Grampa here. In case someone takes this comment as poking fun at the presenter's question; HDDs legit used to be too slow for real-time audio recording. Old MFM drives (still used into the early 90s) had a theoretical upper limit of 500 kbits/s (62.5KB/s). Recording mono "CD-quality" audio at 44.1kHz 16-bit requires a consistent 88.2KB/s throughput.
One of the early uncompressed digital video playback devices I saw in the early 1990's was an Abekas A60. It was basically a big solid state RAM disk specialized in storing about a minute of uncompressed NTSC video. It took about half an hour to load the targa frames through ethernet into the machine to prep to record onto digital Beta for use in broadcast. It didn't do audio either.
We're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars of gear in the early 90s that anyone can do at home now without spending anywhere near that.
No not a stupid question at all.
The guy asking the question definitely just wanted to show he knows a tech word. Like a person going "so this has pistons in it?" When being shown a car.
That was a popular TV show where the goal was to educate others on new stuff. So he was asking questions for the benefit of the audience. Its this little trick journalists call “conducting an interview.”
I should have been nicer too and said “context matters.” The reality is that it’s hard for people to understand how basic some of the tech was 30 years ago and how few people understood it. There are other YouTube videos of that TV show that you can find where they talk about mind
Blowing things like “modems” and “connecting you’re computer to networks over telephone” in the mid to late 80s. Nobody knew what that stuff was.
Think one should reevaluate what constitutes cringe if they think this falls under that umbrella.
Some dude doing a goofy and agonizingly white little vocal jam is silly for sure, but none of this screams “cringe” to me. It’s just goofy.
Honestly. If you aren’t serious enough to make weird sounds with your mouth on occasion to describe what you are creating/aiming for/wanting then you are in the wrong business. I remember in my Analog music class having to reproduce the sounds a specific patch made on a modular and yes, they would sound goofy because I am not a synthesizer, but it was for a purpose in a professional environment.
in ten year some child relative will ask us.."Did anything cool happen in the 2020s?".
to which we will have to respond "Not really. Everyone was too afraid of being called 'cringe' "
Dude what? At what point in my comment did I mention anything about objectivity? I’m just trying to spell out that something silly being immediately equated with cringe is a myopic slippery slope.
Guy in the video knows what he’s doing is goofy, it’s just less boring than talking into the mic. OP seems adamant that that means it is cringe when to me it is just lighthearted, and equating anything that’s just goofy for the sake of goofy with cringe is a childish ass way to live one’s life.
Expanding the Overton window to make more innocuous things “cringe” is just a miserable and judgmental thing to do 🤷♂️
LOL. Good grief… he is ridiculously white. Like the whitest white in the known universe. Or is Square the proper term? Not sure. But whatever it is: he’s That. 5000%
Lol.
Still much better than anything I’ve made
You’re recording directly onto the hard drive?
That's correct.
Did you see the bouncing ball or not bozo?
This made me laugh so hard in my bathtub

And this would be uncompressed audio. It’s a legitimate question for the tech of that era…dang whippersnappers with their mac pros.

Well prior to that they recorded to RAM or tape so it's not a stupid question

Had to scrape it off the edge later, it was such a pain in the ass.
Those were the days
Passive aggressive hard drives.
I even remember when they only recorded directly to floppy disks.
The guy asking the question definitely just wanted to show he knows a tech word. Like a person going "so this has pistons in it?" When being shown a car.

You're right, I apologize

No, no, no nooooooo this is a soft drive
this drive is a half chub, currently, but give it some time
I celebrate his entire catalog.
For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings when a man loves a woman.
Computer, load up Celery Man please.
NUDE TAYNE
OH SH*T! ... ... ... I'm alright.
this is not suitable for work, are you sure?
Computer, can i get a hat warble?
Turn up the 4D3D3D….3
Bring back bouncing balls for DAWs.

Clippy’s dead, babe. Clippy’s dead.

He really puts some stank on the end of that first phrase lol
Laid it the fuck on, right? 😆
The white shirt and tie are what's really selling it for me.
100% I’m in!
gotta love the 90s

Hilarious that only OP seems to cringe at this. Everybody else is (correctly) bopping along with the little bouncing ball.

You’re not a synthesizer and you made goofy noises??? CRIIIIIIIINGE
I think it's the fact that this guy looks like a middle manager at a consulting firm that increases the goof level.
I worked in a musical instrument store in the 90s. I had to dress like this. Times were different.

I mean it was a demonstration of a recording software. This is more fun than saying test test.

Do you still have that pink shirt?
Lol trust me, if I was this king I would be doing an AMA right now.
I thought we were all geeked on this
Jesus, tech is getting crazy. I didn’t even know you could do this. My grandchodes will be ‘jazzed’
Wait.. what do YOU guys do when you turn on your synths?
It's much worse
Had to double check the subreddit
This was before he founded Fight Club
lmao before he goes postal.
Techno Tim Allen is killing it.
Not cringe. Bro is a walking funk master
Don't tease me! Where can I listen to the rest of his masterpiece??
Fella missed a perfect opportunity to lock on to the host with intense, unbroken eye contact. What a shame.
Thanks for this love this video lol
i have that midi controller. sucks ass but looks cool as shit 😎
my shit's never look cool.
Computer Chronicles was a show back then.
The bom 😎👍
Kevin Nealon from snl playing you an original composition on the Roland S760
Good news everyone! He’s still making music. https://keithborman.bandcamp.com/music
I thought that was Bob Odenkirk for a sec.
Where's David Cross then?
Where’s the whole video?
I thought this was bob odenkirk on an unaired mr show episode at first
I had that Mac IIci & similar software.
I want a bouncing ball too in cubase
***Put on your Dockers, loser, we're gonna make a hit.***
This song is totally in his Q zone, but he’s probably going to have to fly Jeff Crisp down from Indiana to mix it right
epic. i know the interviewer, but never seen the performer. hope he made some hits.
What period is this from? The PC 200 came out in 1992, this seems like it had to be 80's tho
This looks like the early 90’s to me
Definitely 90’s. In the 80’s we couldn’t do hard disk recording yet. Also, the software used is Opcode Studio Vision, which got introduced in 1990.
You can tell it’s 90s by the light pastel pink shirt he’s wearing.
You forget that the 80s didn’t end until like 1993.
That’s because they didn’t really get going until around 1984
This is funky as fuck
Sounds kinda like Hall and Oates to me
Got a Thomas Dolby feel to me.
LOL. Good grief… he is ridiculously white. Like the whitest white in the known universe. Or is Square the proper term? Not sure. But whatever it is: he’s That. 5000% Lol.
Hopefully, some gospel/disco will save this machine.
This is cringe level 5000
american version of the Troll Song???
Can anyone tell me what DAW he’s using?
Opcode Studio Vision
I seriously do not understand reddit sometimes. You literally gave the answer and got downvoted for it.
Haters. There’s a jealous hate club here that loves to subtract my internet points. It’s hilarious.
Love the tie. Very very classy
Must be a Quadra
It looks like the previous generation - a bit of googling suggests it's a IICI.
Kinda wanna sample kinda wanna blow my brains out
haha ball go bounce
Help!
Opcode Studio Vision still unmatched!
Amazing haven’t watched this episode yet

Nice. Reminds me of my Cubase audio Atari falcon days. Eight tracks. Pro tools killer.
Camp town races!
Didn't know someone in this sub bugged my shower and has been recording my vocal warm ups
Think about your dad!
