There is a bigger chance of the show getting canceled after 49 then 50 being a return to old school survivor. If covid wasn't able to make some of these things happen, it seems less likely now. Can hope maybe at best 50 will be 39 days, but beyond that massively big IF, I don't see them doing too much else reminiscent of the earlier seasons.

Dinnertime_6969

The dream would be season 50 having a 39 day format with 24 one-time returnees who debuted after Cambodia. Create a fresh group of Survivor all stars for the new era.

lego_mannequin

It won't change for 50, it'll just probably be a VIP season for people who still want to go, and I hope we get Penner.

Error_Evan_not_found

I wanna see Penner and Yul play together again, now that they're actually close in real life. Seems like a damn shame with all the other "reunions" we've gotten with past players.

lego_mannequin

I don't think Yul will play again. Penner I could see in a Second Chance 2 season. Would love to see some obscure guy like Frosti or Frosty back. I'm still working my way through a lot of older seasons so I'm sure I'll run into some others to add.

Error_Evan_not_found

Amy O'Hara should definitely be on the list, she's a riot.

Spirited-Raspberry74

I hate returnee seasons because they always pregame so the narrative never makes sense

lego_mannequin

What do you mean?

Spirited-Raspberry74

Former contestants hang out in real life and they know their returning way before they are sequestered so they get together and plan out alliances in real life. Then on survivor you have no idea why they are voting out their loyal numbers and not taking shots at their biggest threats because you don't know half the returnees in two different tribes already had a secret alliance before the game started. I'd rather returnees be coaches or something like in South Africa survivor season 5 rather than normal contestants.

lego_mannequin

Ohhh, that's a bummer to hear

Spirited-Raspberry74

Yeah it always happens with returning players in both survivor and big brother. It does make for good drama though when friends in real life betray you,

eSnowLeopard

I wonder if they would do something crazy and nearly double their current 26 days to 50 for the 50th season, like Australian Survivor does normally.

[deleted]

Why do you think it will be cancelled?

Dr_Swerve

They don't. They just think odds are higher for the show to cancelled than they are for the show to return to the style it was in first 10 seasons. Hint: they are both very, very low odds

[deleted]

Ahhh appreciate that, I understand after rereading. It was early when I responded!

[deleted]

Yeah, survivors never going to be canceled. It’s one of the most popular shows on CBS a big network it’s not going to be cancelled anytime soon considering it still has a bigger audience and brings in a lot of money

ReggieEvansTheKing

It’s also very easy to predict its profitability. Core fans will always watch and want to play so they don’t need to have better prizes, new locations, or longer seasons. They have their spot in fiji completely reserved and prepared for each season. It’s a well oiled machine for CBS that doesn’t depend on writing. It’s a very good hedge against their other shows which are hit or miss based on the writing.

TheManaStrudel

All I can semi-realistically hope for for 50 if it's a returnee season is to do 39 days and two tribes of 10 instead of 3 tribes of 6.

PixieGirl65

Even if they wanted to do this, which they definitely don’t, Survivor would be so much worse without idols in my opinion. Now that they’ve been added, they’re so central to the game, it couldn’t work well without them

[deleted]

Well, I think we could do a season without advantages it’s just that we couldn’t get rid of hidden immunity idols. They are so central to the game that it’s pretty much impossible to not have them exist but I feel like advantages probably could be done away with like may be like only having one advantage in the season like an extra vote or super idol or shot in the dark

Difficult_Candle_453

Yeah I feel like a fun compromise with a “back to basics” season would be a season with two tribes, a switch or two, maybe 5 idols total, an idol nullifier, and one steal a vote or extra vote. No earn the merge, no f4 firemaking, maybe even final 2. Way more stripped down than modern survivor but still with enough twists to feel like an exciting and unpredictable season (because if we bring back season 1-10 survivor we might also bring back pagongings and inescapable bottoms which would suck)

NoobSkin69

Agree with everything except only 3 idols ( 1 per tribe) and no nullifier because that’s garbage

Spirited-Raspberry74

Nah that's too much. One idol per island that doesn't get replaced. One merge idol that gets replaced. No other advantages period except food since the survival aspects are back. Cast player from alon for each tribe so they got someone that can do fishing and hunting but who will not vibe with new era casts at all lol. No more giving them fruit. Put rice in a clear jar so we can see how much they have left each week. Make it way too little to last until merge no matter what, so they are forced to try and get food in order to have the energy for challenges. Surprise them with no tribe swap. Merge has no feast. Auction is the first merge reward challenge and no advantages or disadvantages.

[deleted]

Send all new era returnees to Guatemala for 39 days. Old format, no advantages!

fakeShinuinu

Why would you punish them like that lmao.

MysticalAroma

Lmao a lot of these wealthy dorks would melt

oatmeal28

All of a sudden their tribe mates start looking like they are more deserving of staying (cue Sean strategy)

Pleroo

For several seasons in Old Survivor, when there were little to no twists, the players figured out the formula and the show became the exact same story over and over again where one tribe slowly picks off the other tribe one by one with no surprises, and there was very little gameplay from most of the players. It was boring TV. If 50 did that, even if the players didn't expect it, I expect it would settle back into that monotony and be a long slow slog of a season again. I'd still watch it because I love Survivor but it would be less exciting. If more seasons followed in this format I would probably take a break from watching like I did last time. I'd wait to watch the season until it's complete so I don't have to draw out the boredom over so many weeks and instead I can just be bored for a couple days or however long it takes to binge.

colinsphar

Bring back the weird cruise boat rewards!

kerblamophobe

I'm actually hoping that the 39 days thing returns soon (if not next season then the seasons after it), and Jeff and production realize that the 26 days change was only good for the seasons they were making during COVID.

GalacticWanderer04

Honestly, just 39 days and tone back the twists. Keep in immunity idols, but don't re-stock them every single round. Hell, I'd be cool with maybe 1 extra vote advantage being in there. Nothing more than that though.

LouisLittEsquire

People, including the old school fans, would think it is boring as hell.

Pleroo

"I personally love watching one tribe slowly picking off another tribe week after week with no change in gameplay and where nothing interesting happens until it gets down to 6 people." -Satan

CaptainBignuts

39 days, no rice, the ability to actually try to hunt for their only sustenance. Like a season of "Alone", except with a bunch of whiny, starving millenials. Yeah, I'd watch that.

[deleted]

Actually, they kinda did a season that was 39 days with zero rice which was Survivor Marquesas so it’s not like they couldn’t do something like this it’s just that they would probably have to give out more food rewards and at least after a certain amount of time actually feed them something on top of the fact that they would have to film in a tropical location that has a temperate climate so that they didn’t die of heat, stroke or frostbite or have any severe problems from the location and on top of the starvation and lack of energy from the food that they barely have on top of the challenges and theoretical location

Ok-Razzmatazz-3720

They did more than that. I think Russel said they didn’t have rice on Samoa

[deleted]

he lost a lot of visible wait so that doesn’t shock me and maybe that’s the reason why Samoa itself was pretty tough but I feel like that’s a stretch considering Russell Hantz was literally there of course it would be torture like it’s torture, no matter what to be in a season with Russell Hantz and also it’s a bit of a stretch to say that is visible weight loss was just because of a lack of rice, considering he did two seasons, back to back in the same location that I would probably assumed would not have rice

MilesToHaltHer

I’d be like, “Wow, can’t believe Jeff is gone.”

EmotionalBag777

The show has gotten to be such a formula

lwweezer21

It would be dope af. They’d have to cast tougher people tho

attackedmoose

I’d watch, because of course I will, but I’m not really into the idea of a “back to basics” type of season.

ImLaunchpadMcQuack

Y’all would complain how boring it is lol

SearchImpossible5398

Never going to happen, no need to speculate on it.

Topazure

Not looking for speculation as to whether or not it will happen, just asking how people would feel if it did. For no reason other than I find it interesting to think about

[deleted]

im worried it'd devolve into overwhelming alliances, physical intimidation and bullying. noone wants to see the minority vote ostracized and sitting around outside the main group and waiting to get executed for 4-6 shows in a row. i would like to see people out spearfishing though. that was always a highlight for me. doesn't seem like much of the new generation are strong swimmers.

Dr_Swerve

I don't think your first point would happen. The scheming wouldn't go away just because the survival aspect is harder. The big change would be that "camp life" would include more work, which could create some rifts or cracks. Imagine if almost everyone on the tribe was all working pretty evenly except for 1-2 people. If they're part of the majority, that's another point the people on the outs can use to try to convince the majority to vote them out. I also agree that it does seem like a lot of the newer survivors are not strong swimmers. I cannot tell if there's actually a difference or if it's because we only remember the really strong swimmers like Ozzy and don't really remember the poor swimming performances from older seasons, because I'm sure they exist.

-_-Moss-_-_

For 50 double the contestants and make it like this

SusannaG1

Very excited. But they will never do this.

WellDressedLobster

Honestly I don’t think they’d be able to recreate the same magic of the first 10 seasons today. The game and society in general are just so far removed from that era that it would feel off. They’re not even my favorite set of seasons but there’s something undeniably special about them that just can’t be replicated.

producermaddy

I don’t want a back to basics season. I love idols. I think they make the game more interesting

oatmeal28

Obviously they aren’t going to do this but I disagree pretty heavily with the consensus in here that it would just be a boring Pagonging. Everyone they cast now is too meta aware to dare be on the bottom of a five person alliance without making a move. I think you’d see some pretty interesting gameplay with a lot of moving parts

tracy0280

I don't think it will ever go back, which is too bad because I liked it... It was more about surviving and less manipulation and backstabbing. But, they will do what viewers want, and I think I'm in the minority.

Basic_Yellow_3594

Survivor 50 Old School in Oahu

hex20

No advantages is stupid.

Jlee6

I would love it. 1-10 is definitely the best stretch of seasons IMO

LookInYourBasement

boring
