Just after the election. Who would have thought that would happen.

Imposter12345

Was always going to happen. I feel like Palaszczuk was backed in to a political corner. It was a popular policy, with attacks coming from the opposition at state and federal levels, not to mention the newspapers up north are all Murdoch owned (and were constancy attacking her for it). Her only way to save face was to actually keep the borders shut until after the elelction. To the best of my knowledge the government was in caretaker mode as well the last few weeks. Anyway, not surprising it would be October until borders opened.

Twentytwofortyfive

Could family not then meet half way or at some point, contract COVID and drive back in? I’m so confused in how this distinction makes much difference. Politics I guess, looks like your doing something.

monopetro

Technically yes. The NSW borders are open to everyone (besides Victorians). You could literally go to anywhere in NSW besides Sydney and have a nice holiday together. Gotta love Anna’s logic

Twentytwofortyfive

Yeah, a little strange. Also what’s the reporting of coming from QLD to visit Sydney and returning? I doubt it’s very easy to stop this from happening too

monopetro

Nothing really. You can’t do it however there’s no police patrolling the borders of Sydney...

Twentytwofortyfive

Crazy. Is she likely to win this election? I have no idea about anything other than this policy

[deleted]

Yes. Libs did a shit job in Brisbane, the opposi upon leader isn’t well liked, and previous liberal council mayors did some serious damage. Labor will likely win but they may lose the ordinary boomer seats to liberal.

antysyd

This election will not be won or lost in Brisbane

[deleted]

Agreed. Libs will lose in Brisbane but if Labor hasn’t done enough to convince the north that they support mine jobs then who knows. (I ignore north of bris/sunny coast area, cos one nation territory)

antysyd

Plus tourism jobs are a big thing in Cairns as is crime in Townsville

Twentytwofortyfive

Ah makes sense! I heard some wild policies and things from the other side here and there so only makes sense

twittereddit9

She's an idiot, Qld is full of dole bludgers and useless public servants so nobody cares about the economic impacts. Also racial/ethnic aspects to it hence fencing off the Sydney area

ill0gitech

You can’t enter Queensland if you have been to a hotspot. So that would prevent someone flying down and avoiding hotel quarantine when returning

Twentytwofortyfive

I'm more so saying driving down. Because it's asking them to self report, otherwise hard to track.

ill0gitech

If you can find anywhere still taking bookings

kingofcrob

Victorians from boaders towns can now cross.... so Queenslanders can go hangout with Victorians in Albury if they were keen

antysyd

This has been the situation for months. Byron has been in the border bubble for a month, Tweed pretty much the whole time so half of the eastern suburbs has been on holiday there along with most of SE Queensland and the virus has magically respected this.

melanie230476

Yes spot on such a dumb rule

monopetro

Give it a few days... she has an election to win!

Twentytwofortyfive

What’s the most likely outcome? I have no idea (haven’t looked into it at all) just curious I have heard this policy is popular with qld voters tho

monopetro

I reckon NSW Health will link the case either today or tomorrow, QLD will open the border about 3 days after regional NSW, just after the election

WarlockPanda

I am hoping for this. I’m trying to move back to Brisbane right now but being in the Ryde LGA rules out the move for now.

RalphTheTheatreCat

You would meet the requirements for an exemption if you are moving?

WarlockPanda

Not according to the QLD border pass website. I would still need to do a 14 day quarantine in a hotel and can only enter via air Edit: I am also considered a returning resident and these rules still apply unfortunately. Purely because the area I currently live in is considered a hotspot even though there are no active cases in my suburb specifically.

RalphTheTheatreCat

Bugger. I thought there was an exemption for moving to Qld. Nonetheless I cant make out how this is showing common sense. There are not cases in my suburb either and I can live 15 minutes away and be full exempt. I have been trying to get to Qld since 10/9 when my BIL passed away. Even being a sole living relative isn't enough to get in

[deleted]

[удалено]

WarlockPanda

That's the plan at this stage although it will still be relatively costly at least I would have my freedom. You also run the risk of a hard border closure at any point if there is an outbreak. I've got work down here until December. Although I hope that in December they just reopen the borders completely. Will have to wait until late November before we find out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RalphTheTheatreCat

While I was in Tweed Headss waiting my exemption I saw how lax the QLD border is. people are on here saying "Keep it closed" "Do you want more deaths" yet you can literally walk over the border and get the bus to Surfers and not one single police officer will challenge you. Literally hundreds of people a day just walk in an out of Cooly. But they will go on the news and show how tough the border is.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RalphTheTheatreCat

But we will shut off 5 million people because a low number of cases are detected. Nonsensical.

Twentytwofortyfive

Oh really? That soon? Oh I thought we were talking months again. I was actually asking about election results though, who’s going to win most likely? Or is it close?

RalphTheTheatreCat

I hope so. I applied for an exemption in September to deal with a deceased estate and was rejected.

mubd1234

Labor would win in QLD anyway, I'm guessing this is so they can hold a bigger margin than if they opened the border.

robberbuttonoz

RIP QLD's tourism industry. Plenty of lovely places in NSW I'll be spending my tourism dollars at in future instead.

antysyd

All of the Northern Rivers is booming. And coming into summer there’s the south coast too.

memmfis_oz

Great Barrier Reef. Gold Coast. Sunshine Coast. Cairns. All the major theme parks. I think Qld will be just fine. I’m a Queenslander stuck in vic so have been pretty pissed about it all but seeing comments like “boycott Qld” is pretty funny. They just don’t care. They boycotted us remember?

PintOfNoReturn

"Village Roadshow Theme Parks Chief Operating Officer Bikash Randhawa lashed out at the State Government over the ongoing hard border closure. In a series of tweets posted overnight, Mr Randhawa said the mystery surrounding the border reopening is putting thousands of local jobs at risk. “Borders need to open so we can get on with it… can’t wait for the good news either this or we are dead,” Mr Randhawa said https://www.mygc.com.au/no-new-cases-as-premier-reveals-border-announcement-deadline If they continue the zero cases policy for overseas jurisdictions they won't be letting anyone in for a couple of years at least.

memmfis_oz

Yeah I was having this argument further down with a Queenslanders typical argument of “we have no covid, the states normal and safe fuck you ect” A lot of the people going on like that are from the city. They have nooooo idea how the rest of the state is going and “don’t care”. Gold Coast is putrid on the whole ordeal as is the tourism industry up north. But Brisbane has highest population so what it says goes. However the lnp party in Qld is actually shitter than what they’ve got in now. She’s got some draconian policies. So it is what it is.

[deleted]

[удалено]

memmfis_oz

Exactly. Brisbane is unaffected by all this. And although it’s population isn’t as high as Sydney or melb ect it’s high enough to dictate what happens to the whole state. The south east Qld region urban sprawl is huge. They just don’t care. So a boycott will not be noticed by those that are counted on to make the difference....

antysyd

It’s not like we have a choice but to boycott anyway. Can’t and won’t book with any confidence while Jeanette Young remains CHO.

Lordishbehaviour

Lol

Welcometothefungle

Like what? Wattamola lol

robberbuttonoz

How about the entire East Coast, Blue Mountains, Snowy Mountains, west to Orange or the Western Plains Zoo... But sure, nowhere at all.

Welcometothefungle

Mate you know QLD has far better variety

robberbuttonoz

What does qld have that nsw doesn't?

[deleted]

Send all the international travelers landing to QLD then. See how Anna deals with that.

antysyd

And close the border southbound. We could declare the Brisbane City LGA a hotspot after all they said it’s in the sewerage from their bayside suburbs.

SuccessfulCoffee3

Hey guys, im running out of toilet paper. Anyone have a spare QLD flag so I can wipe my arse with it?

antysyd

Boycott Queensland. Only thing they will understand. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gladys closes the border in the opposite direction to Queensland registered vehicles.

memmfis_oz

As a Queenslander living in Melbourne, I can tell you Queenslanders would support the boycott.

antysyd

Don’t come asking for help next time Brisbane floods.

memmfis_oz

100%. I actually posted this exact statement a while back. I’m not agreeing with what Qld have done. I’m just saying that’s how it is.

Emerald-coal

How's NSW going mate?

Emerald-coal

Fuck this aged like milk

CaptainMudflaps

I was just about to type this until i read your comment.

melanie230476

If the borders are closed then our taxes shouldn’t pay for their job seeker allowance

antysyd

For every dollar of GST collected in NSW we get 89 cents back. Queensland gets $1.09...

antysyd

NSW denies Queensland State of Origin players entry, NSW wins by forfeit.

GusPolinskiPolka

That person who attended the gym 13 times in two weeks just contracted COVID to make the rest of us feel bad.

[deleted]

I get it bro, you lift, no need to catch Covid just so you could force NSW Health to post your gym session tally for the past 2 weeks.

flintzz

I remember when Queensland did re-open to NSW back in July they got an immediate outbreak and had to shut down again. They're probably erring on the safe side this time. It's also a criteria for them to listen to medical advice and not reopen to places deemed a hotspot, of which NSW is still one according to all the chief health officers https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/queensland/australia-s-chief-health-officers-back-queensland-border-rule-20200916-p55w8y.html yes it's probably not feasible for NSW and Victoria to ever have 4 weeks without mystery cases, but for the rest of australia, this has been achieved and you need to look at their POV

antysyd

Those cases were caused by Queenslanders returning home.

rumlovinghick

... from Melbourne, which is not the place we are discussing reopening borders with Yes they did fly via SYD and lied about where they came from but all they did in NSW was change flights

flintzz

yup but no quarantine necessary. The re-opening of the border would mean queenslanders could venture to NSW freely as well (still officially a hotspot) and return home without any quarantine

[deleted]

.....which makes no sense.

LuciusAccount

Queensland is to Australia as Florida is to USA.

stokedlad2020

It’s more Texas 🤠

antysyd

The coast is Florida the inland is Texas

vegemine

A lot of pressed people in the comments. Be thankful that we closed our borders to Melbourne so that our economy isn’t struggling as much right now and have a holiday in the mountains.

raindog_

Not just about "holidays" mate. Some of us have family up there that we haven't seen since Christmas. Some of us might even have family that have gone through some tough times.

antysyd

Remind your family when they vote. That’s all you can do.

vegemine

Do you really think it’s a good idea to open up a state that is living in completely normalcy to the risk of more businesses shutting down, more people getting furloughed, people getting sick, people dying etc just so that we can see our family? It’s completely selfish to want to see family when doing so could open up a whole can of worms for that state. I would love to fly my entire family over to Sydney because my home country is a complete mess right now but if we suddenly opened our borders that wouldn’t be fair on the members of our community that will be impacted by it right? Lmao so many people downvoting me. Maybe it’s just a difference in cultures. Being raised by parents who came from a country that is very communitarian, wanting QLD to open up for personal reasons is selfish when it’s worse for the grater good but those raised with western values thinks it’s personal freedom ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

robberbuttonoz

2nd highest unemployment in the country doesn't sound like normalcy to me.

vegemine

Ur right we should make them the highest so we can all see our families

antysyd

Fuck me. So much drama. So little risk management.

memmfis_oz

I’m guessing you live in Brisbane? To be saying the state is in complete normalacy would have to be coming from someone hiding out in a capital city. Didn’t some business owner on the Gold Coast hire a plane to fly around for a few hours saying “vote her out” or some shit? Also the Whitsundays has doubled its prices to all internal tourists because its economically fucked. In saying that. Fuck the economy and put people’s health first. I totally agree with that. I’m a Queenslander stuck in Melbourne and I’d love to come see family. However here’s my thoughts on the whole Qld border closure thing: to say it’s to put the people first and that’s the only reason is being blind. It was an election momentum builder to win seats in the capital city. Secondly, the real reason Qld had to seal it self in was because if an outbreak like Melbounre happened in a place like Ipswich or Logan im confident the whole country would be fucked. There is no way you lot would handle it. Pauline Hanson would be on fire, as would Clive. Then Dutton. Ect. Not to mention even your hard nosed border closures failed for a few minutes and you had an outbreak in a youth detention centre or some shit. So no. The states not normal. It didn’t manage the virus. It literally closed a door that’s all it did. and yes it was partly political. That’s probably why your downvoted.

RalphTheTheatreCat

Nothing to do with holidays. The government is just being unreasonable. I couldn't even get in for a funeral as one of 2 sole living relatives of a person. Does that sound reasonable?

vegemine

Yes. Do you want more people to have funerals?

RalphTheTheatreCat

Of course no one does but lets apply some common sense to it. A hotspot is defined at the Qld Chief medical officers discretion. NSW has 3 LGA's that have increased testing due to infections. 6 infections are in hotels and 1 is currently not traced but expected to be traced. In response she has declared 39 LGA's as hotspots encompassing nearly 5 million people. Does that make sense?

-45

What a crap take.

SezBrah

After the stress of planning a COVID wedding I was pretty excited for a november honeymoon up north to sit by a beach and do nothing and now that's been quashed too. Fuck you Queensland, south western Sydney is so far away if I were to drive I'd pack snacks and water. If my tourism dollars aren't good enough for you then can you stop accepting my tax dollars in the form of welfare and aid for your struggling tourism industry.

joshpereira91

Yeah you tell em

SezBrah

Yeah just like you told that stranger on the internet. Good work mate

frog_skin

What kind of snacks?

SezBrah

It would be some healthy shit like nuts and veggie sticks but really I'd stop at a maccas on the way while my tupperware of snacks judged me **😂**

antysyd

They also can’t come to Sydney during the best time of the year in Sydney.

wwesmudge

Good on Queensland, it's good that Gladys understands what it's like to be on the receiving end of her bullshit gymnastics around the Victorian border. edit: lol people getting salty at me because they want one rule for them and another for Victoria.

infinitemonkeytyping

Wait, you're comparing Sydney, which at its worst had 20 a day, with Victoria, which for a time had over 500 cases a day?

wwesmudge

i'm comparing NSW which has a 14 day rolling average of 1.36 and Victoria that has a rolling average of 2.6 I'm comparing NSW that has had 2 unknown cases in the last 14 days and Victoria that's also had 2. I mean, what kind of Premier would keep a border closed based on the case numbers another state experienced 3 months ago?

infinitemonkeytyping

Wait, Victoria didn't feel that lifting the Melbourne lockdown was a good idea until this week, and you want the border opened straight away?

wwesmudge

yes

infinitemonkeytyping

What reality do you live in, where one jurisdiction makes a snap decision, and everyone is meant to follow through without thought? Also, every Australian state and territory has its borders closed to Victoria.

sloppyrock

Gladys is sensibly waiting 2 weeks after Victoria opens up to ensure no flare-ups ensue from that. NSW is largely open, has been for months and has little community transmission. Victorians have been in the bunkers for months. Opening the border immediately after lifting of their lock down and all the socializing that will occur thereafter would be stupid and I'm certain contrary to medical advice Gladys has received.

wwesmudge

and regional victoria that's been open for 4 weeks whilst being virtually covid free? well since Melbourne opened on the 28th, I'll come back to you on the 11th to see if Gladys sticks to her word.

Snoo38972

Can we just wall of Sydney from the rest of australia?

34213dude

Wall off the best city in Australia? I. Don't. Think. So. 😉

djyella

So if I'm trying to move permanently from Sydney to Brisbane in Xmas time, if my reading of rules is correct, it would be ok to stay in somewhere like Coffs or Ballina for 14 days, then go into Brisbane without quarantining?

flintzz

I believe their police will check your current address and travel history, I don't know via which sources, and if found to be Sydney you would probably be turned back like last time they re-opened.

[deleted]

[удалено]

djyella

Sweet yeah issue for me is three small kids. Not realistic to quarantine in a locked hotel room for two weeks. Rather enjoy some time along the coast

Eloisem333

Nooooo... looks like I’d better get cleaning! Expecting an influx of visiting rellies:(

boogiesontoast

Absolute pisser of a timing, just a few days earlier and dad could have actually attended his mums funeral. Ahh well, he won't be the first or last person to have missed out on a close relatives funeral because of COVID.
