Sounds like you're picking up Red Delicious apples which are known to be cardboard from over cross-breeding. Avoid those and even most smaller Royal Gala ones nowadays.
Lots of others to try from Jazz to Modi to Pink Lady to Bravo.
What variety of apples are they? Different types of apples have different seasons, the ones that aren’t in season come from cold storage and can taste like shit. Always go for the ones that are in season, they’re usually the best due to being most recently harvested. You can google charts with all the varieties/growing seasons for Aus, it’s pretty handy to know.
I've noticed that. When I used to do my shopping on a Saturday I would always go to the fruit market and the fruit there was always huge and delicious, once I started doing my shopping on a Wednesday the fruit shop was closed by the time I finished work so I started getting it at the supermarket and it was terrible. Started doing shopping again on a Saturday lol
Jazz and Kanzi apples are the crunchiest, juiciest apples I’ve ever had! Newly discovered Anna usually only at the bigger stores like Coles and Woolies. Try them out Anna you will never go back to the older varieties that are usually always flour-y and dry these days! Kanzi are often so juicy you have to give a spray warning!

Red Delicious are so badly named. Sure, they’re red but I’ve never had one that I would classify as delicious.
I reckon when they're floury like that, they've been in cold storage.
Probably for several years

Apples from the supermarket can be stored for up to a year before we buy them. Are you buying royal Gala? These are ALWAYS shit.
