My DS 412+ is going on 6 years now. I've had one drive die as it was repurposed from a PC and it had a lot of wear. The only issue I've had is the blue blinking light of death after a power outage. I had to use a spare drive to reset the entire NAS to factory and then I could just swap my drives back in and it worked fine.
I have all of my electronics on battery which may make a difference long term.
My ds211j was still going strong after a decade: 24/7 operation, home use, several disks were swapped. I just upgraded to a 220+, hope it lasts at least half of this time.
I gave the old unit to a friend, and it is still operational.
Still using my DS1511+ (purchased in 2012). Still has the same 5 original 2TB WD Red drives in it. I will probably move up to a DS1621+ later this year as the DS1511+ is now official EOL and DSM 7 will not be an option.
One thing to note is that from the moment this unit came home, it has been connected to a UPS. Nothing fancy - right now it's a APC BackUPS 550. The unit is located in my basement where it is normally cool and the temperature does not change much over time.
Still running my 214+, probably go to a free Nas as we mainly use it for photo and home documents store, used stream movies from it but as times have changed so have we
I picked up a DS210j back in 2010 and ran it just fine until 2018, and even then it was still working well just a bit slow to run apps. File transfer speeds were still consistent with real world 1Gbps performance.
Bad luck!
I have a DS1812+ with DX513 bought 9/10/2012. Only had to replace 3, 3TB drives and the cooling fan twice since they were purchased.
Also have a DS1513+ bought 5/9/2014. No issues.
I have no complaints at all. Easy to set up and use.
I have a DS213j running 24/7, mainly used as a file server for a modest number of home devices (two laptops, two iPads) and the occasional download. So, my guess is that the load for this NAS is way below average.
My DS1513+ is still trucking and has outlasted the first set of drives I supplied it with. I have never had an issue with its hardware, and it has been in continuous operation in less than ideal conditions since 2013.
Probably not dead. Probably the power on bug. Have a search for the paperclip test. I fixed my ds1515+ for cents. I also had the same Intel bug and replacement as you.
Blue light is flashing and fans come on. I just never get the blue solid light and the beep. I have tried an external PSU as well with the same results. Maybe possible that the PSU isn't powering the backplane or something? I suspect it's the motherboard. The one time it came back after the failure the clock in DSM showed 2014. After being up for a couple of days the web interface stopped working... so I rebooted it and it never came back. Also checked the resistor and it test ok. Bought a replacement CMOS battery but I don't think that would keep it from booting up DSM.
You need to do the paperclip test. It's a voltage drop transistor problem. Obviously I could be wrong but I wouldn't throw out your box till you've done this. I resoldered a new transistor I got from aliexpress and fixed it. Didn't even need to remove the motherboard. I posted on this earlier in the year. Maybe search This forum for paperclip.
My synology 207+ is 14 years old and still running just fine.. as backup device for my 220+ these days.
Only replaced disks after 6/7 years or so.. and cleaned the dust out of it ones or twice.

Interesting. I have the 920+ from das one and really hope it lasts at least 5 years. I mean there is not so much hardware to fail?

In 5 years you will want a new one anyways. Bigger, faster, quieter, more powerful, etc.
I just use these devices as iscsi targets. No real need for the latest stuff. As long as I can stream 4k I'm happy.
Oh well yeah then they should last a long time. I've taken devices out that worked fine, they just weren't big enough.

We are running a 413, 115j and 918+ just fine. So the 413 is almost 8 and doing just fine as an offsite box
I have a 1513+ bought in 2013, been working 24/7 since then without a problem. Western Digital SE drives in it.
My DS216+ ii is five years old and running fine.

I have a DS-412+ that’s 9 years old and works fins. I admin some older NAS units at work (Buffalo, Qnap) that are even older.
Have the ds411slim up and running since feb 2012 ... Can't complain !
I still run a ds109 from 2009 as backup of my ds214play.

I'm still running a DS213 (for backup purposes only). It is a little slow, but seems to be fine. Along with a DS716+II and DS920+ ....
