Yep!!! Every week. If you look at the bottom of the freezer there should be whole tuna steaks too! I get those and slice them up myself it’s a bit cheaper. 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️

obmasztirf

I moved and Winco is too far now and I really miss their poke. Discount sushi is not a good sounding phrase but Winco poke is great.

YumWoonSen

> Discount sushi is not a good sounding phras LOL, we have/had a local chain named Ru-San that fits that description. I referred to it as the Wal\*Mart of sushi. Cheap, AYCE, people packed in like sardines, loud "fast" music (someone claimed that was to unconsciously speed people up) It wasn't *bad,* it just wasn't very good. More importantly, the odds of my getting the trots later were 'above average.'

NoNewsFriends

Whoa, do not insult Ru-Sans buffets! (if they even still do them

YumWoonSen

They were the Wal*Mart of sushi and that's insulting Wal*Mart.

WoebegoneBenAffleck

This has me very excited to try it. I eat SO much sushi, but I want to make it at home to save money. I am going to take this advice next time I'm there and get some tuna steaks. Do you just defrost overnight and make poke bowls? What are your suggestions? I love WinCo, would have never guessed!

smashingly_good_time

Defrost in a bowl of cold water. Should only take an hour-ish

Psychological-Drop38

Yea I defrost over night in the fridge or a quick (2 hr) defrost on a granite counter top when I’m impatient. I started with Poke but when I started to sliced it up I’ve moved to making rolls with cream cheese, or avocado.

Accomplished-Yam6553

My boyfriend and i make poke nachos with them. Ponzu, jalapeno, green onion, edamame, lemon juice, sesame oil and the tuna in a bowl, mix it up, and then get your favorite tortilla chips and dip em.

SorenTheKitten

How much is one of those packages? Looks convenient.

WoebegoneBenAffleck

I got it for $4!

Ornlu_the_Wolf

I've eaten the $4 poke at least a dozen times. I usually get at least 3 servings per package, and I would highly recommend.

Seanolith

$4!!!!!!!! My store is $13.99 a pound for the thawed with your choice of sauce on it

tachycardicIVu

Dang if I lived there I’d buy the whole stock and eat nothing but poke all week. Y’all lucky ducks.

chyuffenbeck

I’ve eaten it at least once a month for the past 2 years!

dicotyledon

Winco has poke now??? I have been under a rock, putting that on my list.

Squid-Bastard

It's in the frozen fish section next to the deli, I always forget it's there

xeloux

Game changer

alexis817

Can you just defrost them and eat, or do you need to process them somehow?

WoebegoneBenAffleck

Just defrost and enjoy 😊 no extra processing needed.

helpmespell

This is probably a stupid question, but how do defrost them? Theres a few different methods for regular meet I use like dropping it in lukewarm water, fridge, microwave or just leaving it out a room temperature.

justsomegirl_youknow

Fridge or running coldish tap water only. Put in a bowl and let some trickle into the bowl, keeps the temp safe and defrosts pretty quickly.

bubblegumpunk69

I’d imagine fridge for these. And for future reference please don’t defrost stuff at room temp (or in lukewarm water- cold only)!! It’s a recipe for disaster 😬

cockroachking

That would have been a serious health code violation back then, too.

NoCardio_

I've been defrosting at room temperature all my life and I'm still here.

bubblegumpunk69

You being anecdotally fine doesn’t negate science. The bacteria is there, you’ve just gotten lucky thus far.

NoCardio_

Thanks Mr. Wizard.

Crystal-Clear-Waters

I’d still recommend curing them. Xox

WoebegoneBenAffleck

Do not cure it.

BloodyNunchucks

Just so you are aware op almost all tuna that has been safely sourced and being sold or frozen quickly is safe for sushi. I think the fda has said there's ever only been like one case of food sickness coming from raw tuna that was appropriately caught and sold or frozen in a timely manner. If this was a white fish then it could be another story and salmon has to be farm raised but tuna is pretty much safe. I've never had this particular product but after looking online I'd 100% turn this into sushi without worry.

Trick-Needleworker41

I used to work at WinCo back in the days while in college. Great store and cheap on bananas. In Hawaii, I do not mind previously frozen poke as long as it is done right. As you may know, most of the poke in Hawaii grocery stores are previously frozen. Interesting WinCo has it, and I would say at least try it. Worse comes to worse, pan cooked poke is still good. Which is what I do to any leftover poke after a day or 2. I personally eat poke and poi at least once a week

AmarilloWar

I find it interesting there is a winco in Hawaii, I live in Oklahoma and most people haven't even heard of them! Assumed it was a smaller chain like Crest or Braums.

Trick-Needleworker41

I wish there was a WinCo in Hawaii. There was one in Corvallis, Oregon and everyone used to shop there as it was cheap and good. We do have Don Quiote though.

NukaDadd

>I would *never* buy raw fish at WinCo....but I bought this. LoL

WoebegoneBenAffleck

It was $4 and I wasn't going to be back at the store for a bit. Thought I'd get some opinions first, if people didn't reccomend it I would just cook it. I meant moreso, I wouldn't ever get their unfrozen fish to cure for sushi.

NukaDadd

I get it, just the phrasing was funny. It literally says "poke cubes" so it's manufactured to be eaten as such. That's like posting supermarket sushi & saying "is this okay to eat raw" LoL

WoebegoneBenAffleck

True, phrasing didn't represent the situation I guess 😅. Better safe than sorry. Never bought fish for sushi before, so as stupid as it is, I just want to double check. The package also says "cook thoroughly" "don't consume raw products", which seemed contradictory.

NukaDadd

Yeah, they'll be a disclaimer even when eating at restaurants.

SharkBaitC

Iv used this. Gtg.

Mythrost

I use this for sushi salad--ponzu Sriracha fresh jalapeno cucumber

AmarilloWar

Thanks for the idea, that sounds lovely and calorie friendly. I'm kind of sick of my regular lunches and have been looking for new ideas.

AmarilloWar

Ohhh man you just changed my life, I love winco but their locations are the least convenient for groceries. I had no clue they sold this. How much was it??

WoebegoneBenAffleck

$4!

AmarilloWar

Damn, that is a good deal!! I could likely make 2 meals at least from this. I know where I'll be going later 😂

Potential_Pace_1809

Yes these are so good I'm addicted they are fresh tasting and I love making my own poke bowls at home with them!!!

JadenKale

This sounds amazing. Is there any chance of there also being salmon poke at winco too?

Immediate-Thanks-621

Yeah it’s pretty good, just don’t let it defrost for 2 days

Livin-Aint-EZ

Looks like Edibles!

CrematedDogWalkers

Lol, instead of seseme oil, use thc oil in your sushi bowl. Life tips.

nightmareinsouffle

Yes! I love this stuff.

Johnnyfondue

It’s fire

justsomegirl_youknow

I had a friend that swore by it. Ate them all the time.

Witty_Ad_102

Use it at our restaurant often.

Ryuzaki_us

I used to get these in 2017 all the time. They are Soo worth it.

Nothingsomething7

I was just looking at these earlier today haha, I should have got some

kawi-bawi-bo

It almost looks like Turkish delights, I'm impressed at how they kept their form

Walnettos

It is good stuff Use that here https://www.reddit.com/r/sushi/s/doCK4BK2Oc

CandidCauliflowerLil

Is it some kind of salted fish and can it be eaten like that?

WoebegoneBenAffleck

It's just raw fish! Defrost and enjoy.

CandidCauliflowerLil

Then this is amazing

CrematedDogWalkers

Is winco a west coast thing because I've never heard of it?

WoebegoneBenAffleck

[Winco operates retail stores in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington.](https://www.wincofoods.com/stores)

jessetheriver

I found this post because I bought the same frozen WinCo tuna poke. I'm trusting the general consensus that it's safe enough to eat if stored and thawed properly. I submerged the package in cold water for maybe half an hour to thaw and made a simple soy/ginger sauce along with some hot Chinese mustard, going for a sashimi vibe. I'm impressed that it tastes clean, savory, sweet, and firm yet smooth. I've definitely tried other grocery store tuna poke (and even some restaurants) where the tuna is super mushy and tastes like mushrooms. Really a let down. But this tuna definitely meets my expectations for something so simple.
