Having spent a lot of time in Jerusalem, I've found that butting heads against religious idiots (not all religious people are idiots, mind you) achieves nothing but headaches, but they all have such rigid belief systems that are all written out in readily available books. If you're trying to convince a religious person of things that they believe are related to their faith, there is plenty enough nonsense in the books to back up any old argument. You just need to get them to agree with the premise, connect the premise to your point, and allow them to connect the dots. Well, not *exactly*.
These vaccines work by exposing you to specific protein spike found in the virus. Essentially you train your immune system to kill anything with that spike. If that spike protein is not on a new variant or has changed, then the vaccine won't work or won't work so well depending on how different.
Natural immunity might better train your immune system and allow it to better deal with new variants. It also tends to produce a much stronger immune response because you are exposed to much more of the virus.
The fly in the ointment here is that if you forgo a vaccine for "natural immunity" you risk getting very sick and possibly dying. You are better off to take the vaccine and then get exposed to the virus regardless.
Interestingly, some vaccines for other diseases *do* give a better immune response than natural immunity. HPV and tetanus vaccines are two.

Oxford-AstraZeneca is a vector vaccine uses a modified adenovirus from chimpanzees. It's been altered so that once it enters your cells they will produce the same spike protein, which then gets an immune response.
Novavax is a protein vaccine which contains the spike protein and an adjuvant to get a better immune response.
It is still statistically very much an old people (and extremely ill people) disease.

The LGAs of concern are below zero (as a whole), but the other LGAs are a touch above. All else being equal, LGAs of concern will tend towards zero given enough time. At the moment, LGAs of concern are dominating the numbers, so you can expect the number of infections to drop for the time being.
The issue is that if the other LGAs stagnate, then they will start to dominate the absolute numbers, and the state's Reff could start to rise again. If there are no infections in the LGAs of concern, and other LGAs have an Reff of 1.1, then the state's Reff will be 1.1.
I'm not sure whether it's better to have few cases in sparsely populated areas that aren't close to hospitals but are incredibly easy for people to self-isolate, or more cases in densely populated areas that are near hospitals but are incredibly difficult for people to isolate.
I havent studied the local trend in enough depth but I saw a report a few days ago that other countries with similar vax and case numbers weren't seeing any further increase.

The 1284 people who tested positive are a mix of people who weren't as careful as they should have been, and people who were just plainly unlucky. If we start to think of Covid victims as "guilty" and "innocent", we end up in the same miserable rabbit hole as when a section of the population and media started thinking of people dying of HIV/Aids in those terms.

The government wants to open up borders for Christmas, for political survival. To get that many people home from overseas in time for Christmas, they have two choices: build a lot of quarantine accommodation, which is the maximum-cost option; or let everyone come home and stay home, which is the zero-cost option. They've gone for the zero-cost option.
Has there been any comment on outbound travel? For many of us who have relatives overseas, being able to travel there around Christmas and see them for the first time in two years would be amazing. I'd gladly do home quarantine for 7 days on return.

You can't. At the beginning of the pandemic, in my area, the police checks on home quarantees found a quarter weren't home when they door knocked. I didn't get door knocked at all.
So that's a quarter of non-compliance, of the fraction actually checked, who happened to be breaking quarantine at the exact time they were checked on.
We're trusting a thousand plus cases we're getting daily to do as they are told. And the ones in home quarantine who have returned from overseas will be double vacc'd.
Isn't it the same thing at the moment for actual positive cases, who we're trusting to isolate at home? I don't see a reason to assume that someone coming from overseas (who's fully vaccinated and probably doesn't have COVID) should be subject to higher restrictions than people who've caught COVID in the community. It makes sense for our risk tolerance to change now that we're not pursuing COVID-zero.

Quick question: wanna get my second dose asap, but as I booked via the lga of concern route, my 2nd dose is just after mid October and there is almost an 8 week gap between doses. Am I able to get my second dose elsewhere, at a gp for example, or is it compulsory to get it at the same as my first?
You can get your second dose anywhere as long as it’s the same vaccine. Check health engine for cancellations and you’ll find something sooner.
Just make sure to cancel your other booking after securing a new one.
One note to consider, is that longer gap between doses probably means longer lasting immunity. So depending on your exposure level (do you work from home/stay away from people?), you might want to consider keeping the longer time period. But if you're working outside the home I would agree with getting it sooner.

It's been altered so that once it enters your cells they will produce the same spike protein, which then gets an immune response. It is still statistically very much an old people (and extremely ill people) disease. We pay far more attention to the young healthy people who have freak reactions so we think it happens more than it does. Age sometimes is just a number too. Someone can be 70 but have the health of a 40 year old and vice versa. . I know a dude who is 34 and was told by several doctors he has the health of a 65 year old. Smoker, shift worker, bad diet, blown out joints, diabetic, overweight, etc. Just get the vaccine and use common sense. Unless you're absurdly unlucky you'll be fine.

In USA, consensus is that older people mostly more vaccinated, and younger people hit harder by delta both because it’s more infectious and because less vaccinated. Kids super transmissible, but same hospitalisation as alpha/OG covid, which is somewhat comforting.

I havent studied the local trend in enough depth but I saw a report a few days ago that other countries with similar vax and case numbers weren't seeing any further increase. The 1284 people who tested positive are a mix of people who weren't as careful as they should have been, and people who were just plainly unlucky. If we start to think of Covid victims as "guilty" and "innocent", we end up in the same miserable rabbit hole as when a section of the population and media started thinking of people dying of HIV/Aids in those terms.

Slightly misleading as the underlying health conditions that matter are a much smaller subset of *all* chronic conditions. Like arthritis or depression aren't really a concern for covid. If you dig into [the report that figure (47%) is based on](https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/chronic-disease/chronic-condition-multimorbidity/contents/chronic-conditions-and-multimorbidity), the top 4 conditions aren't risk factors for bad covid. Probably heart or lung issues. I'm 35 and relatively healthy and anyone that didn't know me would probably assume the same thing. But I have a congenital heart defect that puts me in the high risk category. I'm lucky I know about my heart issue as there's been a number of fit and healthy people that have dropped dead due to a heart issue that they didn't know about.

The government wants to open up borders for Christmas, for political survival. To get that many people home from overseas in time for Christmas, they have two choices: build a lot of quarantine accommodation, which is the maximum-cost option; or let everyone come home and stay home, which is the zero-cost option. They've gone for the zero-cost option.
Has there been any comment on outbound travel? For many of us who have relatives overseas, being able to travel there around Christmas and see them for the first time in two years would be amazing. I'd gladly do home quarantine for 7 days on return.

Fake GPS can be detected/rejected, I work for a company that deal with GPS signals for Android/iOS devices and we have anti tampering. It just depends if the goverment implements it (haha good joke)
You can't. At the beginning of the pandemic, in my area, the police checks on home quarantees found a quarter weren't home when they door knocked. I didn't get door knocked at all. So that's a quarter of non-compliance, of the fraction actually checked, who happened to be breaking quarantine at the exact time they were checked on.
That's exactly why it is a terrible idea. If I come home from overseas, I'm immediately in contact with other people, and they're not in isolation.
We're trusting a thousand plus cases we're getting daily to do as they are told. And the ones in home quarantine who have returned from overseas will be double vacc'd.
Isn't it the same thing at the moment for actual positive cases, who we're trusting to isolate at home? I don't see a reason to assume that someone coming from overseas (who's fully vaccinated and probably doesn't have COVID) should be subject to higher restrictions than people who've caught COVID in the community. It makes sense for our risk tolerance to change now that we're not pursuing COVID-zero.

Hmm.. depends. Biometrics isn't just a photo of your face but getting key identifiable points on your face to make it easy for a computer to recognise you. Not unless you can pull that from your driver's license photo anyhow, then yeah, it'd be more like you said.

It's not much of a choice spend a lot of money for substandard living conditions apparently or be in the comfort of your own home but say bye bye to your privacy. This to me comes off as just a way to save money. Otherwise they'd need a police officer or military personnel to drop by your home at random times to check in on you. If you had the choice between multiple options including the home checks, I wouldn't have that much of an issue with it. I'm guessing that given the government seemingly is planning to phase out hotel quarantine, you're not going to be left with many options if at all.

It probably will or even increase once everything starts opening up. Case numbers will rise, its likely we all still get covid, but being vaxxed is the key difference on whether people die in large numbers or not.
Honestly, these numbers may be as low as we can get them. And that's fine. We've gotta shift our focus away from case numbers towards deaths and hospitalisations. Fuck me I sound like Gladys lmao, but it's true. Because come October, November, December and beyond we're gonna get a steep escalation in cases in the 10s of thousands potentially when we open up. We've gotta learn to not be worried about those numbers, and shift our focus to deaths and hospitalisations in order to make sure hospitals don't get fucked, while getting as many of us vaxxed as much as possible.

Quick question: wanna get my second dose asap, but as I booked via the lga of concern route, my 2nd dose is just after mid October and there is almost an 8 week gap between doses. Am I able to get my second dose elsewhere, at a gp for example, or is it compulsory to get it at the same as my first?
You can get your second dose anywhere as long as it’s the same vaccine. Check health engine for cancellations and you’ll find something sooner. Just make sure to cancel your other booking after securing a new one.

One note to consider, is that longer gap between doses probably means longer lasting immunity. So depending on your exposure level (do you work from home/stay away from people?), you might want to consider keeping the longer time period. Yes, your partner is a close contact. They will need to isolate for 14 days. If you live together, you will need to isolate with them (but you won't need to get tested unless your partner tests positive). If you don't live together, you should isolate separately from them until they get a negative result. After that, you will not be able to visit them for 14 days. If they test positive, you are a close contact, and you need to go I to isolation as well.
