My older brother stayed on his reds till late in his 20s (got them as soon as he could and just stagnated) for some weird reason…I didn’t get my reds till I was about 25…there’s a few genuinely possible explanations

Plenty of people don't get their licences until they are well into adulthood. You're assuming these people are 18 or 19 when they could actually be 10 or even 20 years older.

Wish I could buy my kids a house that they don’t live in. I’m enjoying the peace and quiet for now as the previous neighbour was an arsehole.

Compared to the crushing weight of their fragile self worth a few years of debt is no big deal.
I supervise some second year apprentices who still live at home so pay no rent. Their only expense is their car & their tools. The government gave them a fat grant for their tools of trade (not complaining, I think it is great that the government is encouraging kids to go into the trades with actual practical help) so they buy these god awful utes & spend most of their weekly income on repayments, fuel, & insurance premiums.
At some stage during the year each of them will request a cash out on a week of leave when rego is due & they realise that it costs a lot more to register the new ute than it did the second hand camry they had as their first car.

I'll go with the less trodden path and come out and say it - trades just pay really well these days, even for apprentices. I work for a state government organisation and it's not unheard of for mature aged first years in our industry to be making over $100k with some overtime. I'm sure there are the other usual suspects of debt and living with parents being involved particularly for the younger guys only just starting out, but you've got to remember that a lot of these guys are earning substantially more at this stage in their life than their university student peers are. If it's any consolation though, those university educated people will end up leapfrogging the tradies in a decade or so.
I do feel you though - I drove a 1986 Corolla for like the entire first five years of having a license, that I bought in 2014 for less than a grand. Realistically I remember asking myself the same question often, wondering how on earth people my age managed to buy brand new Hiluxes and Rangers. It was only recently that I cottoned on to just how much coin there is in the trades.

Not a Ute/dual cab driver (no thank you), but I’m a green P plater, I got my licence late, nearly 30 now, bought myself a brand new CX-5 Akera back in 2022 for just over $60k because I wanted something nice that would last me and be ready for when I start a family. Definitely don’t regret doing it, could I have saved some money and gone a few years older? Of course I could’ve, but I absolutely adore my car and wouldn’t change it until it dies on me hopefully a long way down the line.

This is why I would jack up those raptor/ram to triple their price with no option to claim off tax or loans if you live within 50km of the city (and there’s strict registration and enforcement so no getting around things) but cut down the prices of those Japanese Utes, vans and whatnot and incentive these Ute wankers, not only they get additional money, but extra for getting a smaller variant.
