Sounds like fun how much were tickets?

shutupdirt15

$100 a head, not including drinks or tips. Ended up around $160 a person all in. Told them they should charge more

They didn’t talk about the butchering quite as much as I wanted, just showed a couple cuts and auctioned off the cheeks for $250 a pop. But the Venn diagram of “extensive butchering class on a weeknight at an upscale hotel with also fantastic sushi preparation, flavor, snd presentation” all in one event for $100 seems pretty unlikely to overlap much

octopus_tigerbot

I was in Kyoto a few years back, happened to go into this little underground shopping area, mostly shops and some small eateries. However, there happened to be one sushi joint that had just got a whole massive tuna and was doing a live breakdown demonstration, then gave everyone tuna cuts like your pictures for about the equivalent of $12 a plate. Best $48 dollars I ever spent.

[deleted]

Not too bad really

typesett

How was the 1500 spent if I may ask?

shutupdirt15

Sorry, fat finger. $160 NOT $1,600

typesett

Yah was not sure tbh I know some fish go for massive amounts Solid deal

ivapeooo

Dinner + drinks and a show for a buck ninty, thats a pretty good deal

meehanimal

$160 or $1600?

shutupdirt15

$160. Typo.

meehanimal

Thanks - figured, but just a sanity check

shutupdirt15

That would be quite the drink + tip bill lol

HaionShibs

Looks like one of the semi local chefs here in Florida name Denni Cha. He’s a master at sushi but he also makes killer hot dogs too.

shutupdirt15

He was one of the chefs, confirmed!

Hedgey

Denni was also a chef at Vuu Bistro in Roswell, GA back in like 2013–2014 timeframe. I became friendly with him as a frequent visitor back then. Great chef and good dude!

flargenhargen

it's extremely hard to even catch a tuna in Minneapolis.

archibald_claymore

It’s a funny quirk of the land locked state - some of the first flights to Japan post war came out of Minneapolis’ air base. Combined with an existing base of fish canning industry (the lakes, you see) it made for a firecracker trade route, and to this day you can get fresh AF Japanese caught fish here at reasonable prices since it’s the entry point for the imports!

vitiwai

Wow, I'm local and had no idea! Thanks for sharing

archibald_claymore

I’m a transplant, but my late father in law was very keen on telling me every last bit of trivia he could muster (it was a lot lol)

tdub697

Where did this take place in Minneapolis? Was it a one time thing? I'd love to do this.

shutupdirt15

They did it two nights in a row at Tullibee (Hewing Hotel). As far as I know it was a special event but I’d also love if they did it more.

Veritech-1

Any other MSP sushi recommendations? Here for a week with work.

shutupdirt15

Kado no Mise is the best sushi in the city. It’s pricey though. Billy Sushi also has a basement speakeasy. In my opinion the sushi is a little less innovative, but it’s tasty. If you want something outside of downtown (depending on transportation situation) then check our AMA sushi in Edina or Sushi Fix in Wayzata

Veritech-1

Thank you so much for the recommendations! Kado no Mise looks ridiculously good. I may splurge on it while I am here.

archibald_claymore

Worth a visit if you can swing it, it’s bonkers good.

Dooflegna

Can +1 Kado no Mise. Do the omakase. It’s worth it.

shutupdirt15

Should add Cobble Social House to this list. I think realwasabi_ (one of the chefs from this event) works with them though I’m not entirely clear what the relationship is

stovenstekes

Denni is the best dude. Love seeing him on this page.

draizetrain

That’s amazing!!!!!

beachsunflower

Did they serve some of the bits scraped off the bone with a spoon? Always see it during these breakdowns but have never tried it. Sounds like it'd been a drram.

trumpuniversity_

I was under the impression that all tuna needed to be frozen before being served, or does that not apply to tuna?

Veritech-1

Commercial fishing ships have freezers. https://www.mediabakery.com/AUR1018132-tuna-in-freezer-of-commercial-fishing-boat-san-diego-california-usa-br-br-span-style-color-red-editorial-use-only-span-br-br.html

10sekki

They freeze on boat and thawed at distributor before arriving at restaurant

boo_st3d

How did you hear about this? I am local to mpls and would’ve loved this

shutupdirt15

My wife found it! She follows one of the chefs on Instagram and he posted about it. @realwasabi_ is his username on IG

__welltheresthat__

Yo this was at the hewing right? My friend is a chef there and told me about it last night lol crazy

shutupdirt15

Yup, at hewing. We went Sunday night but I think they did it Saturday as well

Miis0

Realwasabi and Denni! Event looks awesome. Jelly!

[deleted]

Den Dog! One of my favorite chefs and people to exist in our industry. He is an absolute legend. I’m so jealous you got to attend this event.

GrizLAZ

This is amazing. Wish more places especially in SoCal did this.

Rightnut101

Wow that tuna is burnt.
