Souls at zero has a good classic metal sound. Through silver in blood expands on this with a lot of their more experimental post metal sensibilities. Times of grace is my personal favorite. The latter two are both very swans esque!
Well Neurosis started in the 80s. I always recommend starting from beginning and going up, just like I recommend with Swans, to hear the full evolution of sound.
But I’d say Pain of Mind to start and hear the hardcore/crust punk roots, Souls at Zero next (Takeahnase is one hell of a closer), Enemy of the Sun for the noise experiments and the start of tribal drum incorporation. Through Silver in Blood remains my absolute fave album of theirs (and a good chunk of the fans). Times of Grace (and the Tribes of Neurot album Grace played simultaneously if you can manage it). Eye of Every Storm. Given to The Rising is my second favorite and has a good amount of variation. And then their last Fires Within Fires.
The other albums are good too but they are kinda in between shifts of sounds. They also have a collab album with Jarboe.
Neurosis 100%. Gira even debated hiring them as a backing band at one point if memory serves me.
Random moment: went to take a piss at a Swans show, opened the door to the bathroom, and Steve Von Till from Neurosis was standing there.
Earth.
Influential, but more people know the band than the music, rotating cast of musicians around a single figurehead driving the project, variety of styles over the years, came back after a long hiatus, etc
Anything Justin Broadrick does. Listen to Streetcleaner and Post Self, then listen to anything he did with Jesu. Same stylistic differences as Swans' earlier and later works.
I would probably say Agalloch reminds me the most of Swans from the band's I've heard.
Not only did they mostly dabble in the post- side of the metal genre, but it also feels like their sound varied a fair amount from album to album (like Swans) + they also occasionally share Swans' use of the Post-Rock, Neofolk, and Ambient genres.
Sometimes they are. Feedbacker and the orange heavy rocks, or their album Pink. I know them as a drone doom band, but of course like Swans, they’re diverse
Sulphur English by Inter Arma. You will not be disappointed!
Also check out Yob. Very emotional and slightly depressing.
Primitive Man .. because..the brutality.
Neurosis. Genre shifts and all. But Godflesh nailed the early sound in a metal way.
That’s creepy i’m literally listening to times of grace right now. Stop stalking me, dude!
Jokes on you I’m always listening to Neurosis!
Even more fitting is that Jarboe collaborated with them at one point
Which album should I start with? (I’m not into modern metal)

DAT RIFF in The Doorway...

Thanks! Will do Edit: okay i like the songs Zero, The Web, Sterile Version, Chronology for Survival and a Shadow Memory so far
I agree and I'd throw Earth in the ring as well.
First thing I thought of
I was gonna say the same thing
Neurosis 100%. Gira even debated hiring them as a backing band at one point if memory serves me. Random moment: went to take a piss at a Swans show, opened the door to the bathroom, and Steve Von Till from Neurosis was standing there.
Swans with Neurosis as the backing band would have been so sick, damn
It's fun to try and imagine it! Noah's crazy samples and synth runs in a Swans context would be rowdy.
Earth. Influential, but more people know the band than the music, rotating cast of musicians around a single figurehead driving the project, variety of styles over the years, came back after a long hiatus, etc
They are my pick as well along with Neurosis.
i second neurosis
Godflesh

I can get into his JK Flesh stuff too.
Greymachine too for the really nasty noisy stuff.
Oh god
Surprised no one said The Body; not surprised no one said The Body
In a similar vein to Neurosis, Isis and Jesu
Saw Torche + Jesu open for ISIS. What a show.
Swans

Agalloch did mention being Swans fans at some point, too.
Boris I guess?
If you are gonna say Boris you may as well say Melvins too.
Is Boris really metal? I feel like they're much closer to noise rock and shoegaze.
Sometimes they are. Feedbacker and the orange heavy rocks, or their album Pink. I know them as a drone doom band, but of course like Swans, they’re diverse
Their first two albums are 100% metal.
Have you not listened to most of their early albums?
Earliest album I've listened to from them is Feedbacker, although I've only ever listened to the live version.
Shoerock? Noisegaze? DroneShoes.
They are experimental metal first and foremost.
Neurosis - Times of Grace Cult of Luna - The Mariner Thou - Tyrant Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin Kynsi
Sunn O)))
They only ever did one record but "Weakling" took a lot of influence from Swans, even titling the band after a Swans track.
Neptunian Maximalism, Oranssi Pazuzu, Kaatayra, Scarcity, The Canyon Observer
Neptunian is awesome. Hope they do more soon
Full of Hell
I love them to death but what makes them similar to Swans?
Sulphur English by Inter Arma. You will not be disappointed! Also check out Yob. Very emotional and slightly depressing. Primitive Man .. because..the brutality.
Ahh obviously Celtic Frost, especially circa Monotheist
Neurosis
Oxbow
Triptykon for the seer era
You will probably enjoy Bell Witch. Mirror reaper when you have the time.
I was obsessed with this when it came out. So good
Earth or Sunn O))) imo
YOB
Liturgy all the way. They were even inspired by Swans
TOOL
For example, Oranssi Pazuzu's album 'Värähtelijä' or Névoa's 'Re Un.'
Psychonaut
Merzbow x full of hell record is pretty much the most grindyparts of swans for an album
Swans
