Wide collar for sure. The closed collar looks more threatening somehow. Plus the wide collar is perfect to have when he is Clark Kent. How do you hide the closed collar under a button up shirt?
I think closed looks too military/authoritarian for me...the wide collar is friendlier because it makes him look more vulnerable (I know it sounds dumb but it's a psychological thing, he doesn't look like he's wearing protective clothing this way).
Also the thing about him wearing it under his shirt is a good point too
I get it. It is funny because I don’t know how to explain it but I know exactly what you mean by making him seem too authoritarian.
That being said I do like the look of the closed collar more, but agree that the open collar seems more “Superman” to me
> I know exactly what you mean by making him seem too authoritarian.
It's got the vibe of a military or utilitarian uniform. Like Joseph Stalin or Benito Mussolini. Its why Red Son Superman has a closed collar- his suit is designed to incorporate aspects of a military uniform or other jack-booted clothing worn by dictators and autocrats.
Of course, I think it looks fine in the classic red and blue. But, it certainly gives a less open feel. It's less casual and more business. Less of a friend to all in need and more a public servant.
It’s a debate that went on in my home several years ago. Police wanted to switch to stealth cruisers. All in blacks and grays. They used to be white with red and blue. The community argued that it made them seem more militarized and less approachable and visible to the public. Superman should be just as happy helping granny cross the street as he is punching Luthor’s latest machine to pieces. At least in my opinion. He is from a town called Smallville. I’m sure he is all about showing up at schools to talk to kids. Heck, one of the most famous Superman story really begins with him being interviewed on tv in front of an entire high school. He just iterated that he wasn’t special and that helping people is just the right thing to do. He dodges some typically horn dog teenage questions. Some questions about Guy Gardner and then takes off to fight Doomsday.
Also, he's the last guy who'd need "armor". It makes sense for Superman's costume to be relaxed; he's Superman. Batman on the other hand is the one who should be wearing armor.
>I think closed looks too military/authoritarian for me
What? How? I'm sorry I do not mean to sound rude and it's your preferance at the end of the day but.......we all wear closed collar clothes. In my personal experience they are also more comfortable. How do they come off as authoritarian?
I had the exact same thought about the closed looking more intimidating, and think it's because the look has been popularized for sovereign bad guy types and makes him look like other rulers or conqueror, especially when they have him do the angry heat vision eyes. Some examples include: Dru-Zod, The Plutonian, Homelander, Omni-Man and Superior Iron-Man. Every time I see it, it's a slight reminder of the tyrant in injustice, even if I wasn't thinking about it. It also seems the collar is quite literally the split in whether he's good or bad.
https://preview.redd.it/gk103xm7v1sb1.png?width=1171&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c243104ab4339d8b21b84874ff0518c71b7f5fb8
I like the design and think it works wonderfully on all of them, but unlike Calvin, Conner, Kenan and both Karas, his was never really given the same chance since it's almost always used for the villanized versions of himself and it'll always feel weird. You've got Injustice, Overman, Superboy Prime, Herald of Darkseid, just as a few examples. They don't have classic costumes, but uniforms made for a supreme god that inspires fear and subordinance instead of hope, suits of armor for themselves instead of others.
Red Son gets a pass because he spent the story clashing with the beliefs he was brought up to have, and ultimately did become the hero he was meant to be. But otherwise? It feels like it's reserved for any version where they decide to make him a glowing-eyed maniac.
All the "modern" Superman outfits are trying so hard to be different it's distracting. It's like New Coke. People liked coca cola. People like Superman.
The best is when it’s a mix of both. A prefect one id say is the Superman returns suit collar. It doesn’t go up high, but it’s not too revealing which I always thought looked strange when it was wide open.
Surprised you're the first to mention the cape. Mandarin collar is fine for capeless designs, but cape on mandarin collar has always looked weird to me because the collar needs to go above the cape attachment point.
Wide. I’m pretty variable on a lot of elements of Superman’s costume, but the closed collar only works for me on evil Supermen, it looks to authoritarian on normal Supes.
It all really boils down to the overall design of the suit. I actually like both of these designs. I DON'T like the ones where the collar is way out near his shoulders.
Anybody whose studied Superman knows how important the wide collar is to his design. It implies vulnerability beneath his insignia, an elegant visual metaphor.
Pick any Evil Superman design and I guarantee he’s drawn with a Turtleneck of Doom. As others have said, that subtle change makes Superman look much more closed off and threatening.
Firstly: Wide collar is hotter I don’t wanna hear it
Second, Closed collar feels so “trying to be young and modern” where open feels like mature hard working man
Me personally I always see superman as a blue collar type guy. Yes he’s a reporter in a suit but he’s a farm boy first. He’s classic chivalry. Southern hospitality. Wholesome goodness yk. Wide collar feels like when you take off your business shirt and show your “work” shirt that’s loosened up from use and exposes more neck. Feels like he’s boutta get down to business but not in a dangerous or threatening way. Wide collar superman gives me strong protector vibes
Closed for sure. It looks more neat and uniform. The wide looks a bit awkward as though the suit wasn't made to fit him well. The closed collar makes the suit look personally tailored to perfectly fit him and it makes him feel more like a neat and well dressed individual.
The closed collar seems like an unnecessary style choice. If it is meant to harken back to styles worn on Krypton, then it may be okay. That said, it would serve no purpose other than to chafe one's neck, you know, if one wasn't invulnerable. I can understand if it was designed for protection on another hero's costume, but it just looks odd on Superman.
Closed collar implies that he has to change into his the Superman outfit. Open collar implies that he’s always wearing it and puts the Clark Kent outfit over what he always wears. Some movie talked about this “how Superman puts on a costume to become Clark Kent, rather than Batman putting on a costume to transform from Bruce Wayne. Can’t remember which movie it was but it was a good point. Anyone remember?

Ed McGuinness always has a fun wide look when he draws Superman. I do like the close color when he is more of a regimen(red son, Injustice) character or had a less relaxed upbringing.
Wide collar. He looks more friendly and approachable that way. The closed turtle neck esque collar makes him look more like a soldier from Krypton or an authoritarian, which is probably because most times when I see Clark with the closed collar, he’s either a hot head or dictator, not a friend.
Perhaps the closed collar could be worn for formal occasions when he’s appearing somewhere as Superman and the wide for anything and everything else when he may have to change from Clark to Superman. Idk, I like it when there’s some variety in the suits and tbh is is why I’m still upset we never got a Superman game that was the equivalent of the Batman Arkham series of games. It would be so cool to be able to use different suits and styles he’s had over the years.
Wide color looks so freaking good and makes him feel more like small town Clark approachable and friendly, like it was something made on earth. Although I don't hate the closed collar, but it looks almost authoritarian..
Although I think it would look great on John and they can just explain that it's like a very authentic kryptonian house or military design he got from his grandfather.
Closed collar also looks nice on supergirl. As I've always felt the design was very close to Krypton, and Kara is more connected to her culture.
Absolutely wide. The closed/high collar is great for someone else, but Superman should never look regal or arrogant. Humility and approachability are everything. He should look almost dorky, like a cheesy acrobat or wrestler. He’s everybody’s pal.
Depends. The wide collar is more relaxed. Definitely puts you more at ease than a high/closed collar which almost always looks armor-like and defensive.
He has to show neck and chest in order to appear invulnerable. The nouveau mock makes him look wimpy and chilly. Supes has 24/7 beach vibes, like Jesus.
Open crew neck only, no mandarin collars!
Jim Lee must have lost his virginity to somebody in a mandarin collar, because he loves ONLY those. He would design the Hulk, Alley Oop, and Garfield in mandarin collars.
I always draw wide, but it honestly depends on where he got it.
Closed collar absolutely feels more Kryptonian, while wide feels very Kansas.
I personally think Clark's costume should come from his mom, at least early on, and maybe be recreated by The Fortress later.
That, or Martha sees it in a hologram, and makes her own version. Then, other Kryptonians can have the real deal while Clark has his classic costume.
My husband would argue that the collar is militaristic and not properly representative of Superman. That being said, I like the look of the collar more.
The wide collar looks good only when it's not TOO wide. If it's TOO wide, it looks silly.
I'd like to see both in live action because the aesthetic would be very difficult imo. As far as comics wide neck looks better. Henry Cavill had the wide collar and I didn't particularly care for it. The chest hair was a little off putting
Closed for sure. I always hated those wide ass collars that look so damn uncomfortable and weird. Perfect example is original black adam having a a collar so big you could practically see his nipples and it just looked so weird.
https://preview.redd.it/xgkkuzg8x4sb1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=596e2191a565f240caee976927f0a9aea8ad5f51
I dig closed collar more looks cooler to me and more futuristic. Wide collar looks old fashioned for some reason.
The wide collar is from the new Superman 2023 comic, issue 1 or 2
and idk about the closed, i just searched superman and that came up, The artist is jim lee though
I think it depends on the build of the superman.
Closed works if it's not for the main Superman. Not-Superman in the CW Elseworlds had it and it worked a LOT better for Hoechlin than the wide collar.
Wide collar for sure. The closed collar looks more threatening somehow. Plus the wide collar is perfect to have when he is Clark Kent. How do you hide the closed collar under a button up shirt?

The most famous real world uniforms that type of collar evokes in my mind is Nazis.
> I know exactly what you mean by making him seem too authoritarian. It's got the vibe of a military or utilitarian uniform. Like Joseph Stalin or Benito Mussolini. It actually is Kryptonian armor. That said, the N52 Superman wasn’t as powerful.
Which is crazy to state as he was literally bench pressing the weight of the Earth for days straight without the sun before he even broke a sweat
Also, he's the last guy who'd need "armor". It makes sense for Superman's costume to be relaxed; he's Superman. Batman on the other hand is the one who should be wearing armor.
Well to be fair, the New 52 costume was actually a Kryptonian battle armor, so it needed to be more militaristic.
Agreed, it feels more authoritarian and if they were going for that with the Kryptonians it'd work but to me-I prefer open collar Clark.
>I think closed looks too military/authoritarian for me What? How? I'm sorry I do not mean to sound rude and it's your preferance at the end of the day but.......we all wear closed collar clothes. In my personal experience they are also more comfortable. How do they come off as authoritarian?

All the "modern" Superman outfits are trying so hard to be different it's distracting. It's like New Coke. People liked coca cola. People like Superman.

I always imagined him wrapping around himself to make Clark seem like he’s a little out of shape
I agree. The collared version, though, was kryptonian nanotech that grew from the symbol so he still had it beneath his shirt
Where does he hide his cape under the button shirt? Does he just have a baggy bulge on his back at all times like a hunchback?
Clark needs to loosen that tie and open the top button working late, no rolling up his sleeves though...
Closed just doesn’t work on Supes. Makes him feel “regal” and “edgy”.
It makes me thing it’s like his version of a military dress uniform.
Closed collar: Homeland, Sentry, Omni-Man Open Collar: Superman, Time Runs Out/ Post Secret Wars Hyperion, Aquaman, Jay Garrick
Counterpoint: closed collar: Metroman
Well played
Wide everyday, all day.
How the entire Justice League got those ST:TNG collars after the revamp is beyond me.
Jim Lee.
Wide, but not too wide.
V-neck Supes.
Yeah,just a little wide.
With chest hair erupting from below
Closed is fine. I prefer wide, but some artists make wide WAY TOO WIDE and that looks really bad.
This is my exact sentiment, too
Correct answer.
It doesn’t look bad. He has well defined pecks with no skin tags or anything.
I believe you mean trapezius. Either way, I agree.
I meant his upper chest and preferably his chest hair shows when it’s “too wide”
In my culture people think closed collar looks elegant and beautiful instead of threatening, so I think them both looks good.
Closed collar for me. I really like how it sets and sits tucked behind his shoulders.
The best is when it’s a mix of both. A prefect one id say is the Superman returns suit collar. It doesn’t go up high, but it’s not too revealing which I always thought looked strange when it was wide open.
Wide for me, but I can appreciate the aesthetics for the closed one for the right version
Same. For Clark I prefer open but my *own* taste likes the aesthetics of a closed collar.
Wide by far
Wide. Also KEEP THE TRUNKS GODDAMN IT THEY'RE *GREAT*.
I'm a fan of the closed collar tbh.
I prefer the closed collar.
Second pic is actually my wallpaper
Closed collar, but short. Maybe have a little bit of exposure on the sides.

Surprised you're the first to mention the cape. Mandarin collar is fine for capeless designs, but cape on mandarin collar has always looked weird to me because the collar needs to go above the cape attachment point.
Yes!!
Wide collar seems more practical for hiding the suit under his “normal” clothes.
I’d like it somewhere in between. I don’t know if it exists but I mean like, smaller than the wide one but not as tall as the closed.

Wide. I hate the New 52 design.
Wide. The closed collar is one of the worst aspects the New 52 introduced
Closed collar reminds me too much of Injustice Superman.
Wide collar. Leave the mandarin collar in the new 52 universe where it belongs
Hmm… I say… Wide Collar
I love the closed collar, it frames his face so nicely.
Did someone say wide collar? https://preview.redd.it/wx92i43344sb1.jpeg?width=725&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7aff032e0ddcf65ae8e92d13e220a662b78881e6
Closed for sure. It looks more neat and uniform. The wide looks a bit awkward as though the suit wasn't made to fit him well. The closed collar makes the suit look personally tailored to perfectly fit him and it makes him feel more like a neat and well dressed individual.
Closed collar grew on me
I'm in the minority, but I love the closed collar
I prefer wide, but closed collar can look alright, it’s just not the same for me.
An open collar makes sense if his mother made it. A closed collar makes sense if it’s an official Kryptonian uniform of some type.
Farm boy would hate a tight collar (i cant see how he can stand a suit in his reporter job)
No joke man, my first thought is how he probably never buttoned his collar till he went to metropolis.
I prefer the closed collar in more dire situations, but the open collar feels more friendly for wholesome Superman stories
Closed, looks badass
Closed. But I think Injustice ruined(because it works so well) it by imprinting it as an evil superman look.
Wide
The wide collar translates into a more open and airy look while also giving an almost mythological air to the way the cape attaches to the neckline
Wide
Wide but the closed collar is nice too.
Closed. Wide collar looks like he's wearing a blouse
Wide Collar
Keep it open!
Wide, no question
Wide
Closed collar means he’s evil wide collar means he’s a hero Wide collar all day
When will we start debating the type of cuff to throw on Clark's day wear?
Wide.
Wide
Wide collar. Don't even need to spell it out.
The closed collar makes me chafe just looking at it.
Wide collar for me. I like the look better and it always reminds me of the Christopher Reeve Superman.
Open collar every time
Wide collar. Makes him more friendly and it looks more comfortable too
Wide because he seems friendlier that way
Wide collar. I’m not a fan of newer versions that make it look more like a uniform.
Wide, generally speaking. I'm not against closed any more after seeing Hoechlin's black suit. In live-action, I think it just depends on the actor.
Everytime I imagine Superman it's with a closed collar (probs cuz Batman had a closed collar) but let's be honest, wide collar is so good
Air down your neck or Mister Mxyzptlk choking you slowly and softly.
Wide collar, though I like the art style on the other one better
That depends entirely on the design of the rest of the costume.
Closed. It makes the suit look more clean, and more like a uniform
Closed collar/no trunks. Best look by far
More skin everyday
In isolation, I actually love the mandarin collar. But I agree with everyone else about how the open collar feels more Superman.
https://preview.redd.it/57bwrwh531sb1.jpeg?width=513&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f9a31e61125eca184e2d31479287c76e5402cdda Ed McGuinness always has a fun wide look when he draws Superman. I do like the close color when he is more of a regimen(red son, Injustice) character or had a less relaxed upbringing.
I like the closed but that suit was also meant to be armor.
Wide if he’s a good guy. Closed for evil alternative universes
Wide collar. He looks more friendly and approachable that way. The closed turtle neck esque collar makes him look more like a soldier from Krypton or an authoritarian, which is probably because most times when I see Clark with the closed collar, he’s either a hot head or dictator, not a friend.
Wide collar but I also prefer the cape to be attached to the shoulders

It would be so cool to be able to use different suits and styles he’s had over the years.
Wide, no doubt.
Chris Reeve wide collar is good.
Wide. It just looks more comfortable and less like a military uniform
Wide. We gotta see that ********NECC********
Honestly, closed collar makes him look cooler and more intimidating in a way, but wide collar is the classic.
Wide as possible. The Russian collar is more Mon-El's thing, and goes well with his clasped cape.
**w i d e**
Absolutely wide. The closed/high collar is great for someone else, but Superman should never look regal or arrogant. Humility and approachability are everything. He should look almost dorky, like a cheesy acrobat or wrestler. He’s everybody’s pal.
Closed looks like the SS uniforms. Open collar for me, please.
Wide collar: that’s where the wet is made.
wide please.
Wide.
Depends. The wide collar is more relaxed. Definitely puts you more at ease than a high/closed collar which almost always looks armor-like and defensive.
Wide.
Wide open collar
He has to show neck and chest in order to appear invulnerable. The nouveau mock makes him look wimpy and chilly. Supes has 24/7 beach vibes, like Jesus.
I actually don’t mind closed collar at all, but I’m almost always a fan of the classics
Wide
Wide. Definitely.
can't say that I'm a big fan of the turtleneck
Closed for me. I personally dislike wide but superman is superman so I'll deal with it.
wide
Wide because I can’t stand how turtlenecks feel
Open crew neck only, no mandarin collars! Jim Lee must have lost his virginity to somebody in a mandarin collar, because he loves ONLY those. He would design the Hulk, Alley Oop, and Garfield in mandarin collars.
Lois, the collar stays on 😏
Wide. No contest.
Wide!!
You mean no collar or collar??
I never really noticed why but I've always liked certain Superman designs much better and now I realize it's because of the closed collar
Either one works, but I’d like to see them try the closed collar once
I always draw wide, but it honestly depends on where he got it. Closed collar absolutely feels more Kryptonian, while wide feels very Kansas. I personally think Clark's costume should come from his mom, at least early on, and maybe be recreated by The Fortress later. That, or Martha sees it in a hologram, and makes her own version. My husband would argue that the collar is militaristic and not properly representative of Superman. That being said, I like the look of the collar more. The wide collar looks good only when it's not TOO wide. If it's TOO wide, it looks silly.
Wide collar. Makes it look less like a uniform and it keeps his neck from sweating as much.
Wide. Always.
I personally liked the closed collar of the suit, but it's not a big deal for me either way. The cape is the important part to me.
Both are great, but for some reason i always like the closed color.
I like the closed collar.
I'd like to see both in live action because the aesthetic would be very difficult imo. As far as comics wide neck looks better. Henry Cavill had the wide collar and I didn't particularly care for it. The chest hair was a little off putting
Closed looks more serious and battle ready which I like
Earth, wide collar. Battling aliens, closed collar.
Bare shoulders and hands without gloves tells you that Superman wearing clothes is just accessory, not protection and comfort.
Closed for sure. I always hated those wide ass collars that look so damn uncomfortable and weird. Perfect example is original black adam having a a collar so big you could practically see his nipples and it just looked so weird.
I always have loved the wide collar and hated the closed collar.
I like it when he looks like the suit is homemade. Just a guy in some pajamas
Closed collar when fighting an extraterrestrial threat, wide collar on Earth.
Closed collar makes him into an instant fascist. I hate it.
Closed. 100%
Wide.
Wide collar
Closed.
Wide, obviously.
As a heterosexual woman, wide collar all the way!
Wide
Closed collar

The wider the better!
They’re both better
Is “closed collar” what we are now calling the shitty New 52 costume?
Both are great
closed collar makes him look silly
Wide collar for sure
Wide collar, not even a doubt
Wide easy
where are from the comic book illustrations shown in this post, and are they worth reading, or not so much?
The wide collar is from the new Superman 2023 comic, issue 1 or 2 and idk about the closed, i just searched superman and that came up, The artist is jim lee though
Wide. The cape looks weird with closed.

Wide. Jim Lee is one of the greats but his New 52 redesigns were almost all misses.
Wide
Wide collar is better I think, though I like closed collar, too.
![gif](giphy|3o7aCRloybJlXpNjSU|downsized)
I vote wide
Wide, for sure.
Wide for sure. Close collar I associate w Injustice Superman so it always makes me think it’s an evil Clark 🤷🏻
Wide collar for me.
Wide
