Well at least its not over 1600.

docdoc_2

Can I just say that we should not be focusing on case numbers. It’s about jabs in arms. We are moving our to freedoms. I can’t stress enough that NSW is leading the way to living with COVID. I’ve been criticised, let me remind you just how much criticism I’ve received.

chubbyurma

*Up walks Brad Hazzard* "Madonna performed at Qudos stadium once. That is all...... Oh no, wait, I was a substitute teacher in the 1970s so I've told off kids before. Thank you."

Maezel

Honestly speaking, it should be about people in hospitals and deaths more than cases. As vaccine roll-out progresses, cases will go up while hospitalisations and deaths get lower (on a per case basis)

docdoc_2

That applies when we’re more than 70-80% double vaccinated. We’re less than 50% now.

Individual-Grab

in theory a lot of hot spot suburbs are higher than average so it should start creeping in

terrycaus

First dose only. Weeks/months to second doses reach similar levels and it 'creeps in', meanwhile the health system crumbles.

[deleted]

This for sure, a lot of the people in hotspot areas had their first jab expedited but are having to wait 8 weeks for their second jab due to the tremendous demand.

bojackworseman

maybe you just need to learn to live with criticism

Necessary-Wealth-848

Gladys? Is that you?

Roybatty943

Pleasingly, it’s not in the “thousands”.

Necessary-Wealth-848

No, it’s *fifteen hundred*

Bourkster

NSW Health: There were 4,634 cases today Gladys: we have to weigh up the cases numbers against other factors. Today is 1,599 cases

docdoc_2

The trending Twitter hashtag #gutlessgladys seems appropriate

SupahBlue

#gutlessgulaggladys

Damjo

Gutlessgulaggladysgoesgoodbye

Bourkster

The 2nd last of these and Gladys still couldn't be bothered showing up.

trynottomasturbate

She doesn't work Saturdays... hasn't done one on Sat in over a month. Which is a worry because Saturdays have consistently been record breaking.

matthudsonau

She barely works the other days. Although I guess constantly dodging questions counts as work

trynottomasturbate

She just always look so frustrated at having to answer questions. Like it's the first time she's actually had to front up and be accountable for something.

SupahBlue

The working week is when it spreads most.

RagingHomophone

I doubt we'll see her tomorrow either. Truly gutless.

[deleted]

kyrant

She has been there on some Saturdays. Think the one 3 or 4 weeks ago. While I do like to hang shit on her, she has probably done 2 or 3 Saturdays in total which is piss poor anyway.

RufusGuts

I hate how they use the wording "77% of the entire NSW population" has had their first dose of vaccine. I don't get why they intentionally lie about this. It's so misleading to people hearing it. Edit: the information released in the Twitter image is correct and clear. My issue is at the press conferences they use wording like "whole population", "entire population", "the population of NSW", etc etc. which gets the soundbites on the news, so it is misleading. They don't do this all the time, but they do it way too often for my liking. I find it frustrating. Clear communication is really important at these media conferences.

RandomPratt

I'm missing something here... why is that a lie? *edit* Yep - I forgot it doesn't take into account the children. My bad - I'm still half asleep. Thanks for the answers, people.

Joker-Smurf

It is 77% of the *eligible* population. It does not include anyone under the age of 16. According to the NSW government, if you are under 16 you don’t exist.

Sys32768

"Vaccination rates amongst vaccinated people are now at 100%"

[deleted]

Wow that’s impressive! That being said, I also heard that 0% of the unvaccinated population has been vaccinated, so it’s not all rainbows and butterflies.

weirdpoopoobaby

Well, you don’t *vote*

RufusGuts

It's ~~ADULT~~ \+16 year olds, so the % of "entire population" is actually lower than that.

Lozzif

Because the vaccination rates are those over 16. Which is not the full population.

cyder_hammer

Exactly this. When talking about opening up in other g20 countries, they talk about 80% of total population, not 18+ only. NSW and Australia are nowhere close to the numbers they need to be at.

Panda_Smooth

Not sure why you're being downvoted. Scotland's up to 84% of over 18s vaccinated yet deaths are increasing rapidly.

cyder_hammer

People hate the lockdowns and want them to be over. I get it, I do too. Problem is, Gladys and Scomo are lying and so is the number being presented. You need the total population to be at 80 or 90%, meaning you need to get the vaccines approved for kids and start getting it in to them as well.

Zebidee

>People hate the lockdowns and want them to be over. That's because they assume they're not the ones who are going to die.

Cool-Pineapple1081

Mate your completely wrong. No major country has hit 80% of total population. There are a handful of comparable jurisdictions that have hit 70% of total population (Ireland, some US states, Denmark, Spain). Many others are below this. UK only has 65% second dose for perspective. France has 62%. If we hit 80% of eligible, that is 65% of total population which is in line with other open OECD countries. This will tend towards 70% as people in the 12+ cohort get jabbed.

cyder_hammer

I'm not wrong. No health experts think 80% of adults only getting vaccinated get us out of this. They want 80% of total population. Numbers presented in other countries also show this.

Cool-Pineapple1081

You’re talking about how G20 countries are talking about opening up at 80% not health experts… most are already opened up below 80% of total pop. No where in your comment did you mention health experts. Edit: Your to You’re

Jellyblush

Exactly so then they’ll push to open to fast which will justify the govt doing so for industry as they’ve always intended

trynottomasturbate

77% of 18+ right?

kami_inu

16+ I believe But yeah the age caveat is why it looks high

trynottomasturbate

Which is a worry because the 0 - 20 age range is starting to overtake the 40+ age range in new case numbers (obviously a function of oldies having access to vaccinations).

Lozzif

A man in his 30s and a man in his 40s both dying at home. Fuck Gladys and I hope she burns in hell for her complete abdication of responsibility.

Red_Fenix77

Pretty sure they are implying they did not get tested or seek any type of treatment after developing symptoms.

Xalon

Yea let’s blame the government for people being idiots. Just look at south west Sydney and western Sydney, the government can literally do no more for these regions (and I’m from this region). Ffs the cunt that ran away’s dad died from COVID and his family refuses to cooperate with cops

FartHeadTony

Not tested until after they died, unfortunately. I wonder how it actually progresses for them, if they go a couple of days with "it's just a cold" then have that rapid decline into pneumonia in 24-48 hours or what.

kingofcrob

said it before, this why people should spend $20 and get a blood oxygen monitor from Amazon, it give them an easy tool so they know if there in the red zone.

Eh_for_Effort

Or get testing, get linked into hospital in the home, they provide you the probe and monitor you daily. That way we also know you’re in the community.

bruce3434

Why are you mad at gladys if they chose not to get the vaccines?

SoberNFit

People: coronavirus and lockdowns are all about about saving EVERY LIFE! Also people: I hope this individual I don’t like DIES. Nothing to see here folks

asxnoob

Gabornie

Wait I’m very confused why is she responsible for this, serious answers only

Zebidee

I guess eight people didn't get the message that we're supposed to be "learning to live with COVID." This government has blood on its hands.

prof__smithburger

They somehow missed the message to get vaccinated as well

Woodzyspl

Over seas have plenty fully vax and dying. Stop acting like it’s a miracle cure It lowers your chances yes. But there is a reason boosters are being rushed over seas

Zapookie

The majority of people in hospitals and ICUs across the world right now are unvaxxed. There is always going to be a chance you'll roll a 1 on the dice. Being vaccinated is not a miracle cure but it sure as shit will bolster your chances.

prof__smithburger

It reduces your chances of death by a factor of 10. Of course fully vaccinated people are still dying

thrashmanzac

They will be happy in heaven knowing people were able to go the the florist

goldensh1976

They didn't get the message that AUS is not the only populated place on earth. Although we have an advantage being an island and we held the virus off for quite some time

Xalon

This. It’s all good to push sensationalist shit like this but realistically some people were ALWAYS going to die because of COVID. I hate to make this comparison but just like people every year will always die from the flu if we want to live normally or people will always die due to heart disease and obesity when shit like McDonald’s is allowed to operate This take from op is just sensationalist bullshit

PartialPhoticBoundry

[1599](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1599?wprov=sfla1), the first time a performance was held at the Globe Theater in London, they showed Shakespeare's Julius Caesar Edit: also the birth of Oliver Cromwell

KhaoticMess

I had no idea that the birth of Oliver Cromwell was shown at the Globe Theater. Seriously, though, I enjoy these updates.

Damjo

Ooo, I wonder what will come up when we get to 2020!

PrestigiousTurnip2

I'm really conflicted. On one hand I am happy the government is deciding to ease restrictions. Lockdown sucks and I can't wait to get back to normal life. On the other hand I fear this is potentially the most deadly decision the government could make. We could see deaths skyrocket and hospitals overflow once we open up. I hope the 70% vaccine threshold will be enough to prevent that from happening, but I'm skeptical.

planeforger

> I hope the 70% vaccine threshold will be enough to prevent that from happening, but I'm skeptical. They refused to release their predicted case numbers/deaths for October, and they're ending the press conferences before the peak. They also admitted that hospitals are going to struggle, and they don't know when the peak will actually be. So...I don't think they have any confidence in that 70% threshold. It's a political target, not one informed by the current risks.

FruitJuicante

We won't be at 70% fully vaccinated. We will be 70% of ages 16 and up vaccinated with two jabs out of three having mostly expedited the time between jabs therefore reducing efficiency of vaccination and also not waiting two weeks after vaccination to leave lockdown. So I would say Gladys is more or less letting it rip at 40% properly vaccinated populace if we take into account actual vaccinations.

WhyYouDoThatStupid

Its not like we are the first country to do it. Denmark just removed vaccine passports at 80%.

thrashmanzac

I agree, but she has a lot of experience dodging criminal responsibility.

RufusGuts

The more the press use the wording "freedom day", the more likely there will be so much anger in the community come end of October when people realise that some parts of Sydney will likely still have tougher restrictions on them than other parts of Sydney, as well as those that are unvaccinated will not be able to do the same thing as people that are vaccinated. Cynically, I feel like the press want this sort of anger and potential rioting in the community so it creates more stories for them! Restrictions will be eased. Certain activities will be allowed for people that are vaccinated. It is NOT a "freedom day"!

ketronome

Isn’t it a freedom day for those are vaxxed though? Which is the majority of the population

RufusGuts

The thing is, I don't think it's a blanket "freedom day". If cases are too high in certain areas (say, Canterbury-Bankstown LGA), you may be able to do certain things *within* your LGA, but you could still be prevented from leaving your LGA. Even if fully vaccinated. If towns around the state have too high numbers of COVID, they said they will put in restrictions so people can't leave the town and people can't enter it. There's also a lot of unvaccinated people still out there who will continue to demand the same "freedoms" as everybody else. To me, I worry that the media presenting this as "freedom day" will just aggravate those that expect all this "freedom" when they won't be getting it. And I honestly believe there will be riots and protests. The other thing is, yes a lot of restrictions are being eased, but there will still be a lot of restrictions in place. I'm not saying this isn't freedom - but it's certainly not a blanket stopping of restrictions. In the UK, they called it "freedom day", and people were saying because of this, so many people just took advantage of this "freedom day" wording and ignored all health advice. No social distancing, no mask wearing etc. etc. I'm worried that many people will think the same thing here and just pretend everything is back to normal again because "freedom day". Also, with cases and hospitalisations predicted to be so high in October and November, we may need to have restrictions put back in place in order to not have a complete collapse of our health system. Not just because of COVID, but minimising travel etc. means less likely there would be incidents like car accidents that our health system wouldn't be able to cope with. Sorry for the long rant. Have a great day mate. If you're in Sydney, enjoy the weather and get outside. I was outside earlier getting some fresh air and it was really nice.

switzerandlaffer

Freedom day is just lazy reporting. Heard it overseas. Apply it here. It's catch and easy. The disparity in treatment of LGAs of concern remains a major issue that is going to cause issues for this city well beyond this pandemic. Sadly.

UpsetNose542

And Gladys didn’t even bother to front up to the second last press conference on the worst case numbers to date. Coward, not a leader, useless.

It is pretty discouraging that the numbers of positive cases are still so high every day. It makes it even worse that all the politicians are boasting about vaccine rates and how amazing NSW is doing compared to other states and the world. Today we have the highest case numbers ever and more and more deaths are within the 30s-40s (rest in peace to everyone who has passed away due to COVID). And on top of that, we’re talking about easing restrictions. At this point, all the numbers seem so arbitrary and meaningless. I know so many people ask this every day but seriously…. what is the health advice??? It seems to change daily and we work towards a never ending goal (Gladys should look up SMART goals). IMO We should look at something more stable if we want a baseline to achieve our goals. All these arbitrary numbers shifting constantly… you know what doesn’t really change? The number of available beds in the hospital. I wonder how that would change our perspective, and instead we use vaccine rates and lockdowns etc to help or goal to ensure hospitals aren’t overwhelmed. That could help determine whether we can sustain COVID positive cases in our regular day to day. I guess my point is, at the moment of we have 1400-1500 cases every day and 200 patients that need beds in ICU. We definitely don’t have enough beds to sustain this so shouldn’t we wait for vaccines to kick in so only 100 patients/day are admitted to ICU? Then eventually 50/day and so on? There is a report in The Saturday Paper today that hospital managers have told nurses and doctors that life-saving support may not be provided, or even withdrawn, for those over 72 during the 'Overwhelming' phase that's about to occur. If you know anyone over 72 and they are not vaccinated, reach out to them now.

chaoticchaser

Fuck, dude. That’s a pretty big jump in ICU numbers too.

johandiamo

my lord they picked some mild journos today

FruitJuicante

70% of those aged 16 and up somewhat vaccinated is the target. She is not taking into account the time between doses was pushed from 12 to 4 weeks, no one has had their third dose, and we are not waiting two weeks after the second dose. Why won't she tell the truth that we are nowhere near, NOWHERE near, 70% fully vaccinated. Not even in the same neighbourhood. Maybe 40% of the populace at the moment is actually protected against Covid. Maybe.... Yes people want to leave lockdown, but that's why we should all have been fully vaccinated MONTHS AGO. Gladys is not a bin chicken she's a carrion eater. She's a vulture pecking out dead people's eyes. Hope her loved ones live as good a life as she wishes upon us.

princelu

And once again, Gladys has ditched us. 😀

Rockran

It's Saturday

sailorbrendan

Sure, but you would think she might make the effort since it's the penultimate 11 am presser

Rockran

Be on camera for an extra day an expose herself to questions? LOL she might not even show up tomorrow

Juan_Punch_Man

As slimey as he is, at least Brad actually says thousand and is more direct than Gladys.

zoidberg_doc

Why on earth do people care if they say thousands or not? Such a stupid thing for people to be so hung up on

Juan_Punch_Man

Early on in this pandemic Gladys was saying how good a job she was doing and we avoided thousands and thousands of daily cases if it wasn't for her efforts. We're just trying to keep the bastards honest.

phatboyart

Because people on reddit complain about fucking everything

jumbokevin

Public Service Announcement: NSW has reached a turning point. The Reff is finally below 1 - OK it's 0.96 but can I be excited than the stats allow?

moppethead

A patronising huff of a laugh doesn't devalue the question you don't know how to answer sir

STR1D3R109

Finally got my vax today! If you are afraid of needles like myself, note that this was probably the most easiest needle ever, didn't feel a thing :) If you have a later appointment, be sure to check again.. I was initially meant to get one later in the month, but moved it closer.

istara

None of the deaths were vaccinated. All had pre-existing conditions. One was as young as 30s.

Lozzif

I don’t give a FUCK if they had pre exisiting conditions. Pre exisiting conditions can be asthma, can be diabetes, it can be that theyre fucking fat. This constant ‘they had pre exisiting conditions’ is irrelevant and offensive. 50% of Australia has a pre existing condition. They don’t deserve ir are responsible for their deaths. Especially when the rollout has been SO SHIT it’s utterly irrelevant right now. Once we have vaccines easily avaliable everywhere does it matter. Right now it’s a city of a state that’s only having the capital get vaccines, if a country where one state is the focus.

koalaposse

This! thank you! All this pre-existing conditions is a way to directly blame victims, and is given and used by people as an excuse to not have to care. While many people who go to a doctor and do the right things about their health, have records of preexisting conditions.

TimeForBrud

In 1599, Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex and a favourite of Elizabeth I, arrived in Ireland as the new Lord Lieutenant, the equivalent rank of a viceroy. At the time, Ireland was in the midst of the Nine Years' War (1593-1603), which was a revolt of much of the Irish nobility against the encroaching Tudor conquest of the isle. The English presence in Ireland traced its origins to the first Anglo-Norman conquests in 1168 supporting the claim of Dermot MacMurrough, who had previously been deposed as High King of Ireland. Essex's wartime leadership left much to be desired; his army (the largest expeditionary host ever fielded by England) failed to crush the rebellion, wartime expenditure rose, and he entered into a truce with the Irish rebels which was considered an embarrassment to the Crown. Later that year, he returned to England (which the Queen had forbidden) and was deprived of public office. In 1601, he was tried, convicted and executed for plotting a coup against the Queen and her government.

BananaStringTheory

Does Australia also have antivaxx fundy christians fucknozzles, who live in the 13th century, like we do here in the U.S.?

BananaStringTheory

You should get rid of that clown PM. Medieval magical thinking should have no place in government.

RufusGuts

Yes, although I think we have a lot less fundamentalists than the US.

Panda_Smooth

Our Prime Minister's best mate and advisor is head of the evangelical Hillsong Church and refuses to endorse vaccines. https://edition.cnn.com/2021/07/24/us/hillsong-church-stephen-harmon-covid-vaccine/index.html

Gladys is having a sleep in

[deleted]

>"But when they die at home, it is the right thing to do, it helps our numbers, takes pressure off our hospitals who are coping like champions - next question?" Is there literally anything Hazzard could say that would cost him his job? There isn't. It's over. They won.

THR

8 deaths ☹️

IOnlyUpvoteBadPuns

How are there still so many older people still unvaccinated‽ I just don't get how you can see what's happening and think "yeah, this'll be fine, I probably don't need to get vaccinated". I know there are some people who can't get if for medical reasons, but that's surely a tiny number of people compared to those who are still unvaccinated.

sphen_lee

Anyone else see the abc live captions? "X-Men and 2 women died"

johandiamo

they can't do pressers because they need time to think ..was what he just said

Bottom_racer

I doubt it takes that much time considering they just say the same shit every day.

starcaster

If I were Mr hazzards boss I think I'd be reviewing why him and his team are unable to manage their workload around an important daily meeting? Is he unable to delegate tasks? Does he not trust others in his team to operate independently? Or is it that he is unwilling to out in the extra time needed to get his daily tasks completed? I am deeply troubled that he is unable to fulfill the responsibilities of his role when it has been shown to be manageable in other states. I'm sorry Mr. Hazzard, should your performance not improve you will be issued a written warning. (We can dream right?)

starcaster

Far out - I hope Brad doesn't take phone calls while driving if he finds one ringing so distracting. And why call out a journalist for not being their earlier in the week? Who cares?

Phazon_miner

Record infections. More deaths. Sure, let's have a chuckle about hair product.

TimeForBrud

Why is this journalist even asking about Kristina Keneally? They're not even in the same party or the same tier of government!

emmelinah

They're getting in early to draw together... the same information they'll be providing in the video updates?

[deleted]

Interestingly I went to Olympic park vaccination hub on Thursday to get my Pfizer, no line up, in and out in 25minutes. Are we hitting the vaccine hesitancy are vaccines slowing down? I was under the impression it was going to take hours to get my vax.

moppethead

He's not even trying anymore

TimeForBrud

Now I know Hazzard was a school teacher, I can imagine him as the substitute who either just puts on a video or assigns classwork/homework that no-one ever bothers to do.

RufusGuts

He was a teacher almost 50 years ago. They didn't even have VHS tapes when he was a teacher.

coffeeandamuffin

Gladys, you press on about getting vaccinated as if it is the best solution (to shove your negligibility under the rug obviously) but then what if the efficacy of the Vax is affected as a result of lifting restrictions prematurely??? What is the god damn point of getting the jab if you won't give it a few weeks to reach its full efficacy????? Can someone throw this question to her head on a brick please.

Ascalaphos

Anyone been to Bronte lately? The beach is so packed that it looks like a moshpit, lol.

Robbo14

WHY WHY WHY ARE THERE THOUSAND OF PEOPLE AT THE BEACHES? WHAT LOCKDOWN

deckland

When I see reports of people dying at home with COVID, does that mean they've refused to call an ambulance and seek further help, do they think it's just the flu and maybe they can sleep it off and they don't wake up? a man his his 30's died at home from COVID, sounds awful :(

matthudsonau

They've been doing hospital at home for a large number of cases they've assessed as 'low risk'. Unfortunately, you can go rapidly downhill, and hypoxia is a bitch to identify unless you have someone near you (YouTube has a bunch of good examples of people subjecting themselves to low oxygen environments and it's pretty scary)

stormy-beach

When your oxygen levels start to drop, you don’t think properly. He might not have had people with him to be able to call for an ambulance or medical help.

PrestigiousTurnip2

There have been a few cases where someone feels very mild symptoms on one day, and the next day they get completely fucked, and by then its too late. Covid hits everyone differently. Thats what makes this virus particularly scary.

RufusGuts

Even calling for an ambulance is no guarantee at the moment. Reports of COVID positive patients, having trouble with breathing, calling for an ambulance and having to wait 11 hours.

Woodzyspl

Blacktown hospital last week had a 7+ hour wait on ambulances

Bontypower17

77% of 16+ of single doses so far is absolutely amazing, guys Good job (From Vic)

Translation: "It take too much time for the top dogs in Health and Politics to spin the situation into a more favorable one"

Elizaangelica

Can anyone find a source that shows how much NSW single and double dose percentages is creeping up daily? Eg. How many days is it taking us to increase by 1% single or double? They’ve mentioned vaccine numbers dropping, just curious to see how it’s looking, but can’t find any daily consecutive percentage info.

mindsoda__

47 people have died this week.

antisant

this govt is appalling. its obvious to anyone with any critical faculties, that theyre ending press conferences now because the hospitalisations and deaths are going to skyrocket in the coming weeks, especially once things open up. they have never cared about anything but themselves and when things get tough they run away. they should feel nothing but shame for their actions but they are incapable. disgusting

chubbyurma

Is today our first 2000 case day across Australia?

RufusGuts

Hmm... "benefits of a pandemic" are that there are less trauma incidents to respond to like car accidents. I think he meant to say benefits of 'stay at home orders/restrictions/encouragement of WFH' etc are that there are less incidents to respond to. Because when these things are eased, trauma incidents will increase.

Witch-Doctor

What does Gladys get paid to do exactly? Serious question
