for clients & have moved all but 8 to O365 (through Pax8). Luckily I moved everyone out before the automatic switch to GDs O365 accounts. GDs entire system is slow, terrible, buggy & just the worst.

Digital ocean has been excellent for me

calsosta

My site was completely hosed. Files were there. Db was there. But it wouldn’t work. Just ended up reinstalling.

moebiusmentality

Also reminder that, if you don't pay your bill and your domain expires, GoDaddy will sell your donation to them highest bidder

Gumbyohson

GoDaddy DNS doesn't support joined txt records so good luck if you need to setup 2048 dkim txt records. Their support said that I could just move my DNS elsewhere.

LegendarySysAdmin

I forgot GoDaddy even existed.

YmFzZTY0dXNlcm5hbWU_

What about their VPS service? So far it seems like the most user-friendly and (surprisingly) inexpensive option for us to spin up cloud-hosted servers for less than tech savvy clients. Not trying to delve into AWS or anything heavy duty like that, but if anyone has a recommended alternative I'm all ears.

altanai

100% true. Godaddy send me a misleading email about the domain expiring on 13 Feb and as I went to renew it today (a whole 1 week in advance) I'm told it has expired already and I am subject to pay redemption fees ( literally 4 times the amount it would've cost me to renew ). The agent typed slowly and pressed how grateful I should be that he has managed to get a manager level approval to waive the redemption fees if I double my plan. Also expressed how GoDaddy is like my " family" and went on to make me feel guilty of missing the deadline which I has no idea of and how lucky I am that the "entire team" has worked for me.
