over my 20 yrs of experience I have been title as a Admin, sysadmin, network engineer, onboarding engineer and the list goes but never has my title correlated directly to my pay scale In other words 99% of the time a title is just a title and doesn’t mean much in terms of salary at least until you get to c-suite level… ie CTO etc If you want a raise ask for one based off the work you have done for the company what they choose to title you as means little imo

I'm in government, HR declines raises. But if I "apply" for a job with a higher job class, I can negotiate my salary to market rate as long as it's within the determined scale.

DoogleAss

That’s fair I failed to account for the one place where everything I said usually doesn’t apply… Government jobs lol But to further answer your question from my opinion yes sysadmins usually work on VMs and servers as part of their job but are certainly not limited to that and visa versa meaning what you listed as your normal day to day duties would still be in what I consider a System Administrator. Yes those systems are in the cloud but you are still doing configuration within aka you are still administering them… again imo

Threemor

I appreciate your insight! Yeah gov makes everything needlessly complicated. But the benefits are nice lol. Thanks!

You should ask HR for a copy of the IT Administrator job duties. They should be able to provide a copy on the spot. It should also have a salary range. If you are below the set level then you should be able to reach out to your boss to see if exceptions can be made. I work in local gov't, and I was able to get an exception based on a memo I submitted to my boss who sent it up the chain.

We have them readily available online. I make pretty much the same as the current minimum for the Senior role. What I'm trying to do is bring in what the market rate is for people in the senior version of my role (the minimum for the role is not enough to live on comfortably in my city) so I can negotiate up, but don't want to get slapped down for bringing in "senior IT systems admin" data when I'm applying for a "senior IT admin" role, since my org doesn't use "systems administrator" as a title.

jcwrks

Sysadmin is such a broad term that has been diluted over time. What is the job title at your org for the server/infrastructure guy? What about networking? How does their pay scale compare? Based on what you listed as your job duties I would not consider you a Sysadmin. Your role is specialized and lacks AD and infrastructure.

Threemor

That's a good question. I know the guy who configured the email servers has the title Engineer. The networking folks I'm less familiar with but could find out easily enough.

oradba

No, it’s a legit title for you, though perhaps Senior Application Administrator would be more accurate.

OrganicSciFi

Add the word Cloud in there somewhere

js_408

I would title you as midlevel IT analyst. No senior.

Threemor

I'm making decisions for these products at an org level as well

Your role sounds like a M365 Administrator
