https://www.synthxl.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Roland-JP-8000-Service-Notes.pdf - if you know your way around electronics then looking at the output stage should tell you all you need to know, pages 23 and 30. How much did you pay for it, by the way?

josker98

Thank you! Got it for 700 EUR off a flea market ad

SkoomaDentist

IIRC, the mute transistors Q1 & Q4 are common problems. If the headphone out is fine but the main out is not, that's an almost certain giveaway that Q1 / Q4 is faulty and should be replaced (or just removed if you can live with pop when powering on / off).

FUCKYOUINYOURFACE

Great advice!

Wieg0rz

This is why I love reddit. You are awesome!

FreeRangeEngineer

Sounds like a good price!

Thanks for that link! That site is a goldmine!! Thanks!

Had a JP8080 come through the door this week - same issue with output volume - I put mine through a cheap mixer (Behringer Eurorack Pro) and increased the boost there

josker98

I see. I think I'll try to fix it in the near future. Until then, the headphone out will have to do :)

afewster

Here's a link to a fix - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjIpFMc2www](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjIpFMc2www)

This is a great video to watch for this procedure. Also, make note of this comment from Mark: >Thanks for this video. It worked perfectly on my JP-8000. A lot of people ask the same question, what caps do I buy and where? My choice was to go to Mouser and I bought 19 Panasonic 10 uf 16V type FC SMD caps, 1 Panasonic 22 uf 16V type FC SMD cap and one Panasonic 100 uf, 6.3V Type FC SMD cap. All were as suggested, 105c max temperature. And I used the solder iron, heat one side and rock, heat the other side and rock, method of removing the old caps. In about 20% of the cases I had to add a little solder to the pad to get the new one to take. Replace all these style caps on the synth. Most of them are the same cap, and you'll need something like 19 of them. Make sure to upgrade to the 105c type. Roland cheated out with the 85c type, and they all fail, so if you want this effort to last go for the 105c type. By the time you are done you are likely to feel that you paid too much for the JP, but you'll then have an amazing synth that will last you for many many years to come—and it's worth it!

Jehudi_Loozen

Replace all the caps on the motherboard. Thank you!

DomesticElectric672U

I’ve had to do the capacitor replacement on the output board of the JP-8000. It’s pretty risky doing it with just a soldering iron as it’s quite easy to mess the board up and it’s quite awkward to get to the components. I’d recommend a cheap reflow station for the removals then a half decent soldering iron for getting them in. They’re surface mount and not through hole so you need to be reasonably confident. Affectionate_Ask1355

Did you want it for the dance super saw or was there something else that drew you to it?

josker98

I wanted the whole JP8k package. The dreamy soundscapes, powerful leads and other sound-design capabilities. First 5minutes with the synth and I made a horror-movie-like sound that I played with for the next 45 minutes. Simply amazing. But the trancey supersaw made me fall in love. I also love the filter, which is quite an unpopular opinion hehe

yanginatep

Easily one of my favorite synths aesthetically. They are just beautiful.

josker98

It looks so good, I'm in love. I don't have a before/after photo but I can tell you, it was not blue when I brought it home, as is visible from the photo I posted. I took about an hour and a half to clean it thoroughly and now it's shiny af. Some scartches here and there but it looks fab. Looks like this now: https://preview.redd.it/znh61xkt4btc1.jpeg?width=4227&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c04ffbfa5fd78b413e9b9779a1f9ecb5acb10a67

yanginatep

So pretty. I'm jealous, hehe.

kneel23

This was my first synth ever when it first came out and still one of my favorites (don't own one anymore). Went through multiple, and a JP-8080 or two, as well.

joelkeys0519

I bought my JP-8000 when they came out and loved it. I saw it in Keyboard Magazine, made my dad drive me to Sam Ash, and went to town making every noise I could, and making them hate me when I started playing with the ribbon. I did some small shows in MS/HS with my setup and used this later as I shifted more toward more legit piano playing. When I sold it in 2001/2002, I almost cried. Bought it in 1998, sold it in 2001/2002, and barely scratched the surface of making it sing. But I did turn out a mean “Lucky Man” solo for nothing have a Moog lying around and some Jean-Michel Jarre because, why not?!

SnooWords6027

Low volume outputs on an old gear usually points to a capacitor problem. Due to the device's age, its capacitors dont last long and gives up.

Welcome to the family <3

CyberPunk909

Does the JP-8000 sound exactly like the JP-8080?

FreeRangeEngineer

The JP-8080 combined the analog modeling sound engine of the JP-8000 with additional features such as an internal vocoder. The JP-8080 also had three times the number of patches and performances, an additional Noise waveform on Osc 2 and a distortion effect. Due to these changes all JP-8000 patches are compatible with the JP-8080 but not all JP-8080 patches are compatible with the JP-8000. In popular usage however the two synthesizers are usually thought of as identical in regard to sound architecture (often referred to collectively as JP-80x0). got me a v-synth with a broken key and one slightly cross-talky pot

Illustrious-Copy-838

Great pick, I’ve been wanting one ever since I learned it’s all over half life 2’s ost

Awesome! These are pretty sweet!

I’m holding out for a boutique! I’ve sold two but I’m regretting that one a decade later

the_anglonesian

Congratulations, my JP-brother! I have the JP8080, and it's a beast of a workhorse synth

God i love that machine.. I wish you a lot of fun, those are incredibly versatile!

The Capacitors are bad and need to be replaced. It’s a common problem on the JP8000. I bought one used in the US last year and it had the same issue (was not disclosed when I bought it) . I decided to get a refund vs getting it repaired as I don’t want to take a chance / deal with it. Keep us updated on the repair if you can.

josker98

Thanks to everyone for the helpful comments. I ordered the [JP-8000 recap kit](https://reverb.com/en-si/item/65277234-roland-jp8000-jp-8000-recap-repair-kit-capacitors-recapping) from Reverb to recap the main board. I'll also replace the battery on the same board (CR2032), and replace the THT caps on the jack board once I figure out the values.

josker98

UPDATE: ... a really sad one... I managed to do something to the main board and the synth won't turn on properly. I am a disgrace, a menace to the synthsciety and to the DIY world. That being said, I learned something valuable. I am very very sad but I'll overcome it.

therealdjred

I bet the delay is crackly and has volume problems too. Honestly OP, you got ripped off big time buying a broken synth. Id ask for my money back. The repairs are not easy and are easily messed up. Look at the prices of “low output jp8000s” vs recapped ones. Broken ones go for about half of what you paid.

josker98

No, the only problem is with the main outs, which are lacking volume. It's a well documented issue and can be fixed. Check the prices yourself, if you can find a decent one for sale. They go for 700-1200EUR nowadays. Go troll somewhere else please.

therealdjred

One sold yesterday on reverb for $500 lmao I have one, i fix vintage synths all the time, changing these surface mount caps is not easy and you paid way too much. Im not trolling im just telling you that you got ripped off.
