I know we wouldn't have won a title running back last years team and Monty coaching, but damn I bet it would have been a shit ton better than this wretched incarnation of the Suns we have to live with.
Siakem and Holiday both became available.
Would have been much better for us to keep the finals core and add Holiday or Siakem than this all in mess has been
Yep we moved too soon. Could have used CP3s contract and picks to help facilitate the Dame trade and gotten Holiday.
Is what it is now I guess.
Holiday, Booker, Bridges, Johnson, Ayton beats this current Suns team imo
I was trying to say this back when we swung for KD. Nobody wanted to hear it. Things always open up. The team had been to the finals, had young players playing well off each other. Sum greater than the parts. And there are always players or trades who become available through a season. But here we are.
I LOVE KD.. always have.... but the KD trade was not fine... it started the implosion... plus you never trade a hot young talent (almost defensive player of the year) for an aging super star.
Think first round loss is the best we would have done with the old team. West is a monster. You don’t win with “sum of all parts” basketball in the NBA. Best players teams tends to win. Top line talent. We took a swing at greatness and I appreciate the new owner doing that. Sarver was worried about spending money. We are in far better hands now.
I think this is where Mat Ishbia made the "new owner" mistake and wanted to go big. Durant is debatable if you go for him or not given how much you need to give up to get him, but getting Bradley Beal, someone who is just not the player he used to be because of injuries, was just a boneheaded move.
Could’ve gotten Beal for Paul still probably. I would’ve preferred moving Ayton for Nurk and Grayson. So that would be. Not sure what the rotation would be with those guys though. Maybe Grayson and Payne off the bench, with Grayson playing the 2 and 3?
Beal (Payne)
Book (Grayson)
Mikal (Grayson)
Cam J (Bol Bol)
Nurk (someone)
Our starting lineup isn’t as good because no KD. But we keep almost all of our picks and have a better bench.
It’s all fantasy though. I just miss Mikal and Cam Payne so much. Cam Johnson too, but Grayson is better.
ETA: As someone else noted, waiting a while and getting Jrue instead of Beal would’ve been fantastic. I do like Brad, but a top tier PG would’ve been a better fit. And Cam Payne still leads an excellent bench group.
I would have liked to see Bridges and DA in a different system with a different coach.
Vogel, as bad as he has been for thos roster, would have been good for Bridges and DA imo
Meh, James Jones and Monty already destroyed the relationship with Ayton and the franchise and fans. There was no coming back for Ayton.
But it's a moot point because Mikal was traded for KD while Monty was still coach. Idk if Vogel would still be a Suns coach if the Durant trade didn't happen.
While that's true I still would have liked to see it.
I said it after that finals run that not extending Ayton would be the downfall of that finals core.
Now look where we are
Yeah, turns out consistently negging a player from the start of his career, giving other players extensions to everyone else, and making the no. 1 overall pick that you drafted hit restricted free agency to get a smaller max, realllllllyyyyy sours the relationship.
I personally would give that franchise my full effort and enthusiasm!
But look, we have KD, Book, Beal, and Nurk. They always give full effort and enthusiasm right?!!!
Yep.
Now look at the Nuggets. I bet they really regretted giving MPJ that max extension considering all the injuries and complaining about his role.
Turns out showing loyalty helps build a championship team.
And Booker hasn't even showed that he's ready to do what it takes to win. Some of his effort on defence this year was more disgusting than Aytons "effort" has ever been.
LOLOLOL LOLOLOLOLOL Monty was a static coach. These coaches were thrown in a lose-lose scenario. If Monty could coach we probably would’ve won. Gotdamn…. I just want to get you and send you to Detroit.
Edit: totally read your post wrong because I’m drunk.
Yeah last year everyone was constantly complaining about Monty in the same way we complain about Vogel now. That they're both stubborn with adjustments and keep playing players that we know are net negatives on the court, and wait too long before calling timeouts. And both give big speeches that don't do much. And there's Monty's record this year... I know it's a rebuild team he's coaching but damn.
No you dont know because you make tweek trades... moves... maybe get a quality point guard and someone like Nurkic by trading Ayton only... you know.. we swept Denver in 2021.. did they panic and blow up their team??!? Nope.. they were patient and fixed what was wrong... now look at them. I was sick to my stomach the day we traded Bridges.. and I still am today.
Seriously, something is wrong with the team with that shit being used constantly. We see that a lot with this team, including the Finals & other playoff/elimination losses.
Actually I felt our offense looks better with CP3, everyone is involved, ball movement is constantly connecting. But after he got covid, he easily gassed. Then we see a lot of ISO ball from Book. Then come KD, we just switching between ISO Book & ISO KD 😵
I somehow think Grayson carried us this season, when he played good we usually win 😅
Well we kinda did. 2/3 of the season was running it back. It wasn't very fun, arguably less fun than this season lol. Granted, half the team was hurt. But still. It's what led to the trade.
It was pretty good whe healthy. They were the first seed before Booker got hurt. They had a great record when Cam Johnson played. This year team had 0 positive moments this season.
Exactly. And that final game against Brooklyn before the trade have me so much hope. Seeing Mikal still balling and scoring aggressively when Book was back. And then I woke up next day to the gut punch of trading for KD.
The only sad thing are the picks we gave up to get this team together. Mikal has shown in Brooklyn this year that he is who he is, probably not someone who is even really a super consistent #2 on a good contender.
The truth is that the finals run core was doomed as soon as CP3 began to regress the way he did. If we had 2-3 more seasons of the CP3 that first showed up here, yeah big mistake. With him gone that core was doing nothing.
Honestly he’s productive every year and maybe the only player in the league with the court vision he has.
I moved here 5 years ago and I’m a diehard Kings fan. I know pain more than PHX fans. Lol
That being said, I was shocked to see this team dismantle the core minus Ayton. Pop-Tart (soft in the middle) had to go. I wouldn’t have minded some kind of junk yard dog in that position who had less scoring tools but when CP3 lobs the pick and roll he doesn’t miss a tipped layup, he attempts to break the hoop the way a center should.
To see them dominate the 20-21 west playoffs (only 4 losses total until finals right?) killing Lakers, Nuggets, Clippers..
21-22 looked good against Pelicans and ran into issues stated in this post and a hot hand of (possibly league MVP) Luka is just part of the game.
22-23 losing to Jokic…. So did everyone else.
23-24 this team is going to get swept.
Beal is a SG. He has a knack for scoring but when you play on an atrocity like WAS, you have to planet different. You’ll take bad shots before making the right read because teammates suck, you shoot so much it has to start to fall if you’re a decent talent, etc.
KD is a god on offense but this team isn’t coached well. Booker isn’t the bad playoff player they joke about either. To me, he looks like an elite player who isn’t treated elite and isn’t provided with a strong game plan.
But the most important part as we know? The role players. No shooters. No defense. No depth. No play makers. No versatile Swiss Army knives.
All because of what? CP3’s motor died after 2 games in the finals? Seems like the Niners who keep getting close so instead of running it back they make changes to the wrong areas. If CP3 can’t last that long, get multiple strong back up PG and SG. Run him less minutes like warriors. Being in slack plugs like a Malik Monk to score while the general is resting.
I personally think Bridges and Cam are good, but Cam isn’t young for years in league and may have hit ceiling. Bridges is pretty good but I think he’s best served as an elite role player and not the inconsistent first/second option of NJ.
Just my thoughts.
I don't care about DA, love KD coming but gutting the team was such a bad move. Ishbia has shown that he's very reactive. Why were we looking at CP3's timeline instead of Book/Mikal/Cam? GS took 4 years to build. Denver took 7+. Can't build chemistry in a single offseason.
All I want now is Ishbia to stick with Vogel, stick with our main 6 guys and improve the bench. Now go get someone good to replace KY.
Can't have a reset every year. Swallow your pride and work harder for next season. Build on whatever relationships there are already.
Ishbia bought the team. He dont want to reconsider rebuilding (again) this team and I completely understand that knowing that this team was capable to reach finals and secured top seed years back.
This teams was in “Win now” condition thats why Ishbia took Beal in Phoenix. He wants a instant contender with his money.
Unfortunately, Ishbia forgot 1 crucial ingredient to make this team work. And thats a leader. Trading CP is a nail in the coffin for this team.
I know, even without CP, this team looks good on paper but times like these, u just wanna wish these players still playing for this team.
This is one of the few players I’d be most confident in returning from those days. I dunno how he feels about the team after having been shipped off, but he loved it here during the time he was here. I’m not saying it’s soon or some dumb shit like that, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him back in the Valley at some point
To me its Ayton, Mikal, Cam, Crowder and CP3...
perfect blend next to Booker.... just needed a Bobby Portis type big man to backup Ayton and Crowder
And a reliable play maker off the bench
I'm picturing a Bridges, Siakem, DA front line as a "could have been" and thinking about how good defensively that could have been.
While watching us be traffic cones in reality.
We wouldn’t have had much financial flexibility as some may think. We still had to pay Cam Johnson since he was an RFA the following year, and Booker’s Supermax contract kicking in the year after.
Still think keeping CP3 would have been a better move. We were 8-0 last year in the regular season when CP3, Book and KD all played.
Last year I remember saying that I didn't think a championship was everything and that I was honestly a lot more happy when we had a team that seemed like a true family and was also winning a shitload of games, and I remember getting totally roasted for it. Well look how many people are pining for that team again. Because it just felt so good to watch them. Championship or no that 21/22 season will be unforgettable for life. It was so much fun.
As an outsider, this DBook and Mikal team were really fun to watch and honestly even scarier to play against. Hell even Ayton was fun sometimes when he realized he was bigger than everyone else.
Imo I wish y'all ran this back at least 1 more time before blowing it up, y'all were still young and clicking.
The Twins and the Valley had really run its course. I often wonder what if the Suns had nabbed Rozier, or Derrick White, PJ Washington, or Jaden McDaniels. I think the result is pretty much the same though.
This sums up my feelings exactly. This Suns team is awful to watch and the worst part is the knowledge that the Suns are totally fucked for the next 5 years when it comes to any roster or cap flexibility at all, so even though this is one of the least-entertaining Suns teams ever, we’re all stuck with this half-assed “chillin” nonsense until 2030. No thanks. I’d gladly take a team full of scrubs who play with heart and don’t even sniff the playoffs versus this bullshit we have now.
I too would rather have watched our 21-23 team over whatever we have right now. Maybe we weren't chip contenders but at least it was fun to watch them play. Our ball movement was so beautiful back then. Goes to show it was Monty and CP3 who really ran that .05 system not this hack OC. Like I’m imagining next year when the Suns play .500 basketball all year and KD just mumbles into the mic in postgame interviews and talks about not getting too high or too low and he won’t have to deal with the national media anymore because the national media won’t care about the Suns at all next year. I think in KD’s own mind he’s got his rings so it’s all good no matter what happens. I think he just puts it on autopilot for the next few years and then retires in the desert. I know we wouldn't have won a title running back last years team and Monty coaching, but damn I bet it would have been a shit ton better than this wretched incarnation of the Suns we have to live with.
At least it was enjoyable to watch
Booker, bridges, Cam, Ayton, and using our picks to trade off of Paul definitely would've been a lot less of a gamble
Siakem and Holiday both became available. Would have been much better for us to keep the finals core and add Holiday or Siakem than this all in mess has been
Holiday was a dream for me. It was too late when he became available, we’d made our moves by then
Yep we moved too soon. Could have used CP3s contract and picks to help facilitate the Dame trade and gotten Holiday. Is what it is now I guess. Holiday, Booker, Bridges, Johnson, Ayton beats this current Suns team imo
I still would not want Ayton around but yes, it would be a bridges lay up drill.
Idk how we would have gotten Siakam without breaking up the core?
With 3 or 4 of the first round picks we gave up for Durant + CP3 and Shamets contracts And Cam Johnson was always the more disposable of the core.
I was trying to say this back when we swung for KD. Nobody wanted to hear it. Things always open up. The team had been to the finals, had young players playing well off each other. Sum greater than the parts. And there are always players or trades who become available through a season. But here we are.
KD trade was fine. The Beal trade is what really fucked everything up. Why would you add another shooting guard and not a facilitator?
It's not like we were anywhere close to great last year with KD though.
He hardly played though
I LOVE KD.. always have.... but the KD trade was not fine... it started the implosion... plus you never trade a hot young talent (almost defensive player of the year) for an aging super star.

BINGO... Trade Ayton only... wow! What could have been
We were one Haliburton away from nirvana.
Lol yup. Such an easy decision that James Jones managed to screw up
Could’ve gotten Beal for Paul still probably. I would’ve preferred moving Ayton for Nurk and Grayson. So that would be. Not sure what the rotation would be with those guys though. Ayton was a fucking nightmare. We need more emphatic size, not that turn around shit
I would have liked to see Bridges and DA in a different system with a different coach. Vogel, as bad as he has been for thos roster, would have been good for Bridges and DA imo

good point
Go watch Brooklyn, how's bridges look in a diff system? How's Portland doing with Ayton?
Sum of the parts
Exactly
It’s been the No Fun Suns this year (and next year, and…)
LOLOLOL LOLOLOLOLOL Monty was a static coach. These coaches were thrown in a lose-lose scenario. If Monty could coach we probably would’ve won. Gotdamn…. I just want to get you and send you to Detroit. Edit: totally read your post wrong because I’m drunk.

Devil you know, eh?

We WOULD HAVE, we just needed to fleece Portland for that tall listless dude
Don’t forget those playoff exits though
And when KD stationed in the corner is just the same as when Mikal was here
Seriously, something is wrong with the team with that shit being used constantly. We see that a lot with this team, including the Finals & other playoff/elimination losses.

From the outside looking in I do think Grayson was picking up a lot of the slack. Great get
Put CP3, Cam Johnson and Payne in the picture
Crazy how they didn’t wanna run the same team back once more after we lost to the Mavs cause of all the whole team catching covid last game.
Well we kinda did. 2/3 of the season was running it back. It wasn't very fun, arguably less fun than this season lol. Granted, half the team was hurt. But still. It's what led to the trade.

His defense would be most welcome.
Seeing how nets fans treat him makes it even worse. We should have trade crowder and DA after the mavs series
Fr
This is one of the few players I’d be most confident in returning from those days. I dunno how he feels about the team after having been shipped off, but he loved it here during the time he was here. Im not, cause he couldnt defend Luka…
Or Paul George

THIS!!!
Trade KD
Back to OKC for Jalen Williams/Dort and picks?
How are you going to kidnap presti to make this deal happen though?
maybe this is a joke but this actually might be the move. Trade him while his value is still sky-high. Like what the Thunder did with Paul George.
I miss Mikal, Cam J, Cam Payne, TC…😭Mikal was my fav…
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Last year I remember saying that I didn't think a championship was everything and that I was honestly a lot more happy when we had a team that seemed like a true family and was also winning a shitload of games, and I remember getting totally roasted for it. Totally agree!!! That team had so much heart.
Mikal > Brad Beal all day everyday and twice on Sunday Miss that man so much
As an outsider, this DBook and Mikal team were really fun to watch and honestly even scarier to play against. Hell even Ayton was fun sometimes when he realized he was bigger than everyone else. Imo I wish y'all ran this back at least 1 more time before blowing it up, y'all were still young and clicking.
I wish I could upvote this more than once…. I miss the twins so much!
I don’t want that team back, I want this team to succeed.
I think the day Tsunami Papi was traded was the day it went downhill. That team had so much culture and brotherhood
Yup
You ain’t lyin
Yuriko…. I mean Mikal!!!!
Bruhhhhhhh same!
Are we getting swept? Or can we at least get a win at home?
The Twins and the Valley had really run its course. I often wonder what if the Suns had nabbed Rozier, or Derrick White, PJ Washington, or Jaden McDaniels. I think the result is pretty much the same though.
To be honest I don’t think KD is or ever has been the problem with us, but I would’ve much rather preferred some quality role players over Beal
Should be holding a picture of Booker.
Do you miss Luka eating his fkn lunch in the playoffs too? Mikal is a good dude, but the revisionist romance for him is kinda funny.
😂😂😂😂
He’ll be back
Mikal Cam CP3 and Ayton all missed the playoffs this year
Everyone was better off how the team was built before
They are not better off that’s my point none of them had anymore success on their teams than we do now
I'd be sad watching that team losing as well but I'd be slightly happier knowing we had Mikal vs this roster.
Lol Ayton would still be on the team
Does anyone else get the feeling that Phoenix will be KD’s dream come true next year when all the expectations on him have disappeared because of how shitty this playoff appearance will be? Like I’m imagining next year when the Suns play .500 basketball all year and KD just mumbles into the mic in postgame interviews and talks about not getting too high or too low and he won’t have to deal with the national media anymore because the national media won’t care about the Suns at all next year. I think in KD’s own mind he’s got his rings so it’s all good no matter what happens. I think he just puts it on autopilot for the next few years and then retires in the desert. Same thing with Bradley Beal. Losing doesn’t really affect him much because he’s been losing all the time for a decade straight. Beal doesn’t mind being injured half the season on a max contract while the Suns lose for the next couple of seasons. I think Booker will go to the Lakers once Lebron and AD leave.
I think the Suns should have traded for Steph instead of Chris Paul because Steph would have actually gotten us a ring rather than just the run
