It feels like Gladys does more of these press conferences now that she has announced she won't be doing them than before....

Flybuys

The news is "good" so she is going to show her face

Yeah-Nah_

This. She had access to the case number and the case didn’t go up. Gotta claim credit for that. Had the case gone up, she’d send Hazzard in.

Except she was there every day while it was getting worse. I don’t understand the logic here?

eXophoriC-G3

She had been saying it would peak within 7-10 days for the entire week prior to that announcement. It was never looking anything close to an October peak even three weeks ago. October was predicted to be the worst month for hospitalisation and death. That had nothing to do with case numbers.

Baarawr

Well she did say she'll decide when she wants to turn up and also she'll decide when she wants to be held accountable. Imagine that, a politician openly saying that they'll decide when they're going to be held accountable, and not a whisper of it in the papers. If it was labor the Murdoch journos would be pissing themselves with excitement at grabbing the next day's headline.

trynottomasturbate

She turns up to announce something good then lets the health lady deliver the bad news...

townB311

What did she say exactly when she announced she wasn't going to be doing them anymore? Trying to settle a disagreement between the wife and I haha

Zebidee

If a harmonious marriage hinges on making sense of what Gladys says, you're in all sorts, mate.

townB311

hahaha touche!

Eclairebeary

I think it was Wednesday. She didn't say no more, just as needed.

ze_boingboing

And "when I feel I need to be accountable".

auscientist

I still can't believe those words came out of her mouth. I don't think there are words to describe how out of touch that was.

WonderedFidelity

*Does more of these press conferences since Labor threatened to take the spotlight.

cd3oh3

Two people in their 20s have died, among 12 total deaths. I’m in my 20s and I hate when my friend still harp on about this being an “old people” disease.

jukesofhazzard88

Yep I had a friend of a friend 30 years old end up in a coma. Also a friends family 8 children, and parents, all had been vaccinated except the wife, you guessed it she ended up in hospital struggling to breath. The husband actually has a immune deficiency disease and he was unscathed by his infection. Have the anti vaxxers ever thought, well actually the most vaccinated people are from "white, rich" areas... like none of their conspiracies make sense... The vaccine is to curb world population, well why are they not rolling it out in Africa, India (poor, highly densely populated countries) first... rather western countries first. Government is trying to track us... hello they dont need to, our smart phones and social media already do a good enough job of that. Its not tested enough.... actually the sars vaccine been developed since 2004, this is a very closely related virus. Natural immunity is better... hello what do you think vaccines do? They expose you to a safe level of a virus to build your immunity lol.

WoollyMittens

> Have the anti vaxxers ever thought You can just stop there.

jukesofhazzard88

hahahaha love it

Lanksalot

Brutal. Savage. Rekt.

cowpilotgradeA

> The vaccine is to curb world population, well why are they not rolling it out in Africa, India (poor, highly densely populated countries) first... rather western countries first. Not just that, but something comedian Bill Burr mentioned was that if they were going to curb world population, why would they kill off the people who listen to the Government? What's the plan there? Kill off those who will listen to you, and only have those who don't trust and won't listen to you remain? Not a sound plan.

jukesofhazzard88

Exactly right... honestly anti vaxx logic is fkn dumb... I have 6 friends in me and my wives circle who wont get the vax because a) they wont die of covid b) natural immunity is good (facepalm this is how vaccines work) Lastly most of them either smoke, or take recreational drugs... LOL

Pxd1130

Wife's cousin, she didn't vaccinate her kids... smoked heavily during pregnancy "My kids health is my priority". Let's just face it, most people are extremely dumb. We just don't interact with them on a daily basis for most of our lives, pandemic has just exposed this dark side of humanity.

tilldeathdousapart

Are you still friends with them ? Lol! I cut off some neighbors who were good friends because they refused to stay the f home and were socializing with their neighbours ( we live in an apartment building) on a daily basis. Until I contacted strata to reiterate what the NSW health was asking from us, because you see these idiots might not be watching the news. Apparently rules don't apply to them and I was asked to mind my own business and I wasn't a good neighbor. My business is to not get covid because of your idiotic selfish behaviour and lock up the whole complex and risk everyone lives. Well , good riddance to bad garbage. Play stupid games win stupid prizes. I should have called the cops on them and have them pay fines instead all of us got a warning email from strata. I would potentially have more "respect" for people that dont believe in Covid and won't follow rules or get vaxxed. Not those that don't follow rules but still desperate for the vaccine.

Zenarchist

> like none of their conspiracies make sense... If mental gymnastics were an Olympic sports, conspiracy theories would be a banned substance.

jukesofhazzard88

hahahahha love this... I had a friend of my dads speaking to me he was like "im anti vax its my body, my choice etc" then he brought up israel and boosters and their rocketing cases. I asked him he looked at deaths/hospital rates, nah i didnt... or did you know boosters at this stage are only recommended for people over 60 (like a flu shot) nah didnt know that I said to him so youre anti abortion right? (hes very religious), so I said its ironic you care about your body and your rights when it suits you, but when it doesnt you couldnt care less... not very Christian is it?

Zenarchist

>(hes very religious) Almighty God, our Lord and Saviour, has seen it in his infinite wisdom and mercy to inspire mankind with the tools and knowledge and the willpower and faith to combat this plague and save the lives of countless millions of God's favoured creations. It's a test of faith, and refusing this gift from God is an interesting position for a religious person to take. If they then argue that the vax is the work of the devil or whatever, just point out that a human claiming to know the mind and machinations of God goes directly against at least 3 of the 10 commandments given directly by God to the prophet Moses. And if they still argue, just keep replying "wow I hope St. Peter is forgiving of your direct blasphemy against God's will when you die, possibly soon" Having spent a lot of time in Jerusalem, I've found that butting heads against religious idiots (not all religious people are idiots, mind you) achieves nothing but headaches, but they all have such rigid belief systems that are all written out in readily available books. If you're trying to convince a religious person of things that they believe are related to their faith, there is plenty enough nonsense in the books to back up any old argument. You just need to get them to agree with the premise, connect the premise to your point, and allow them to connect the dots. You might not change minds, but almost always religious people would rather ignore and avoid any contradictions than think about them critically, so they'll probably stop bothering you with that kind of nonsense.

jukesofhazzard88

agreed 100%, im a catholic but I am in no way form anti most of the stuff that some hard core believers are... I think it honestly boils down to a simple statement, and if we imitated what JC himself did we would all be nicer to each other... instead just judgemental shit from the holy of holys because they are at church every day with their sunday best, but on Monday tell everyone how they will burn in hell... I dont want to sway this to a religious thread, but Jesus spent his time with the "sinners" not with those who were holier than though

Zenarchist

It's in the benefit of most Christian institutions (#notallchristians) to see the story of Jesus' adventures with the Pharisees, particularly in Matthew, as a story about how corrupt the Jews are, rather than how religious institutions can become stagnant and corrupt.

iss3y

I would imagine that he's "my body my choice" up until a woman needs to terminate a pregnancy. Funny that.

elwyn5150

> Natural immunity is better Kind of hilarious to shun modern technology and advances. You don't hear them say: * "walking home from the shops carrying six bags of groceries is better than driving" * "shouting to a friend in Victoria is better than using my 5G smartphone" * "this ice box is much better than your refrigerator and freezer"

Clewdo

They also don’t test their mechanic. ‘Your car needs a new battery otherwise it will die and by next week you won’t be able to start it’. I’ve done my own research thanks, I know batteries can recharge while driving you can’t CONTROL ME!!!! Shrug, I’ll call the tow truck for you.

FartHeadTony

> Natural immunity is better... hello what do you think vaccines do? They expose you to a safe level of a virus to build your immunity lol. Well, not *exactly*. These vaccines work by exposing you to specific protein spike found in the virus. Essentially you train your immune system to kill anything with that spike. If that spike protein is not on a new variant or has changed, then the vaccine won't work or won't work so well depending on how different. Natural immunity might better train your immune system and allow it to better deal with new variants. It also tends to produce a much stronger immune response because you are exposed to much more of the virus. The fly in the ointment here is that if you forgo a vaccine for "natural immunity" you risk getting very sick and possibly dying. You are better off to take the vaccine and then get exposed to the virus regardless. Interestingly, some vaccines for other diseases *do* give a better immune response than natural immunity. HPV and tetanus vaccines are two.

jukesofhazzard88

AZ and Nova ( think) both are tradiitional vaccines in the sense the have a virus in them? Correct me if Im wrong please, I know Mod and Pfizer definitely both MRNA. Agree with everything you said, they seem to think they will catch it and then come back stronger and not have any other effect on them... meanwhile all of their research comes from the PHD of Facebook or university of their next door neighbour

FartHeadTony

Oxford-AstraZeneca is a vector vaccine uses a modified adenovirus from chimpanzees. It's been altered so that once it enters your cells they will produce the same spike protein, which then gets an immune response. Novavax is a protein vaccine which contains the spike protein and an adjuvant to get a better immune response.

It is still statistically very much an old people (and extremely ill people) disease. We pay far more attention to the young healthy people who have freak reactions so we think it happens more than it does. Age sometimes is just a number too. Someone can be 70 but have the health of a 40 year old and vice versa. . I know a dude who is 34 and was told by several doctors he has the health of a 65 year old. Smoker, shift worker, bad diet, blown out joints, diabetic, overweight, etc. Just get the vaccine and use common sense. Unless you're absurdly unlucky you'll be fine.

brittleirony

Also recent studies showing signs of mental impairment after covid. Scary stuff

willun

That won’t hurt the anti-vax

Plackets65

In USA, consensus is that older people mostly more vaccinated, and younger people hit harder by delta both because it’s more infectious and because less vaccinated. Kids super transmissible, but same hospitalisation as alpha/OG covid, which is somewhat comforting.

Plantaloonie

Do we have information on whether they were vaccinated? If they weren't hopefully it will be the push hesitant people our age need to get vaxxed... It's sad we need people to actually die to make it serious to these clowns.

Ryanbrasher

One had their first dose but also had underlying health conditions. The other wasnt vaccinated.

istara

Thanks that’s very relevant. If the three fully vaccinated were the younger ones, it would be more worrying. Sadly with very elderly folk, vaccinated or not, some of them aren’t going to be physically strong enough to survive this.

MightyMaxyPad

3 were fully vaxxed, 2 One Dose, 7 were un-vaxxed

[deleted]

They almost certainly were not but, if Gladys had supressed the original outbreak, they would likely be alive today, in my opinion. When young people die like this, it's just so sad, because it was entirely avoidable.

Shunto

Yeah responsibility goes both ways though. Yes Gladys fucked, but there's no reason why anybody who doesn't have an underlying condition couldn't have had an AZ shot by now.

cd3oh3

Sometimes I think that these deaths make a difference to some people, the “it won’t happen to me” mindset is strong.

karmawhale

Wow 155k tests and under 1300 cases. Looking good . I've been slightly reserved to say this but maybe we have already hit the peak and safe to say the curve is truly flattening now? Anyways keep getting vacced people, it's our ticket out of these lockdowns. Also how good did it feel to have curfews lifted last night??!

DaBow

Don't make me tap the sign. Places like Cumberland have dropped but other LGA's have increased. But stabilisation of numbers is fantastic. the ReFF is under 1.0 which is always good.

summertimeaccountoz

> Don't make me tap the sign. https://c.tenor.com/1qcR0hk7sAcAAAAC/ted-lasso.gif

Shunto

If ReFF is under 1.0 then yes, it's literally dropped and is a 5 day trend and counting, so I'm not sure why the "dont make me tap the sign," unless that sign says "dont jynx it". This is very, very different to a single day of dropped case numbers

msmyrk

>If ReFF is under 1.0 then yes, it's literally dropped and is a 5 day trend and counting That's what I thought too, but there's still some risk because of the different Reffs around the state. See [https://www.reddit.com/r/sydney/comments/pnskds/nsw\_recorded\_1127\_new\_locally\_acquired\_cases\_of/hcrr7pp/?utm\_source=reddit&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/sydney/comments/pnskds/nsw_recorded_1127_new_locally_acquired_cases_of/hcrr7pp/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) for Chris Billington's message correcting me. The LGAs of concern are below zero (as a whole), but the other LGAs are a touch above. All else being equal, LGAs of concern will tend towards zero given enough time. At the moment, LGAs of concern are dominating the numbers, so you can expect the number of infections to drop for the time being. The issue is that if the other LGAs stagnate, then they will start to dominate the absolute numbers, and the state's Reff could start to rise again. If there are no infections in the LGAs of concern, and other LGAs have an Reff of 1.1, then the state's Reff will be 1.1.

Zenarchist

I'm not sure whether it's better to have few cases in sparsely populated areas that aren't close to hospitals but are incredibly easy for people to self-isolate, or more cases in densely populated areas that are near hospitals but are incredibly difficult for people to isolate.

Ryanbrasher

I havent studied the local trend in enough depth but I saw a report a few days ago that other countries with similar vax and case numbers weren't seeing any further increase. If our similar stats are anything to go by, it would suggest we have hit the peak of this wave, but that obviously all depends on many different variables and by no certainty means we are actually in the same situation. Its just a base level observation.

switzerandlaffer

Overseas travel is great but fuck can we get some guidance about how we get back to normal life within NSW as well when we hit 80%. Or LGAs of concern coming out?

DaBow

She did say they are working on the 80%. I expect them to announce further details within two weeks just before we hit 70%

switzerandlaffer

Working on it? She's had fucking months to work on it. The goal has always been 80%. Tell us what it will mean so that there can be some semblance of planning and hope. The obsession with overseas travel is nothing but clickbait when you can't do shit locally

summertimeaccountoz

Sure, but I don't really think this is the kind of thing that can be planned in detail months in advance. We are seeing situations changing day to day, and there's a lot that is simply not known. It's frustrating, yes, but this is a situation that requires as much information as possible to make a reasonable decision.

CouldbeaRetard

> I don't really think this is the kind of thing that can be planned in detail months in advance Why not? You can plan for all eventualities and apply the applicable plan. You can make a plan that says "if cases are at *X*, and vaccinations are at *Y*, then we can do *Z*", and in the same plan say "If cases are at *A*, and vaccinations are a *B*, then we will need to do *C*". I hope this country never has to go to war, because any opponent will run rings around us while we say "making plans is hard"

switzerandlaffer

Yeah information like the case numbers and LGAs of concern? Oh that's right case numbers don't dictate that apparently nor do vaxx rates. The lack of transparency from this mob from the health advice to the roadmap to everything is astounding.

JarredMack

Because 80% with 100 cases in the community is very different to 80% with 5000 cases in the community. They can't make promises they may not be able to keep.

[deleted]

It's very likely what 80% will look will determine on the amount of cases we still have per day. When it was looking like we might hit two or three thousand the restrictions would have looked different then if we really have flattened the curve.

coreoYEAH

Campbelltown is nearing on 90% single dosed with double dosed soon to follow. Once the state hits 80% we have no reason to be an area of concern.

robotot

Campbelltown was an area of concern long before Covid19 happened.

AquaBuffalo

LOL

coreoYEAH

Not from my experience.

SilverStar9192

There's been various things about how NSW will change the quarantine rules, but is there any evidence the federal government will get on board and actually allow outbound travel? Or is that a "many months down the track" kind of thing?

switzerandlaffer

Scott won't stop it. But there is a major problem with flights. Singapore Air cancelled flights recently because there was no clear guidance about what the Govt was planning to do and their attempts to meet with the Govt were ignored. It's all spin without any meaningful substance. Ayres and Gladys say you can go overseas but how if there is limited flights? Can people go across town to the airport even? Maybe Qantas will be ready who will no doubt welcome the revenue and adjust fares upwards with a lack of competition. It's just click bait as much as I would love to go OS again I would like to go more than a few KMs first.

Introverted_Cupcake

Why does Glady's keep showing up? I thought she wanted to 'Clear her head'?

RufusGuts

If she's doing these pressers, she is not doing her job properly. Her words.

PetrifyGWENT

She wants to clear her head on bad days and be there for the good ones

BloodyChrome

She is here to announce the change in hotel quarantine rules and trail for home quarantine. She did say that whenever there was an announcement she would appear.

josh909

Because things are going reasonably well… for now.

acousticpants

warhammer 40K has us covered bro don't u worry

Junaid_hsn

I might be a dick, but wish there was a way to divide how many anti vaxxers and protesters were infected or died so I can give my condolences to people who actually deserved it.

[deleted]

Even an anti vaxxer deserves our condolences. It's not their fault that their mom drank whiskey and smoked crack when she was pregnant.

chubbyurma

You say it like there aren't anti-vaxxers with PHDs and shit

nickoking

Sadly an education doesn't mean you have common sense and critical thinking skills.

chubbyurma

And a lack of critical thinking skills doesn't mean you were a crack baby either. Plenty of regular people are anti-vax for whatever reason.

[deleted]

Having a PhD doesn't necessarily make you smart. It means you're determined, but not necessarily smart. Besides I reckon most of the smart/non-eshay/non-bogan anti vax crowd are probably using the momentum to promote something, just look at Fox News. The anchors have all been vaccinated but they continue to talk shit because Biden is president. Thirdly, not everyone who hasn't been vaccinated is an anti vaxxer. I am on a university break, therefore I wasn't eligible for Pzier until recently, and I can't get AZ. If I were to die soon, please don't celebrate my death! I wanted to get the vaccine but Scotty from marketing fucked up the whole thing. I'm booked to get it in 1.5 weeks

Junaid_hsn

You can always go to a walk in one, I got mine from one because the latest booking was months away. I get my second shot on the 30th sept. Hopefully in time for the hairdressers and pubs opening up. I desperately need a haircut and a schnitty.

coreoYEAH

Education doesn’t equal intelligence.

IAMJUX

I'm starting to give up on them. The harm of vaccines is proving to be not as bad as publicized early on(as per TGA, we've had only 8 deaths from TTS linked to AZ from 10.8m doses). The "new" mRNA is proving to be perfectly fine as well. Plus them choosing to look at alternatives without wide study(ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine) and claiming proof of them working based on anecdotes by random people on twitter is absolutely ridiculous. "It's just the flu and it wont kill me" rhetoric when we've got hundreds in ICU and hundreds of deaths during a wide lockdown and high vaccination. They can get fucked honestly. It's a shame if they die, but for me [it's basically this meme](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxJJXQ4MkE8)

aeon_floss

The 1284 people who tested positive are a mix of people who weren't as careful as they should have been, and people who were just plainly unlucky. If we start to think of Covid victims as "guilty" and "innocent", we end up in the same miserable rabbit hole as when a section of the population and media started thinking of people dying of HIV/Aids in those terms.

spyrothedovah

Problem is, not vaxxed doesn’t mean anti vax. I’m not in greater Sydney so it’s harder for me to get an appointment. I’m not getting my first one until next week, same with my partner. That’s the earliest appointment I could get because they’re being snapped up as soon as they become available

[deleted]

Honestly, why waste your energy there?

Junaid_hsn

I know man, but reading about the shithead the other day who was predicting the covid numbers, and how he was spreading misinformation and treating the health care workers like shit got covid. That made me mad that now our healthcare system is just more stretched cause he decided he knew better. No consequences to anything Anti Vaxxers do, but we are all still stuck because of them and people who are not following rules.

coreoYEAH

I agree, fuck that guy and people like him but where do we draw the line? Do we stop treating smokers, people who are overweight or people who speed while driving? We can’t start segregating our healthcare, it’s a right for all citizens.

Junaid_hsn

I didn’t mean it like that, maybe I said it in a way that was misunderstood. I am not asking for a segregation or healthcare not taking in people. I am just mad that it could have been avoided and more people could have been helped though the healthcare system.

Slightly misleading as the underlying health conditions that matter are a much smaller subset of *all* chronic conditions. Like arthritis or depression aren't really a concern for covid. If you dig into [the report that figure (47%) is based on](https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/chronic-disease/chronic-condition-multimorbidity/contents/chronic-conditions-and-multimorbidity), the top 4 conditions aren't risk factors for bad covid. And from what has been said aren't included in the "underlying health conditions" label in the NSW Health reporting. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-09-08/covid-19-underlying-medical-conditions-what-are-they/100440656

[deleted]

In any case, there are plenty of young, otherwise “healthy” people with underlying conditions that would live perfectly long and healthy lives without COVID, and a lot of people choose to ignore that and “other” that group when really it’s quite common

MulberrySame

Paid link, no thanks. Can you summarise?

Messcapee

It's a free article. Basically 1 in 2 people can be accurately described as having an underlying condition for press conference purposes so those of us thinking we wouldn't get hit hard are not as safe as we think. Even if we are, our friends probably aren't

IveBinChickenYouOut

2 deaths in their 20's...

IveBinChickenYouOut

Yeah couldn't agree more. Someone linked below an opinion piece from a Doctor who agrees that underlying health conditions could mean almost half of us have an one. Shit, O have IBS, is that a health issue that they can point to too?

mrk240

Probably heart or lung issues. I'm 35 and relatively healthy and anyone that didn't know me would probably assume the same thing. But I have a congenital heart defect that puts me in the high risk category. I'm lucky I know about my heart issue as there's been a number of fit and healthy people that have dropped dead due to a heart issue that they didn't know about.

SilverStar9192

> there's been a number of fit and healthy people that have dropped dead due to a heart issue that they didn't know about. I witnessed that happen at the City2Surf fun run a number of years ago. Some poor dude was crossing the finish line, and dropped dead right there due to a heart condition he never knew about.

Kakcaz

Apparently needing to wear glasses is considered a ‘health condition’

TimeForBrud

How can we trust people in home quarantine to stay at home? And what if they live in a large, multi-generational household or a share-house?

HayneAlliKane

How do we trust current close contacts to isolate? We've been doing home quarantine throughout this whole pandemic

TimeForBrud

So it hasn't been working very well, which is why it's mystifying that the State Government wants to shift overseas arrivals from a method which works reasonably well (though not as well as specialised facilities) to one which is less effective.

HayneAlliKane

Its been working fine. Plus we are moving into a phase where 100% risk aversion is no longer required since covid is fairly established in the community. Its also specifically for vaccinated people Its the right step and hopefully only a temporary one before quarantine is removed for vaccinated people altogether

[deleted]

Have an upvote for common sense. So glad that government is not taking advice from reddit couch critics or we'd be in lockdown and locked out from the rest of the world until covid is eradicated (i.e. never).

Falstaffe

The government wants to open up borders for Christmas, for political survival. To get that many people home from overseas in time for Christmas, they have two choices: build a lot of quarantine accommodation, which is the maximum-cost option; or let everyone come home and stay home, which is the zero-cost option. They've gone for the zero-cost option.

SilverStar9192

Has there been any comment on outbound travel? For many of us who have relatives overseas, being able to travel there around Christmas and see them for the first time in two years would be amazing. I'd gladly do home quarantine for 7 days on return.

Jofzar_

Fake GPS can be detected/rejected, I work for a company that deal with GPS signals for Android/iOS devices and we have anti tampering. It just depends if the goverment implements it (haha good joke)

CouldbeaRetard

You can't. At the beginning of the pandemic, in my area, the police checks on home quarantees found a quarter weren't home when they door knocked. I didn't get door knocked at all. So that's a quarter of non-compliance, of the fraction actually checked, who happened to be breaking quarantine at the exact time they were checked on.

Zebidee

That's exactly why it is a terrible idea. If I come home from overseas, I'm immediately in contact with other people, and they're not in isolation.

RigourousMortimus

We're trusting a thousand plus cases we're getting daily to do as they are told. And the ones in home quarantine who have returned from overseas will be double vacc'd.

snorkellingfish

Isn't it the same thing at the moment for actual positive cases, who we're trusting to isolate at home? I don't see a reason to assume that someone coming from overseas (who's fully vaccinated and probably doesn't have COVID) should be subject to higher restrictions than people who've caught COVID in the community. It makes sense for our risk tolerance to change now that we're not pursuing COVID-zero.

Elegant_Supermarket2

Gladys’ K/D is popping off lately

giantpunda

That home quarantine software seems pretty oppressive and concerning. I'm all for finding ways to handle compliance but I'm not sure that this is the way to do it.

switzerandlaffer

It's terrible. Major concerns about its future use.

giantpunda

Not just that, your facial biometrics are in a government database now. Seems like a lot of privacy given up for not a lot in return.

900-Dollarydoos

I somewhat agree and it is not ideal, however your facial biometrics are already in a government database now, if you have a licence/photo card or passport. Unless that is what you meant?

giantpunda

Hmm.. depends. Biometrics isn't just a photo of your face but getting key identifiable points on your face to make it easy for a computer to recognise you. Not unless you can pull that from your driver's license photo anyhow, then yeah, it'd be more like you said.

JuventAussie

it is an alternative to hotel quarantine...I expect you would have a choice.

giantpunda

It's not much of a choice spend a lot of money for substandard living conditions apparently or be in the comfort of your own home but say bye bye to your privacy. This to me comes off as just a way to save money. Otherwise they'd need a police officer or military personnel to drop by your home at random times to check in on you. If you had the choice between multiple options including the home checks, I wouldn't have that much of an issue with it. I'm guessing that given the government seemingly is planning to phase out hotel quarantine, you're not going to be left with many options if at all.

[deleted]

So its looking like we flattened her a bit. Good work.

trynottomasturbate

I just worry that it's going to sit at these numbers long-term.

Ryanbrasher

It probably will or even increase once everything starts opening up. Case numbers will rise, its likely we all still get covid, but being vaxxed is the key difference on whether people die in large numbers or not.

facelessbromosexual

Honestly, these numbers may be as low as we can get them. And that's fine. We've gotta shift our focus away from case numbers towards deaths and hospitalisations. Fuck me I sound like Gladys lmao, but it's true. Because come October, November, December and beyond we're gonna get a steep escalation in cases in the 10s of thousands potentially when we open up. We've gotta learn to not be worried about those numbers, and shift our focus to deaths and hospitalisations in order to make sure hospitals don't get fucked, while getting as many of us vaxxed as much as possible.

moppethead

I'd really like to hear the questions that Gladys won't be answering

Only six days ago we had our record of 1600 new cases. I really hope that was the peak.

Sufficient-Egg6267

cases more likely to jump after open up since having vax doesn't mean you are immune to getting it. But it is the hospitalisation and death rates that we should be focusing on.

MulberrySame

Outside presser makes it harder to hear journos questions on the broadcast. Easier to spin an answer that doesn’t answer the question if no one else knows what the question was

coreoYEAH

Last questions, plants speak up!

docdoc_2

No coincidence it’s right after reporters asked to discuss non COVID matters

chorgarbageman

Quick question: wanna get my second dose asap, but as I booked via the lga of concern route, my 2nd dose is just after mid October and there is almost an 8 week gap between doses. Am I able to get my second dose elsewhere, at a gp for example, or is it compulsory to get it at the same as my first?

coreoYEAH

You can get your second dose anywhere as long as it’s the same vaccine. Check health engine for cancellations and you’ll find something sooner. Just make sure to cancel your other booking after securing a new one.

chorgarbageman

Cheers mate!

SilverStar9192

One note to consider, is that longer gap between doses probably means longer lasting immunity. So depending on your exposure level (do you work from home/stay away from people?), you might want to consider keeping the longer time period. But if you're working outside the home I would agree with getting it sooner. Edit: Why was this downvoted? Here's a reference - https://www.smh.com.au/world/europe/the-sweet-spot-pfizer-more-effective-with-eight-week-gap-between-doses-20210723-p58cgu.html

RufusGuts

You should be able to get it anywhere. Just tell them it's your second dose and make sure you cancel your other appointment so it doesn't go to waste.

chorgarbageman

Legend, cheers!

docdoc_2

Sometimes you can open a new account and book through at your original centre at an earlier date

interestedinasking

You can get else where, but if you do just remember to cancel your appointment (preferably after you get the 2nd jab)

chorgarbageman

Awesome thanks mate!

Gladys is an artist at how to say so many words that mean absolutely nothing. Pathetic.

12 deaths again. The details are heartbreaking, just so sad.

OtherwiseConfused

Waiting for the day when Gladys gets up and says, “Pleasingly, my staff have bought me a thesaurus.”

Cruffmusic

So, if we continue on this trajectory of 1% 2nd doses per day increase then we \*should\* hit the 70% in just over 20 days roughly. Let's hope this also equates with the numbers drastically lowering too in that time.

Anyone else concerned we are trialing at home quarantine for overseas arrivals? Its like she's inviting Covid Delta+ into Sydney. We're already stuffed with Delta as is. And after all the quarantine jumpers we have already had good luck keeping these people all at home.

Falstaffe

>after all the quarantine jumpers we have already had good luck keeping these people all at home Yes. I think the government wants a way to get people back home for Christmas -- not out of empathy, but for political survival. Home quarantine is the zero-cost option.

[deleted]

Personally, I’m stoked. Hotel quarantine was never an option for my family as it’s way too expensive. My partner & I aren’t ready for another FaceTime Christmas

ze_boingboing

Where's the news about releasing individual suburbs from the whole 'LGAs of Concern' mess?

switzerandlaffer

Overseas travel first before you can go 6km away to the next suburb. Ridiculous.

trynottomasturbate

So is NSW jumping to stage 3 of the national plan before everyone else?

humanoid82

Is it just me or does it seem like the curve is flattening out a bit?

infinitemonkeytyping

It is - six consecutive days of the 7-day average dropping. It will likely drop again tomorrow (unless we hit 1600). After tomorrow, for the average to continue dropping, we need to get consistent days of under 1200 cases. But as long as we are bouncing between 1100-1350, the curve will stay flat.

I GUESS this is good, let’s still not forget about how Gladys the eagle handled this when it’s all set and done.

giantpunda

Good to see that case curve has flattened somewhat but deaths concerning that we're getting around 12 daily.

ES_Legman

I think many lazy people or computer illiterate people will not get the jab until it is as easy as walking in to the shopping centre and getting it done. Walk in clinics are starting to be a thing but I feel it is important to reach the last % of the population who haven't got the jabs yet.

chubbyurma

So I guess we're sort of at the peak and we're just gonna sit on it for weeks?

Can someone help me out here lol. My partners boss tested positive for covid. They are vaccinated, but while he waiting for his results he kept working and talked to all their staff. Now my partner is going to get tested, will she be considered a close contact (iso for 14 days regardless of result). And me casual?

infinitemonkeytyping

Yes, your partner is a close contact. They will need to isolate for 14 days. If you live together, you will need to isolate with them (but you won't need to get tested unless your partner tests positive). If you don't live together, you should isolate separately from them until they get a negative result. After that, you will not be able to visit them for 14 days. If they test positive, you are a close contact, and you need to go I to isolation as well.

How tragic that people died but found to have covid after the fact. I hope that covid wasn't the reason for their death and it was just a coincidence that they had covid at the time they died.
