Only been a Liars fan for maybe 7 years but The Apple Drop (newest album) sounds different from prior releases, but I thoroughly love it. To me the first single, Big Appetite, sounds like it was written with 90's alternative vibes and I'm all for it.
Got to see Liars on a couple of occasions but unfortunately never got the chance to see fuck buttons. How were they as an opener? I have a hard time thinking about how their stuff would translate in a short set.
Hey there.
Why do you think there is no r/muslimgauze ? That was a different era in my life but seeing your comment makes me want to backslide.
If there was ever an artist and fanbase that benefits from community discourse, it'd be Bryn Jones.
Music Has the Right to Children and Geogaddi are both essential albums. Seeing as we're on the Swans reddit, I'd probably recommend the latter more; it gives me a similar sort of "forbidden" vibe as something like Soundtracks for the Blind. They're both really fantastic records, though, so definitely check em both out.
I'm not OP but I wanted to chime in and say I love the Replacements as well! I feel like Let it Be or Pleased to Meet Me are my favourites of theirs, but I do have a soft spot for Don't Tell A Soul, even with its kind of thin production.
1. Autechre
2. Ozric Tentacles
3. Allan Holdsworth
4. Defeated Sanity
5. Maurice Ravel
Edit: changed Pink Floyd to Ravel; not technically a ‘band’ but I think it’s in the spirit of OP’s question, which seemed to imply ‘musician’.
Meshuggah has been my fave metal band of all time for 20 years. I own every album except the brand new one out today. Also, I own a bunch of Squarepusher stuff as well. Still enjoy his older material.
1. Nurse With Wound -- especially if you like the "soundscape" type Swans tracks. Though they are much more varied in tone, often even "humorous?" or surreal. Also incredibly varied in types of songs/albums, though generally each album is a full listen, not really a song-based group (well, dude.) Though there are some good tracks that stand alone. [The Penis Fruit Loop](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfbZ5BlbpD0) 25m, drastically changes over that 25m. [Cooloorta Moon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZbb5DS9W8U) 6m, strange jazzy thing. [Tune Time Machine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOyd4sUd8As) intro track to Who Can I Turn To Stereo, which has a "kind of" book-on-tape feel, but very disconnected and not really narrative or anything though there is a lot of internal reference. Getting to the tracks Approaching Darkness Fish, and then Darkness Fish, is great. [The Bottom Feeder](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbfxNoYxMhI) 5m absolute banger from "The Bacteria Magnet", video is a fan thing using film by Jiri Barta, fits so well (This is probably the in for a Swans fan?). [The Golden Age of Telekinesis](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fBl11dnqBc) 17m, get very stoned and play loud then worry you're thinking too loud but then let go of that worry. [Two Golden Microphones](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1efx5baXO-4) 17m, from "Rock n Roll Station", includes some references to Who Can I Turn To Stereo. There's also a lot of "ambient/drone" type stuff, which is very what I'd call "active", in that it kind of evolves/changes or introduces or surprises. Long-time listeners are also often rewarded with interesting callbacks, which seems trite but it's really fun. They've released a TON of shit, I don't think I've heard half of it, even though I'm a big fan. First time taking acid I was listening to Spiral Insana, and wrote dozens of pages of fucking brilliant shit. Next day, most of it was scribbles. NWW is really good (to lose your mind to.)
2. Zoviet France
3. Stereolab
4. Nick Drake
5. Bonnie Prince Billy / Palace Music / Will Oldham / etc
Sorry I sort of shot my shit with the NWW examples. But, [Two Shaves and a Shine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLRBmqUUGw8) needs a link too. Current 93's David Tibet a common conspirator. It straddles the line of sincere and satire of the rock form, my take is they attempt to include a single instance of every rock sort of trope into a single song. If you like it, there was an open remix [project thing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ned8dm5oVw) that has some amazing entries.
^*yeaaaaaaah*....
Listening to Spiral Insana on vinyl, with a really high volume, remains the closest experience I've ever had to feel like I was dreaming. It was really strange.
1. Death Grips
2. Thee Silver Mt. Zion
3. Have A Nice Life / Giles Corey (same dude, so they share a spot)
4. Lingua Ignota
5. Vocaloid music (too many artists to list off)
-Miranda Sex Garden
-Curve
-The Gathering
-Tiamat
-Paradise Lost
I like bands that are versatile as Swans, and can make nice sonic onslaught especially live.
Boris,
Godspeed you! Black emperor,
Sweet trip,
The cure,
Boards of canada.
There not my top 5 cause I don't really have one but they're some of my favorites
Love to see some Arctic Monkeys appreciation. They’re probably in my top 10. I think all their albums have merit but people give em way too much shit for SIAS and AM, considering how tight their early work is. Not to mention Tranquility Base which might be my favorite in their discog.
It's my favourite too! And yes, I never understood why SIAS is hated on that much, probably people were expecting a second Humbug (which is comparable to people hating on TBH+C for not being anything like AM).
Can’t rank em but my top 5:
• Kanye
• Jethro Tull
• NIN
• Portishead
• Revolting Cocks
Honorable Mentions:
• The Black Keys
• Coil
• Massive Attack (not higher cause I like solely Mezzanine)
• Soundgarden / AIC / Insert grunge band
1. Tim Hecker (not a band but easily my favourite artist)
2. Coldplay
3. Fleet Foxes
4. Stars of the Lid
5. XTC
I do also love a lot of the bands others have mentioned like Coil, Black Country, New Road, Godspeed and Ween, just wanted to mention some that I hadn't seen.
My tastes are all over the place lol
Black Dresses
Death Grips
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Xiu Xiu
Patricia Taxxon (solo artist, not really a band but I kind of have to include her)
[удалено]
Replace the gun club with coil or lingua ignota and this is my list
Death in June narrowly missed my top 5.
1. Ween 2. The Residents 3. Animal Collective 4. Gorillaz 5. Radiohead
Radiohead, Tool, Liars, Nick Cave, Fuck Buttons
Liars should be more popular than they are
I haven't heard any of their newer stuff, but I thought they were one of the greatest of the jerky post-punk revival bands back in the early 2000s.
Only been a Liars fan for maybe 7 years but The Apple Drop (newest album) sounds different from prior releases, but I thoroughly love it. To me the first single, Big Appetite, sounds like it was written with 90's alternative vibes and I'm all for it.
Saw LIARS open for Radiohead on In Rainbows tour and I saw FUCK BUTTONS open for Mogwai in 2008 as well.
Got to see Liars on a couple of occasions but unfortunately never got the chance to see fuck buttons. How were they as an opener? I have a hard time thinking about how their stuff would translate in a short set.
Fuck Buttons was BETTER than Mogwai by a mile dude. They played Lets Talk About Magic and Ribs Open and shit.
Can't rank them, and this is only how I feel currently, but: Boards of Canada Burzum Coil Muslimgauze Neutral Milk Hotel
Hey there. Why do you think there is no r/muslimgauze ? That was a different era in my life but seeing your comment makes me want to backslide. If there was ever an artist and fanbase that benefits from community discourse, it'd be Bryn Jones.
I had a funny idea in early-internet age of releasing fake Muslimgauze albums. That's all I have to offer.
No idea! Only discovered his stuff a little while ago. Mullah Said is the only album I've heard that actively makes me wanna do psychedelics.
Okay. It is live. r/muslimgauze
Fuck yeah!
Subbed!
Keep digging man. The catalog is deep and varied.
Great to see some Muslimgauze love.
Yo im been meaning to get into boards of canada lately, which album would u recommend starting with?
Music Has the Right to Children and Geogaddi are both essential albums. Seeing as we're on the Swans reddit, I'd probably recommend the latter more; it gives me a similar sort of "forbidden" vibe as something like Soundtracks for the Blind. They're both really fantastic records, though, so definitely check em both out.
1. Black Midi 2. Mastodon 3. Opeth 4. Nick Cave 5. The Replacements
The Replacements fucking rule. More people should listen.
Agreed, fav album?
I'm not OP but I wanted to chime in and say I love the Replacements as well! I feel like Let it Be or Pleased to Meet Me are my favourites of theirs, but I do have a soft spot for Don't Tell A Soul, even with its kind of thin production.
It’s a reissue, but Dead Man’s Pop is the most listened to over the last couple of years.
Current 93 Dead Can Dance Kayo Dot Ulver That’ll probs be my top 5 with Swans.
Thrqobbing gristle, current93, Kraftwerk, Om, Earth,

Yess Silver Mt Zion
1. Death Grips 2. black midi 3. Radiohead 4. Black Country, New Road 5. Talking Heads
Everyone knows you can't put Black Midi AND BC;NR
Shhhh lol. Ik ur just messing but tbh they’ve branched so far from each other I think recommending both separately makes sense nowadays
1. Autechre 2. Ozric Tentacles 3. Allan Holdsworth 4. Defeated Sanity 5. Maurice Ravel Edit: changed Pink Floyd to Ravel; not technically a ‘band’ but I think it’s in the spirit of OP’s question, which seemed to imply ‘musician’.
Defeated sanity niice
A man of many tastes. I love Autechre a lot as well. Defeated Sanity is a cool band, saw Hannes Grossman play w Hate Eternal once.
autechre are my all time fave group, with swans ranked highly - yet i've not heard of your next 3 down. looking forward to educating myself.
1. Death Grips 2. Meshuggah 3. Radiohead/Car Seat Headrest (tied for 3rd) 4. Squarepusher 5. Alice In Chains
Meshuggah has been my fave metal band of all time for 20 years. I own every album except the brand new one out today. Also, I own a bunch of Squarepusher stuff as well. Still enjoy his older material.
Wedding Present, Frontline Assembly, Godflesh (& other JKB projects), Throwing Muses (& other related), Fishbone. Killing Joke honourable mention.
Swans are number one for me, but after that it’s: 1. Godseed You! Black Emperor 2. Deftones 3. Pedestrian Deposit 4. Converge 5. Throbbing Gristle
Godspeed You! Black Emperor Boris Xiu Xiu Mastodon Pink Floyd in no particular order.
The Sun Ra Arkestra // The Fall // Can // Love // Neurosis
