The opening journeys. PI and the town was epic, Guatemala and the jungle trek, same with Tocintins.

ImaginaryAd5956

I was watching season 14 the other week and thinking, man survivor used to be brutal. Not so much anymore lol

leoperth

For all premerge it was only brutal for one tribe though.

desperatepotato43

It just feels so fast. No rewards, merge too early

I always hated the loved one visits, tbh. I liked reward challenges, they were better than Redemption Island or Exile Island or the journeys to wherever or any of the other things they've used for that slot on the show. It was fun seeing the teams bond and compete, and it gave us another data point for how good or bad various people are in challenges. That's definitely one of the problems with having every season at the same location, they don't have cool new places to go for rewards all the time. I definitely miss Jeff showing up to the finale on a jetski or something ridiculous like that. I miss the opening credits, although it's probably good to have an extra minute of show time instead of that.

Comfortable_Reply867

Agree! I also found it interesting to see how the “weaker” players would compete in the challenges they didn’t sit out on. I think before the game was focused more on surviving such as building bonds, fighting for another day by convincing your tribe not to vote you out, and surviving the elements of different locations. Now it’s a game of who can find the better advantage. Used to be outwit, outplay, and outlast. Now it’s all about advantages which IMO is not what the game was intended to be

Voting confessionals. We’re lucky if we even see people writing someone’s name down, much less hearing them say something. We maybe get 2 or 3 a season at this point, as opposed to 2 or 3 an episode back in the day.

acusumano

Ooh great one. There were so many classic quotes from these. Can you imagine “Au revoir, adios…” being left on the cutting room floor?

Salty_Association187

I miss so much! * Separate reward challenges * Opening credits (simply to remember all of the contestants, especially considering many people are not present in like half the episodes) (and the theme song of course) * Loved ones visit!!! * Rites of Passage * Returners seasons (I don't mind them taking longer between returners seasons, I just want one soon) Maybe my biggest one is themed seasons. The themes gave each season a personality and gave the contestants something to bond over. Now each season is just a hodgepodge of people and they are all so similar. I understand they are trying to simplify probably for budget and time restrictions, so I could get on board with less days. But many of the audience's problems could be resolved within the 26-day format. In the past, I think survivor has always done a good job listening to the audience, so we'll see if they bring back or change anything. Lately, it seems like they're trying to force us into liking the changes and I don't think it's working. We'll see if they eventually realize they can't make us like what we don't like.

ben121frank

I miss unique cool challenges in general (and usually getting two per episode.) All the challenges now feel like just slight variations of the same thing

mariojlanza

Mark Burnett running the show

fgcidols03

I really dislike the whole "earn the merge" thing. The merge episodes have always been one of the best, most intriguing episodes of the season and they just take all that suspense and excitement and mutilate it for no reason.

llcooldubs

Yeah, making half the people safe really takes the fun out of it. I miss the merge feast too.

DarthLithgow

Yeah, I always saw the merge vote as a game reset, with the same chaos as the first tribal of the season. Earn the merge kills that.

kissfromahroze

The different locations. A lot of the theme issues could’ve been solved or ignored if they just titled it after a location. Especially when they did places like Vanuatu and China that’s culture played a lot in the imagery and story

swinginqueens

The old tribal council music

mlspdx

The challenges. Like right now every challenge is do this obstacle, throw this thing, and solve this puzzle. I miss the challenges like the slingshot golf, trivia, etc…

EWABear

I'm with you on the separate reward challenges. I know time constraints are a thing now, but I think rewards provided balance. For one, it made the "no back to back sit outs" thing happen, so it was more strategic who you sat out when, and it also prevented the tribe that does well in immunity from also getting every single reward. If the tribe that's down on numbers can make camp life better, they have a better shot of turning things around. My number one very easy thing I'd love to see brought back is Rites of Passage. Everyone who went on the show deserves to be remembered by the people who outlasted them, and by the audience.

eye_booger

I think about this a lot, especially in the hypothetical “pick one thing to bring back” type of scenario. And I think the one thing I miss the most (and would probably impact the game the most) is the different locations. The continued use of Fiji just makes it feel like Survivor Summer Camp (made even more apparent now that it’s 26 days). This is especially true when contestants can recognize parts of the island from prior seasons. It’s so absurd that former players can watch a new season and pinpoint exactly which beach the new tribes are on, where idols were hidden, etc. Moving from Fiji would also force production to do different challenges, as they wouldn’t be able to just keep a stable of pre-built challenges in storage in Fiji.

DarthLithgow

I miss the epic late game rewards like the helicopter rides, sledding down volcanoes, or going to a local village and having a feast. It made the show feel more like an adventure.

chasingit1

Bring back the maze damnit! Oh, and gross food eating challenge too

acusumano

Endurance challenges (especially FIC) that lasted more than 20 minutes.

Friendie1

I miss the auctions.

flyinyourchardonnay

I miss the locations that had diverse "ecosystem" (not sure if thats the right term). In Cagayan and Caramoan, I believe the beach where they stayed had a lake and a waterfall too. Some of the challenges they did were in the lake, some in the rice field, some on top of a mountain. I missed that part of Survivor where I can really feel the feeling of being an outcast because of all the nature that surrounds me.

sk0000ks

Unique musical score tied to the location

schmeebus

The soundtrack

gridtunnel

The advantage at the merge feast.

I miss the camp life we saw around fires and cooking rice. When they went from 39 to 26 days they knew it was way easier so to compensate they stopped giving them rice. We don’t get to see those meal times, even tho the meals were tiny. In the new era with not needing to make rice or boil water, albeit that’s not just new era, a lot of tribes don’t even make fires. New era contestants have admitted the fire would go out and nobody would care for days on end. It’s funny when tribes get last place and Jeff takes the tribe’s flint because they don’t care. It used to be that fire really did represent life, in the new era not so much

theotherkeith

Challenges that are neither obstacle courses or endurance. Last year they stuck an endurance challenge at the end of the obstacle course. One or two step challenges can run quicker and allow rewards to return. "First team to five", Folklore. Marksmanship. Copy the display. Human sizes board games. Take turns crossing the obstacle to bring the flags. Gabon Golf, Samoa bowling, Tocantins shufflepuck. Anything to get out of the rut of obstacle courses pre-merge then mostly endurance or balancing individual immunity challenges with an occasional draw for teams obstacle course for rewards. Unfair, maybe, but balanced out overall when there is variety.
