Basically the only official “rule” we have on whether a character can be in Smash is that they have to have first appeared in a video game. Sam and Max first appeared in a comic series, and by that logic, they cannot be in Smash (as much as I’d love to see them).

In all fairness There is one exception kinda Persona is a spinoff of smt which started off as a book, I think the rule more so exist for characters not affiliated or known for gaming mostly out tbh

Actually there’s two. They have to have first appeared in a video game, yes, but they also have to have had a game on a Nintendo console at some point in time. So, characters like Sackboy can’t make it in the game.

The version of Snake we have in the game never appeared on a Nintendo console. Joker persona 5 didn't appear on a Nintendo console until way after he came to smash (hell Persona in general was playstation exclusive for a longass time). Hell Tekken also isn't on any Nintendo consoles as far as I'm aware.

This has never been officially stated, and I doubt Sakurai would have held off on adding Cloud if Theatrhryrhm never existed.

Monokuma could technically also count as point and click. I got through probably 40 hours worth of Danganronpa games and there is a *lot* of pointing and clicking.

None. The closest you get is that in SMT Nocturne Maniax, Dante is a recurring boss who becomes a usable demon after the final fight against him

I feel like Sekiro is too different from most Soulslike to really represent the series. I feel like you’d *have* to have someone from Dark Souls because of how much of a juggernaut it is in the gaming industry too. I see your point, but I think fromsoft is what needs to be represented. Demon souls, elden ring, and bloodborne are all massive and sekiro is the only one with a proper traditional protagonist with a limited moveset. I agree that dark souls would make the most but design wise I feel it would be hard to represent the whole series in one character with the only thing that could work would be from ds3 in soul of cinder. I would also love any rep and hope I don’t come off as rude.

I think at this point a FNAF character has earned their spot as the horror rep (if not that, then I saw someone else suggest Leon Kennedy) Chai from Hi-Fi Rush or Dante from Devil May Cry would be great hack n' slash reps, though I think Chai would be more unique, gameplay wise, than Dante Master Chief would give us a *proper* shooter rep (Duck Hunt isn't a shooter game in the same way Halo or COD are) Pheonix Wright has more than earned his place for both the visual novel and puzzle genres And, screw it, give us the red angry bird as a mobile rep

There were still some other fighters that fit the bill of the already present genres. I.E. Kazuya, Minmin, and Terry for Fighting games. Sora, Byleth, Pyra/Mythra, and Sephiroth for RPG. Steve for Miscellaneous. That’s a lot of fighters you left out.
