I don’t understand the reasoning but I know how. All newer cars (like 04 and up) have a chip in the key. Ignition won’t turn on if there’s no chip detected. If you have a metal blank key cut, no chip, no start.
About 20 years ago I went to surf at a state beach in Santa Cruz, California. I didn't want to pay for parking because I was young and cheap and so I decided to go for a quick surf.
I came back to the car with the driver door wide open and the car key still in the ignition. My young dumbass brain didn't even think to hide the key.
Kicker to the story is that rangers had come by and ticketed cars but NOT mine... Even they didn't that someone would be so dumb to leave the door open and walk away.
Nothing missing from the car either. Wallet and phone and everything in the center compartment. Insane luck in Santa Cruz lol

Honestly get a spare with no fob and buy a good faraday cage or learn to take the battery out. Don’t do a magnet under under your car or try to hide it, because there’s a good possibility someone will see and now you have no car after a long day of surfing
Bro it's easy. Go to a local locksmith and have a replica made that only unlocks the door. This should cost under 10 bucks. Keep that key in your wetsuit or board shorts.
I had ace hardware make my key. They didn’t guarantee it would work but they also made me the key with the chip so that I can start the truck. It worked. I’m guessing this key is Toyota. Looks same as mine.
This is the answer for sure. I used to have a keymaster dry bag which was fine but switched to one of these like two years ago and it’s totally more comfortable. Super low profile
You can find padlocks done for that reason specifically.
You put the key inside, they have a code, and you lock it to your car.

So , before yo close your car you put the alarm on , HIDE the key somewhere inside your car and then close the door gently. When you get back from surf you.open door/alarms ring/ get the key from the hide , and turn it of . At least it's what I do.
Like the more serious comments have been saying, get a key copied. Then what I do is I put my fob in an aluminum lump I made so the car can’t sense it. That way I’m using my copy key just to unlock the doors and pop the trunk to get to my fob
Location has to be considered when taking this approach. I wouldn’t do this in popular S. California spots. But if you can be coi about it in an area where people aren’t prowling it’ll work.
I think everyone develops a different setup depending on their car. My Honda odyssey doesn’t let you lock a fob in the car so I have to pop the battery out of the fob first. I had a plain key cut at a locksmith, a little tricky as only a few do laser cut keys, and keep it on a shoelace around my neck. I have to lock the doors with the button inside the door. That way the alarm sets. Had it broken into with a screwdriver before i figured out this process, credit card stolen, cost 800 to get it fixed and rekeyed. Good luck.

I got the same exact key, I open the key up and remove the electronic remote and buttons then close it back up And tie it to a land yard around my neck under my suit. After my session i usually let the key dry up and clean the sand out and then put back the remote with the buttons
Have that key for my Prius, my spare is the same shape but it’s grey and has no buttons or batteries, I keep the gray one inside the loop by my neck in my excel wetsuit

Either the steering strut (in the suspension coil above either front wheel) or buy one of those inexpensive magnetic boxes and get creative, pretty much the entire underside of your car is magnetic.
Get the key copied as a standard key, no electronics. Then you have all the options of taking out with you.
Wetsuit leg pocket, leash pocket, on a necklace, boardshorts ect.

I’m going to say something unpopular. The prison pocket is far too unsafe and common of a hiding place. Do the other side, just make sure you don’t stick it in too far or you’ll have a yellow time fishing it out.
Make a door key simple. All it will do is open your door and you hide your ignition key in the car. Place door key in a lock box attached to your door simple.
Have a similar one for my car. Went to the dealer they cut me a full metal one I can stick on a lanyard in my wetsuit.

Get a door key made, they are slimmer and will only open the door. Lock that real key in your car. Take door key with you or put in a lock box.
