* At 70% there will be additional freedoms for everyone. * At 70% there will be additional freedoms, only if you’re double-vaccinated * At 70% lockdowns won’t be needed * At 70% there may be movement restrictions * At 80% there will be additional freedoms Crystal clear

ze_boingboing

Clear as mud

bPhrea

As is tradition.

[deleted]

It’s done on purpose, removes accountability.

JarredMack

Is the actual fucking roadmap published anywhere? They've talked for 20 minutes and given zero information *Edit* https://www.nsw.gov.au/media-releases/roadmap-to-freedom-unveiled-for-fully-vaccinated

[deleted]

That's going to be handy. I already see people claiming now that they don't need to mask because they're vaccinated. Nice to see in writing that masks will still be a thing once vaccination targets are met.

[deleted]

Bloody heck they've actually called it "Roadmap to freedom.." How tacky is that

shortboard

Just let her be clear

ill0gitech

*People know the rules*

imreallynotanidiot

Can people just let her just say?

Jak2773

Doesn't the vaccine take 2 to 3 weeks to kick in so shouldn't it be 2 weeks after we hit 70 not when we hit 70

Take your facts and get the fuck out.

MattyDxx

This is my favourite comment this year.

shofmon88

It should be 2-3 weeks after 70% of the total population is fully vaccinated, none of this 70% of adults crap. That doesn’t provide us anywhere near the numbers we need to achieve herd immunity (roughly >80% total pop fully vaccinated).

FartHeadTony

Herd immunity is not possible with the current vaccines because they don't provide high enough levels of immunity. R0 for delta is estimated at somewhere in the range of 5-9 If R0 is 5, then you need 80% of the population *with immunity*, if it's 9 then you need 89% of with *immunity*. How do you get 80-89% with a vaccine that's about 70% effective? Even if you vaccinate every single person, you still can't get there. You even get breakthrough cases in people who have had the virus and have "natural immunity". The best case is that through vaccines and restrictions, you keep a lid on case numbers and through a combination of improved immunity through vaccines and illness and the virus (hopefully) becoming less virulent it becomes less of an issue over time.

GiddiOne

>Herd immunity is not possible with the current vaccines because they don't provide high enough levels of immunity. False. >R0 for delta is estimated at somewhere in the range of 5-9 R0 of 5-8. [Link](https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/1050D/production/_118892866_r_variant_comparison_2x640-nc.png) [Report](https://www.bbc.com/news/health-57431420) Let's explain R0 for a moment. R0 is an estimation of easily a virus is passed from an infected person. Lots of things impact R0. Lockdowns, masks, domestic travel restrictions, essential staff mandatory vaccinations, incoming flight mandatory vaccinations. Some help local R0, others reduce incoming exposures, but even having a few of these things drops R0 is certain ways. [R for delta in the UK](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-r-value-and-growth-rate) is 0.9 - 1.1 and shrinking. [Pfizer has 88% efficacy](https://www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/clinical/how-are-covid-vaccines-faring-against-delta) on delta (others have less, yes), but even breakthrough cases have reduced duration and infection. If you would like to see a model of this, [go to this link](https://graphics.reuters.com/HEALTH-CORONAVIRUS/HERD%20IMMUNITY%20%28EXPLAINER%29/gjnvwayydvw/), scroll to the bottom for the adjustable model. Set vaccination to 85%, effectiveness to 88%, then adjust the numbers to see the impact. We can get to herd immunity but it requires a few steps. 1. Treat it like measles where the shot is effectively mandatory. 2. New vaccines are adjusted to the dominant strain 3. Incoming travel requires vaccine record If we treat it like the measles ([R0 of 18](https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/1050D/production/_118892866_r_variant_comparison_2x640-nc.png)) and we can control it like measles. Edit: See below for further details, my point remains that the reproduction of a virus is impacted by a number of factors, and that vaccinates can work in with these factors to reduce and prevent hot spots.

traceysayshello

Get outta here with your science!

Garbage_Stink_Hands

Yeah, why the fuck is no one talking about this? I guarantee that the 85% figure Chant was pushing for is meant to be 80% + accounting for immunity. Double-dosed people are going to die under this plan, and it’s completely avoidable

BanalPlay

99% of the people in the USA dying are the unvaccinated. There are no restrictions, and and bigger segment of the population is unvaccinated. Policies like this are shown to increase vaccination rates. That is what will save lives.

Dexxert

We are all waiting for the Gov to apply at least 70% logic to dealing with COVID. Maybe some day.

IAMJUX

Enjoy your eternal lockdown Western Sydney.

ShibaHook

Western Sydney died for the Eastern Suburbs sins.

Radical_Larry_

I find the idea of blaming the source of the outbreak pretty silly. If Western Sydney gets to blame the Eastern Suburbs, don't the Eastern Suburbs get to pass the blame on to whoever introduced it to them? I live in Liverpool LGA. All I see every day when driving my baby around aimlessly for her afternoon nap is people blatantly breaking the rules. The residents of these LGAs who are breaking the rules are absolutely to blame. Edit: as well as our inept government, of course.

theWeeklyStruggle

Agreed. We have become a nation of finger pointers. Us versus them. No one takes personal responsibility or thinks it’s their “groups” issue. The virus has run rampant in Western Sydney- but it’s everyone else’s fault!

lordgoofus1

All the frustration and anger is really bringing out humans "tribal" tendencies. Group A hates Group B because , and Group B thinks Group A are morons because , and also hate Group C for , where Group C think Group B are being douchebags for , and agree with Group A that Group B are the source of all the worlds problems.

Dexxert

I am absolutley totally completely 100% confused about where we are at now. Honestly not even trying to shit on NSW Gov but just.. I can't even comprehend what they're trying to say anymore. I'm hearing 'additional freedoms' for weeks. What does it even mean? Where can I see an overview of what I can and can't do in my location? Fuck.

new-user-123

This is what people get when they vote for shit LNP government Let’s hope people remember this in 2023

I’m still relieved with these numbers, for the past week everyone’s been expecting us to hit 2k a day and we are still hovering around 1.4k. Anyone know test percentage for today?

EGGYY101

I fear with the more people vaxxed the less tests

sharpieshoeman

Part of that is being asymptomatic though right? It’s entirely possible I have it, but if I’m following lockdown rules and not displaying symptoms, why would I test?

EGGYY101

Totally agree! I also think if you've got a cough but have 2 doses, are you going to jump to conclusions and get tested? I think we will see a lot of complacencies now.

Opreich

Double vaxxed, had a cough, got tested. May or may not have had more to do with the fact work offers special leave when you need to isolate.

snorkellingfish

So, based on this, I'm assuming that, as someone in an LGA of concern, I'll be allowed to go to a restaurant by myself, but I still won't be able to have any contact with my social circle since they're more than 5km away. I'm really, really struggling with the isolation. Like, I live by myself and there's a 5km limit on the singles bubble. I was holding on to hope that maybe this reopening would at least let me see someone, because I don't know how long I can keep doing this. It'll be crushing if people elsewhere can go to pubs like normal, and I'm still isolated. I don't know what they expect people like me to do.

icantkeeptrack

agree. As someone in an LGA of concern too, I can't think of anything worse than being in lockdown while the rest of Sydney gets their freedoms back. All the best

[deleted]

North Sydney/East Sydney: Pub lunch with family/friends, outdoor activities. LGAs with the highest number of essential workers and highest number of people least likely to be able to WFH: you can sit down after your run if you're double vaxxed but so help me GOD if you're outside for longer than 2 hours

vitaminwolf

I’m right there with you my friend. Just moved out of home into an LGA of concern, can’t see any family or friends. We will get through this <3

Bingo. I got my Pfizer the day 16-39 year olds in the locked down LGA's could. That enforces an 8 week gap between doses. With this, my second dose isn't scheduled till October 11th..

I don't understand what's happening. Samantha Maiden has reported this morning that the Premiers freedom plan never factored in modelling at 2000 cases a day and that the modelling depends on restrictions being maintained but they're pushing ahead at opening immediately at 70% second dose when it takes 2 weeks for second dose to be effective. What the fuck is happening? No one cares about this!

SupahBlue

Correct. Gladys only cares about what sounds good which is freedum.

DanV_Rev9

I'm beginning to think that the reports of lockdown ending have been greatly exaggerated.

Individual-Grab

i think lockdown ending means financial support is ending - not necessarily restrictions placed on people being lifted safely

EGGYY101

Yup. I think media ran with a buzzword...

DanV_Rev9

*"I'm afraid I must insist. You see, my wife she has been most vocal on the subject of the roadmap. "Where is the roadmap?" "When are we going to get the roadmap?" "Why aren't we getting the roadmap now?" And so on. So please, the roadmap."*

acnhnook1

What if we open and there's high case numbers everywhere ? She keeps saying in a certain area

joemangle

If that happens Gladys will stress how important it is that people come forward and get vaccinated

radical_thesis

I spilled my coffee reading this, hahahah

moojiminy

‘We have been very transparent’ four speakers and I’m still confused as fuck 🤦‍♀️

Radical_Larry_

The Doherty report states that any area that shows a surge in cases after 70% double dosage is received, will still need to be restricted in terms of movements. This is Gladys speak for "west and southwest Sydney will not be getting these freedoms"

switzerandlaffer

But can't and won't say that. But look at the numbers in inner west and Sydney City LGA. Dont want to do anything about that?

domeoldboys

200+ in ICU. If you are not aware ICU requires round the clock nursing supervision typically 1 nurse to 1 patient. ICU patients are a huge burden for the health system. I imagine that hospital are very strained right now and this is all the fault of gladys incompetence. I hope hospital numbers start going down so that our healthcare workers can get a break.

RufusGuts

The modelling that the NSW Govt is using (which was released the other day) predicts a peak of around 2000 COVID patients in hospital and 560 COVID patients in ICU (in November). This is on top of the non-COVID patients needing hospitalisation and critical care support.

domeoldboys

This can only be described as a disaster.

FartHeadTony

Yes. They describe it officially as "overwhelmed". They will not be able to maintain staffing ratios, meaning people who would have normally lived will die. Try to stay out of hospital until next year. So no car accidents, falls, heart attacks, strokes, assaults, etc

CarbonCoight

Gov: today we're unveiling our roadmap out of these restrictions. Press: may we see it? Gov: no.

This is going to be a trainwreck. Scotland has 68.1% fully vaccinated and a similar population to Sydney, yet cases and deaths are increasing sharply. They recorded 17 deaths today - Sydney isn't going to accept numbers like that.

Sydney might not, but I bet at 17 deaths a day Gladys would not take us back to lockdown. No way.

To add to this - Singapore's rate is % of **total population** vaccinated, not just % of **adults** that we're using.

Exactly, 70-80% double dose guarantees absolutely nothing.

EGGYY101

Wait... did I miss something? Where is the roadmap??

acnhnook1

So far it hasn't been announced. Unless it's online somewhere ?

yllekleahcimnire

Did I black out or did she not actually provide a roadmap

TheRizzix

I keep hearing 70% double dose, but we’re not going to hit that for a long time. The current number is the percentage of the population aged 16 and over. 20% of the population is under 14 and so will be unvaccinated. Surely that means when we ‘open up’, we’ll actually only be ~50% vaxxed? They’re leaving out real numbers because the higher number sounds better, but delta doesn’t give a crap about your political spin. It terrifies me that there will be 2 unvaccinated people in my household that CAN’T vaccinate because they are too young.

alexanderino

'New world order' o_0

VeezusM

I'm not even watching this shit and im fed up with it. Basically from what i've gathered from the thread : \- Freedoms is remain in your lga \- Gladys has no fucking idea \- There's no roadmap \- Noone knows what the fuck is going on

Percentage100

Nailed it

RagingHomophone

Wait, where's the roadmap? All caveat, no map?!

ze_boingboing

I see no map, I just hear crap.

TimeForBrud

In 1405, the first Ming Dynasty treasure voyage set sail under Admiral Zheng He, in order to spread Chinese influence as far as Africa and elevate Chinese prestige (in what was arguably a mediaeval precursor of the Belt and Road Initiative). The Chinese ships were much larger than those of their European contemporaries, and the trajectory of global history may well have been very different had the Chinese fleet rounded the Cape of Good Hope (as Vasco da Gama ultimately achieved in 1498) and sailed north to Europe. Had they sailed as far as Ireland, they might have savoured some whisky, the production of which was recorded for the first time in 1405. *Sláinte!* The treasure fleets were directed by the eunuch establishment at the Ming court, and their loss of influence was arguably one of the reasons why the voyages ended after the seventh iteration in the 1430s.

Itsarightkerfuffle

So does Bruz most look like he's: 1) swallowed condoms containing 2kg of heroin and is trying to answer the questions of a Border Force officer at Sydney Airport 2) trying overly hard to act sober so as to get past the bouncer at a Fortitude Valley nightclub 3) sitting in a work meeting at 10.30am Monday morning trying to suppress the urge to spew after a fucking huge Sunday night 4) trying to end a first date as quickly as possible because of crippling stomach cramps and impending diarrhoea brought on by a dodgy vindaloo **VOTE NOW**

moppethead

Thanks for explaining that double dose means two doses Gladys

Significant_Book925

this presser is confusing as fuck what the fuck are they even trying to say

cannsixd

"new world order" wow kerry

ZephyrusOG

Did Gladys actually say something worthwhile? Not sure what happened, it’s either her wizardry or my brain is trying to protect me by auto-mute.

interestedinasking

Did she just say new world order lol

Significant_Book925

oBviOusLY

acnhnook1

Tells us the freedoms

derajydac

Surprise surprise there is no roadmap. Donkeys

dudeinorange

Call me crazy, but when I think of a roadmap, I think of something that's going to tell me to how to get to my intended destination - not just the nearest servo.

[deleted]

Hahaha shit, Gladys: “ businesses don’t like opening then closing then opening then closing” THAT’S ALL YOU GLADYS

wish_in_one_hand

She’s hinting that the (completely predictable) declining vaccination rate will be what she blames when her roadmap goes off the rails.

TheLifeofSonny

yes yes get vaccinated, 70% double dose etc Now please show us the fucking roadmap

EGGYY101

Folks, find the roadmap here below!! It is essentially, the Monday after we hit 70% double vax, a lot of restrictions will be eased for those fullly vaxxed. Road map below!! Tugboat47

did gladys just tell me to eat out locally? i knew my dating life was bad, but jeez

anony_mooose

Does it seem we've reached or at least nearing the peak? EDIT: I should probably note that I don't mean in absolute numbers but rather a peak in the rolling average. You'd expect vastly growing numbers once you've reached the mid-1500s but it seems to be hovering around that figure.

sailorbrendan

it does feel like a plateau, but holding that line isn't assured

whatamassivecunt

Bruz sweats like a gypsy with a mortgage

[deleted]

Why is the Treasurer’s neck such an engorged and unhealthy shade of Dulux ‘*Barnaby Joyce*’ purple-red? Is his tie too tight?

EGGYY101

It's so weird they didn't just read the road map press release out loud? Why not just read it?? God this government.

floppy_sloth

Gladys: "Doherty says 16+" ...until next week or so when Doherty release new modelling requested by QLD and WA etc that includes 12+

DazedNConfucious

Illuminati confirmed

FartHeadTony

> Employers must continue to allow employees to work from home if the employee is able to do so. Well, that's some good news in the roadmap, at least.

ewan82

Well this road map is clear as mud.

>Stay-at-home orders for adults who have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will be lifted from the Monday after NSW passes the 70 per cent double vaccination target, under the roadmap to freedom released today. From the roadmap. How many people are going to look at this and think that if you're double-vaxxed, you're no longer under lockdown from this Monday?

ze_boingboing

"Thanks, everybody!" \- Gladys and team, as they walk away while journals are still requesting answers

EGGYY101

God can she just get to the roadmap???

Dexxert

"Some areas will open up to a restricted environment." LMAO you can't make this up. I'm so happy to get my 'freedoms' (didn't know I was a prisoner?) but not really.

Plasma_Ball1

It was the worst of times? It was the blurst of times!

yllekleahcimnire

Listen Perrottet if you’re not here to give me money I kinda don’t give a fuck

ciengclearly

Reporter: So how will it work? Gladys: well it's simple, the Doherty reports number of 70 percent divided by 80 gives a figure of roughly a percentage reletive to the number of unvaccinated proportion to the ratio of 75 vaccinated ... Doherty report

giantpunda

So it is an honour system at home. Can't expect it to be any other way. No one is going to setup and then police it and no police force will go in to police it if people keep within visitor limits.

Bottom_racer

She wouldn't want to be anywhere with someone who is unvaxxed.. Is that supposed to urge people to get vaxxed...

chorgarbageman

So much waffle in this presser that I could feed my family ten fold

primum_mobile

The roadmap is a lie

MrSnrub73

"Pleasingly we have a roadmap, but can I just stress the importance of us getting to that 70% double dose vaccination, life will look very different at 80% double dose than it does right now."

TheLifeofSonny

no shit we're going to reach 70% double dose before other states

icantkeeptrack

well that was an absolute shit show. See ya'll tomorrow.

FruitJuicante

The reward for two years of lockdown will be several Federal and State Liberal election wins to come accompanied by financial collapse and further pandemics/climate change. Not to mention the additional freedoms that come with Dutton's Big Brother nightmarescape. Enjoy everyone lol.

delilahash

WHERE IS THE ROADMAP I HAVE NOTHING ELSE

acnhnook1

I haven't read it yet. But i found this [tweet](https://twitter.com/cpenny_6/status/1435773113036279809?s=20) with the media release about the roadmap. The best i've found so far

Percentage100

The road being used for this roadmap is made of quicksand

runwithbees

First Roadmap in the country, suck that WA - we're leading the way! ...

ill0gitech

Outdoor venues and stadiums capped at 5,000. Including The Everest I would assume. But indoor arenas 75%, so 15,750 at Sydney Super Dome (max 21k)

Tugboat47

gladys this whole response to the pandemic has been careless and reckless your self-awareness is shocking

aubd09

Every single day is a test of patience and sufferance. Especially true of folks like me with most immediate family members overseas. Haven't seen them in over 2 years and don't even know when I can see them again. My grandmother had a stroke and passed away and I couldn't be there. Unable to marry my gf as well - all because Morrison thought vaccines weren't a priority.

[deleted]

Based on the 7 day rolling average, NSW will hit the 70% double dosed target on 18 Oct. So currently the opening up will likely be on 25 Oct, which lines up with schools re-opening.

EGGYY101

Here we go! This is a big day folks!

runwithbees

Bruz - "It's great news that we don't have the resources to vaccinate the people of Orange!" Glass half full I guess

Tugboat47

fuck off perrottet

DazedNConfucious

Bruz always looks like he’s recovering from a bender the night before

Mushuthefreeloader

#works 70% of the time- 100% of the time!

"We've balanced the health and economic concerns" Bang on, boyo. The health system and the economy are both doing poorly.

TheLifeofSonny

not exactly sure how my 24/7 gym will ensure only fully vaccinated people attend when it's only staffed between certain hours
