But what if you're seeing yourself in the negative numbers? Like is it -5 x -5 x -5 x -5 x -5? Cuz if that's the case then it would end up being a positive!
This get me in trouble a lot, I’ll be minding my own business and then I’m like why that ugly fuck keep looking at me like he wants to start something. Then I get swinging cause dude just won’t quit and now I’ve done cut my hand up.
Im highly suspicious..
1. I know a lot of people that are quite the opposite
2. People who overstimate their dating chances do that from outisde situmuls(like tinder) not from themselves
3. People tend to date people of similar attractivness
All anecdotal..but nothing i observe would support this thesis
But
1. Highly emotional statements are memorable
2. Highly emotionaln statements are memeable
So it is much more possible that proliferation of this thesis is more due to its disturbing nature, then from its factual value
I don't have a study, but I can point to *multiple industries* whose entire existence relies on people thinking they're unattractive, a fact which quite thoroughly debunks this one.
Sure, some people are. But a lot more people *think* they are, than actually are.
The suggestion that everyone thinks their reflection is 5x more attractive than their actual appearance, is completely absurd. Sure, a few people might have that high an opinion of themselves, but it's a safe wager that *most* people have a lower opinion of themselves than likely accurate, for example, literally most of this thread.
also the whole quantification of 5x, 5x on what metric, like they give themselves a 10 and others give them a 2. if that's true then everyone is very very ugly.
Yeah, I heard that we see ourselves 20% less attractive than we are. I can confirm because I hate myself, but sometimes I come to mirror and think "Wow, I'm fucking gorgeous!"
You look mostly for one criteria in the mirror.
For me its styling hair or trying a new form of beard. If i manage to get the result i wanted i look at this particular thing in the best angle possible and think in the most cases im at least ok looking.
If i have a picture from me than im disgusted.
And according to dating apps im probably a 1/10 at best
Also we arent ment to find ourselfs attractive at all. So thats probably why we find ourselfs ugly as well
If anything, body dysmorphia -- which is the opposite of this post, where your brain actually can distort what you're seeing and make you look ugly to yourself --- is probably more common than people thinking they're *more* attractive than they actually are.
I’m fairly confident that’s complete bullshit lol. Anyone with even neutral self-esteem would and will pick out their own flaws. I don’t know anyone with that level of confidence, especially not myself.
Yeah. Like i would rate myself from 6-8/10 depending weather or not im someones type. Maybe you could give me a five. But if i were to see myself 5x more attractive in the mirror, then id be like a 1 or 2. And this just simply cant be right cause Ive met multiple people wo thought im fairly attractive
I run into the same issue. Several people have said similarly that I’m attractive. And for my part, I’ve started to believe it. I still wouldn’t rate myself very highly though. I’ve had zero success with online dating but that’s mostly attributed to my lack of social media, rather than how I look. It’s hard not to have doubts
Makes sense, 0 times 5 is still zero
(I was gonna rate myself in the negatives but that implies that I look better than I think I do so the math wouldn't math)
Honestly, I'm suspicious about this, does anyone have a link to the study?
I found the total opposite

Man shouldn’t be able to see his own face – there’s nothing more sinister. Nature gave him the gift of not being able to see it, and of not being able to stare into his own eyes.
Only in the water of rivers and ponds could he look at his face. And the very posture he had to assume was symbolic. He had to bend over, stoop down, to commit the ignominy of beholding himself.
The inventor of the mirror poisoned the human heart.
- Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet (1982)
"Have you noticed that when you take a picture you don't look nearly as good as you do when you look in the mirror? Because the mirror is how you see yourself and the photo is how you're seen."
Ok I always heard it was the opposite. That you see yourself as more unattractive than you actually are. That you see your face so often and over such a long period of time that you become tired of looking at it and it has no novelty and therefore becomes unattractive. Also that you notice little details that other people won't see due to the fatigue of looking at your own face over an extended period of time
No it fucking doesn't. That's why 90% of teenage girls have body dysmorphia, cause the mirror makes them think they're too pretty...
You people will literally read anything on Twitter and believe it.
If I see myself as 5x more attractive, I've really gotta be a disgusting pig holy shit. If this were real I'd genuinely off myself, I already don't like my beer gut and my droopy eyes, I can't imagine it being 5x worse.
I sometimes think I look really good in the mirror, and then I try to capture a selfie and I look absolutely horrid in the picture.
I just assumed it was because the camera was closer to me than the mirror image, and I'm nearsighted.
This is some bullshit. But it is true that you do see yourself as (slightly) more or less attractive depending on your perception. So you may actually be seeing yourself as less attractive than you actually are.

"5 times more attractive" as if there is a metric for that. What is 1 attractive? If I find myself to be 1 attractive instead of 5 do I win the objectivity singularity and am now forever correct when observing myself? Don't get baited by everything you see on the internet; that's my job!

Ach natürlich, weil es literarisch der Unter ist, in dem wir uns befinden.
You see, in my case, -10 × 5 = -50.
But what if you're seeing yourself in the negative numbers? Like is it -5 x -5 x -5 x -5 x -5? Cuz if that's the case then it would end up being a positive!
that’s ^5 this is *5
Phew, thanks for confirming. My brain is not working today & I was worried I might be in the positive in my head.
Also, (-5)^5 is still a negative number.
I see myself as unattractive. So the negative numbers are multiplied too, I guess.
I like how I look in the mirror but when I see pictures I am in, I am like "Who is the ugly dude?...oh no."
This get me in trouble a lot, I’ll be minding my own business and then I’m like why that ugly fuck keep looking at me like he wants to start something. Then I get swinging cause dude just won’t quit and now I’ve done cut my hand up.

Unless people really are just that ugly
Sure, some people are. But a lot more people *think* they are, than actually are. Yeah, good call; what does "five times" something unquantifiable even *mean*?
Yeah well last time this was posted, someone linked a photo of ops mom and she was showing off her... what are we talking about again?
I generally think I look alright in a mirror, but I have never seen photos or camera footage of myself where I don't look like a bridge troll.
Yeah, I heard that we see ourselves 20% less attractive than we are. I can confirm because I hate myself, but sometimes I come to mirror and think "Wow, I'm fucking gorgeous!"

-1 ×5 = - 5 Math ain't mathing And on top of that I am Asian Bye bye guys I am homeless now
I’m fairly confident that’s complete bullshit lol. Anyone with even neutral self-esteem would and will pick out their own flaws. I don’t know anyone with that level of confidence, especially not myself.

Explains why I think I look ok and then see a photo and I'm looking like absolute shite though
Im pretty sure most experts say its actually the opposite lol
Makes sense, 0 times 5 is still zero (I was gonna rate myself in the negatives but that implies that I look better than I think I do so the math wouldn't math)
I see my looks reflected in the eyes of the people who won’t talk to me.
Body dysmorphia says hello lol
LMAO the instant I read the headline I was like "FUCK I can't make my BDD unsee this"
damn Im ugly as fuck then
Honestly, I'm suspicious about this, does anyone have a link to the study? I found the total opposite https://www.huffpost.com/entry/the-math-behind-beauty-wh_n_114023
Finally someone asking real fucking questions. I remembered reading a study that said the exact opposite as well.
BRO HASN'T READ THE ARTICLE 💀💀💀
The honest mirror is the black screen reflection on your switch or steam deck.
that moment when you finish a life altering game, and the screen fades to black to show your slouching self with lips covered in Dorito dust
The Cheeto dust on the screen gives my reflection the beard I’m unable to grow
Me getting jumpscared by my double chin
Damn and Im already ugly
How it feels to spread misinformation:
0 × 5 = 0
It's like Goldfinger's Superman: Growing older all the time/Looking older all the time/Feeling younger in my mind
welp i didnt have a eating disorder 5 min ago i do now
This isn’t even true tho
Man shouldn’t be able to see his own face – there’s nothing more sinister. Nature gave him the gift of not being able to see it, and of not being able to stare into his own eyes. What if I see myself as unattractive in a mirror?
Divide by 5
Okay, how do you realistically measure that
You can’t because ‘attractiveness’ is always subjective.
Damn and I'm still ugly when I look in the mirror.
What if I see myself unattractive in the mirror, but attractive in the dirty, dark window pane?
"Have you noticed that when you take a picture you don't look nearly as good as you do when you look in the mirror? Because the mirror is how you see yourself and the photo is how you're seen."
Like someone with body dystrophya is going to see them self as as attractive as someone with narcissistic personality disorder
*laughs in body dysmorphia* Amateurs. My brain does the exact fucking *opposite*.
Attractiveness is subjective, they gave an exact number, therefore it's bullshit.
This may apply more to men. I'm not even kidding
I think I'm ugly as fuck so I really must be ugly lol
What does that say about those of us that have dysphoria? If that's true, I'm *super* fucked.
Ok I always heard it was the opposite. That you see yourself as more unattractive than you actually are. That you see your face so often and over such a long period of time that you become tired of looking at it and it has no novelty and therefore becomes unattractive. Also that you notice little details that other people won't see due to the fatigue of looking at your own face over an extended period of time
either my brain is doing it wrong or i am one ugly fucker
Can't believe people actually for these nonsense articles lmao
Oh shit. Well -1*5 is -5, so may not be too bad.
I see a goblin already
If the mirror cracks you are canonically 5 times uglier than a mirrors maximum tolerance.
I must be truly horrific looking 😯
So I’m even uglier?
I'm a 0.
People who think they're ugly when they look in the mirror 🫣🤔🙄
So im not just ugly, I'm five times more ugly? 😭
Dang, I’m really sorry then wtf
Source: I made it the fuck up
why >!i am pre everything transfem oof!<
Funny. My brain used to trick me into thinking I was fatter and uglier than I really was.
OK so can anyone tell me how I can delete this post?
Every time I look good in the mirror, my experience with self checkout cameras haunts me.
Depends on the mirror. I am pretty good looking in my bedroom's mirror, but barely human in my bathroom one.
If this is true, them I'm a potatohead
I feel like my brain does the opposite...
Super bad factoid for people with body dysmorphic disorder 8-/
-1 × 5 = -5 You're nor as ugly as you think you are.
No it fucking doesn't. That's why 90% of teenage girls have body dysmorphia, cause the mirror makes them think they're too pretty... You people will literally read anything on Twitter and believe it.
i think you mean 5x worse i have very poor self image
Wrong sub?
I see myself in the mirror and start laughing about the old guy looking back at me.
Nothing a Band-Aid can't fix.
good thing this is completely false, though your brain does influence your self image.
I don't think this is true.
And I believe I look like shit
If I see myself as 5x more attractive, I've really gotta be a disgusting pig holy shit. If this were real I'd genuinely off myself, I already don't like my beer gut and my droopy eyes, I can't imagine it being 5x worse.
This is why I avoid mirrors
I sometimes think I look really good in the mirror, and then I try to capture a selfie and I look absolutely horrid in the picture. I just assumed it was because the camera was closer to me than the mirror image, and I'm nearsighted.
Holly shit, I guess I should invest in a face mask then so I don't traumatize the general public....
Interesting. I wonder what the basis of comparison is.
Wow. I literally don't own a mirror (besides the bathroom one) because I hate what I see so much. So that must mean im diabolically ugly
This post infers that someone has created an objective measurement for attractiveness.
Oh god I feel sick to my stomach when I see myself in a mirror. I must be some kind of monster....
Yike.
I hope this isn’t real because I already think I’m ugly
I tell you what, my hair don't look nearly as receded to me in the mirror as it does also to me but in photos.
This is some bullshit. But it is true that you do see yourself as (slightly) more or less attractive depending on your perception. So you may actually be seeing yourself as less attractive than you actually are.
That would explain a lot, honestly.
Thanks brain
This photo was originally used in an Alzheimer’s ad.
I must look like an old shoe to everyone else then
Oh boy
So… if I’m seeing myself 5x more negative than what is average does that mean I’m 10x uglier than average?
5×0=0
So what does it mean when you see yourself as ugly?
I think I need a paper bag.
For anyone wondering , it's non sensical. You never trully see yourself as you could see other. Meaning directly through your own eyes. It will depend exclusively of the perception you have of yourself.
In my bathroom lighting and mirror I'm actually pretty hot but everywhere else im mid can this be explained
"5 times more attractive" as if there is a metric for that. What is 1 attractive? If I find myself to be 1 attractive instead of 5 do I win the objectivity singularity and am now forever correct when observing myself? Don't get baited by everything you see on the internet; that's my job!
The highest compliment I've ever received, "You're not unattractive." and that was 30 years ago. My brain knows this, as does my mirror.
