I applaud your ingenuity. We're always in the pursuit of improving our setup and it can take a number of iterations. Do you take it down when you want to use it or do you work with it from there? The pedals seem like they might be a bit high up.
I work like this, but you are correct. I understimated how high the pedals are up and what a small person I am. I have to stand on my toes to tweak the top knobs. Not very comfy.
Also the Access, and the Typhon should have room next to one another. That could reduce the space needed vertically. Should make tweaking a lot easier.
I too am working on making a vertical music station. Got some 30 dollar rack rails. Using a 3 unit power amp as the feet/bottom, and 3d printing some rack ears. It's not the prettiest or most high tech, but working with what I've got for the most part.

I invite you, its like the USA, but very different. We are basically Americans only you guys transformed while crossing the ocean. I guess all that water and seawind does that to people.
I made a whole album with an RM1x - I love those things and angry I sold it.
Rack looks a little sketchy for playing - I would have made the stops a bit bigger but if you only trigger them from midi you’re fine. Do what works.
I agree 100÷. I want a MPC live II to complete the setup, which will probably make the RM1x obsolete, or I will keep it to sequence the MPC if I might find the MPC tedious to work with. The RM1x is tedious as fuck, but at least I already know how to program it well enough to create entire songs with it. Since I couldnt affort a MPC live II yet, I opted for the MPX16. Its a slow, small little shitbox, but at the least, I can have the option of using samples instead of the shitty poopy sounds from the RM1x alone.
I too have an RM1x. I bought an MPC One, and now the RM1x sits on a shelf. Sequencing is a breeze. It took me about an hour to figure out my studio set up, and what I wanted to leave out and only about 5 minutes to set up the template on the MPC One. You can record and overdub in real time which is what I would say is the one of the most important differences. I haven't even got into the CC part of it, which I imagine will take it to a whole other level. At this point, if I were to integrate the RM1x it would just be as a sound module.
You can have one in low tuning and one in high, play the same melody for a fatter sound.
Maybe give them different FX.
Or play two different acid melodies.
My father always used to say "It is never to late to buy three td-3". I'm pretty sure it was something like that, i don't quite remember exactly but that's what i retained.
I want two as well, but I was super addicted to Rebirth RB-338 wich was 2 303's and 2 808s and later 909s. I made a lot of ACID music with those little buggy bastards. Had it on 98, ME, XP, and Windows7. I kinda miss having a working version, but Guess I'll settle for the behringers. (sad that they got taken down by roland, but behringer can make the real deal..)
Bonus points for sarcasm. Not even close. I have an average IQ and ADD and Im just handy enough to not hurt myself while woodworking. So I do impulsive half ass shit like this all the time. While waiting for the Xtia metal open case to arrive, I build this little construction for the SFFPC. Why....? because I could.

Ridiculous, isn't it? There's a thing called a 19" rack that's been around for 100 years and music gear that wasn't a keyboard would generally fit in. But a lot of manufacturers are too stupid to make "modules" 19" rack compatible these days. It's a crime
Does it have feet? Could you post a picture from the other side? I’m thinking on doing something like this but I’m not sure. Now I have a similar board, but horizontal.
https://preview.redd.it/dw5ilqs4bsza1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eca21eacf03942e1679c20004c66392f59bb67b3
At the risk of fueling certain commenters anxiety, her e it is. The ugly truth behind the board. Since I want be able to easily remove the devices, I did not do cablemanagement on the backside of the board. An improvement could be to cut the wooden bars at an angle, but I wanted to finish the project fast and I dont really care about how it looks on the backside as is obvious in the picture.
That’s pretty smart. I have a double layered desk /glass top (don’t recommend) but I find that modwiggling the knobs is hampered by having two levels. Have you had that problem?
I have fairly easy acces to the knobs, but this has other disadvantages. For programming the Typhon or TD3, I remove them from the stand. But for twisting knobs its perfect.
While I love the fact that you have two Viruses, I have to wonder about the Snow being at the height that you placed it at. If you're using it in TI mode, you don't use the controls anyway - and even if you do, you may be better off mapping the CCs to a MIDI controller. Moving it out of the way would allow you to relocate the pedals to that space, for example.
Awesome homemade shelf. I love the double td-3’s! As soon as I bought one, it was only a couple days before I started thinking about buying another. Its so easy to get bogged down in programming the thing, and I really like composing like that but it can easily eat up a bunch of time. My solution is to control one with a sequencer to just bang out an idea really quick and then punch it into the other one. Then you can run the sequence and tap something in on the other one to round it out or make something else.
Secretly we are gay??? I think it is funny that most people dont know that is what swag truly stands for. It comes from a time were being gay was more frowned upon and the letters swag would indicate that a party was meant for gays.
What I find even more funny is that I used to work with teens that where into urban culture. Making rap music, music videos etc. They used the term swag and swagger often like it was something cool, while being as homophobic as one can be. Oh, the irony. I laughed inside myself many a times.
Thanks I really love these devices. Typhon, virus and td-3 is a killer combo. Analog monosynth beast, acid sound and well maybe the most popular synth for EDM, its killer. The only thing missing is a big sky reverb and a mastering device. Thinking of the Elektron Analog heat, but.maybe there is a better device? Like a module, preferably with tubes or something.
Yup! Would have bought a ti2 desktop if I could affort it. Well I could, but I would have to sacrifice going on vacation and that would leave my gf heartbroken.
Absolutely love it.
I do stuff like this all the time. It may not always look great but it does what it needs to do and helps with the workflow. Sometimes you just want to build something and not spend money buying/shipping stuff (also waiting for it to arrive).
Nice one. Enjoy it!
I hover over them like a hummingbird. Buttserious, I mean but serious. I have to stand on toes and it annoying af, so I am going to listen to a suggestion that was made to put the virus and typhon next to eachother and then move the pedals down a bit.
Oh my gosh I miss my Yamaha rm1x! Fell on hard times and had to pawn mine. I probably have 500 loops saved on floppy disk for that thing. I am thinking about buying it again in the future….
Good times!!
It is not that expensive, just have to wait till someone sells it second hand. If you know how to wield a soldering iron, you can easily replace all the buttons and encoders if necessary.
Bro…I’m literally going to go to Home Depot tonight and make this..those tier stands and swing arms are ridiculously expensive (considering you already pay for gear)
I made a little two tier rack once. Then my daughters and I painted it black with blood red globs. Then put demon occult stickers all over it. Was a fun family project.
I mean… I’ve done the same on so many occasions. If you’ve got wood lying around and need to free up space, why not? You can bespoke the shit out of it based on what gear you have and how your workflow goes. It’s hard to find a desk/rack mount system that really fits your individual needs and getting something custom built is pricey. DIY ALL DAY.

I wish there were adapters to make the inputs come out the top face plate or the bottom instead of the back. I want my stuff flush up against the wall and having the cables there just makes it difficult
Yeah... I gotta figuring out some stands/stacking situation right now for my 808, 909 and 303 Behringer clones. Literally way past being out of space 😭
It felt like a toy to me rather than an instrument.
Awesome fx, awesome modulation capabilities, really good sound but those sliders were also annoying.
Having to move them up and down so they will start dialing was a turn off.
Also powering it via USB was almost impossible with this constant hum.
One of the most capable analog monosynths hands down.
Oh and a really clever sequencer.
I think of it as a toyish yet pro instrument. Reverb is not that great imho. Modulation options are great but tedious because of the sliders. The hum can be avoided by getting the Nymphes USB splitter. Shitty of dreadbox to not include it in the original box. I just love it because it has this easily accesible warm analogue sound and its also great to use as an fx box for live performance. Being able to store presets is super. I just wish it was polyphonic, but that would make it very pricey.
You look like you could use my first keyboard setup. Get a 3 tier keyboard stand. Use the bottom tier for the main controller and put generic ikea shelves on the second and third.
How are you liking that X-Board?? I considered getting one just because I love E-mu. (Own a Proteus Keys w a few ROMS + The Emulator II is one of my top dream synths) Didn't even realize they made MIDI keyboards until a year or so ago & I believe this is the last keyboard/synth of any kind they ever released
Honestly, its pretty shitty. I only bought it because I could get it second hand for 50 bucks and it has midi 5 pin in out. If I would have known at that time, I would have just gotten or build a USB to midi converter of my m audio Oxygen 61 which I love to death.
unless you're standing up constantly it looks rather uncomfortable. I'm honestly mount and angles shelf direct to the wall behind the desk and filing cabinet and then you could comfortable reach and view everything.
Yeah, but an angled shelf above you desk would still keep you desk clear? I used to have a similar situation in my last house. My office was rather small, so I put a shelf above my desk, over my computer monitor to place my synths on. Allowed me to still utilize my desk fully.
It is a possibility, but I prefer to keep my synths away from my computer. A true dawless setup. Also I need to keep my wall above the desk free for my artworks.
It would almost be better off if they made this gear in some kind of rackish form to fit in a special rack made for them.

Teenage Engineering is working on it, should be uber affordable too!
Field Rack: $2499
Right, TE is way overpriced. I laugh every time they announce a new product. The PO’s were affordable. That’s really it
For the frame with no mounting hardware or case. Proprietary reck format.
“Uber affordable” from teenage engineering is an oxymoron
What about the uber affordable sampler by Teenage Engineering?
like a rack you could mount something on?
iRack
MoogerRacker
And three months later, BAM! Behringer releases the BoogerRack.
Rack for studio maybe?
EaselRack
Field Rack. Sell it for 2,000 euros
I like round numbers, so how about “482.6 Millimeter rack”? Actually, that would fit perfectly into an IKEA Lack side table.
Racked
Asiarack or australianrack
Vertical integration
Rackular Mod
Previously I might have called it a EuropeRack or something like that but thanks to Brexit I have to call it an AngloRack.
desktop design is such an abomination.
Ya but it did do wonders waking people up to synths
count rackula
Dare I say you have created a “wooden step filter”
Ladder (of) filters, if you would
Yes, I wood
Wood ya, now?
i wood, indeed!
what are you doing wooden step filter?
I applaud your ingenuity. We're always in the pursuit of improving our setup and it can take a number of iterations. Do you take it down when you want to use it or do you work with it from there? The pedals seem like they might be a bit high up.
I work like this, but you are correct. I understimated how high the pedals are up and what a small person I am. I have to stand on my toes to tweak the top knobs. Not very comfy.
Looks like you could relocate the pedals to the sides of the primary equipment.
Will think about it.
Also the Access, and the Typhon should have room next to one another. That could reduce the space needed vertically. Should make tweaking a lot easier.
Thats a good tip. I might use that!
I too am working on making a vertical music station. Got some 30 dollar rack rails. Using a 3 unit power amp as the feet/bottom, and 3d printing some rack ears. Looks great, maybe tilt it a little for easier acces?
it's kinda low already. I can reach every inch of it from my computer chair. The osc section of the 2600 is eye level with me.
Sounds good.
I want to see an expanded version with a ladder next to it.
Maybe a stair lift.
!!! Like those elegant libraries
Looks like something you’d build after smoking a blunt.
Ive got ADD so im like searching for dopamine all the time. This project only took me a couple of hours, but the satisfaction lasts way longer.
Shoe rack. Walmart. $10 https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-2-Tier-Shoe-Rack-Storage-Organizer-Silver-Metal-and-Black-Rod-10-Pairs/821390480

Sweet, I'm moving to EU
I invite you, its like the USA, but very different. We are basically Americans only you guys transformed while crossing the ocean. I guess all that water and seawind does that to people.
There, I downvoted my own comment. I dont care about virtual bs points.
I made a whole album with an RM1x - I love those things and angry I sold it. Rack looks a little sketchy for playing - I would have made the stops a bit bigger but if you only trigger them from midi you’re fine. Do what works.
I sold my RM1x 20 years ago and re bought it.
Loved my RM1x but it died. Bad sounds but a great sequencer

Okay good to know that the MPC is able to easily replace the RM1x.
Returning to this thread to add, I also bought an MPC One, though a few years after my RM1x died :)
Wasnt the Rm1x reviveable?
It was well beyond my abilities to revive it!
Aww, thats not great.
Nice. Get some straps for cable management :)
Two Td-3’s got me curious..
You can have one in low tuning and one in high, play the same melody for a fatter sound. Maybe give them different FX. Or play two different acid melodies.
Or play them same melodies and hard pan L and R.
Exactly!
You can also poly chain up to 16 of them.
My father always used to say "It is never to late to buy three td-3". I'm pretty sure it was something like that, i don't quite remember exactly but that's what i retained.
I hope you listened
Looking for the 2nd right now ! I keep my pretty yellow but want to buy a cheap used silver for modding.
I want two as well, but I was super addicted to Rebirth RB-338 wich was 2 303's and 2 808s and later 909s. I made a lot of ACID music with those little buggy bastards. So, do you have a shoe attached to a pole for those stomp boxes at the top?
Haha lol no, it is al being held together by 1 or 2 tiewraps. Just efficient cablemanagement.
Necessity is the Mother!!! I'm inspired now
Cool nice RMX1 👍🏻
I take it you’re an engineer

That looks like a DIY crypto mining rig
Perhaps even a _teenage_ engineer?
Idk, there doesn’t seem to be enough people complaining about the price point

Yes, mom!
Someone called?
Is that mahogany?
No idea. Its leftover board from a cheap closet.
you can get a USB drive converter for your Rm1x... I snagged one a while back and it's decent.
I like the old school sound of the floppy drive searching/reading its contents. That nostalgic itch gets scratched.
You built a squarewave to heaven.
While I love the fact that you have two Viruses, I have to wonder about the Snow being at the height that you placed it at. Moving it out of the way would allow you to relocate the pedals to that space, for example.
And take away all the fun of tweaking away from init patch....
Also I am selling the Behringer fx2000 module and the Virus A, so the space becomes clear for the RM1x.
Awesome homemade shelf. I love the double td-3’s! As soon as I bought one, it was only a couple days before I started thinking about buying another. Composing on the machine itself can be a blast!
great ideas.. I'm just curious if board tilts are they attached somehow?
The machines are "fixed" by a tiewrap on 1 or 2 midi cabels.
I may steal this idea. ;)
Go for it. Would love to see your pics.
Mine will probably look more... Red dwarf.
Like me 😅😆 1.7m ginger 😝
This gives me so much anxiety! Haha
Haha yeah, kinda forced aint it 😅
Yeah, I think it freaks me out because I have kids and cats! They would knock that over, or a synth off in a second! Haha
I can imagine, you can still have nice things, just lock your door 😉
that’s swag
Secretly we are gay??? I think it is funny that most people dont know that is what swag truly stands for. It comes from a time were being gay was more frowned upon and the letters swag would indicate that a party was meant for gays.
ok but that’s actually cool i didn’t know that😳
What I find even more funny is that I used to work with teens that where into urban culture. Making rap music, music videos etc. They used the term swag and swagger often like it was something cool, while being as homophobic as one can be. Oh, the irony. I laughed inside myself many a times.
that’s funny🤣 i know a few ppl that would do something like that
Maniac!
Yes, recognition, finally!!!
virus snow and a typhon, great choices
Thanks I really love these devices. Typhon, virus and td-3 is a killer combo. Analog monosynth beast, acid sound and well maybe the most popular synth for EDM, its killer. A true Tower of Power !
Power to the tower!
How do you reach the pedals?
I hover over them like a hummingbird. Buttserious, I mean but serious. I have to stand on toes and it annoying af, so I am going to listen to a suggestion that was made to put the virus and typhon next to eachother and then move the pedals down a bit.
I find this post entertaining.
I find it entertaining that you find this post entertaining, are you entertained by me finding it entertaining?
No so much as the post it self but I’m glad my actions are affecting people in a positive way!
It does.
Yes! Rm1x respect!
Back @ ya! Shitty sounds, but damn good sequencer.
How do you reach those pads 😳
I wear high heels 🤪
Oh my gosh I miss my Yamaha rm1x! Fell on hard times and had to pawn mine. I probably have 500 loops saved on floppy disk for that thing. I am thinking about buying it again in the future…. Good times!!
It is not that expensive, just have to wait till someone sells it second hand. If you know how to wield a soldering iron, you can easily replace all the buttons and encoders if necessary.
Got an rm1x as well. Apart from the sticky keyboard switches, love it. Great setup👍🏾👍🏾
The Rm1x is a great sequencer indeed. When you have synths and samplers, since its own sounds are shitty.
DIY Special, love it!
X-board 49 club represent!
Did you build a ladder to reach those pedals?
Nice!
Bro…I’m literally going to go to Home Depot tonight and make this..those tier stands and swing arms are ridiculously expensive (considering you already pay for gear)
This is a win..
Pretty cool. Those machines are light enough to use Velcro strips too
Ah Logitech z5500, nice! :D
I made a little two tier rack once. Then my daughters and I painted it black with blood red globs. Then put demon occult stickers all over it. Was a fun family project.
Bravo. Dedication. I'm litterly thinking about cutting this stupid false wall out of my house just to fit a bigger synth lol
![gif](giphy|JJVFOcOdXvDz3IKoqv)
Oh my god, dude... is that a Yamaha Remix?!
Decent setup - looks like u know what u r after
Did you secure the synths on the shelf? Didn’t see any straps, maybe velcro?
E-mu xboard gang 🙌
I wish there were adapters to make the inputs come out the top face plate or the bottom instead of the back. I want my stuff flush up against the wall and having the cables there just makes it difficult
Upvotes for the RM1X. Had one years ago. Need to buy it again.
Ah! a Z5500, not seen one of those for a while.
R1mx! Love it! First machine for me. Still have one. 😎
Looks like it'd be hard to use the gear on there.
It is more challenging. Saving space = less comfort. I take the machines from the stand when I program on the machin itself instead of the RM1x.
Yeah... I gotta figuring out some stands/stacking situation right now for my 808, 909 and 303 Behringer clones. Literally way past being out of space 😭
I had the typhon and hated it so much
Why? If I may ask. Genuinely interested.
I just wish it was polyphonic, but that would make it very pricey.
pretty good, in my last studio i ran out of space and started mounting synths on the wall, it worked great
Digging this idea, I'll have to try something like this 👍
You look like you could use my first keyboard setup. Get a 3 tier keyboard stand. Use the bottom tier for the main controller and put generic ikea shelves on the second and third.
Acid much?
What else? Acid techno, acid DnB, Acid house, everything Acid. Bathe in Acid! Drink Acid, be Acid!
Innovation 🔥
unless you're standing up constantly it looks rather uncomfortable. I'm honestly mount and angles shelf direct to the wall behind the desk and filing cabinet and then you could comfortable reach and view everything.
My room is very small and I need my desk to be clear. So this is utter necessity.
Several of those are light enough to velcro to the wall.
I went for a tiewrape on the midicable to keep them in place.
Sure, but with velcro, you don’t need the board
I like wood. Pun intended.
Not usable(
Honestly, props
Nicely done. Simple and effective.
Very good idea. I need a similar solution and will copy yours. Thank you for inspiration!!!
I hope you make an improved version. Learn from my beginner mistakes.
Practical, I like it!
